Nokia
6288 Review
Phone
rating:
In a nutshell:
A 3G slide phone from Nokia, the 6288 is an attractive phone
available in a high gloss black or white finish. This is a high-end
phone with an excellent 2 megapixel camera, 3G video calling, a
music player, FM radio plus Bluetooth wireless connectivity and
a memory card slot for storing lots of music and videos. However,
the 6288 doesn't have the greatest battery life and some users have
experienced problems with reliability.
Best buy: *Free* from Three.
The
Nokia 6288 is an updated version of the 6280
3G slide phone. It has a high gloss finish, available in black
or white, and is an attractively styled slide phone.
On
paper, the 6288 is identical to the 6280. The one difference is
that the 6288 ships with a larger 512 Mbyte card.
The
6288 is a high-end phone with most of the features found on a smartphone,
except that it uses a fast Series 40 operating system instead of
a Symbian operating system. It comes equipped with an excellent
2 megapixel camera with a flash and digital zoom, and a second VGA
camera for video recording and for making video calls. The display
is one of the best on the market - a TFT display with 320 x 240
pixels and 262,144 colours.
The
phone comes with a stereo music player compatible with MP3, MP4,
AAC and eAAC+ formats, as well as an FM radio. With a 512 Mbyte
memory card you can store plenty of tracks, and the memory card
can be expanded further if desired.
The
6288 is fully specified with features such as enhanced voice dialling,
a voice recorder, an integrated handsfree speaker, email and Nokia
Xpress audio messaging. There are three 3D Java games supplied with
the phone - 3D Rally, 3D Golf & 3D Snake and you can download more.
The
3G connection is very fast, and the phone also supports EDGE for
fast downloads in 2G mode. Connectivity is excellent, with Bluetooth,
USB and infrared all supported.
The old 6280 was an unreliable phone and users reported all kinds
of problems with it. Nokia have evidently worked on this and the
6288 is a more reliable phone, but still not up to scratch. Three
issues prevent us from recommending this phone - first the battery
life is not very good - secondly, a number of users are reporting
problems with the phone shutting down by itself, which reminds us
of the software problems that the 6280 suffered from - and thirdly,
the phone is simply not durable, with many users experiencing problems
with the slide mechanism in particular, but also with the LCD screen
breaking. We can't highly recommend any of Nokia's current sliding
phones, so if you want a 3G slider you might consider the highly-rated
Sony Ericsson W850i.

- 3G

- 2
megapixel camera with digital zoom and flash
- Video
camera (VGA resolution) for video calling

I bought this phone and loved it for a week until I travelled on
business between Luxembourg and France - now I HATE IT. First problem
was that it picked up SFR network but I did not have a strong enough
signal to make calls. (Thankfully I had my old, trusted Nokia 6310i
with me). It had the same network with full strength signal. Swapping
the SIM cards (I have twin SIM cards for the same mobile number
from the same network provider) helped for a while. The next day
I travelled back to Luxembourg and even though the 6288 is set to
Automatic Network selection - it still has SFR as the network for
Luxembourg which of course does not work here! On top of which the
battery life is extremely poor. Long live the 6310i

I love my new phone BUT I HATE the fact that the backlight only
lasts 8 - 10 seconds! It's so annoying especially when I'm writing
a text and thinking about what to say and it goes off in the middle
of it. Also I like my display to be lit in the day so I can see
if a text or call comes in when it's on silent. I HATE the black
screen. I tried power saver and screensaver but it hasn't solved
it. I was hoping this could be fixed but by reading other reviews
it seems not...Very frustrating. Other than my one moan it's a fantastic
phone, very sleek and it looks great.

The phone is great, I mean just too great but the only snag is that
you cant store symbian application and the internal memory is just
to small compared to the external one. In all it is a five star

This phone is very fragile, had it 2 weeks and discovered it had
broken LCD screen, just from carrying it in my pocket.Nokia refuse
to repair under warranty as they deem this as "physical damage",and
this gives them an "out" from warranty repairs.I will never buy
another Nokia becuase of the poor lack of care given, by this company
to their customers and I would urge you to give them a miss also.

I think this phone is fantastic! I've had it for nearly 3 months
now and haven't had any problems. Battery life goes for around 2
and a half days without re-charging (and that's with regular talk
use in mind to). Sound quality is excellent, the software that came
with it is incredibly user-friendly and allowed me to upload MP3
ringtones in 30 seconds or so. The camera is excellent, the zoom
function can get a little blurred at the maximum zoom and the resolution
of the picture drops at max zoom (but that was expected). The flash
and night-mode are also very easy to activate and very effective.
The buttons are fairly easy to use although I have occasionally
made a mistake when sending a text as I might go a little fast as
the buttons are a bit small for some people I would think. The slide
function allows you to answer and hang up by sliding the phone which
was a very nice feature. The menu functions on the phone were easy
to understand and use, activating Infrared and Bluetooth were INCREDIBLY
easy compared to my old phone (NEC e616). Customising the phone
in redgards to wallpapers, custom ringtones for different friends,
importing pictures for friends profiles has been so simple, my parents
(who are almost completely phone illiterate) could do it. The only
things I could fault the phone with are that sometimes, getting
it out of a tight pocket (such as jeans) can be difficult if it
starts to slide around and I have gotten a little bit of dust under
the screen somehow...but that's cleanable once I bother to take
the cover off. I have dropped it a couple of times, on concrete
and other surfaces and there have been very light scratches on the
covers but never the screen and considering I was running at one
point and it fell out, I thought the scratches would be a lot worse
so I think it's pretty durable. This is the best phone I've had
(3rd phone, first was a Nokia 8310, second was a NEC e616 which
was pretty bad). I'd recommend this phone to anyone who not only
wants a phone with extra features to play around with but someone
who wants a durable, reliable and fairly well-sized phone.

I've had this phone about a week now and, at the risk of repeating
what other reviewers have written, the slide mechanism is abit delicate
- it doesn't 'waggle' about though as some reviewers have suggested.
In my opinion it isn't so flimsy as to cause me concern! I agree
that the battery life is a bit ropey - I've had to charge mine every
night since I've had it but I'm going to put that down to some extent
to the fact hat as it's anew phone I'm messing with it quite abit.
I absolutely love the screen! Is massive and makes the 2 megapixal
camera seem alot clearer than it probably is and I also think the
video camera is very good compared to others I've seen with similar
resolutions. The games are fantastic (snake 3, golf, and a car rally
game) particularly Snake which I've become adicted to again (after
last plying Snake 2 on on my Nokia 7210 many moons ago!!) The music
player is very clear - as good as my I-Pod and with the inbox memory
card there's plenty of room to fit lots of tracks on (the downloading
software is very easy to use - if I can do it anyone can!) Overall
I've upgraded to this from a Samsung D600 which although a good
phone was very very VERY BORING!!!! With massive emphasis on the
boring. I'm very pleased with this phone and have no hesitation
in awarding it full marks!

I bought the nokia 6288 for one month plus. It's working great so
far. Has a decent 2 MegaPixel Camera with flash and a great 640*480
video recording resolution. The video recording resolution is the
main reason why I chose nokia 6288 over Sony Ericsson k800i. No
software problems (as reported by 6280 users) so far. On the downside,
the phone's glossy surface has your fingerprints on it easily. It
seems to be easily scratched too (some mild, not so visible scratches
after 3 weeks of use only. Maybe because I rub it too often to clean
off the fingerprint marks?) so I bought a crystal casing for it.
But on the whole, the phone is splendid! Camera, Video, FM radio
and a free 512Mb memory card. A good buy.

One word to describe this phone- IT IS THE BOMB! Got it after my
N70 angered me with its lagg to the extend that I threw it into
a pool. So now, a simple review on the 6288. The pros: -High quality
display with huge screen.(Easily the best in the market) -Fairly
good battery, lasted me 5 days of messagings and a couple of calls.
-Good slide mechanism with easy assisting spring, lets you open
the phone easily. -Reasonable music player, no creeks at highest
volume.(Althought lacks bass compared to various walkman phones)
-Very clear camera, on par with the k750i with only the lack of
auto-focus in the way. -Comfortable keypad, smooth touch and easy
to press with mere resistance. -Came with a 512mb memory card, now
who can resist that! -Easy user-interface of menue, not new to Nokia
fans. -Symbian S40 loaded, so theres no lags even when you want
it! The cons: -Backlighting duration only of a mere 8-10 seconds.
-Awkward battery backcover, took me a sledgehammer to open it. -Glossy
material used on body, prone to fingerprints(But its scratch-free!)
-Keypad number 1,2,3 too close to screen- hard to press for people
with large thumbs.(Nokia didn't learn from 6280 and N80 :/) -Camera
no auto-focus.(Alright I am being a little picky here) -Gallery

I am very pleased with this unit. Coming from Windows powered phones,
I never expected to go back to a Nokia. But the 6288 has convinced
me. Very nice features, very practical and incredibly easy to use.
If you're thinking of value for your money, this phone is just 3
features shy of an N80. Just make sure you're not too far from a
charger--the phone eats juice like there's no tomorrow.

I recently bought this phone and I love all the features on it.
Great quality features-wise - but the battery life is HORRIBLE.
At first I could get about 48 hours life on it without much use.
But just now, I charged it at night before I went to sleep, and
when I woke up in the morning it was already BATTERY LOW. I DIDN'T
EVEN USE IT DURING THOSE 12 HOURS!! Awful!!! But I think it depends
on your individual phone or battery, as I know someone else who
has the same phone but his battery life lasts him 4 days. Wish I
knew what the exact problem was.

Ili, i have a 6280 so the menu will be the same, what u do to stop
the fone screen from goin dark is to go into settings then look
for where it says power settings, u should see sleep mode, make
sure this is switched off. a warning will come up about consuming
battery, ignore this as you dont notice a difference. It depends
on the battery depending on how many charges it takes to get the
battery to be gr8, it take around 20hrs of fully charging AND DISCHARGING
to get the battery at its optimum level. I found that the white
light setting is a useless feature as all it does is obscure peoples
face with to much false light added in the video. Leave it off and
you will get gr8 videos!! Good luck, hope i helped.

This is a GREAT phone. I bought mine three days ago and I'm surprised
with the quality of the camera and the videos that you can watch
on it. 3 things to mention though:--- - I haven't figured out how
to activate the SLEEP MODE ,the SCREEN SAVER & the POWER SAVER.
The screen darkens after a few seconds but stays active, though
consuming battery. Do I have to do a Firmware update to fix this?
I would appreciate it very much if someone could help me on that.
- I've done 2 full battery charges so far (10 hours each) but the
battery seems to be getting low after a day of medium use. How many
charges are needed to get the battery work great? - How is the "White
Level" setting used to help me get more light when I record video
in dim light? Thanx!

Brought the phone since December 31, 06... The phone has been great,
actually brought it off in hK, @ a broadway store.... I'd say everything
is great for the 6288 but I wish some minor improvements can be
made.. For example, using the volume button to scroll down lists
of mp3's, pictures and etc. Instead of scrolling down 1 by 1, you
can scroll it down as a page... Makes it more efficient... Anyhow,
other than that, I think the phone is perfect...

Love my new 6288 but coming from an LGU8180 find the messaging a
little bit less user friendly. I am happy in all regards except:
1 - The back light turns off after 8 seconds which can get annoying
and I cannot find any options to extend that, even playing with
sleep modes and power savers (if im missing something please tell
me) 2 - Its fairly annoying to have to keep the headset plugged
in to listen to the radio even when you are listening to it on loud
speaker. 3 - When playing music, the sound is good but doesnt go
up loud enough. The PC software is simple and much less touchy than
any other ive had and bluetooth is a breeze. I plan to get a cover
as Ive been warned that the screen is easily broken. I have no comments
about battery life because I put my phone on charge every night
before bed but it seems to be very good for me. I would reccomend
this phone to anyone bearing in mind that if you want the highest
quality camera and mp3 player money can buy then you need to buy
them as seperate items. A phone is meant to send messages and manange
calls - everything else is an extra.

I got this phone a little under a week ago, and I'm very impressed
with it. The camera is good enough for a phone... seriously, if
you wanted a good camera, why didn't you just go BUY ONE? The playback
of mp3 files is rather fantastic too... the quality of the screen
is amazing. The colours are bright and everything is perfectly defined.
The only downsides would have to be: 1. Having to plug in the headphones
for radio playback. It gets a little annoying 2. How the camera
goes grainy in low light. It's irritating 3. The main display...
the arranging on the icons/information. It's messy and looks...
ugh. I'm just picking on the small things... so far it's a good
phone.

The middle navigation key is also very loose. Fingermarks on this

I'm guessing half these people on here don't own this phone, because
I'm finding the phone really good and I'm surprised at it's battery.
I use it all the time, watching TV on it (which is good coz the
screen is bright in the day too...I did however have the razr before
this phone) and have been playing music from it (which is really
good quality music too) and been on it practically non stop. The
battery lasts much longer than my razr so maybe that's why I'm grateful.
People sound like they expect too much from phones these days. Everyone
I've shown my phone to has wowed over it and loves playing with
it. Maybe coz the people I know don't waste their lives having to
have the best phone in the universe. It's a phone and I know there
probably are super great ones out there..but who care..I love my
phone and I think it's features are awesome..the camera's not so
great inside but outside it is beautiful! I took great photo's of
some beaches for my background the other day and they look beautiful!
It's a phone..it does it's job...go buy a camera if you don't like
it...it's main job is a phone...and if you want more than it already
has then get a life and stop being a yuppie or maybe a person who
just has to show everyone they have the best of everything....some
people don't have phones..so be thankful that you got a really good
phone and spend that extra money you would on an even better phone
on your friends or people who need help!

i cant believe some of the comments in here. battery life if a little
short seems to be ok to me. some people might want to try putting
their phone on the charger while they are asleep instead of whining
when it goes flat after a few days. and as for weight/chunkiness
i have no problem with it and i dont believe anyone can complain
about this unless buying the phone without checking it out first.
i have had the phone for 2 days now and have had no trouble at all
from connecting to the blue tooth in my car to copying pictures
and songs from my pc to the phone. my only complaints are if they
could even be called that is the closeness of the top keys to the
top section of the slide sometimes making it a little hard to write
text quickly and using the flash can cause the photos to appear
somewhat blue. havnt had the problem as yet but i believe the case
and screen of the phone may scratch easily due to design and materials
used. all in all after 2 days i have had no problems with the phone
and am very happy with it.
