Nokia
6120 Classic Review
Phone
rating:
In a nutshell: A classically designed 3G smartphone. It's
the lightest and most compact smartphone available, and probably
the easiest to use. Equipped with 3.5G for fast web browsing and
downloads, this phone is smart enough to do most things you could
ask of a phone. Available in black, white or pink.
Best buy: *Free*
from Three
(black).
The 6120 Classic is a classic-looking Nokia finished
with attractive chromed highlights (available in black, white and
pink). It's a slimline phone with a large screen, and an easy-to-use
keypad and 5-way navigation key. Like the very popular 6300,
it gives the impression of an old-fashioned Nokia (which is a good
thing) as if the company has learned some lessons and is getting
back to what it used to do so well - making great phones that do
just what you want.
However, looks can be deceiving, because this is
no bog-standard Nokia, but a 3G Symbian smartphone. In fact it's
the lightest and probably the most compact smartphone available,
and the most mainstream one too. The 6120 Classic is a high-spec
device, outstripping the Nokia N73 in
some respects. The first thing that we note when examining the phone
is the display. This is a very high quality display with an amazing
16 million colours and a very high resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.
However, this does mean that fonts are small, and anyone whose eyesight
isn't as good as it used to be may well struggle with this phone.
The camera is rated at 2 megapixels and is nothing special, but
the 6120 Classic does also support video calling. The 3G is a fast
(so-called 3.5G) HSDPA implementation, enabling download speeds
several times faster than normal 3G.
The 6120 Classic is equipped with a music player
that can handles all of the common formats - MP3, M4A, eAAC+, and
WMA - and there's a built-in FM radio too. Audio quality is good,
especially when using the Nokia Stereo Headset HS-47 supplied. With
an internal memory of 35 Mbytes, you can store half a dozen songs,
but the memory can be expanded to 2 Gbytes with a microSD
card, giving the phone the same capacity as an iPod Nano.
One new feature that appears in the 6120 is Text-to-speech.
This lets the phone read your text messages and emails out loud.
Could be handy if the fonts are too small to read!
As well as being 3G enabled, the 6120 Classic is
quadband, so you should be able to use it on any network anywhere
in the world. Connectivity is Bluetooth 2.0 and USB, but not infrared.
The battery life of the 6120 is below average, and you'll probably
need to recharge every couple of days, depending on usage.
The only problems that we can see with the 6120
Classic are the small font size and the below-average battery life.
Apart from these two issues, the 6120 Classic is a beautiful smartphone,
and a much more satisfying phone to use than most of the Nseries
phones. It's neat, it's smart and we like it!

When i first got this phone i was so suprised at how small and light
it was. The camera/vedeo recorder and battery life are also suprisingly
good. The download speeds on the web are outstanding and are comparable
to broadband speeds. When playing music out loud, the sound is very
good and can get very loud if you want it too. Typing numbers/texting
is also very satisfying, even though the keys are quite small. There
are only three bad points: it has no wifi (understandable considering
its low price and how slim it is compared with other 3G phones),
the phone case can become susceptible to fingerprints and markings
and the 'menu' and 'C' buttons are quite hard to press quickly as
they are on the very edge and you have to end up using a finger
nail instead of the tip of your finger. Overall this phone is 100%
worth the money, as it isn't a very expensive phone and the slightly
annoying points about this smartphone are heavily outweighed by
the good points.

Does what it says on the tin For such a small handset this phone
is packed with high quality features such as the screen quality
and ability to surf fairly flawlessly (for a phone) - I have tried
smartphones on orange years ago and they were poor with many O/S
issues and system faults, constantly locking. This 6120c was a pleasant
relief after previous smartphones and more recently a simple V3
Razor. The Razor was disapointing and on purchase 3 or so years
ago i was promised many features and apps (such as msn), would be
compatible but they werent. I wont buy Motorolla again and have
apart from the Orange smart phones i had been a pure Nokia user.
This unit is a valued tool: Its feature packed - cute but understated
in styling - lightweight - versatile and seems very reliable - I
had never heard of a Nokia 6120 and bought it second hand off a
friend for £30 odd when my V3 failed!! I didnt even know it was
a smartphone i just liked it becuase it weighed nothing... Best
money i spent in ages - i realise i have had a bargain with it but
have also seen them on Ebay from £70 - £30 aprox.... still well
worth the money.. I put in the memory card from the V3. If u want
a light phone that you forget is in your pocket; that is reliable
well thought out and user friendly, (In the vain of oldskool Nokia's),
with a decent net bandwidth and many useful features go for it -
Its a baby symbian - Blackberry it aint, and it dosent pretend to
be an i phone - as i said it does what it says on the tin - Its
a little tiny wolf in sheeps clothing - impressive kit!!

The hardware and software are both excellent, I am using a 4GB microSD
card that only cost £14 including delivery from Amazon, so you can
easily get as much memory space as an N95 if you want. The phone
is as powerful as your desktop computer was 10 years ago (369MHz,
64MB RAM) so it can run games and applications very fast. The only
thing stopping it from getting ***** is the battery life - with
3G switched on, my battery was lasting less than one day. Perhaps
battery technology is not really ready for 3G yet (so said Apple
vis-a-vis the iPhone).

Its the perfect first-time smartphone, whilst not losing anything
to disapoint the experienced smartphone users. The best summary
would be that it is a smaller version of the N95. Yes it gets hot,
but not as quickly as people suggest. I would say that you would
have to be on a call for about 30 mins before you start to really
notice the heat for it to bother you, then there is the invention
of the loudspeaker to keep the conversation going. The other suggested
problem is the battery. Yes it is below standard on a normal phone,
however it is about normal with other smartphones and is good enough
to last you a day of heavy usage, or a few days of light usage.
I personally have bought a bluetooth gps device and bought tomtom
navigator 6 to run on the mobile, which when also connected to my
hands-free kit on my car, makes the whole thing work exactly the
same as a built in sat nav, whilst at the same time stops me having
to carry a large sat nav unit round with me. I also take advantage
of the HSDPA (3.5g) connection and use my mobile as a modem for
my laptop on the go. Allowing me broadband access wherever I go.
I shant mention any other features as they have either already been
mentioned in the main review. Just one other thing. The mobile phone
market is a rapidly changing market, so whatever you do, DONT tie
yourself in to an 18 month contract with this phone. Especially
as its available on pay as you go for £80, therefore you could get
it on pay as you go, then get a much better sim-only contract for
a lower period

I was given this phone as a gift and have had it back to the store
twice already as it gets incredibly hot when you talk, even after
a few minutes. Apparently that's what you get with an LCD screen
on a slimline phone. Whatever, it's a big design fault which unbelievably
Nokia acknowledge and expect customers to just deal with. It's not
always convenient to have a headset or Bluetooth connected as Nokia
advises, do they actually quality assess these things before they
put them out?

An excellent phone, have been using it for a couple of months now.
Great features, internet that works on the go (enough to check your
mail, use google maps etc - and the google maps Mylocation feature),
hook it up to a laptop and its a speedy modem. even the open office
software has been useful to edit spreadsheets on the go. Music player
works great, even played through the speaker the sound is decent.
you will have to buy a micro sd card for it if you want to load
on more then the onboard 32mb. camera is good - has a flash, but
dont expect pro photos in the dark. in good light takes a decent
pic. excellent connectivity, works with my bluetooth headsets, voicedialling
and all. connects via a standard micro usb connection to PC's. is
light and looks great. screen and back can pick up fingerprints.
it does heat up when using it but its not a problem. my one issue
with it is battery life could be better - if you use it, recharge
every day. oh - and within the first couple of days, had to switch
for a new one (3 were helpful) as one of the nav keys stopped working.
no other probs.

Had this phone just a day or two, a contract upgrade, and already
I'm very happy with it. It's small and light, has a great screen
and is packed with features. I use my phone mainly for calls/texts
and email, and I travel abroad a lot. For this it's perfect - quadband,
with EDGE and 3G and HSDPA, it's great for web/data stuff. Seems
very nippy with no slow menus. And of course it has great Nokia
menus that seem to have *everything* covered - whether it was setting
it to automatically retrieve my email every half hour, or setting
default access points for java apps - whatever it is, it seems you
can mess with it. I did notice that it gets pretty warm around the
screen area once you've been talking for more than 5 minutes, but
it doesn't bother me particularly, it certainly wasn't uncomfortable.
You can always switch off 3g in the network settings and I've heard
that stops it from warming up(?). Battery life is not great, but
it's not diabolical either. Should go a couple of days per charge
with average use. Camera seems fine in daylight, not up to the best
sony ericsson etc (but this phone a ton more features than those)
but still useful if you just want to take a quick snap. The flash
is fairly worthless though. Overall, I'm very pleased with this
phone. I wanted the E51, which has better battery life, is slimmer
and has WIFI, and I thought this might be a duffer. But I was really
impressed with the feature set and the small size. If what really
bothers you is the mp3 player and camera or the looks (this is pretty
plain), and you dont care about EDGE or HSDPA or quadband etc, you
may as well get something else, because there are better multimedia
phones at this price. But if you want something with top notch connectivity
at at a good price, you can't beat this phone.

Yes the buttons are small but what can you expect when you buy a
small phone - cant have it all ways in life! Two issues with the
phone are firstly I agree it does get hot after a few minutes, much
more than any phone I've had in the past. The big problem however
is I am now on my 3rd 6120 in a month because of the speaker. I
have discobvered that when you put the phone on silent(using your
power on/off button) and then turn it back on to general the speaker
doesnt always like to work. When you recieve a call and answer the
caller cant hear you, when you make a call, their phone rings but
you actually dont hear it ringing on your phone. To resolve the
issue you need to turn the phone off and on again which in 2007
simply isnt acceptable. This phone has done the same and so Im heading
back to the 3 store this week.

it went again, when i got it back this time, i charged it all day,
switched it on, and within half an hour the battery died, so back
it went for a 3rd time, then the menu button stopped working, and
again it was packed away. This time, i got it back, opened the box,
picked the phone up, and the battery cover fell off the phone! And

Mother of God! What a pile of excrement. Got this as an upgrade
from the 6151 and it's awful. Keeps rebooting and asking me to insert
the sim card. Oh sure it does all sorts, and would probably drive
your car if you asked it to, but whats the point when it blocks
you making calls and fails to send texts?! The more pointless cack
they put on mobiles-Adobe Acrobat anyone?!-the more thats bound
to mess up. To hell with it. I'm going back to my 6151. I'd use
my 8210 but it weeps when I try to put in a 3 sim card. 6120? Balls!!

it gets very hot too! I droped mine in the bath, afta a day or two

I love this phone. This is only the 3rd phone I've really liked.
The 1st one being the 3315, very easy to use and basic. Then the
2112, once again very easy to use and just a basic CDMA, everything
I wanted just in a phone they both were. And now this 6120 is just
everything I wanted, an MP3 player, a decent camera, excellent screen,
even with a half-decent internal speaker, and best of all, still
very easy to use, though I'll admit occasionally I get lost with
all the features, good one Nokia!

This phone is fantastic. I got it yesterday after wating 2 months
and it was well worth the wait. It is the smallest and most compact
smart- phone and a beautiful phone with great features such as text-to-speech,
bluetooth, music player GPS and much more. The audio quality is
really clear and the picture is brilliant. The phone is small and
fits perfectly in my pocket. The camera is a lot beter than I expected
it to be. I was going to buy the samsung U700 but changed my mind
after reading the reviews and I think this phone is much better.
The only down side is that the earphones dont really fit in my ear
but the volume can go really loud on the phone so you dont really
need the earphones. I am really pleased with this phone its got
everything you need and more. If you are thinking of buying it dont
have any second thoughts it is GREAT. Im giving it a 5, well done
Nokia.

The navigation frame is useful even for my large fingers. Great
display with fonts I can only read using my reading glasses - it's
a small price to pay and it allows me the enjoy the great hirez

one does show finger marks easily), HSDPA (3.5G), some good 3rd

other 2mp phone cameras) especially indoors, short battery life,

- The good: Excellent display. Faster than most other S60 phones.
Talk time: Nokia says 3h, in real life it's close to 4h. Nokia says
it supports SD cards up to 2 GB. In real life, it also works with
4 GB cards. - The bad: Can't charge over USB port SD card cover
requires long fingernails. The black plastic is a fingerprint magnet.
The processor gets warm - The ugly: The camera takes blurry pictures
and is useless indoors and at night. You need to install cCam to
take pictures without the annoying shutter sound. cCam: www.symbian-freeware.com/download-ccam.html

Speedy, beautiful phone with a chock full of features and power.
But all of this comes at a price. This phone has a tendency to actually

you are not too keen on using a bluetooth headset all the while,
this may be a deal breaker.

Well overall i think this phone is great, its a brilliant size not
to big and chunky (like the sliding nokias) and not very heavy.
The design is simple but sleek with a good size screen. The radio
works really well and the headphones that come with it are really
light too. The camera and video recorder where suprisinly better
than i expected and the music player works very well. The only problems
i have found are: - The handset can get very hot if having a long
convosation on the phone - The buttons feel abit plastic and are
sometimes tricky to use but after a while u get used to it and its
fine - Depending on what you are doing the battery life is not that
long However these are quite minor things so overall well done nokia
a great phone!

The phone works well. I've had if for about 2 weeks now. Using it
as modem for the computer works fine, as well as going on the internet
on the phone itself. Battery life may be somewhat short but charge
it regularly and it wont be a problem (honestly, how much work is
it to plug a phone into a wall) then depending on what you use it
for, you can surf on it for at least a couple hours before the battery
is drained out, with the time depending on what you surf for example
if your watch you tube videos on it (which from by the way the quality
is fine). I'm perfectly content with it so far and have had no problems
with it that are worth noting. I give it a five.
