Nokia 5610
XpressMusic Review
Phone
rating:
In a nutshell: This is one of the best all-round music phones
available. It has everything we want: a great music player, an FM
radio, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 3G, a memory expandable to 4 Gbytes,
and great ease-of-use. Build quality is the only issue to watch
out for.
Best buy: *Free*
with half-price line rental for 15 months from mobiles.co.uk
(Red); or £179.95 on Pay as you Go in red from the Carphone
Warehouse (Red).
Available in a choice of red or
blue, the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic is a slide design music phone that
upgrades the popular 5300 XpressMusic
phone. The 5610 looks like a slim version of the 5300 with a
high gloss black finish, but in fact it's a much more powerful device
in lots of ways.
The problem with the 5300 was that the screen broke
quite easily. Nokia seem to have fixed this by adding scratch protection
and aluminium side panels. So, even though the 5610 looks quite
plasticky (and does show fingerprints), it seems to be a more robust
phone, although some of our users have complained about broken 5610's
(see user reviews below.) It's not superslim, but is a nice size
and fits very comfortably in the hand. The display is a real treat:
not only is it capable of displaying 16.7 million colours, but it's
large (2.2 inches) and high-resolution (240x320 pixels). It sits
above a special music slider key that is used to switch control
mode (music player, radio or phone). This is a great idea, and makes
the 5610 very easy to control without having too many buttons to
press. Below the slider key is a good size navigation pad, that
once again is easy to use. The slide opens smoothly with a spring
mechanism to reveal a functional keypad with reasonable sized keys.
Overall the 5610 does seem to be a really nice product to use, and
beats most of Sony Ericsson's Walkman range for ease-of-use.
Let's consider the music playing features next,
as this is an XpressMusic phone after all. We think that Nokia's
latest range of XpressMusic phones can definitely match Sony Ericsson's
Walkman range. The 5610 doesn't disappoint us: it plays all the
main formats of music with full Digital Rights Management support;
it has good quality sound from the built-in loudspeaker, or even
better from the stereo headset included in the sales package; it
supports Bluetooth
stereo headsets; it has an equaliser and supports playlists
and album art; and it can take a microSD
memory card up to 4 Gbytes. That's most boxes ticked. You can
also plug in your own headphones via a 3.5mm socket adapter. We
would have liked to see more than 20 Mbytes of internal memory,
but that's our only complaint. As well as the music player, an FM
radio is included with support for RDS and Visual Radio, so you
can easily find out information about what you're listening to.
The camera on the 5610 is surprisingly good. It
has 3.2 megapixels, autofocus, smooth digital zoom, macro mode and
a dual LED flash. It may not beat the Nokia
N95 but it walks all over the Walkman range! Did we mention
that this is a 3G phone? There's a second camera for making video
calls too.
The 5610 does everything else that we'd expect
from a 3G music phone too. You can set your own music as ringtones;
you can record and send audio messages; you can use email with attachments,
you can surf the web at 3G speeds using the Opera Mini web browser,
you can play games, and you can connect via Bluetooth 2.0 or USB
2.0. Battery life is good enough, and it's a quadband phone as well
as 3G. It's worth noting too that the phone uses Nokia's latest
dedicated audio chip for enhanced sound.
Unusually for us, we can't find anything that we
really don't like about the 5610. In fact in many ways it's a lovely
phone to use. So why only 4 stars? Build quality is the only issue
that we can find. Treat your 5610 with care and you should be all
right!

I bought this phone today 29/04/08. I thought it would be great.
looking at some of the reviews i was very surprised not to read
how ANNOYING it is to connect the phone to a pc and transfer data.
It took me about 3 hours to do and i have still not got anything
new! Also i have to say that the worst thing about NOKIA is that
the phone does not automatically transfer onto the memory card it
goes into the phones memory and then you have to manually transfer
the recieved files yourself. With the sony phones they do it by
themselves. Also the themes on the phone are black and red and you
can only have black and red. The slide is very loose the phone is
light and plastic and the red on the sides scratched with my rings.
I had this phone for approx 5 hours and HATED it. It is going back
and i am going to try the samsung G600 intead. NOKIA need to think
of changing the way you recieve new data and also to re think the
instructions on how to transfer files from pc to phone!its the most
stressful and annoying thing i have tried to do in all phones i
have had and i have had a fair few.

screen...wonderful, clear, genuine colour pics, even better than
my 4mp samsung camera which i had to sell off to keep zis one, music
sound unbeatable, quick access to features with music slider and
standby menu, users shud know that the camera in front is meant
only for video calling, not for taking pics, and the zoom is only
digital not optical which means the pics are bound to be not clear
with digital zoom...the quality of the pics of the 5610 are just
WON-DER-FUL.... but i do agree wiz zome other negative views regarding
the battery....it does not stand long..i have to recharge it every
less than 24 hrs...also i got screen freezing twice ans had to remove
battery and replace back to remedy.. but no major problem....

As a previously frustrated owner of the far too buggy 5310 phone
I was a little apprehensive about buying this. I needn't have worried.
Everything superb with it so far. Excellent sound quality (what
you need from a music phone really !). Camera superb too. Screen
quality second to none. The only "quibbles" I would have with it
is the rather loose nature of the little control switch, and I have
a funny feeling it might not last as long as my contract. Also it
would have, in my opinion, made sense to have had the 3.5mm socket
for earphones. Minor issues of course. Still, a big improvement
on the 5310

The screen is a fingerpring magnet (but so are other phones), the
camera is a lot worse than my old SE K750, proven, side to side.
not to mention the video, that for some reason can only record for
21 seconds at the time??????? the screen is all dotty and the same
16mil. resolution on Nokia 6300 is much better! the phone is still
ringing loudly despite being put on silent! you have to change the
settings manually for it to shut up, but when you take the silent
off, it resets back to original nokia ringtone... And that's just
the tip of the iceberg!!! What can I say, it's going back!!!!! never
again will I use Nokia phone!!!!!!! :-( (and no, I'm not an ex-employee
grudging on nokia, I just received bad customer service and very
dissapointed both with the device and the company)

i have this new phone blue in colour, it's just too awesome. this
phone can be compared to the N81 in terms of sound quality and ease
of use. in terms of camera quality, it is even better than many
N series phone at an outstanding 3.2 megapixels. There are only
two sony-erricson walkman phones that have 3.0 megapixels and above
but they are much more expensive than the 5610. The 5610 is a good
replacement for both the 5300 and 5700 Xpress music phones. It is
also one of the best camera phones around that have outstanding
music playing abilities. By no doubt, this is Nokia's best S40 phone
which matches up to many of the N and E-series phones. this phone
is in fact very similar to the 6500 slide. the only thing is that
the slider could have been used for much more like in the apple
iphone. also when going from a menu to the music player via slider,
the menu or any application which was being run gets closed to accomodate
the music player. that bug can be fixed easily by a software update
i hope....

All of the must have features are very good quality, but there are
some problems with the phone. The sliding bar on the front of the
phone barely does anything - it only gets you to your music player/radio
quickly, but it could have done a lot more. The battery life gets
worse and worse as you use it (and I have been doing it properly).
Finally, the back cover is flimsy and if you damage a small part
of it, you've had it. Good phone apart from that, though.

Had my 5610 for a few days and thinkk its fantastic , really glad
i bought it ive been thru about 12 mobiles in the last 12 months
(impulsive fone buyer) this Nokia really does put them back in my
heart with the Sony Ericssons. Its LOUD when it rings !!! Its Screen
is clear and quality , the voice dialling on Nokias can now be educated
to match your own voice so rather than a 1/100 chance of it getting
a name right its a little better now and gets 2/3 more or less right
so good news for the drivers of our worlds !!! The phone is slim
enough smooth enough and the camera is very satisfactory although
Xenon is the way forward even with a dual led set up on the 5610
, it is probably the only phone that has the best bits of other
phones built into it with the camera, size, slider, volume and style
id recommend it definately.

I had it I started having problems. When I would read a text or
whatever the screen kept messing up and going off, then it gradually
got worse where the phone was on but the screen was just black.
Anyway my contract replaced it under warranty for a new handset

Have this phone for about some time and everything writen on this
site is true, I want just to add couple of remarks for 5610. Nokia
just made exellent phone, it's basicly nokia 6500 slide with music
enchance, but they could make the leds to be used like a flahlight.
I myself had a need to have a additional light but I have to use
phone's display for that. We already have those led's for taking
pictures, just need to make them lit longer. Under the displey 5610
has a two white led's that can warn you 'bout missed call or incoming
message but I think it could do more of it's job if it's plased
on the side of the phone, like on nokia 6300. 5610 has a very good
speaker and you can hear the voice of a caller very clearly, partlly
due the voice clarity function. Ringing speaker could be louder,
for it's better with acc files then with mp3. Display of the phone
is good but not bright like ones with SE phones or nokia 6300. If
you place them together with the same picture you can see that 5610
dispay is darker. Maybe it's because nokia wanted to make display
completly black when it is not in use. In that state you can not
tell how big the display acctually is. Slider is a bit on the loose
when phone is open but that is not something to worry about. Camera
is good, AF does the job. Lovely design. I recomend it.

I upgraded my Nokia 6300 to a Nokia 5610 (in blue) about 10 days
ago. So far I am very impressed with it. It seems to have all the
features of the more expensive 6500 slider phone. It looks great,
sounds great, and the slide mechanism glides back and forth well.
It is a full world phone, that is, quad-band, which is a feature
the 6300 did not have. The sound quality of the tiny speaker on
the back is really amazing, but it is positioned right underneath
the palm of my hand when I am holding the phone. I would prefer
to see two speakers (stereo), positioned on the side of the phone,
similar to the older 6270. The music player is fairly easy to operate,
although the special back and forth sliding toggle button seems
a bit stiff, and I'm not sure how strong it is. I have decided to
use it minimally, and access the music player via the 'go to' key.
I find SMSing very easy on the 5610, easier than on my former 6300,
in fact. I consider this a big plus point. Although the buttons
could still be a bit bigger, they are a good size and do respond
well when composing a message in a hurry. And I really appreciate
the fairly rather large font option that the phone has. The camera
is good, and the video, auto-focus, and flash features are most
welcome. One thing I noticed today that I wasn't pleased about is
that the #2 button on the keypad has started to get scratched from
the motion of opening and closing the top half. I feel this is too
bad, and I would add that I am a very careful user and keep the
handset in a case (by the way it was not provided unlike with the
6300), when not in use. Plus, I keep all the surfaces clean of dust
and particulate matter. Still, it is scratching with use. Another
thing is that the screen, although scratch-resistant, is a real
fingerprint magnet. A light matte finish would have been so much
more practical. And finally, although I like the look of this phone,
it would be nice to see it offered in lighter colours, and perhaps
in a flip version as well. It's dark appearance, colour schemes,
and themes might not appeal to everyone. Consider the Nokia 6070.
It's a very basic phone, but very nice to look at. All in all, the
Nokia 5610 is a great, full-featured phone worthy of serious consideration.
But perhaps wait a bit before buying it. The price currently seems
a bit on the high side. (February 2008) I give this phone 4/5 stars,
although I wish I could give it 5/5 instead.

Great Specification, looks and sounds wonderful but completely let
down by what must be poor quality components and quality control
during manufacturing. As a long term and usually happy Nokia user,
I upgraded to it from a long line of previous models but after 3
different faults (Bluetooh, Audio then the display) with 3 different
examples I had to give up. Wonderful idea but poorly executed and
certainly not something built to last.

I have the blue one, and i LOVE it, to say the least. It has EVERYTHING
i wanted my phone to have. I wanted a GOOD camera, and I must admit
I am impressed with the camera quality. The music is not over-the-top
brilliant, but its really awesome, both in terms of sound quality
and the loudness factor. The display is fantastic. The phone is
pretty sturdy, it has fallen twice in 20 days (sorry for that :)
but there is not a single scratch. The keypad is THE most thing
that made me not go for a Sony phone. In the range it is available,
I would say its a steal. You wont be disappointed. I love my phone.

Its a rubbish phone. Though, it looks stylish and i was happy i
bought the music phone with almost all the features. But after using
for few hours its volume key stopped working. I restart the phone
to make it work. Then every 24 hours it gets automatically re-started
after screen getting white (even while using any application). It
also hangs and u have to pull out the battery to restart. Nokia
has no intention for replacing it. Neither their customer care able
to tackle the problem. With an investmwent of Rs 13000 its not worth
going for. Its rubbish. Stay away.

This phone is just plain nasty. Once again Nokia have decided that
they know best and have made sure the 5610 follows in the footsteps
of the N95 and uses Meta tag info for any MP3's you upload to the
phone, so any 'compilation' folders of all your fave tunes you just
happen to have compiled get split into individual albums for each
artist in your own compilation, with the same being done with artists.
I uploaded 1 folder of music containing 45 rock tracks by various
artists, went to the music player, selected albums and was greeted
by 27 album folders (27 artists in my 1 compilation). You can access
your music in the original folders that you upload your music in
by going Gallery / Memory Card / (whatever you call your music folder)
but thats by the by. Nokia should stick to plain old phones and
leave the music side of the biz to Sony Ericcson, who i am promptly
returning to. And the Nokia PC Suite software totaly strangled my
pc, to the extent it took over 2 minutes to get onto Google. Nokia
= Teh Suck!

and this has to be the best. I had the N95 but it was really slow
and buggy so took it back and got this beauty instead. Better camera
than most of Sony's Walkman range (with the exception of the w960i),
great music capabilities and fantastic looks. Best of all its the
most reliable phone I have ever had, doesnt crash, comes on within
seconds, and battery life is brillaint. So if your looking for a

I think this is the best pound for feature phone available at the
moment. The 2.2inch 16Mcol screen is brilliant (large and clear
enough for decent browsing). S40 operating system is quick and stable
(don't need a smartphone),upgraded firmware to 4.81. Audio quality
is very good (just upgrade the earphones to really sample it). The
slide is smooth and the black/red finish although plasticky looks
quite sleek (but attracts fingerprints too easily). The real bonus
for a music phone is the 3.2mp camera WITH autofocus AND dual LED
flash. I had been looking a long time to upgrade my W810i and was
disappointed by every SE release since, when they split their range
into Cybershot and Walkman (deliberately crippling music and camera
functions respectively in each range). Nokia has come up with the
trump card over the SE Walkman range. This phone is a keeper.

After losing my W810i I decided on a change, something a bit different
and decided that this was the one for me. After a search of cyber
world the best deal for me was a PAYG from carphone warehouse on
o2.Went across on Boxing Day and purchased my new toy. Tried downloading
music to it and it wouldn't transfer. Thought I must be doing something
wrong so I'd have a look at the book properly. Still unable to put
music on it and then the volume control would not work aty all.
Took the thing back and the man agreed that it was broke. He got
a new one out of the back and that one would not even turn on,the
battery was fine. Onto the third one. That was fine for a couple
of days and then started to lose the network. Took it back today
for a refund. Will get a SE again when I find one I like. There
seems to be niggles with these phone judging from the reviews below.
Added to my experience it would appear the build quality is not
as it should be Shame really because I have always thought Nokia
were a decent make, maybe I have just been unlucky.

Been using this phone for a month now, glad to say it performs well
as a music player, 3.2 MP camera takes quite clear picture, video
playback quality is great, Symbian 40 rarely hangs, buttons easy
to press, though probably needs 2 hands to type SMS. The screen
is brilliant, and 2.2inch should be enough, even when browsing the
Net, with the Opera Mini loaded. Downside is the battery life, the
most it can last is 2.5 days with heavy texting, and moderate calls.
Good work, Nokia!
