Review:
June 2009. Last updated September 2009.
The
Nokia 6303 Classic is the upgrade for the Nokia
6300, which has been a bestseller for the past couple of years
and one of our favourite Nokias of all-time. The 6303 Classic updates
the technology and the styling of the 6300, fixing the 6300's problem
of poor battery life.
Slightly
larger than the 6300, but with rounded edges, the 6303 retains the
smart stainless steel finish of its predecessor, but has a softer,
more rounded style. The 6303 is a few grams heavier than the 6300
and feels good in the palm, but is by no means a heavy phone. One
noticeable design improvement is the larger screen. At 2.2 inches
across, and with 16.7 million colours, this is a comfortable display
for this type of phone, and is bright and with a good number of
pixels (320 x 240). The large screen, well-designed keypad and familiar
Nokia menus make the phone very easy to use.
The
camera has been significantly upgraded and has a 3.2 megapixel detector,
with autofocus and a dual LED flash. Whilst not a replacement for
a dedicated digicam, this is a respectable camera that is capable
of taking print quality pictures under most lighting conditions.
The video recording capability is good too, with a high maximum
resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, although only at 15 frames per second.
There is no video calling, as this is not a 3G handset.
The
music player can handle all standard formats, and there is also
a stereo FM radio with RDS, so that you can see which channel you
are tuned to, and also the details of the music playing. And we're
delighted to see the addition of a 3.5mm headphone jack, which means
that you can plug in any standard-fit headphone of your choice.
An
essential for a music player is a decent amount of memory, and whilst
the 6303 comes with just 17MB of internal flash memory, it has the
option of adding a microSD memory card up to 4GB.
A
major shortcoming of the 6300 was the poor battery life - a common
problem with slimline phones. Nokia seem to have solved this one,
and the 6303 Classic has a significantly extended battery life,
although the quoted figure of 7 hours talktime seems to be optimistic
- was this test carried out standing next to a mobile mast?
Connectivity
is good too. As well as the 3.5mm audio jack previously mentioned,
the 6303 has USB and Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate.
The
6303 is priced at around the £100 mark at launch, so don't
expect lot of high-end features. But it does have some nice touches,
like Nokia Maps (but no GPS received), voice commands, email support
and a web browser. The sales package is generous and includes a
stereo headset, a micro-USB cable and a 1GB memory card. Nokia have
done an excellent job of updating one of our favourite phones, and
we highly recommend this phone for anyone looking for a budget upgrade,
or in search of a solid reliable phone for business or personal
use.
The
new Nokia 6303i Classic is
a slightly updated version with a more powerful battery and improved
social networking.
Features of the Nokia 6303 Classic include:
3.2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, autofocus
and dual LED flash
Video camera (640 x 480 pixels, 15 frames/second)
Display: TFT, 16.7 million colours, 240 x 320
pixels (2.2 inches)
Music player (MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H.263,
H.264 formats)
FM stereo radio with RDS
Integrated loudspeaker
Voice commands and voice recording
MP3 ringtones, 64-voice polyphonic ringtones,
video ringtones
Messaging: SMS, MMS, email,
Instant messaging, Nokia Xpress audio messaging
Java games, Nokia Maps
Personal organiser with calendar, to-do list,
and notes
Memory: 17 MB plus microSD card slot (expandable
up to 4 GB)
Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, USB, 3.5mm
audio jack

Had this phone a week and still on it's first charge, amazing battery
life. Phone easy to use and feels great (after my initial impression
that it was ugly compared to the 6300, I now think it looks great).
One thing, not worth taking a star off but the USB cable I had with
mine is the smallest cable I've ever seen! No way you can plug it

After reading the reviews of the new Nokia 6303, it seemed like
an ideal phone for my wife. What a disappointment the 6303 was though.
If you are expecting the same style and solid feel of its forerunner,
the 6300, you will be greatly disappointed. Yes, the 6303 has a
longer battery life, larger, enhanced screen, and better camera.
But it does feels bigger and isn't as easy to use as the 6300, especially
single handed - the rounded corners and the cramped teardrop keys
seem to be the problem. Also, below the screen, the top three keys
slope slightly. They also lack the positive feel of the oblong 'individual'
keys on the 6300. Nokia seem to have taken a retrograde step with
the case and keyboard design on this upgrade. Of course, it's all
a matter of taste and, no doubt, the 6303 will become one of the
best-selling phones in it's sector. But, quite simply, the 6303
lacks the elegance and class of it's predecessor, the 6300. Note
1: This post only covers the silver version of the 6303: two black
versions are also available. Note 2: if you need to try the 6303
keys, use an actual 6303 phone rather than the 'dummy' demo models
displayed in many outlets- their key action often doesn't represent
the real thing. Note 3: the 6303 doesn't have the 8500 MHz band
(not sure if this is important anymore for overseas communications).
6300: GSM/EDGE (900/1800/1900; 850/1800/1900) 6303: EGSM (900/1800/1900)

the MAPS app. Really good. Use it for my delivery job, helps so
much. The phone feels really well made, the stainless steel feels
nice. The display is great, very easy to read. Camera is good with
flash. The only issue I would say (and it's a small issue that doesn't
worth -1 star) is that the vibrate could be better. I was walking

chosen it because of the good screen resolution of 240 x 320 pixels

battery life, makes it a great phone. The 3.5 mm audio jack is a
nice bonus. I have updated the phone software with Nokia PC suite,

To the people who are experiencing problems with the time of received
texts. If you go into settings and set the actual time to 1 hour
earlier than it actually is. Then go to daylight saving and add
1 hour. This will correct your phones clock to the correct time,
and the time on received texts should now be accuate. You will have
to take this hour off in October when the clocks go back 1 hour.

I have managed to get a work around I set time to show the correct
time, I then set the time zone at GMT+1 and the Daylight saving
to show +0 hours. This allows me to send and receive texts at the
same real time, so that's solved. However, when the clocks go back
at end of October, I have tried this out already and what you have
to do is set the time and set the time zone as just GMT. The Daylight
saving stays the same +0 hours. The text you send and the textyou
receive back are exactly the same. Tony or anyone else who wants
to give it a go, do and let me know if my workaround/theory is correct.

to use, however, one thing I am hoping someone can help with is
why do you have to change the time to GMT+1 in order that when you
send texts when someone replies they are relying at the same time.
I have found that if you do not change the time to GMT+1 then when
you send a text, when someone replies the time shows that it is
an hour earlier. For example if i have set the phone as 13.00 hours
and send a text, it gets received at the other end at this time.
However when that person replies to the text, it shows up as being
sent at 12.00. However, when I have changed the time to GMT+1 and
send a text and someone replies it gets replied to at the right
time. Has anyone else experienced this. Grateful if someone can

I`ve had this phone for 3 days now. Battery is very good. Phone
is very easy to use. Typing is very easy, buttons are very responsive.
Signal strength is excellent. Phone feels solid but light. Only
downside is small internal memory. I keep getting prompted to delete
items from phone even though it has a 1 GB card. I assumed once
phone memory is full that the memory card would take the "overflow".
It doesn`t. Also the SAR rating is high, 1.15w/kg. Other phones
can operate at half this. Firm ware update was farely easy. Rating:

I bought this phone and i like the solid feel and its being "durable"
because of its stainless look. However, as I am doing some tinkering
with the phone, I discovered that the LCD can have "visual noise"
when you are browsing internet. ALso, the voice recognition thing
doesn't work at all and will cause your phone to restart. WHat a
shame. Sound quality is good even in external speakers but it was
a little underpowered. Battery life is good but since I am a very
heavy user, it usually just takes 2-4 days before charging. Picture
quality is not good most of the time but there are cases that the
focus is very very good (doing personal shots with flash at perfect
focus) however, this only happens 1/20 of the time. However, since
I bought the phone for its durability, then I dont regret buying
this. BTW, the firmware of this phone might need some updating. Rating:

Basically a very good phone bought to replace an old Nokia (which
had a long battery life) that was starting to die. The long battery
life of the 6303 was the primary driver for purchase and this seems
to be correct. A couple of initial niggles 1. Case of phone was
not properly assembled and needed to be snapped into place. 2. the
contact between the charger plug and the charging point in the phone
could be better. this means I have to be careful where I put the
phone when charging it. I should also point out the photos and videos
are snapshot quality - if you want to take a sharp photo use a camera

I've had in the last two years was the original Nokia 6300. Unfortunately
it recently bit the the dust and as it has been replaced by the
6303, which promised to fix all the little niggles that people had
with the 6300, I decided to give it a go. I've had it a week now
on the Vodafone network and am even more impressed with this than
the 6300. Still has the excellent steel build quality and ease of
use, but the 6303 is curvier, the keys are easier to use, the camera
has been updated to 3.2 megapixels with an LED flash, micro-SD cards
are now supported to expand the phone's memory. battery life is
fantastic (like the basic Nokia models of years ago!). It's smart

offer expired! Mostly I like the phone, although the camera shutter
delay is, like so many at this price level, painfully slow. Also
I'm amazed the phone will not charge through the USB cable - this
should be standard these days. Fortunately I have a cheap universal
charger kit from Tesco which does the job. Can't get the bluetooth
to work with my 2006 Audi A6 though, unlike the 6230i I am replacing

on the key pad are spaced to far apart which makes txting a pain, when
txting you need to physically change from letters to numbers before

I like reviews on Mobile Phones Uk website but there is never a
mention of Specific Absorption Rate(SAR). Nokia 6303 has SAR of
1.15 W/kg which places it in the same league as most Blackberry
phones. Comparing this with Nokia 6300 that has got a much lower
SAR 0.57 W/Kg. [Editor's reply: Thanks for your comments, A F. We
do have a SAR ratings page, but we don't keep
it as up to date as we should. Few people seem to be interested.
A SAR rating of 1.15 is higher than average, but is still well below
the EU limit of 2.0. In any case, the value of 1.15 is a peak rating,
and is no guide to the value that will be experienced in practice.
You should not rely on a low SAR rating to
guarantee your health. But in any case there is no evidence that
mobile phones cause any kind of damage to long term health.]
