Nokia 6310i Review

Phone rating:

Note: the 6310i is now obsolete. Instead we recommend the Nokia 6300 or Nokia 6300 Black from Dial-a-Phone. Check out their Nokia 6300 deals.

The Nokia 6310i adds Triband capability to the Nokia 6310, enabling it to operate worldwide. This feature, combined with the new Java applications, famous user-friendliness and features like High Speed Data, voice dialling and voice recorder make the Nokia 6310i an excellent business phone.

The Java capability means that you can download applications just as easily as downloading ringtones or graphics. As well as Java games, you can also download applications like personal assistants, travel and information tools.

We would like to have awarded the 6310i a higher rating, but there are persistent reports of reliability and reception problems with this phone. The Bluetooth support is also limited, its a heavy phone to carry and some of its features are rather dated.

For those looking for a 6310i replacement, we recommend the Nokia 6021 which has all the features of the 6310i (and more) in an updated design.

Features of the Nokia 6310i include:

  • WAP (over GPRS) plus HSCSD (High Speed Data)
  • email
  • Downloadable Java™ applications
  • Bluetooth™ wireless technology
  • Hi-resolution 6 line display
  • Predictive text messaging
  • 35 ringtones plus 5 downloadable ringtones
  • Phonebook with 500 names
  • Picture messages
  • Voice activated dialling
  • Voice recorder
  • Data capability (built-in infra-red modem)
  • Calendar, 4 games
  • Size: 129 x 47 x 21 mm
  • Weight: 111g
  • Battery standby: 480 hours
  • Battery talktime: 3 - 6 hours
  • Vibration alert
  • Tri-band

Ikeep looking to buy a new phone as my 6310i is getting very knocked about but every time I fail to find a phone that does the essentials ( battery life, call quality, bluetooth, durability ) as well and has a comfortable size and shape with the right amount of weight. It really amazes me that with no real problems on my budget I am going back to buy refurbished 6310i's . It really is that good. I have looked at the latest Nokias but they feel lightweight and too small. Camera's etc are just gimmicks

This phone is bullet proof, I've had mine for about 3 years now it has travelled all over the world with me on business, never failing to find a local network before I've got off the plane. It syncs perfectly with my laptop. I've dropped it countless times, I've sat on it and even rescued it from the dishwasher! the facia is getting a little worn but everything works just fine. If you need a comms device to make and receive calls and the odd text this is truely the best business phone. It is a real shame that Nokia discontinued it. I have a camera, I have an iPod, I have a radio, why don't Nokia just produce a another rock solid phone for business use like the 6310i?

"They don't make them like they used to" - and that is certainly the case when you review any of the 6210/6310/6310i family. What a truly excellent and perfect family of phones. Their design is flawless and functions are rich and ideal for business and personal users. I'm currently using a 6310 and a 6310i and I'm amazed at the battery life these phones offer even with continuous use throughout the day. I think the only complaint I have is how the fascia's become worn and shabby, you have to be fragile with them to keep them looking good. It's a shame Nokia don't make these anymore and it's a shame everything on the market looks like it's been built to target 8 year olds. If you want a good, reliable, solid phone, get one of these, they are a bargain second hand and there are so many to choose from.

The best phone I've ever had. Brilliant battery life, easy to use menus, and robust construction. Sound quality is always fantastically clear. Like so many other people I'd like something now with a few toys on, colour screen and poly. ring tones, but not at the expense of a shoddily built phone with poor UI. So for now I'll stick with this. Just don't forget about us Nokia!

I love this phone because it is easy to use, has great reception, brilliant battery life, reliable, sturdy and problem free. It is definitely the best and most reliable phone I have ever had, no problems what-so-ever. I am not a whizz kid and prefer something that is simple and easy to use. This phone has good size buttons and the menu system is a doddle to use. I am now replacing the phone with the Nokia 6230. I hope that the new phone is as good as the 6310i. Well done Nokia!!! :-)

Am I using the wrong version of Nokia PC Suite? The phone is battered (wife through it across a road and under a bus) but still works beautifully although it does rattle a little bit now.

The only mobile phone that I would recommend anyone buy. No colour screen, no camera, no MMS; but who uses those anyway! This phone had the best interface of any I've used. (hit the left softkey 3 times to start writing a text message). Menus load instantly, everything is fast and responsive. The Li-Polymer battery lasts for ever. I went on a weeks holiday and it barly dented the battery (as opposed to my mate's 7650 which ran out on the coach /to/ the resort). Quite probably the best phone ever made. I had to give mine back when I changed jobs, and I miss it everytime I try to make a call on the symbian joke I have to use now.

I agree with most of the comments. This is the best communication device for business users. I travel to the most remote places in the planet and the long battery life coupled with the good reception means that I am almost always able to phone home. Afghanistan was the only country where I couldn't call at all but that was because of local service limitations. It appears that the new Nokia 6021 will be close to being a suitable replacement.

If Nokia do not come up with a model to fit the car kit then I'm looking elsewhere. Like most people writing here, I have had 18 months of this excellent phone. Mine has been used and abused on many continents and has survived countless drops (and beer floods), like its predecessor the 6210 it is virtually indestructable and does exactly what I want it to do. (thanks I have a camera already etc...). As I invested in a new car kit only 12 Months ago I am mightily annoyed with Nokia for discontinuing the phone, I work in the comms industry and almost everyone I know has the 6310i and car kit. Nokia appear completely unconcerned about the loyal Nokia users out there and show no intention of bringing out a replacement that will fit the car kit. What a way to treat a cutomer base !!, when my 6310 becomes just too tatty, then it's goodbye Nokia after many years of loyalty.

I upgraded from a 6210 to the 6310i nearly two years ago. I can't get on with the clutter on current fashion phones. I just want to talk and occasionally text. The phone works fine abroad. My bluetooth headset works fine. The phone battery last for about 10 days. I've just managed to get a decent second hand one to replace my wife's 6210. This came with a brand new case which was easily replaced. This is the phone's one weak point. The finish on the case isn't as robust as the 6210 and marks easily. I've kept mine in a leather case to keep it looking good. It says it all when my favourite phone dealer wouldn't recommend an upgrade for this phone, so I'll stick with it for a while.

I agree with everyone else, as a business phone it is outstanding. I've been using mine for about 2 years now and have a spare one which I took as an upgrade, rather than the gimmicky rubbish that the kids like. I notice that the majority of business people I meet use a 6310i, which really says it all. If you want a digital camera then buy a proper one with around 5 megapixels and an Ipod to listen to your mp3s! I cannot imagine listening to music or the radio on a phone!!!

Could not agree more with most of the reviews, only wonder why with so many people still enjoying the 6310i they ever stopped production. And even more why so little information can be found on how to repair when finally after a zillion drops you need to open the back. In my case the vibrator only works when you shake the phone, something is loose in there! As so many people my next phone will probably be a 6310i again, even if it means second hand for outrageous prices (175 Euro easy!)

It would seem I am not alone with my problem. The 6310i is getting obsolete, but I can't find a phone good enough to replace it with. I would like a phone with all the new toys like cameras and mp3-players, but first and foremost I want a good phone. The 6310 has the perfect keyboard, it seems to be made for my fingers. The battery is still going strong and the phone itself can fall all the way to hell and bounce back working as well as it always has. Those of you who are having trouble with the phone switching off randomly, try the 'Nokia paper trick': take a small piece of paper, fold it couple of times over and place it between the phones body and the battery. This is something you should do to every Nokia phone. Over time the battery will get loose and thus it won't be able to provide a steady voltage for the phone. This will cause all kinds of weird behaviour like the phone switching itself off randomly, the battery life going down dramatically and even the phone booting itself at 3:33AM every night!

Now discontinued. I have just bought a second handset via eBay. If you want a phone that is functional, this is it. If you want coloured screens, photo capability, fancy ringtones etc. look elsewhere. I want something that just works as a phone, reliably and easily. Both mine do - all the time. I have not experienced signal problems, either in the UK or in Europe. The infra red connection works well; the Bluetooth is another matter but that's well known. A true workhorse with an excellent battery life.

This is truly one of Nokia's best phones yet. After a false start with Bluetooth only being supported by their (now defunct) PCMCIA Bluetooth adapter, Nokia fixed the problem, and if you've got software version 5.50 or higher, it should work with most BT adapters out there. I've had PC Suite 4.88 work for over a year with two different, cheap, BT adapters (Belkin and Linksys). The phone is exactly the right form factor, and feels great in the hand. It has Nokia's stellar user interface, before they slowed everything down with unecessary colour and non-phone related functions that you will never use. Even after two years, I still get 9-14 days out of a battery charge. My reception is consistently as good or better than any phones I compare it with. The only downside is the way that it handles a BT headset. It keeps the connection active all the time, which means that you've got to disconnect the headset if you want to use your BT PDA to dial the phone, or to connect to the GPRS modem. So even after I've had this phone for 2 years, I have not found a compelling reason to upgrade. I really like my gadgets, and even so, I have kept this phone longer than almost any other before it. If you're in the market for a great no-frills phone, I would definitely recommend the Nokia 6310i!

Outstanding business phone. Good strong reception, easy to use software, battery lasts about 2 WEEKS each time it is charged. Good weight, nice to hold and use for extended periods. Terrible if you are a young poser into playing monopoly with yourself on your phone or want to take tiny grainy pictures, or have the latest teeny song for a ringtone - because it doesn't do these things. However, if you use a phone a lot, and if you want a reliable, high quality and easy to use phone - then this is it. I used one for 2 years until I got a motorola V525 as an upgrade. Big mistake. I will never get a Motorola again - and God how I miss the Nokia... Be warned... there's no hope for me, but don't let your life be ruined like mine... you still have time...

Problem is 6310i only work with a specific Digianswer Bluetooth card that is not manufactured any more (found that out after The PC suite software gave a weird error message when I try to connect Bluetooth, and I visited a lot of online forums were lot of people have same problem but no solution). :-( Very bad The Ugly : Well to some any way. I've had this phone since it was launched and without a doubt it is the best phone on the market for everyday business use. I was considering an upgrade because mine has been so heavily used one or two of the keys are now looking tatty, but there is nothing that seems to come near it for functionality. I've dropped mine I don't know how many times but every time it just keeps on working. It's built like a brick, and some people think it looks like one! That's a bit unfair because although it might be larger and heavier than some modern models, it is quite ergonomic and all the keys very easy to use, especially for someone with like me with fingers like thumbs! There's no gimmicks, like a camera or radio, but there is just about every type of connectivity you'll need, and they all work perfectly. I live and work around remote parts of Norfolk where reception is notoriously poor in some spots, yet reception on this phone has been excellent. Infrared, bluetooth, GPRS, they are all work without fail. I use mine with a Nokia car kit a lot of the time and have no external antenna. The reception is excellent, even at high speed. This also acts as a charger and I have never had to charge it from the mains, and the battery is as good now as it was when I bought it. As this phone is now almost obsolete (why oh why did Nokia stop manufacturing?) I don't know what I'll do when mine finally gives up. This phone is probably as near to my perfect choice as I'm ever likely to get.

A very good reception quality. A real loud ringing volume, and good vibration. A very good design making handling keys and texting a sleek and handy. (Despite being a little bit big) A convenient organizer. And above this the great BLUETOOTH which does deserve a special appreciation from those on the go. I have used it for almost 2 years, and I have to say "I'm more than satisfied with it" as long as I'm thinking of it as a MOBILE phone not a toy that plays non-audible music & non-clear video and takes non-sense photos with a clumsy look to end up always attached to a wired power source.

Its well made, and the standby of nearly 2 weeks is amazing. This really is a no nonsense proper telephone, at the end of the day a phone is for making calls and a camera is for taking pictures, I think a lot of manufacturers have forgotton that a phone is exactly that........

The ringing sound is quite loud at the '4' setting, and the vibration alert is good too. I can't see me wanting to change it for a long time yet.

very disappointed with this phone, I upgraded from a 3310i for its longer battery life and all round robustness. But I was severly wrong on this count. The phone does not receive calls and sends the caller directly into my mailbox. If someone leaves a message I get the message approx 12-18hrs later. Inconsistent network availability despite living in a city and frequent power down issues for no apparent reason. Before you say anymore - these are not phone setting issues - I've been using mobile phones since 1996 - this is just a poorly manufactured phone that in my opinion was rushed onto the market without full QC completed. Again thats just my opinion.

I upgrade to this via a 6210 and a 5110, each of them using the same user friendly menu's. Obviously this phone hasn't got a camera, radio or MP3 player like the newer phones but if all you use it for is voicecalls then I'd say this is still the best around. Standby lasts for about ten days if you're away from a charger!!! Buttons are easy to dial with one hand. Alarm is loud, vibrate is strong if you need to be quiet. At the moment I'm thinking of upgrading but can't really see anything worth spending money on to replace it.

The slim design fits in the tightest jeans and the phone memory is excellent - Nokia says it can hold 500 "names" - well I have 500 names & numbers and the "phone memory" is still only 57% utilized. Chuck it , knock it, beer face it - it works! Great phone - however beware! The new phones on the market have truly bewitching offerings (video / music / camera / 24 function swiff army knife / breath analyser / length of dick measurer etc)but these are marketing trinkets only and virtually junk compared to the solid practical offerings of the 6310i. To those considering one as a second hand buy consider the following; 1) See how many of these you see being used by business users who rely on 'phones (you even see the old gold and black models about) 2) Dont worry about bluetooth compatability, mine works with 2 headsets, a Sony organiser and a Mac via USB dongle. It just feels so right in your hand. It oozes quality. Ok, so there is no camera and no colour and no polyphonic ring tones, but after all this is a phone not a gimmick. The white backlight on the display stands it out from other phones for a start. I have had the phone for a week and the battery life bar graph still hasn't dropped from reading full (I've not made many calls but it has been on standby for all that time). There are two drawbacks i met: 1. if I get the sms confirmation while you browse the Outbox (for example, you send the SMS, and then search Outbox to find some message to delete 'cos you want to save the one you just sent) then the mobile hangs 'partially' not letting me go again into the Messages menu. 2. after using Bluetooth (I have a tungsten T3 which I use paired with the phone to connect to Internet) I have to reset the phone, otherwise I won't be able to make/receive any phone calls or send/receive SMS-es. It appears as being online, but nothing comes/goes out. But beside these very rare ocations/inconvenicences, the phone is outstanding. Fast, very nice battery, bit buttons to press, calendar + conectivity, a truly business phone.

easily the best business phone ever. battery backup is exceptional, even when it starts telling you to recharge there is still talktime of about 20-30 minutes standby of about 24 hours ( think about that ). i had a 6210 which i which i lost so went for the 6310 which is practically the same ( lost it as well ). 6310i is the same as 6310 minus a minute of recording time and java applications. i have this set for about seven months now and it has been to the service station twice, kept switching off all the time but now seems ok. i use it extensily and there are no problems at all (daily phone usage is 4-5 hours talk time). the nokia phone editor software for synchronising is great for managing data between laptop and phoneset, tends to hang though with windowsXP its ok with 98 or 2000. bluetooth is simply great. you can use the bluetooth for talking and at the same time transfer data to the laptop. GPRS modem is very primitive and the best i got is 9660 kbps / sec even on HCSC D using a data cable, with bluetooth it shows the max. speed on pc but connection is not better than 28k actually.plus you cannot use the net and talk at the same time, the modem does not allow that. all in all its not perfect but the best business phone considering that you can use it almost anywhere in world, reception and voice quality and above all battery life my acp-12 charges it in 3 hours from zero. the only thing i would like improved is a better generation gprs modem and more recording time for recording conversations. needless to say a cloured screen will be welcome as well though not a necessity.

This phone is excellent overall. The battery life is outstanding - I can easily go 3 or 4 days without recharging and I talk on it a lot! I can't say enough about how great it is to be sure my battery will last such a long time, and the battery meter is very accurate (no surprises like with my old Motorola). The range is not great but I attribute that more to our regional GSM coverage (or lack of it) rather than the phone. The phone has an excellent record feature that I have found very useful - when I don't have a pen to write down every detail, it's great for getting driving directions or whatever. The ability to sync with my Palm is outstanding. I have about 80 people in my 6310i, and each has multiple phone numbers, and the phone handles it perfectly. The lack of a speakerphone is a minor flaw, although given the rest of the phone's great features, it's easily forgivable. I've had this phone for about a year and a half, and while many phones since have had "neat" features like colour screens and polyphonic ringtones (features that the 6310i doesn't have), the 6310i has everything that I need for a serious phone and I think it'll be a long time before I give it up.

Hi! I have the phone for one week now. Had 6210 before, for 2 years. It's much faster than the first one (almost fast as a 3310 in the menus, as compared to 6210 which was slow). Haven't yet filled the Inbox on this one but I expect a speed decrease as the memory space reduces. Attention to details has increased: while on 6210 you could only scroll throuh the special chars (when composing a sms) using up/down buttons, you can now use the buttons 2,4,6,8 and 5 to select. If you missed a call, you have the "Send message" option now being displayed as the second one (after "Time of call"), not almost at the end of the options list. You have also a "Write e-mail" just below "Write message" (in Messages), but even if this is kewl, it has pushed the "Inbox" on the third position, and i got used to it being the second one (as in 6210). I also like to program it, writing midlets is a cute and fine way to feel the phone closer to your heart :). Battery life is better, and phone is a bit lighter than 6210. A plus from 6210 are also: countdown timer, to do list, bloototh, gprs, voice recorder. You can add voice to profiles now, so you can change the profiles quicker than pressing the button on top of the phone. Profiles are also timed. It's true that i would like a 7210 with color screen and more gaming experience (sometimes i have to wait, and having kewl games on mobile is a fun way to make time go by) but 6310i is an excelent phone. I expect it to freeze some times, i got used to this from 6210 which freezed randomly (didn't like to be hold in tight places i guess) but there will be no problem. Hope this helps! Happy buying :)

No buttons worked, no calls could be received and I couldn't unlock the key pad. I Had to take the batery off and crash it. If anyone else has had same problem please log it here as I don't think my Boss believes me.

The Nokia 6310i takes the best features of the 7110e I had before and adds even more. I use the 'phone in conjunction with a laptop and the software supplied on CD-ROM with the 'phone is excellent. It integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Outlook 2000 - synchronising contacts, tasks and it even duplicates my reminders from the calender - alarming at approximately the same point that the reminder pops up on my laptop screen. The modem allows reasonably fast access to e-mails via the standard speed setting. Using the 'phone on its own is own is good enough, but Nokia have really excelled with the additional software tools.

This is the first time I own a Nokia with GPRS (a must have! - GPRS that is). I am using it to connect to the internet amongst other things. This is great as I do not have a land line installed at home (I live out in the country on a farm and the nearest connection point for a landline is 1km away - it will cost me a fortune to get a landline installed. This means no internet - that's where the Nokia comes in!) The other features are also great. I do not use it with a carckit though. Recommended for a wide range of features in the Nokia brand.

Having had many Nokia phones this 6310i is the best so far My only gripe is that it is advertised as being suitable for use with Cark-91 in car kit as supplied for 6210 etc but unfortunately the software conflicts with the car kit, despit having a software upgrade through Nokia it is still not as good as a 6210 in the car kit, However by having the cark-91 carkit wired through the car stereo (with the appropriate relay) I have found it to be acceptable if not the best- Good Phone, easy to use, lightweight.
