Nokia 6300 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: Our favourite Nokia for years and the only Nokia phone ever to be rated 5 stars by our users. A classic design with a beautiful stainless steel finish. Slim, elegant, easy to use and with a good quality 2 megapixel camera, a built-in MP3 player, memory expandable to 2 Gbytes, and wireless Bluetooth connectivity. Only the below-average battery life stops this from getting 5 stars. Available in silver, black, white and chocolate.

Review: March 2007. Updated June 2009.

Nokia's slogan for the 6300 is "Simply beautiful - beautifully simple." The beauty comes from the sleek, classic design with stainless-steel surfaces, and the simplicity reflects the fact that this is an all-round kind of phone: not a smartphone, not 3G, but including all of the functionality that most people want. Sounds like a winner! Could Nokia finally be getting back to what it used to do best - a phone that does just what you want and does it well?

Certainly the phone looks good when you pick it up. It's like the early 6-series Nokia's: exclusive- and expensive-looking, practically designed with a good sized screen and functional keypad, yet updated for 2007 with a 5-way navigation button and high quality colour display. The size is perfect: it's very slim (just 11.7mm) and not too wide, and the weight is enough to make it feel solid and substantial, but not so much that it feels heavy. The keypad is a decent size and is easy to use. The display is exceptional: a high resolution 240 x 320 pixel display with an amazing 16 million colours. On the outside the 6300 ticks all the right boxes.

On the inside, the phone is equipped with all the features that a typical user would expect. The camera is 2 megapixels with an 8x digital zoom and with a video recording function. Enough for casual photography, but not brilliant. There's a music player and an FM radio. A standard Nokia headset is included in the sales package and support for a Bluetooth stereo headset is included. Memory for storing music is limited, with just 7.8 Mbytes of user memory, however you can expand the memory to a maximum of 2 Gbytes by buying a microSD card, which will give you as much memory as an iPod Nano. Both Bluetooth and USB connectivity are supported, and the phone has GPRS and EDGE for fast data downloads. Battery life is below average, which is often the case with superslim phones. The user interface is a standard Series 40 interface, that Nokia users will be used to, but with the latest enhancements. It's basically a very easy phone to use, with everything well thought out and some real attention to detail.

This is our favourite Nokia phone for a long time. It really is beautiful - quality just oozes out of the phone when you pick it up. The metallic finish completes the look, although this may show scratches if not treated carefully. Ergonomics and user-friendliness are good. The strange thing is that Nokia built their reputation with phones like this, but what have they been doing these past few years with their funky but unusable fashion-phones and their buggy brick-like smartphones? Welcome back Nokia! It was worth the wait!

The new Nokia 6303 Classic updates this phone with new features including more memory and improves the battery life too.

Features of the Nokia 6300 include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom
  • Video camera (176 x 144 pixels)
  • Display: TFT, 16.7 million colours, 240 x 320 pixels (2 inches)

This is a super phone that does all the important things really well. Looks and feels right. Clarity is great. Screen superb for texts and emails. Simple to use. Email and web fine once set up. Even comes with Opera browser. Voice dialing is a joke (try AA) but voice commands not too bad. If you don't want 3G, this is the phone to get and at a bargain price.

Being a sucker for a pretty face i went and bought the 8800 about 2 months after it came out. I really just use me phone for calling and texting so camera, mp3 and all that stuff has no affect on how i use my phone. I thought the 8800 was great EXCEPT for the awful battery life. This is my first proper upgrade since then and i think its the bizz. Had it 2 days and its great. If the battery lasts 3 days thats ok with me as im use to charging the 8800 once a day and having to carry a spare battery. Has all the features you need if you need a phone for talking to people on. Great size and feel. Ill stick with this one for a while.

I highly recommend this phone. Had it for nearly 2 months. No nonsense design with an appealing feel. I gasped with pleasure when I first took this out of the box in the O2 store. One serious flaw is poor battery life mainly due to the fat power-hungry TFT screen (good visibility in direct sunlight). I am lucky if I get 3 days use before having to charge. The camera is grainy but good enough for snaps. If you want to browse the internet try one of those business phones. If you are a budding photographer - buy a camera. This is an excellent well-designed no frills personal communicator.

Never been a big fan of cells, as it's sort of a status mark around here, but my old Siemens M65 was pretty much dead, so I needed a replacement. Siemens/Benq have gone down the drain so I turned my eye to good ole' Nokia. 6300 had to be it. It's one of these phone you keep holding in your palms for hours, because it feels just so... right. The menu / feature are really intuitive (even though I never used a Nokia before). I never cared about cell cameras (maybe because I own a Canon dSLR :), and 3G isn't all that popular as of yet, so I don't care about these. My sole disappointment is the battery life -- heavy usage -- 24 hours, moderate usage 36 hours, light usage about 48 hours. Talk time really drains the battery down, and that's what people use a phone for, right? It doesn't have IR, but come one IR is dead given BlueTooth. I really recommend this phone to people who would give it moderate usage, don't need the latest BS technology (such as camera flash etc.) but enjoy style and grace. It's a gem.

I've had this phone for a while, very nice and handy, basically above many phones to date.Practicality is excelence for those who actually use it as a phone, infact it'more than sufficient considering what a phone should provide and the real plus is all functions work very well and fast.Personally I don't consider camera and video performance to be in first place of the technical spec, what matter most is size, built quality.speedy and clear reception. This phone has good keyboard, the side +/- buttons deserve a credit for being hard, which is always accidentaly hit while pulling out from pockets. The display under sunlight is also worth a praise as it is visible and clear. The battery is normal but not poor, because while phone still new many people play with it whole day just to explore but when they actually use it normally then it's different, and that's what I experience. In my opinion this is a very good phone to had and when you owned one you'll realize the nokia 6300 is going to be your companion for a long time (I had the n70 for two years),I'm very much happier with this and at it's price it's very reasonable.Oh, I almost forget to mention that the mini USB that link you to your computor is not in the package but if you have a digital camera, the USB cable from it is usable, mine works from my Samsung digital camera USB cable, don't forget to install the software from the CD onto your pc.I want to share this with all who owned the 6300, I'm vey happy with mine.

But from other reveiws, i think all are the same. not sure how Nokia managed to botch that up!!! Camera is good - even though it has no flash - if you activate 'night mode' the picture comes out as if its day time and i would say even better than having flash. nice, slim, elegant and stylish - definitely. Would recommend it, but if charging the battery daily or every two days is a problem - then dont get it. IT does all the things you want it to do. No fancy things that may annoy you.

Nokia got it right this time. Many other phones boast of functions and superior technology in a fancy looking but cheap quality plastic casing. Most of the phones are attractive while on display but when you got them home you'll soon regret their constuction, slow or excessive functions more than neccesary. While it's still new you might overlook all these but after the honeymoon you start to hate charging it. Nokia 6300 is the phone you can withstand these with three good points- first the excelent construction and it's material used, second it's perfect size and third, speedy interface. I confirm this is so far best.

The 6300 is a truely beautiful fone, it looks and feels solid in your hands and well contructed albeit the rattling power switch. The numberic buttons are great and notably comfortable to use. And the blue alert lights on the side are a great touch! Internally its a typical nokia interface, with the ability to customise everything. The standard Noir theme is also great. Feature wise its good, with everything you could want, with a very good 2MP camera. In fact i found this camera to be sharper than the 2MP one on my previous 6280, and that had a flash! Battery life isnt great, im not a heavy user but will usually make at least 40mins of calls per day, and it last 2days, so not great, but managable. Overall a superb phone, Love it!

I am giving this phone Excellent but not Outstanding coz -- Though as such it has no problems at all I am using it for the last two weeks but Nokia could have improved on two things in this phone -- Camera is not upto the mark of 2MP (as compared to SE phones)and music player is missing "BASS". But I can understand with this size (sleek and slim) -- already much has been clubbed in it. Anyways best of its class till now. One of the sleekest sets Nokia has produced till to date. Classy and stylish with brilliant 16.7 million colours screen. Decent screen size. Excellent functionality for people who are looking for a simple phone with not so extravagant E and N-Series like features. Beware of finger smudges and scratches on both the plastic and metal covers. I suggest keeping it in a protective casing although original leather case is not available for all regions and preloaded softwares also differ by region. It has an N-Series type thin charging pin connector so old Nokia chargers wont work unless you have a converter. Solidly built …. No creaks. Boasts a radio with a nice music player although the quality of the bundled stereo ear buds is average, Mini SD up to 2 GB available. Phone’s internal user available memory of 7.8 MB is considered quite lame these days although it does come packed with a 128 MB card. Nevertheless, you will end up buying a bigger card sooner than you think . Poor camera results especially in low light as compared to other 2MP cameras in the same price rang. No flash and lens protection cover. Video recording also pitiable. Camera is by far the weakest feature on the phone as far as I am concerned. Loud but mono speaker at the back. Below average battery life as compared to other 6 series models. Volume buttons on the side hard to press especially when held closer to the ear during a conversation. No 3G. Earphone above the screen could have been louder; a definite problem in a crowded place (I tried sticking the phone as close to my ear as possible in a restaurant to hear the person on the other side of the line but it was hard). Average navigation key functionality especially the upper key is hard to press as it is quite close to the screen and you invariably end up either smudging the screen or to save the screen, pressing the center button (I recommend using the nail of your thumb to press the upper navi key). Not recommende d for people with above average size fingers. The blue lights on sides of the phone only blink twice for an incoming message alert but not indefinitely. This seems useless since you already get to know about the incoming message through the sound and vibration alert. The cool blue lights should do more like continue to blink and remind me about my unread messages till they are read. In my opinion it can be fixed with a software upgrade by Nokia. The painted red power sign on the plastic power button on top will not last long; mine lasted a week with only decent moderate use.... it just vanished with the touch. So painting quality on the plastic is an issue. I was not expecting it from a device like this and after paying more the $330 for it. All in all, the 6300 can be called 'A physically fit phone with a mild case of flu'. For looks I give it 8.5 out of 10. Camera gets a poor 5.5. Battery gets a mediocre 6. Functionality gets a decent 7.8. Screen colour gets a whooping 9. Overall a well above average 7.5 to an 8 for its class. As for its overall features & looks, you are quite likely to end up calling it “My Precious!” Recommended!

Very easy to use and the display is so clear compared to the 6230i I had. Camera is very good and clear along with all the other features. Shame it didn't have my old original nokia ringtone "diazinon" on it but hey ho never mind. All in all a very good phone for the price, good value for money with all the up to date features but still keeping it quite simple without it being like a mini pc like most phones seem to be these days, oh but they should of put more themes on it, that is a downer !!!!!

Singlehandedly best phone I've ever owned. Build quality is excellent, second to none. And however ludricrous it seems, I agree with Saad: I like to hold the phone in my hand, as it is very... comforting. This, of course creates a problem. The silver finish is GORGEOUS and insanely hard to maintain and keep clean. I've had it for four days and I've already managed to scratch it. Attracts fingerprints like no other, since it is so pretty and nice to hold, everyone seems to WANT to hold it. Not a flashy phone, but gorgeous and a GOOD phone. Does things phones are meant to do insanely well. Call quality is excellent. Keypad is a pleasure to use to text, unlike the MOTO phones. Beautiful display. Can't seem to stop gushing about this phone. I have no regrets. BUY THIS PHONE!

The phone is pretty decent looks wise, reminds me of the classic phones made by nokia, interface is very responsive, .gif wallpapers really look very good, applications do not take a long time to launch, speaker sound is one of the best i have seen in nokia, included games are decent enough, would have liked to get a data cable in the package but it wasn't there, back cover is hard to take off and attach properly, build quality of the top power button is disappointing, in all a rock solid effort by nokia, it may have a life longer than the 6600.

The Nokia 6300 has perhaps the best build quality among mobile phones currently available in the market. It benefits from ample features (such as the 2 megapixel camers and the mp3/video player), unbeatable design and finish, and an easy-to-use user interface. The ergonomics are truly fantastic and the phone feels solid (in fact, I find it mildly comforting!). It excels over all its rivals. Sony Ericsson have produced some good camera phones and walkman phones but their phones are essentially pieces of plastic. The same can be said for Samsungs, most LGs and some Nokias. However, the 6300 is an exceptional phone that exudes elegance and simplicity. The only drawbacks are the lack of flash and 3G support. But all things considered, I feel that the Nokia 6300 is the best phone of 2007 and one that does not everything but most things, and does them well. If you want a phone with advanced features like flash and autofocus and 3G either just for the sake of having them or because you regularly use them, then this is not the phone for you. But, if you want to stand apart from others and want a phone that will never let you down and survive the winds of time, then the Nokia 6300 is a phone for YOU.

I needed a replacement for my 6230i... and I was told the E50 was it but I changed my mind... as the E50 is a bit bulky and ugly though it has features that most business users need I think Nokia got it the wrong way around... this has most features that you need and not to mention an outstanding stand-by time.. all it needs is infra-red and it is complete. That is the only let down for me but otherwise I love it.. even if I have to be careful so it doesnt get scratched.

This is truly an excellent phone, probably one of the best on the market at the moment, but it could so easily have been the best. the sillyest little things prevent it from being outstanding: the awkward volume switch on the side, no dedicated camera button or flash, the headphone quality is dull and should have a volume control on it, fonts could be larger still especially in text, small clock, hey Nokia pay attention! everyone needs the time so a nice big analogue or digital clock taking up the whole screen even on 'stand-by' is what we need ok? personal photo's and themes need to fill out the whole screen not just a portion of it. and fourtnightly repeats have been removed for some reason.... :( having said all that, this phone is tougher than it looks, and is for the demanding user who also likes style. well done for the standard usb and headphone sockets. very good camera, easy to use, long battery life, easily the best phone nokia have produced so far.

Outstanding. I am very impressed with this phone. My first Nokia. I have previously used SE's, Samsung's and Motorola's and this is the best phone I've used. It has a very fast and capable processor (often over looked in phones) but this allows you to play really good quality games, while listening to the radio or playing mp3's. Its very impressive. Call quality is clear. Texting is simple. It feels good in your hands and button pushes give a nice crisp click. I've now had this phone for four weeks and use it daily as an mp3 player and radio. I was worried after reading some reports about it stalling/crashing, but I haven't experienced a single one. It's best feature has to be its amazing screen. Its a VGA screen, the first I've used on a phone. Works well outside on sunny days and looks beautiful indoors! 240x320 resolution. Its a cmos camera, so don't expect it to compair to SE's latest line of shooter/phones, but its a phone that screams quality, has enough features to keep you busy and just works! Just found a new feature recently, it has a bluetooth exchange program, so when you're in a club you can message people, swap photos and movies all free, it really is damn cool!

I'm not too bothered about phones, to be honest, but Nokia have gone back to basics here and have produced a lovely little phone. If you're not interested in 3G etc then this is probably the nicest phone on the consumer market. Not for business people as the talk time is not great, but I expect this is because the media functions use up quite a bit of memory. You will not be disappointed if you buy this phone.

I have been using this phone since February and I am pretty pleased with it. I upgraded to it from Samsung D600, which I really liked. I have now gotten used to using a Nokia again. It feels great to hold, it's easy to use, the display is super sharp, battery life is v good, and it's a fab looking phone. One downside for me (& the reason I give it 4 stars) is that it isn't a very loud phone and the standard ring and message tones are not great. I have the volume set to 5, but still miss calls (the D600 was way louder!) I also don't think the sound quality on calls is too hot - it could be much clearer. Again, the D600 was better. However, I like the phone, and would recommend it.

This is a fantastic phone. I've had mine for about 3 weeks. It was so simple to set up and I've personalised it already. I've never had anything other than a NOkia, as they're so user friendly. The phone itself is a fantastic design, very sleek and simple. The features, not so simple. Everything but a teas-made on this phone. The camera takes fantastic pics, despite being only a 2 megapixel. The only drawback to this phone is that the battery doesn't last too long. I think this may be due to the fact that there is a blue light, indicating when you receive a new text message or have a reminder from your calendar. All in all, I'd strongly recommend this phone.

I was reluctant to change my phone until I found one I really liked. Then I saw a preview of the 6300, fell in love with the looks and ordered it as soon as I could. It’s the most stylish phone I have had and part of the appeal is that it isn’t a 3G smartphone, which I don’t need so, hopefully, less to go wrong. It looks and feels classy, has a very clear display and the keys light up blue, so are easy to see in all lighting. Texting is quick and easy. I suppose a minor drawback to some might be that you have to take the back off to remove the memory card but as I don’t do this very often it doesn’t matter to me and keeps the phone looking sleek. The camera is ok, not wonderful, but has various effects, such as sepia and greyscale which are interesting. I agree with the voice recognition complaint but I can live with that. I love this phone
