Nokia 6131
Review

The
Nokia 6131 is a bit of a mixed bag. It does some things very well
and others very badly. Let's start with appearances. It's
a neat clamshell phone with a one-hand push-to-open operation -
cool but gimmicky. The finish of the phone is beautiful with a soft
touch paint coating. There's a nice large keypad with clearly separated
keys and an easy-to-use 5 way navigational button. The overall appearance
is of sleek and simple elegance. However, if you read the user reviews
below, you will see that the 6131 doesn't age well. It might look
great when you take it out of the box, but unless you keep it in
its box, it will quickly degrade, becoming scratched, cracked and
otherwise battered within a few months. Not a durable phone.
Open up the phone (enjoying the cool opening mechanism)
and you'll get a real surprise - the main internal display has a
staggering 16 million colours and an ultra-high resolution of 320
x 240 pixels. This is a fantastic screen, but the mystery is why
Nokia have put it in the 6131 which is not a 3G phone and doesn't
have an outstanding camera either. Still, it's nice to use and contributes
to the overall ergonomic experience. Mentioning the camera, this
is rather poor, with no flash and with mediocre picture quality.
There's an MP3 player too, but it's tagged on as an afterthought,
with no support for playlists or any features that might make it
usable. On the positive side, there's an FM radio with a stereo
headset supplied.
Turning now to the needs of the business user,
the 6131 is reasonably well configured for a mid-range phone.
There's full email support, with support for attachments. Push to
Talk is available. All kinds of connectivity are supported - Bluetooth,
USB and IrDa. EDGE provides download speeds of up to 236.8 kbps.
Memory is adequate, with an expandable memory card of up to 2 Gbytes.
For the business user there's really
nothing missing, except for one thing - the battery life. Nokia
claim a battery life of 10 days. Get real! One day is more like
it. The battery life really is atrocious. Other things that concern
us are the reception quality and random shutting down or freezing,
which sometimes happens. If you're looking for a reliable workhorse
phone, look elsewhere.
The Nokia 6131 looks like a nice phone, but has
several serious drawbacks and doesn't really cut it as a camera
phone, a music-player phone, or as a business phone. It's a jack
of all trades, but master of none.
Features of the Nokia 6131 include:
- 1.3 megapixel camera with 8x
digital zoom
- Video playback
- Voice recorder

As I have readed the comments below, there are two absolutely different
point of views about this phone. One adores it, other very much
dislikes, but that's how it is... Now, my opinion. The internal
screen is surprisingly colourful, the buttons are easy to use. But,
women, be careful with the fragile internal screen. As it has very
thin layer of protective glass, try to avoid to damage it with earrings
or sharp nails! Overall, the phone is ok for those who use it as
it was mented to use - connecting people :)If you want to take pictures
or listen to music, buy camera or player...

Ok, lets start with the thing that everyone always critisises -
the battery. Yes, if you use the camera constantly, if you use the
Mp3 player all the time and leave the bluetooth on all day - the
battery is obviously going to run out quickly. If you want to take
pictures, buy a camera. If you want to listen to music buy a proper
Mp3 player. If you use this phone as a phone then the battery will
last you around 4 days. The phone itself is great, it's really easy
to use and everything is obvious to figure out. The buttons are
a great size which means you can text extremely easily. The screen
is amazing, and so colourful. If you want to take pictures in slightly
dimmed conditions turn the night mode on, and it will shoot good
quality pictures. So if you want a phone to be used for what a phone
should be used for - texting, calling etc - then this is a fantastic
phone. Simplicity pays off with this phone.

This is a quite comprehensively specified phone, but I find the
menus are very involved. I have asked Nokia to supply a menu tree
but they refuse to do so. Despite the phone's clever technology,
virtually everything about the phone is complicated. Apart from
calling and texting (which are themselves somewhat confusing) the
remaining goodies are unused, not because of antipathy, but because
of lack of knowledge about how to access these benefits. One thing
I did want was a speakerphone. There is virtually no reference to
this in the manual so I asked the Nokia helpdesk for assistance.
Their first answers just did not address my request, but eventually
they actually did explain how to get it. When I put their instructions
into practice, they didn't work. It took a 14 year old girl to fathom
for me the correct way to access the speakerphone. My point here
is that if everything about the phone is so involved, a menu tree
is absolutely essential. Nokias appear to have a reputation for
ease of use, and if this is an example, then I dread to think what
a hard to use one is like. This is a nice phone to handle, the screen
is fantastic, but the battery life is short. I can see I bought
the wrong phone, but that is my fault, but I have to ask, why is
everthing digital so fiendishly difficult to understand? I can only
rate the phone on how it is for me, and one star is all I am prepared
to give. Demystified however, the phone would probably warrant four
to five stars. Nokia take note!

I've had my phone for a while now, and I must say that its a very
good mobile. The phone I had before was an atrocity, so this was
a very pleasant change. I didn't like the fact that I had to go
out and buy a MicroSD chip, but their relatively inexpensive so
its ok. The camera is decent, in a good outside light it can take
nice pictures, which is something I value in a phone. I would have
like to see a better camera but what I have is really quite good
enough. The keys are very, very easy to use. I appreciate their
size as my fingers are rather large. The screen resolution and colors
are amazing, and the push-to-open button is my favorite feature.
Other than having to get a seperate memory card the only thing I
found wrong with the phone is the battery life. It lasts about a
day and a half, especially when I use it a lot and have the bluetooth
on all the time. I have to charge it everyday, just to make sure
that it stays on. Now it may not be a major problem for me, but
it ca n get annoying sometimes. Other than that, an excellent phone.
Highly reccommend for anyone looking for a good quality phone.

Looks nice to begin with, but simply does not stand the test of
time. There's not a single part of this phone that doesn't chip,
scratch, peel or otherwise gradually degrade. I've had this mobile
for 6 months and it looks like I've had it for 6 years. There's
a crack in the outer screen. The back hatch just slides off to expose
the battery with just a little bit of pressure. Now the phone doesn't
want to recharge anymore. Every now and then the phone just resets,
for no apparent reason. The point of clamshell is so that buttons
cannot be accidentally pushed when the phone is shut, so of course
some genius at nokia decided to put some extra buttons on the side
where you absolutely cannot fail to accidentally press them while
holding the phone, including the button to turn the camera on. No
connectivity cable comes with the phone, and of course it's non-standard
so you have to fork out for another expensive cable. Battery life
is poor. You'll probably like this phone at first, but it takes
a while to discover that it is actually quite lacking. Was pro-nokia
until I got this, now I'll try some other brand.

the camera was poor in comparison to the display offered, and the
casing began to pick up small marks, but I was nnetheless happy.
Its now Jan 2007 and the battery life is shot to pieces, it has
to be charged everyday, cuts out every 5 mins in phone conversation
(and surely thats the point of a mobile phone??) and needs a minute
to turn itself back on, and every time it is switched off the settings
revert to the original ones. Some good ideas here, but shoddily

a joy to use. You can customise it so much and the buttons are a
good size- no fiddly mis-dialling on speed dials anymore! For those
reviewers who have said the buttons on the side can be knocked in
your pocket, - THERE IS A KEY-LOCK, PEOPLE!! You can set it to come
on at any interval you wish - I have not had one problem with any
aspect of this phone. Quality is good - streets ahead of anything
I have seen by Moto's lot. Battery life is average -no problems
once you follow initial charging instructions. Camera is ok too
- the night mode works very well for low light conditions. Only
downside is memory - buy a micro SD card, or you will have no space
for music or pictures, - These can be picked up very cheaply though
on the net. All in all, an excellent, well thought out phone that
is a delight -you will not be disappointed.

My only grumble is the internal memory - not sure why they only
included 11mb when my old phone had 32mb, but when my 1gig SD arrives

As a long-time Nokia fan, I've waited for ages to find a worthy
replacement for my trusty old 6230i, and in this phone I think I've
found it. Sourced as a free upgrade from O2 (and therefore full
of their junk software) I first gave her a full charge, then immediately
re-set the firmware through the on-screen menus, to get it back
to how Nokia intended it to be. It's a great phone for anybody like
me who uses their digital camera for taking photos, and their iPod
for listening to tunes, but wants their phone to be primarily that.......a
phone!! I can only assume that these people who complain about battery
life and poor performance must be spending 3 hours a day recording
video, as I am getting around 4-5days usage per charge (approx 3hr
calls & 20txt per day)...no complaints. If you want a stylish-looking
flipper, with easy to use keys & menu function, then I don't think
you can go far wrong. Well done Nokia.

I gave it a 3 star bcuz the camera is not that clear. the picture
quality isn't fantastic, unlike the 6101, which is smaller in size
but with ni bluetooth. u have to lock the keypad or else whenever
u press the buttons on the side (like camera) it will start. The
thing i don't really like is that whenever i open it it unlocks
itself. Still the battery life isn't long, like every 3 days u have
to charge it. It's not complicated to use like the 6151. For those
who said the color quality isn't great, i say it's not true. I adore
the rubber-steel cover. It looks really expensive from the outside,
but the price is expensive for what u get. THe display is really
nice. The screen is bigger (the whole phone) that 6101.Buy it if

sound quality is poor and crackly, the reception is mediocre, it
has no memory card, takes this new charger that noone else has and
in terms of things going wrong - this phone gets top marks for that.
My first problem was that the thing just switched itself off and
then stopped working. The second was that it froze whilst sending
a text message and then decided it didn't want to get any signal,
anywhere, and never recovered. Then the final one I had switched
itself off again, never to return back to life. I am currently battling

I would say is that Nokia should leave the fold over phones to one

basic functions and power save settings on. Displays and camera

good for audio with good quality speakers for MP3 etc playback although
headset required for radio. Bad unit for transfering or playback

This is a great looking phone - the opening mechanism is cool if
a little gimmicky. I have only had this phone a couple of days but
I am very familiar with the Nokia standard and this seems like a
very user friendly handset. The buttons are great for people with
bigger fingers and they are clearly defined and quite large. It
seems to be at the moment phone buttons on the whole are getting
smaller and smaller which is no good for people like me who do a
lot of texting. My major concern is with the battery. When I received
the phone I charged it for a full 14 hours before even turning it
on. However, 14 hours later it was almost drained which is not a
good sign. I am putting it down to the fact that I used it a lot
yesterday as I was entering about 150 contact details and taking
a few pictures. I shall be interested to see how long it lasts with
normal use. Overall though I think this is a great phone and would
recommend it to others who want to use a phone as simply that -

The main display is awesome. Stunningly beautiful resolution for
a cellphone. Great for texting and mms messages. I find the construction
design simple yet attractive and nice to touch(maybe because of
the rubber). I'm not into music and I used the camera occasionally
so battery life can be stretched to 3-4 days without recharging.
The loudspeaker feature does the job well producing clear and crisp
sound. Browsing through different menus is fast and easy. Opening
of folders is almost instantaneous. Mobile internet is fast too.
Ofcourse, thanks to EDGE technology. I love it.

I have had this phone for two weeks now and feel I have become familiar
enough now to give a practical review. My previous phone was the
6230i and as I had started to carry it in my front pocket I wanted
a clamshell type phone so the screen would be protected. I like
everythig about this phone except for one thing. Its voicetag. It
is absolutely useless, especially if you are looking for a phone
that you can use handsfree with bluetooth while driving. Unlike
my 6230i, it automatically sets up the voice tags for your contact
numbers. You can not set them yourself. So what happens is you say
a name and it gives you a list to choose from to call. Well, thanks
Nokia but I already have a list to choose from. Is called my contact
list! What is this sense of having a voice tag when you still have
to look at a list on your phone! Half the time the name I say isn't
even brought up. This makes it useless. I gave my 6230i to my wife
and she loves it because when she is driving she can leave the phone
in her purse and make calls using the bluetooth wirless setup. Can't
be done with the 6131. Come on Nokia, give us an upgrade (or downgrade
you may say because the 6230i voicetag was perfect)for these phones
so I can keep the phone in my pocket and use bluetooth and voicetag
safely while driving. Then I will give it 5 stars.

is slimmer and lighter than the venerable Nokia 6101 yet it's fully
packed with all the features you need as a road warrior. Built around
the Series 40 V3 operating system, the Nokia 6131 includes a MP3/AAC/WMA
player with several equalizer presets, a great FM radio receiver
with included earphones with a fantastic surround stereo effect,
when you press the button it opens to show the user a fantastic
16.7 million colour screen that rivals the one of my notebook computer
in colour deepness and quality. The menus are fast, way faster than
the 6101's, the games load instantly and they feature 3D acceleration,
the built in camera does an ok job and maybe a flash wasn't included
because it's a very slim design around the section. The builtin
MicroSD/TransFlash slot has security so your files will have password
protection, it has bluetooth, infrarred and usb connectivity. Battery
gets drained fast because of the large screen and the camera button
needs to be locked up by software. Fantastic phone just arrived

2 stars, because of the features. It is a mystery to me, why Nokia
has implemented Outlook calendar synchronization in such a way that
only the meeting Subject-field is syncronized, but not the actual
content of the meeting invitation. As an example, if the content
includes phone conference passcodes, I should mark those to paper

stylish, and slightly lighter than my Motorolas. It doesnt have
any protruding aerial. Also, you can open the phone single handedly,
thanks to the discreet push button at the side of the hinge! The
main display and colours are fantastic! The 1.3MP camera is of better
quality than that of the Motorola V635 (also 1.3MP). The radio is
good, with great sound quality...as is the mp3 player. Ive found
the infrared very handy, as i can transfer mp3s and images between
my laptop and phone (there is a good download which you can get
off www.nokia.com, for your computer). However there isnt much memory
on the phone itself to store mp3s or high def pictures... but thats
what the microSD memory card is for. O2 didnt supply 1, so im buying
a 1GB (recommended) off the internet. Im using my 16MG memory card
at the moment from my last fone, which only has room for about 5
mp3s. The only bad point i can make concerns the battery life. Ive
found i need to charge mine up everyday. Suppose the high definition
display would account for that thou...and i have been using the

A fabulous phone! Looks good, feels good and works well. Have had
a Samsung E720 for the last year because Nokia just did not seem
able to produce a solid, down-to-earth clam-shell at the time...
But here is one! Has all you want in a modern, stylish phone - sounds
good, even on loudspeaker, a fantastic, bright, large screen and
a perfectly good camera (call me strange, but I use what's called
a "camera" to take pictures and videos!). Feels good to be back
with Nokia and their intuitive menus. Buy it - or even better, get
a free upgrade, like I always do (O2).

Nice phone but a bit heavy and the hinge doesnt seem very solid.
Display is really good though the fonts are a bit too small and
very difficult to read unless you hold it really close to you. Radio
and card slot are positive points but the megapixel camera is terrible
quality. A mixed bag...

It's absolutely fab! I orgininally upgraded to the Samsung D600
but found it hard to get on with. There are certain features i like
from nokia, such as automatically saving texts when sent, being
able to put a timer on profiles, and the general ease of using a
nokia phone. This one is great, the screen quality is fantastic
and it even makes little sounds when it flips open. It looks good
and feels robust. I can't put it down at the mo!!

RUBBISH! i got it home last month and it didnt even turn on! Definarly
one of nokia's bad productions. i strongly recomend the song ericsson
z520i. BRILLIANT, thats what i call a phone, but this one is awful.
Ringtones were blurred, graphics look bad, everything is just so
bad.
