Nokia 6101
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Nokia 6101 is a compact camera phone with a clamshell design. By
Nokia's standards, it's very small, but it's still heavy compared
with similar clamshells from Samsung. Still, Nokia are definitely
making progress in the physical design of their clamshell phones,
and this is a very attractive phone. There are dual colour displays
and the keypad is thoughtfully laid out, with a 5-way navigation
key and a dedicated camera button. However the build quality is
rather poor and the phone feels cheap and scratches very easily.
The
camera is a standard VGA resolution, with the ability to take self-portraits
using the external display as a viewfinder. This is not a great
feature as the external display is so small - a rotating camera
would have been a better solution. The camera has a night mode,
but no flash. The camera also functions as a video recorder using
the 3GP format. Video quality is
quite poor. Nokia have partnered with Kodak to let you upload your
photos to the Kodak website and have them printed and sent to your
address. This is a service that you have to pay for, of course.
There
is also a voice recorder, and the phone has an FM stereo radio.
This works only when the supplied headset is plugged in, as the
headset wire is used as the FM aerial. MP3 tracks can be used as
ringtones, although there is no capability for listening to MP3's
otherwise.
The
memory is only 4.4 Mbytes which doesn't let you store many photos
or ringtones.
Overall
the 6101 is a reasonable mid-range camera phone. Although it's quite
expensive for what you get, it can just about hold its own with
the current range of mid-priced clamshells from Motorola and Samsung,
and is probably Nokia's most successful implementation of a flip-phone
yet. Before buying, just bear in mind that for the same kind of
money you could get a clamshell phone from Motorola or Samsung with
much better features.
Features of the Nokia 6101 include:
- Integrated VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with
self-portrait capability
- Video recorder with sound
- Internal display: 128 x 160 pixels (1.8 inches),
65,536 colours
- External display: 96 x 65 pixels, 4096 colours

- FM stereo radio with headset

EDGE, class 6: download speed up to 177.6
kbps, uplink speed up to 118.4 kbps
- Memory: 4.4 Mbytes

- Size: 85 x 45 x 24 mm
- Weight: 97g
- Talk time: 2 - 4 hours

had this phone for over 3 months and im really disappointed with
it - always had nokia's and when i saw they were bringing out a
clam phone i was really exited! I had read other reviews about the
lack of memory but had assumed that i wouldnt need that much so
i got it anyway - but after downloading one ringtone 19kb, three
pictures, one game, 19% of the available contact list and thats
it - im left with a full memory! i cant take any more pictures or
download anything - i called the nokia helpline and explained my
problem and i was told that it 'sounded about right' why have a
camera/video recorder if i can only store three pictures! so im
stuck with it until im allowed an upgrade in 9months 1 week and
2days!

Frankly speaking, this phone isn't really target for younger generations.
I bought this phone as a present for my mom at age about 70, and
she is very happy about it because: 1. It is easy to use. 2. The
ringtone is loud enough. 3. Display text is large enough; she doesn't
need to wear her eye-glasses to view them. We already knew that
it only supports little non-expandable memory, no bluetooth, but
still, with such built in media player this design is kind of stupid.
We are not complaining... but isn't the whole issue stupid? Just
imagine if Nokia can take off the media player function, perhaps
the price of the phone can be lowered a bit. Besides, it is SO HARD
to connect this phone via USB cable - blame me for getting so used
to bluetooth :>. I end up transferring all the ringtones and wallpapers
to 6101 through another mobile phone's infrared port. It is not
possible to synchronize contacts this way, but this is not an issue
for my mom.. she doesn't use the phone to store her contacts anyway.
Afterall, if you simply use it as a "phone" - not listening to MP3,
okay with low quality camera and display resolution, and not going
to transfer a lot of stuff (ringtones/themes) to the phones, it
is still okay to buy it. But with such limited features, this phone
is obviously over-priced!

I'v had this phone for about 6 months now, and I'm quite atisfied.
I don't really use the video function, due to the poor quality,
but the pictures come out quite fine. I'm one of those people who
don't need the latest ringtone or game or whatever, so the memory
is good too. I have about 12 pictures on it. The sound is good too,
I manage to wake up in the morning:) The only thing is that the
vibration function is a bit unstable. It sometimes continues vibrating
after I answer it! But it looks really elegant (I have the black
and silver one) despite the antenna, and I also love the keyboard.
Completely standard and easy to use, with nice, big keys. Good when
you're contemplating the need for new glasses :p

Why are some people complaining about no bluetooth and a small memory
on this phone. Surely you knew this when you bought it,. so dont
complain. Would be like buying a car with a small engine and complaining
about a lack of power. It's a decent phone that does exactly what
it says on the box !!

for the fact that the inside screen scratches on the keys when a
bit of presure's applied when the phone is in your pocket and that
kinda sucks coz its not cool owning a phone for one week and the

Nice little phone. Yes, the menu is the 'same old Nokia' menu, but
as with all Nokia's - a) it's simple and functional and b) it doesn't
crash. If you want a good basic clamshell phone without the problems
associated with other brands - then go for it. Yes, the keyboard
does feel a little cheap (the navigation keys in particular) but
then - a Nokia, at this price - what do you expect? I also acknowledge
the memory is limited, but then if you're not downloading ring-tones
and videos - does it matter? I bought this for my partner, she's
30 not 13 :)

Average phone. Naff looking with the body closed only reason i've
kept this phone for so long (on contract had it 4 months) is coz
its easy to text on. sometimes loading of messages and other stuff
is really slow. Also i've noticed other people say it scratches
easily. Mines seems to have been scratched while its been open on
the paint. Also camera not the best. But worst thing i can complain
about is she really c*ap memory! anytime i want something new, a
pic or ringtone i have to delete something yet even tho i have deleted
all the pre installed games!!! it still says i need more memory.
I have deleted most of the pre installed ringtones as well, couldnt
even hold the mp3 ringtone i downloaded and i only have 2 photos
on it! pathetic memory. Also its been having hissy fits with a blank
screen coming up on both internal and external screens so i took
the battery and sim card out and it was ok for a while then started
going off its head again whenever i opened the flip. Only reason
i've given it 3 stars is coz its nokia plus its no a bad looking
phone (apart from external antenna) and is easy to text on

it is a good phone. The signal strength is really good. The only
thing i didnt like is that, 1. it HAS voice commands but you have
to program them in yourself and then you cant even program everything.
2. It only comes with 4.4 MBs of memory (non-expandable) 3. When
i download ringtones they come out all loud and distorted 4. NO
BLUETOOTH!!!! Yes the infored is a good and unique touch and well
so is the radio, but they could have taken the radio out and put
more memory AND an MP3 player function (like the Motorola V710)
and would have made this the BEST phone you can get. I say yes get
this phone, its great, no bugs, awsome everything, yes yes get it.

the nokia phone company have made a complete mistake with this phone.
They shouldn't be allpwed to sell it. My family always said to me
that the phone was a bit to expensive. So i nagged and begged for
it. Then for my birthday i got it. I was so upset with the memory
the camera the video camera. I even dropped when i was texting because
the keys are sooooo slipery its unbeleivable. My parents couldn't
afford it unless they got it in a sale which they did and they wont
give a full refund for the phone they said we can give you almost
the full prise in vouchers for that shop or you can just simply
change it for a phone that full wack is the price we paid in the
sale. So i thought if i was to change it that phone would or could
be even worse although you cant get much worse then that. It was
the most dissapointing present i have ever received and i am appalled
at nokia for making such a rubbish, useless and dissapointing phone.
For kids or adults that the phone is so cool because it is flip
up and has all these features dont be falled. I was and i now am

picture when taking one. So please dont buy this phone all it does

background font color and idle screen colors is an awesome eddition
~ Also the ringer Id's not just caller groups was a brilliant move

good on this phone ~ As well as the reception, having the 850 picks
up nearly anywhere, in fact my daughter gets great reception on
this phone in areas she never got a strong signal before ~ Good
strong vibrate feature ~ Loud ringtones ~ DKU 5 data cable makes
installing your own games and ringtones a snap ~ Good memory space
too, daughter had like 20 pics on her phone the other day I had
to print out for her ~ Holds lots of extra ringtones as well as
many pre-installed ~ Voice recorder, video recorder, not being able
to zoom on the camers is a drawback though ~ Any questions I would

having wasted my money (in fact, no money, I managed to get it in
exchange of my Telefonica Movistar's renewal program points). When
I opened the box... I nearly drop the phone to the floor, 'cause
I opened it the wrong side, but I managed to catch it on the fly.
After this small issue, I began carefully to read the instructions
(First charge, first steps...) and swapping my GMS card from my
veteran Nokia 8310 to my recent acquisition. I switched it ON immediatly
and began to surf through the menus. All Nokia-style, so nothing
different, except for the memory folder navigation and themes stuff.
I must say it's a little bit slow. It's not SLOW, but a little bit
laggy when refreshing the screen, but it's barely noticeable. Not
really an issue. When I read people complaining about the low speed
of this mobile I asked myself if it was going to be worse than the
8310. Obviously NOT!. The 8310 is a real pain in the neck when dealing
with the messages list, or with any list greater than 10 items.
This one is faster. I only find it slow when typing SMS at lightspeed
or when surfing into the themes folder, because the preview thing
makes the surfing slow. But that's all. Its low capacity memory...
Okay 2'4 Megs it's nothing out of this world, but it's enough for
your photos and a few MP3-tones. You are not going to use a mobile
phone for playing MP3, are you? Or are you ready to waste your battery
in a couple of months? No zoom camera. Jesus! it's a mobile phone,
not a camera. It makes photos, but you are not supposed to get the
pulitzer with them. You can retouch your photos later in your comp.
You can even touch'em a little bit in the mobile phone. No bluetooth.
Okay, I knew. I've never had bluetooth, so, what makes the difference?
Just one real issue: The cover stains with your fingerprints very
easily. And you have to be wiping it constantly with a cloth. But
that's all. I love this phone. It's nothing out of this world, but
I love this cutie. :D

Its a really nice looking phone, and thats what usually makes me
bye them. But this one is really something you cant ignore, in the
baad way! Its memory is soooooo bad. I hardly take that many pics,
just of me and my friends, and sometimes some movies. Only, like
a few seconds worth. And it said that the memory was full after
only 5 pictures. 5! I dont really care that it doesnt have bluetooth,
I'm not really fussed about that stuff. But I like the idea where
you take the photo, and for once on a nokia phone, you can see what
your taking. It did seem a bit "flimsy", and for the price i paid,
i would probably say it wasn't worth it. Honestly, i would recomend
you dont buy this phone, it looks really nice, but actually buy
it if you will like it after a week. Ok, thats my oppinion anyway.

Good Deal! Stylist and hot chunck of hunk! Simplicity is the best.
The best user friendly phone because it's Nokia. It got all the
functionalities that I want - camera, radio, video recorder, voice
recorder, calendar, notepad etc. It's nothing fancy just the right
stuff. But don't buy it so I would be one of the few who have it
haha.

Had the phone for two weeks then took it back. The mini display
screen (LCD) on the outside of the phone cracked on the inside...even
tho' I hadn't dropped it, banged it or given it any reason at all
to break. The phone itself feels quite flimsy and not at all resilient.
Nokia almost get it right with this phone, I love the clamshell
design - but it needs to be alot sturdier. The only other negative
point was that it was often difficult to hear callers, even with
the volume turned up full whack. Actually using the phone was fine
- loved all the other features - with all the familiar Nokia menus
etc. If Nokia improve the case design, they would have a great phone.....as
it is tho' be prepared for yours to break sometime soon!

Not what i expected. The screen isnt nearly as good as those from
sonyericsson or samsung, camera is average, ringing volume isnt
loud enough, the external display cant be read very well in daylight
and cant be seen at all under direct light, memory is very small,
menu is outdated (still the same old nokia menu) and the graphics
are very poor. If u need a basic phone in nice clamshell design
than this is fine, otherwise look elsewhere.

Its ok .... It is not fantastic.Got it home unboxed it,played with
it for two days and then took it back and got a refund. Its menu
system is slow,no bluetooth and not much memory.I wouldn't recommend
buying it,it looks and feels cheap.I hoped for a lot more from nokia..Yes
it is better than nokia other attempts at clamshell phone's..but
its overpriced and a cheap plastic feel.Much better other phone's
around.I am a nokia fan(I text a lot)But this is a bit of a let
down.I will probally invest in 6230i..freinds have them and they
look and feel good.Dont pay big pounds if your are going to buy
one.You can get them fairly cheap if you look around and would really
like one..Its no a bad phone...But is not a good phone for the money
either.More memory and bluetooth may a have made it more attractive..and
a better build quality !

few sounds and you are out of memory. The from Tesco it is in a grey/off

like the other Nokis flip phones. Big display screen, easy to text.
Only major drawback for me was lack of memory - only had the phone
a day and already it is saying memory full and that's with 3 photo
images taken and 2 small videos stored. I going back to O2 to change

Have been desperate for this 6101 for many months, and finally bought
it yesterday. The reason I bought it was due to the fact I got the
Samsung E720 last week on contract, and like many people, have been
left dissapppinted by the speech clarity. All in all, the Samsung
is a far better looking phone than the Nokia 6101. Samsung's features
are far more superior, the screens, and camera quality is exceptional,
but like many have said, a phone is there to make and receive calls,
so whats the point. Regarding the 6101, it is a good looker in its
own way, small, compact and sexy however, BIGGEST problem, the software
seems too slow! This is the only hiccup I have yet found, otherwise
it is a a beaut.

Ok, so this is a big improvement from the horrible 7200 and the
halfway there 6170 & 7270 but it's come a little too late. Samsung
has already started to implement higher resolution screens, internal
antenna and bluetooth in all their mid-range phones (E530, E620).
This has an external antenna (??), screen is of high quality but
resolution is only 128x160, memory is only about 4.5mb, it doesnt
have mp3 player (only mp3 ringtones), camera is only vga and there's
no bluetooth (again!!). The only added bonus here is the radio and
for £200 that is not enough. For an extra £20 i can get the E720
with megapixel camera, bluetooth and 20x bigger memory!!
