Nokia 6230i
Review
Phone
rating:
The Nokia 6230i, released in the first quarter
of 2005, is a few years old now and definitely not at the cutting
edge, but is a design classic and still a good phone. The fact that
it's still in the shops more than two years after launch proves
that it's got a lot going for it!
The 6230i has a decent 65k screen with a bright
active matrix display and a good resolution, although it lags behind
newer phones. The 1.3 megapixel camera is acceptable, and the video
recorder can record for up to 1 hour.
A welcome feature is the memory card that can be
expanded up to 512 Mbytes. This provides plenty of capacity for
storing videos and MP3 tracks.
In terms of connectivity, the 6230i has it all:
wireless Bluetooth capability, plus USB cable and infrared
options. Internet access is fast with EDGE high-speed data transfer,
and the phone is equipped with an XHTML browser for viewing websites.
Email is also available.
There are a range of voice features including voice
dialling, voice commands and an integrated handsfree speaker.
All things considered, the 6230i is still a nice
phone. There are no real shortcomings with this phone, apart from
its age, so if you're looking for a bargain, this could be a good
buy (if you can still find it in the shops!)
Features of the Nokia 6230i include:
- Active TFT display with 65k colours, 208 x 208
pixels
- 1.3 megapixel digital camera (image size 1280
x 1024 pixels)
- Video recorder with sound (up to 1 hour recording,
format: 3GPP QCIF)
- Video player & music player (MP3, AAC, MPEG4)
- Voice memo recorder ( up to 1 hour)
- MP3 polyphonic ringtones & alerts
- Integrated FM stereo radio
- 5-way navigation key with configurable soft
keys
- Animated 3D menu graphics
- Speed dialling, voice dialling, voice commands
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Caller identification with image
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, email
(SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4), instant messaging
- Predictive text
- Push to Talk (PTT)
- Games: 3D Golf and Street Racer, plus Backgammon
- Downloadable Java games
- XHTML web browser
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, Infra-Red
- GPRS class 10, HSCSD,
EDGE (speed up to 236.8 Kbit/s)
- Memory: 32 Mbytes internal memory plus MMC card
(up to 512 Mbytes)
- Mobile Wallet 2.0
- Vibration alert
- Triband
- Size: 103 x 44 x 20 mm
- Weight: 99g
- Talktime: 3 - 5 hours
- Battery standby: 150 - 300 hours

I just got this phone and its really handy. I've been changing phones
every summer for the past 6 years and my last phone was Moto V300
which was a horrible phone with horrible sound, but a great outlook.
This Nokia, however, is amazing. It is very simple with a lot of
features in. The battery life is great, working as an agent and
being on the phone all the time it is very practical and handy.
I love the camera and multimedia is great. Putting your favourite
song as a ringtone is always nice! I particularly like the fact
that the sms storage is huge. This phone is a very noticable improvement
for Nokia. It doesn't really differ from 6230 though. But then again...That
phone is really something too!

Great phone! Deserves 5 stars but I'm not giving it yet! The screen
is bigger than the K700i but it has grainy display. Stick a screen
protector on it and the k700i then you'll see the problem! It has
demo video that made it look and sound a lot worse! Playing it makes
you look around in case someone will tell you that your phone has
a problem. Key pad looks and works great. Speakers are loud and
clear but the included poor ring tones didn't bring the best out
of them. Hands-free feature is a bonus. The shape is very dated
and has better go up market. The optional casing colour are even
worse. Wondered why they bother packaging them? Someone's sleeping
in the design section. Nokia has a screen problem that needs serious
help for a very long time. It's so sad that even the brain-dead
would instead buy a K700i with a over-sensitive joystock problem!

It's a phone that do not seem to be short of good reviews so I'm
gong to be brief. Works really great as one of the best get-about
phones ever made. Though better than the N6230, its screen can't
seem to bring out the higher resolution built into it. Nokia better
get their development people together to work the screens of their
full-features get-about phones such as the N6230i or Sony is going
to leave them standing behind in the dust. What's worst is that
it comes with an extremely blotchy promotional video that makes
you squirm while viewing as someone may just lean over your shoulder
& chirp "hey, that's a really blotchy handphone screen that you've
got!". The handphone is definitely a superb lightweight charm of
a handphone and deserves a much better screen. One can't help but
get a feeling like when a mechanic had expertly tuned up your car
but left his greasy finger prints all over the bonnet. Sony is just
waiting "at the next bend" with their K750 and W800. So wake up
, Nokia!!!

This phone is basically an excellent phone and has a lot of great
features, but nothing Nokia have made is perfect and this phone
is no exception. The biggest grumble for me is the appaling battery
life. If you play around with the features such as the camera, video
recorder and MP3 player, the battery will die on you in a day, and
if you mearly use it for calls and texting, it'll still be dead
in two days. One of the negative points I have about the MP3 player
is the fact you can't add or remove songs from the playlist on the
phone itself. This has to be done on a PC. Another poor point is
that while the camera is excellent for a mobile, let alone one this
size, I have seen better quality video recording on phones much
older than this. I've also had a few occations when the phone has
"crashed", usually while in the middle of making a text message,
to the point where only removing the battery will turn it off. There
are a few very, very minor niggles I have too such as no "Delete
all messages" option on the text messaging options (You have to
delete the folders one by one) and no "Over right old messages"
option either, which means a lot more tiresome manual message deleting.
However. Putting these points aside, I love the fact it has an MP3
player, the screen is amazingly sharp, as good as a mini PC monitor,
you can use removable data storage in it, which for me is a real
bonus as I like to move around files that I can use on a portable
device, it (so far) has been able to display any web page I've been
to since it has XHTML, the internal speaker is excellent quality
considering the size, Nokia have finally got the polyphonic ringtones
sounding nice. (Anyone with an earlier polyphonic model such as
the 7210, 7250 will know what I mean). And on a silly note, you
can finally put seconds into the countdown timer, not just minutes
and hours.. :-P

See my post from 11 June 2005. My phone is back after a firmware
upgrade - problem with ascending ring and message tones which I
couldnt hear - missing calls and messages. New firmware version
3.30 (key in *#0000# to see your version - those are zeros by the
way)has almost cured the problem. The tones still ascend but start
off much louder than before so I'm not missing calls now. I've used
the camera a lot since my last post. Pics are very grainy but acceptable.
I think the 6230 was a better quality phone - 5 stars. The 6230i
COULD have been better with a little more care from Nokia - so just
4 stars.

A likeable little phone that despite some problems one becomes quickly
attached to. However for an ex-6310i user build quality is ... well
... just mediocre, and battery life ... nothing short of atrocious
(I have to re-charge the phone daily). Things like the radio and
the camera are, of course, a nonsense put there for the kids - but,
hey, they work quite well and are bringing out the kid in me. In
a few years they might actually be worth having! The keys, including
the 5-way navigation key (rather crudely modified from the awful
design on the 6230) are surprisingly, even pleasantly, easy to use
once one gets the knack of using them. The screen is excellent for
a phone so compact and light. It's a pity the ringtones switch (of
their own accord) to "ascending" after even a single voice dial,
but at least that particular bug is reasonably predictable - these
days Nokia prefer to talk about "precision" rather than offer it
to their customers. But do you know ... they may have a winner with
this little phone and in five years or so, given a lot of luck and
a following wind, they may regain their reputation as the premier
manufacturer of mobile phones.

This is a superb little phone. I recently upgraded to a Motorola
V635 which is good, but when you've been used to Nokia menus for
years the Moto method gets on your nerves after a while. Not happy
with that, I looked around to see what Nokia could offer. I thought
about a smart phone such as the 6680, but after having had a 6600
for a while I decided that I wanted something faster and simpler
this time, but still with all the latest features. I then realised
that the answer was there all the time in the shape of the 6230i.
It has it all... fast, easy to use menus, great high res colour
screen, 1.3Mp camera, video camera, expandable memory, bluetooth,
infrared, GPRS, MP3 player, email, web browser, sensible and nice
to use (even for big fingers) keypad design and all in very small,
light and attractive package. It also has unlimited voice memos,
to-do list, memo pad, calendar and many other useful features. Another
plus point is that phonebook can contain different phone numbers,
email addresses and a postal address for each contact. I can now
leave my Palm PDA at home. The signal strength is up to Nokia's
usual excellent standard and the sound both through the supplied
earphones and the loudspeaker is very good. All in all this is a
good value, feature packed phone, and having just spent £200 on
it sim free I can highly recommend it. Let's hope Nokia concentrate
more on what they do so well... making good quality, sensible and
reliable phones like this rather than some of the more wacky designs
they have come up with recently. Five stars!

it has best value for money. With a 1.3 mega-pixel camera, 64MB
memory (upgradable to 512MB), 35 mins video capture with sound (depends
on free memory - mine was 54MB free), Stereo FM radio (best feature
of the phone may be when heard over head-set), Bluetooth, EDGE (TV
clips), internet (MMS, Email, HTML browser), 208X208 pixel 65K TFT
screen ... it is the best buy now. It has everything which a phone
can have :-) Ring tone sound is a bit low though .. And when u take
a photo .. the picture appears to be taken at night (a little bit
shading/darkening - which didnt happen in 6230). Contacts cannot
hold multiple numbers under one name (which my C100 cud). Camera
shutter makes a BIG noise while taking the still photo. During Video
capture the distant sounds were crystal clear during playback, but
the nearby sounds were a bit distorted. Still best in the market

Had a 6230 and upgraded 2 weeks ago - just for the better 1.3 Mp
camera. I used the old 6230 a lot at work for sending texts via
infra red on my laptop with Nokia PC Suite. I loaded new Nokia PC
Suite software which came with 6230i. New software wiped all my
old messages, contacts, pics - everything - without even asking.
The new software is rubbish compared to the older version - it cant
read the sim card on my 6230i (it could on the old version with
my 6230)so Ive had to copy all the contacts to the phone memory
in order to see them with the laptop. Then set my phone to 'read
phone memory only' when looking at contacts - otherwise I'd see
all contacts on list twice. BUT MAJOR ISSUE is ring tone and message
tone volumes - no matter what I do, it defaults to 'ascending' -
starts off ringing at really low volume and slowly increases - but
by the time its loud enough to hear Ive missed the call - same with
message tone. Firmware fault Id say. I already have a small Epsilon
1.3Mp camera which takes pretty good pics. The 6230i 1.3Mp camera
isnt near as good - grainy pics in low light, but reasonable in
normal daylight - video is higher resolution than the 6230 - double
I think. Pics will be good enough for work purposes but not for
social use - you know - birthdays etc. Best feature on both 6230
and 6230i is the mp3 player - I have a 500Mb memory card with my
current fav 100 mp3s - music which I play 'random' via Nokia stereo
ear phones - great sound and no need to carry an MP3 player + a
phone - in fact most low capacity dedicated mp3 players, 256 and
500Mb capacity can cost anything from £50 to £60 or more - why spend
the money when you can use the phone? Ive had to return the new
6230i to Vodafone for 'repair' - I hope a firmware upgrade will
sort it out - if so, Ill give it 5 stars in my next review - Ill
keep you posted.

My previous phone was Nokia 6100. After it had served me more than
2 years, I thought that it was time to move on to a more up-to-date
one. So I bought N6230i about a month ago. Overall, I was satisfied
with my new phone but there are several annoying issues waiting
to be settled. 1. Fonts in Text Messages, MMS, and Notes As in N6100,
you can change the font size you like to use when writing message.
Three options are available: a. extra small; up to 6 rows of text
can be displayed b. medium; up to 5 rows of text can be displayed
c. large; up to 4 rows of text can be displayed As you can see,
you can no longer write up to 8 rows of text like you do in N6100.
This new "extra small" fonts are actually the small-medium fonts
that appear in the 6100 help text. The really small fonts found
in N6100 DO exist in 6230i (displayed at writing mode indicator.
You know, the "Abc" letter that appear at the top left of the screen
when you write text message). Maybe it's just me, but I see a verbal
mistake here. Well, I can get over the cut of number of text lines,
but here's another funny thing: You can't change the font size in
Notes. 2. You must delete delivery reports individually. One by
one. You can't delete all reports at once. At this point I begin
to suspect if there has been an unsolved software problem when Nokia
released N6230i. I hope they'll provide the right solution in the
near future. Still, the rest features of the phone are great.

with it. I've transferred all my appointments, reminders and contacts
from my palm via outlook without difficulty. I'm looking forward
to upgrading the Memory card though as the "free" one is only 32Mb
The only real criticisms are 1.The phone doesn't come with a lead
to connect to my PC. This is annoying but not a problem as until
I buy a lead I'll be borrowing my son's bluetooth dongle. 2. The
Nokia Suite can only be used with Windows XP and 2000. I think it
should have supported 98 as well and maybe NT.

This phone brings shame to the reputation that the normal 6230 Business
phone had set. If you're gonna give this phone better ringtones
and camera you might as well make it a fun phone with a larger screen.
But obviously Nokia wanted to make this another business phone and
so named it 6230i. Did they even contemplate what business people
would need-better battery life and faster firmware. A 1.3 megapixel
camera on a business phone would be a waste(a VGA camera would be
more than sufficient). Come on Nokia, don't ruin your business class
reputation. this phone is obviously aimed at the wrong audience.

This phone rocks! Very easy and rewarding to use, particularly the
camera, music player and radio (preferably with a 512MB MMC). Will
not rival a digital camera with a decent aperture, but with good
light the images are quite crisp. There are better Nokia phones
in terms of absolute flexibility and features, namely the new Series
60 models, but these are considerably bulkier and more expensive.
Gram for gram, the 6230i is currently the best Nokia on the market.
