In a nutshell: The 5530 is a cut-price touchscreen music
phone that is Nokia's answer to the LG Cookie and the Samsung Tocco
Lite. On Pay Monthly, it's hardly any more expensive than these
competitors, but it offers a whole lot more. As well as having the
highest resolution display in its class, it has a 3.2 megapixel
camera with a flash, an excellent video camera, a superb music player
plus an FM radio, 4GB of memory, WiFi, a 3.5mm headphone jack and
excellent battery life. Best buy:

Review:
August 2009.
The 3 most popular phones on this
website are currently (at the time of writing this review) the LG
Cookie, Samsung Tocco Lite
and the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.
What makes these phones so popular? They are all affordable touchscreen
phones. Judging by these facts, the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic looks
set to be a stonking success! The 5530 can be regarded as a stripped-down
version of the 5800. The 5530 is more compact, with a smaller screen,
no 3G, no Carl Zeiss optics in the camera, and costs about £50
less than the 5800. Alternatively, you can look at the 5530 as a
souped-up Cookie / Tocco Lite. The 5530 has a higher resolution
screen, a flash on the camera, WiFi, a 3.5mm audio jack, and costs
about £70 more than the Cookie or the Tocco Lite on Pay as
you Go. You can see that the 5530 is positioned right in the middle
ground, both in terms of features and price.
So much for comparisons with other phones, let's
take a good look at the 5530 in its own right. The first thing to
say is that Nokia's implementation of a touchscreen interface is
very good. You can use the 5530 either with your fingers, or with
the stylus provided. Either way, it's responsive and easy to use.
The display is a good size, at 2.9 inches, and has a phenomenally
high resolution of 640 x 320 pixels and 16 million colours, making
it easily the best screen in its class. And when you're talking
touchscreen, the quality of the screen really matters! The home
screen is customisable, giving one-touch access to Facebook, emails,
music, etc. The new Contacts Bar is also quite fun, letting you
put your 20 best friends & family on the home screen. We also
need to mention that the screen auto rotates when you turn the phone
on its side. In portrait mode you can enter numbers and text using
a virtual alphanumeric keypad with predictive text or regular text
input. In landscape mode, a full QWERTY keypad becomes available,
which is ideal for people like us who like to use punctuation in
their text messages! Watch the demo video below for more.
The phone forms part of Nokia's XpressMusic line-up,
so let's take a look at the audio next. It's impressive. Not only
is there a fully featured music player with support for all popular
music formats, plus an equaliser, but there's also an FM radio built
in. There are two speakers - one at the top and one at the bottom
(you can see the speaker grilles in the photo) - giving excellent
stereo widening and a 3D surround effect. A bass booster adds punch
to your music. Another bonus is the 3.5mm audio jack, meaning that
you can choose to use the headphones supplied or upgrade to any
high quality headphones that use a standard AV connection. We honestly
can't fault the music capabilities of this device.
The camera isn't quite as impressive, being a standard
3.2 megapixel offering, but it does have autofocus and a flash.
And, to its credit, it is extremely easy to use, making good use
of the touchscreen menus, and is very fast to record pictures too.
To be fair, it's more than adequate for taking photos to be uploaded
to Facebook, and even print quality images are possible. Video recording
is also available, and this is really surprisingly good. The video
camera records at resolutions all the way up to up to VGA (640 x
480 pixels) - despite the Nokia website claiming 176 x 220 pixels!
- and there are handy features such as video zoom, a video light
and the ability to pause recording and then continue, enabling you
to become a real movie director!
We're impressed by the connectivity too. As well
as Bluetooth and USB connections, the 5530 is one of the few phones
in its class that incorporates a WLAN connection. This goes some
way to make up for the lack of 3G. Indeed, if you can get a wireless
connection, then you'll experience faster data transfer speeds with
WiFi than with 3G.
The 5530 also impresses when it comes to memory.
With a generous 70 MB of built-in memory and a 4GB card supplied
as standard, you can store around 1,000 - 2,000 songs, and the microSD
memory card can be upgraded to 16GB for even more storage. Similarly,
the battery life is excellent, giving up to 27 hours of music playback
time. When you consider the size and weight of the device, this
is as much as anyone could hope for. It's also worth mentioning
that we found the 5530 to have exceptionally good reception, allowing
us to talk in locations that have completely defeated other phones
we've tested.
We're very impressed with the 5530 overall. It
offers a very good feature set for a mid-range phone, and everything
works smoothly. A better camera would have been the icing on the
cake, but remember that this is being marketed as a music phone,
so we'd say that it fulfils its purpose very well indeed. At launch,
it's much better value on contract than on Pay as you Go, but we
anticipate that the PAYG price will fall later in the year. On contract,
there are some amazing deals around, making it hardly any more expensive
than the LG Cookie, and we'd say that it's definitely a better buy
than the Cookie.

because of the music player, it's exellent! also the internet browser

Not going to over do this review but wow, the Nokia 5530 is an amazing
bit of kit, considering it's much cheaper than many touch screen
phones out there. Just has everything i need to get me through the
day in one small and light package. As to be expected from Nokia
the 5530 is also very durable as my 5530 has survived drops, more
drops and even cross room throws from my son! It you want a very
capable but cheap touch screen you couldn't do much better than
the 5530. Rating:

Nov 2009
I have had my Nokia 5530 for just over 3 months now and feel better
able to pass judgement than the initial euphoric response I would
have given when first bought. Yes, it's good. Even Apple, who I
have been locked into since the very first Macs appeared in 1984,
could learn from it if they ever bring out an iphone nano to reflect
the more compact size. It does what it says on the tin and in daily,
constant, use it has so far withstood the test - most of the time.
There have been 'crashes', the odd freeze, particularly when accessing
the web, but nothing to justify being unacceptable. Just once have
I had to resort to a full hardware reset and reload everything from
scratch; then most personal data (contacts, calendar entries, bookmarks,
etc) could be restored from the backed up memory card except, frustratingly,
the actual personal settings. I now keep a text file, on the memory
card, summarising the whole procedure just in case it ever happens
again and I'm in the wilderness. All this I regularly backup onto
my Macs if ever the whole gadget should freak out completely or
get stolen, albeit with primitive file copying over the USB. So
first grudge is that the device is not 100% software compatible
with the Mac, unlike the PC where user friendly applications exist
for complete interaction with the phone. There is no 3-G and that
could probably be a deciding factor for some. Also the ability to
fully decode all email attachments, whether spreadsheet or document,
could deter some business types. The 3 Meg pixel camera is limiting
but acceptable for quick shots 'for the memory'. Whereas no professional
photographer would ever rely on their mobile - well not as of today,
but maybe in a few years time - I think with more of us wanting
to carry less in our pockets on our travels the mobile world may
as well satisfy the requirement a bit more adequately than this.
It would not cost them any more with the quality of lenses and mass
production of sensors now in place. Having said all that the big
surprise was the quality of the sound from the internal speakers,
especially with stereo widening on. That such quality comes from
so small a device really does pose the question as to why others
can't do it like Nokia, and not just in phones but in other small
portable audio devices. As a music device it lives up to the promise
and memory expansion is catered for by the micro SD. In the car
it performs both music and phone over bluetooth and works in parallel
with my ipod over a separate UMI. Oh, and finally, as a phone ?
Well, yes, again it performs according to the label on the box.
The touch screen is responsive, for a resistive device, though the
QWERTY usually demands use of the stylus unless you have the most
minute of fingers. Still, by and large, it's a joy to use and the
real advantage of any touch device over, what now seem as primitive,
traditional key pad systems. When I now see anyone with a keyboarded
Blackberry I think how quaint. The screen size is the minimum you
can get away with to keep the attractive compact format, but with
plenty of options for display and font enlargement it should not
deter. I am ploughing thru my 50s, don't wear glasses, and have
only experienced a little difficulty reading texts or web pages,
at normal size, very late at night after too much good wine. And
if your hearing is on the wane then crank up the volume on the Outdoor
settings. Keep up the good work, Nokia. Or bring on the iphone nano,
Steve Jobs. Bill. 4.5 stars. Rating reason. Nothing is ever perfect.
You always want something faster, more efficient, bug-free, cheaper,
higher spec'ed, different colour, style, etc even though the technology
is ever evolving. But I do feel that at this moment in time the
Nokia 5530 package, at this price, takes some beating. Rating:

I bought this phone a few days ago and I must say it's pretty impressive.
Something I always want from a phone is good loud speakers with
a bit of bass that you can actually hear. This phone certainly has
that. I wasn't jumping for joy at the camera quality but I knew
that before buying. This is purely a music phone and it delivers
in all music departments. The phone feels nice and solid in your
hand. One thing I must say is, that after a number of years producing
smart phones, I thought by now Nokia would have ironed out the random
restarts but unfortunately, this is not the case. The phone has
restarted randomly on 2 or 3 occasions since I first switched it
on. My older Nokia smart phones do exact same thing. Also the plastic
cover at the back is a little bit loose, but again, it wouldn't
be a Nokia without a dodgey back cover lol. I'm going to award 4
stars because of these little hiccups. On the plus side, I would
highly recommend this phone to anyone thinking of buying it as it
is excellent value for money. Rating:

This is my first touch screen phone, and my first truly multi-media
phone. I bought it on the 18month £10 a month 100 texts & 100 minutes
tariff on Virgin which includes as 4GB memory card, and it seems
to be outstanding value. Wi-fi is the really big feature with this
phone, as this is usually only available on the likes of Apple iphone
and Blackberry high-end phones costing three times the cost of the
5530. Browsing via wifi is really fast - playing youtube videos
straight away without the downloading lag I encounter on my PC.
The stereo sound is astonishing from the little speakers at the
top and bottom of the phone. BBC iplayer doesn't seem to worth though
which is a shame, as i fancied watching Eastenders on it!! The 5530
is compact enough to fit in your shirt pocket, but the screen large
enough to read without too much eye strain. The icons look very
pretty and I am gradually getting used to texting on a touch screen
phone. Music is great, and camera (with flash) and video are better
than most. Highly recommended. I'm not quite sure why people buy
an iphone over the 5530 apart from the 3G which would be handy -
fast always on internet connection - but not sure it would justify
£35 instead of £10 a month. Comparing with my friend's iphone, the
iphone is bigger and wont easily slip into my shirt pocket, iphone
has the same 3.2 MP camera but without flash, iphone only has mono
sound as opposed to stereo on 5530, iphone doesnt support flash
on web browsing and 5530 does, iphone doesnt support data transfer
through bluetooth and 5530 does, there doesn't seem to be a memory
card slot in iphone but there is on the 5530 (up to 16GB), iphone
doesn't have a radio feature and 5530 does, and you can't multi-task
on iphone and you can on 5530. Hope this helps. I've always found
Nokia phones very reliable and long-lasting, so assume this will
be much the same. Rating:

I was abit apprehensive about getting a full touchscreen phone again
after bad experiences in the past. But I'm really glad I took that
risk. This phone is amazing. It does everything you need on a phone
and is excellent value for £130. This phone is marketed on the Xpress
Music range and doesnt disapoint. Music quality is very loud and
clear, headphones or speaker. And the sales package includes a 4gb
memory card which is plenty of space to store alot music. The screen
is very responsive and bright and clear when displaying photos and
watching videos. The Wi-Fi function is great and always recieve
a strong signal. The physical build of this phone is very solid
although from the moment I got the phone out if the box the back
cover feels a bit loose and wobbly but you soon get used to this
and it is not a problem. The contacts bar is a great idea and works
perfectly displaying messages and calls from contacts. The search
function is brilliant, just type in a name or word and it will display
everything which is related throughout the phone, messages, photos,
emails or numbers. Another great inclusion is the help application
which helps the user work out or understand more about some of the
more complex and newer features. There is a number of different
text input methods to suit to everyones different needs and preferences,
theres a normal kepyad 1-9, a qwerty keypad and handwriting recognition.
I find the only negative about this phone is that the screen often
auto rotates when I dont want it to and is sometimes difficult to
get back to portrait view. This is only an annoyance because I dont
want to turn auto rotate off completely but dont want it to rotate
when Im trying to do someting. Overall I think that if you buy this

I was a bit uncertain about a touch screen at first, and about this
touch screen in particular as it seems to be more of a teen phone
(I'm 43). However, I took the plunge and am perfectly happy with
the handset. The music player is great, with or without headphones,
and I love the way you can up the bass to your preferred level.
The camera is ok; nothing fantastic but it works well enough and
I have a camera if I want fantastic shots. Texting is a doddle in
portrait or landscape, though I could do with the text on incoming
messages being a bit bigger. That's an age thing though...... Call
sound quality is fine indoors, but less good outside. Samsung are
the best in that department and I've never found a phone to beat
them. I love the way everything I need from the phone is available
directly on the home screen, and in all it's a very user-friendly
handset. My one proper gripe, which only applies to the initial
set up, is the way it retrieves blue-tooth messages and saves them
all as text messages. When you're sending over 120 contacts, dozens
of pics, and 100 tracks from an old phone this is unnecessarily
time-consuming. On my last phone I sent the entire contacts list

is on silent, which mine mostly is because I go to school, is very
week and only vibrates once. This, as I've said has me checking
it constantly and seeing "3 new messages" as I didn't feel them.
However this is no reason to downgrade it a star because it is a
superb phone overall. Rating:

Fantastic phone. I have been waiting for a phone like this to enter
the market for quite sometime now. I upgraded from a Nokia 3120,
can you believe that? I looked at quite a few different phones.
The iPhone is too expensive and doesn't have enough functionality
(or atleast any that is worth having), I can tell you this definately
beats the iPhone by miles. The Symbian OS is fantastic and there
are plenty of applications and games that are available. I've loaded
Tomb Raider underworld on to it, and what a boredom killer if you're
waiting for a bus! The sound quality is brilliant, better than an
iPod or a Sony walkman! The camera is OK in day light, better than
the iPhone, but as I don't use the camera, it doesn't bother me!
Very very good phone. Well done Nokia. Rating:

Love this phone, best I've ever had. I use downloaded games & apps,
web browser & the fantastic mp3 player constantly. Only prob I've
had is that the browser keeps disconnecting when using wifi. Sometimes
after quarter of an hour, sometimes just a couple of mins, even
with an excellent signal. Anyone know if there's a fix for this?
It is quite annoying, however the pros far outweigh the cons & I
won't be changing my phone anytime soon! =) Rating:

An excellent phone/mini computer/mp3 player and some really good
features - I love the touchscreen and the Wi-Fi access in particular
as well as the size of the phone being only slightly wider than
my 6300. However it does seem rather buggy and I'm hoping an update
to the software/firmware will eventually deal with them. I regularly
get the Internet browser falling over, but this seems to be on non-mobile
sites such as the full Facebook site, but restart the browser and
it's fine (perhaps they're a bit rich to handle??). I've had it
stop notifying me of new texts for no apparent reason, lock up after
a call so I couldn't hang up, new email flag remains even after
emails have been read or deleted, I sometimes find there is a delay
in getting the touchscreen to respond on answering a call - but
a restart of the phone sorts all of these out, however I don't really
want to restart the phone. A couple of other things that I miss
from the 6300 - the countdown timer has been omitted and it seems
you're limited to the number of times you can snooze the alarm before
you have to switch the alarm off (very annoying for a serial snoozer)
:-). Battery life is very good, better than the 6300, but nowhere
near the quoted values as usual. I still hanker for a battery life
like the 6310i days. Overall I think it's a great piece of kit,
and having the bugs fixed would make me rate it as outstanding. Rating:

I got this phone free on £15 a month from the carphone warehouse
on vodafone (does that count as advertising? screw it...), so i
wasn't expecting a huge amount and therefore my opnion is based
upon getting it free on a cheap tarriff. so far i have hugely impressed
with it. on other touch screen phones i have often found myself
struggling to press what i wanted, but the 5530 seems pretty easy,
even for a 6'1" guy. The built in speakers were better than i was
expexting, probably slightly better than my laptop's. also the huge
advantage of all nokias is their user friendliness, it just works
how you expect it to. i havent had a nokia for a few years and i
haven't yet had any trouble using/finding any function i needed
yet. also unlike the iphone or other larger smartphones, the 5530
doesnt take up all of your jean pocket space, and doesnt feel like
youve got a small laptop in your pocket, and is easy to use one
handed. negatives: nothing major yet, sometimes takes a few seconds
to load something, and then you're not sure if you've pressed it,
so u press it again. obviously it then loads and youve accidently
pressed something else on the next screen. but honestly im being
so picky, it happens rarely and isnt a big annoyance. i do love
this phone, and if you can get it on the deal i got, get it for
sure! but would i spend £120 on a pay as you go? not so sure. but
for what i payed for it, it was the bargain of the century. Rating:

TOO GOOD SMARTPHONE, VERY CAPABLE AND AN IPHONE "KILLER". Hi, I
purchased the 5530 a few days back. Black/Red model. Used it vigorously
and let me assure you that it is a "fantastic device", a charm to
interact with AND definitely an IPhone KILLER! Besides having all
the bells & whistles (the specs. are available in every site, so
technicalities avoided here & speaking of ground realities) it's
a thriller phone, which is capable of doing everything that we need
/ look-for in today's mobile phones. It's thrills are in: a) Super-Slim
body, b) deadly user interface, c) great shooting capability (both
pics & vids), d) top-of-the-line music quality, e) No 3G (its's
a boon, it made the phone slimmer & most of us do not need 3G, WiFi
being enough) AND e) Amorous Price Tag. Dear IPhonites, my Nokia
5530 beats you guys all the way thru (I do own an IPhone and am
done with it). Why shell-out that dough? The 5530 is better (cheaper)
having all it's functions and upscaled! (16Gb card, 3.2Mp camera,
good stocked nokia music store that is cheaper than ITunes ...etc.
LAPTOP INTERFACE: A nice factor of the 5530 is it's ease at managing
thru the laptop. There is a cool USB Cable (in box) that connects
it with the laptop and thru the OVI Suite (DvD in box) I have downloaded
/ uploaded all the files (pics, vids, music, contacts, messages
and touched every part of the phone, arranged them, modified them
without any qualms at all. And the Vids shot looked good too, contrary
to what others say. Overall, I am deeply satisfied with this lovely
product. It's getting rave reviews too from my pals & colleagues.
And my wife adores it. What more do we need? So much so that I have
put-up my Black IPhone 2G 8 Gb for sale / Gift, rather than getting
the new 3G model. Mainly because I never needed 2G / 3G capability
during my 1 yr. of usage (Wi-Fi being enough) and I do not wish
to shell-out further (and huge) amount just to get more memory.
Note, IPhone doesn't have secondary storage capability (Micro SD
cards, like the 5530). And then IPhone's cam (2 Mp) is also well
beaten by 5530 (3.2 Mp). PHOTOS: I say, "the 5530 cam is good enough".
The pics are absolutely stunning. Though low light is a bit wanting,
so does all camphones. And IPhone was poorer. The pics shot with
my 5530 were flawless even when blown-out in my 42" LCD TV. Thus,
I do not see the requirement of 5 MP & more cams in the other models.
Vids were good too, for a phone shot. Better than lots of other
smart / camphones. And then, for a dedicated movie shoot I do not
see the usage of a phone. We would rather use our camcorders, no?
I do so with my JVC HD-7 (another great FHD camcorder, whatever
the websites say, it beats all. -No, I am not dwelling on it here
further). END NOTE: I find the 5530 a wholesome package, fully loaded
smartphone, too good for its price tag. And well above the requirement
of any other present models, including the other Nokias. It is beyond
value-for-money. Actually, the Nokia pricing is a surprise, they
could have easily priced it higher. COMPARISONS: I have, as you
see above, compared the 5530 basically with the IPhone. As that
seemed to be the most "wanted phone" by everyone. I have also compared
the 5530 on ground with Nokia 5800 (which is good, but bulkier and
not as smart looking as the 5530). This phone [Nokia 5530] is "Classy".
And again compared it with similar models of LG, Samsung, HTC and
Palm, while doing my market research for an IPhone replacement.
I found all the others were "very similar" to the Nokia 5530, Albeit
at a "heftier price", which to my opinion, is a pure farce. If Nokia
could do it, sure can others. That prompted me to assert that the
other brands are "not selling right". Which is why, I definitely
advocate the Nokia 5530. It is the Best in the market. FINAL SAY:
Thus, my friends, I say, "Go for it... now", before the 5530 is
sold out of the market; or Nokia re-thinks on it, takes-it of the
shelf and brings-out a modified 5530 with another name (model no.)
& higher price tag. I HOPE THE ENTHUSIASTS GET MY POINT. ***HAPPY
5530ing, Friends*** Rating:

I bought the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic because I thought my Nokia 5800
was too chunky, and it seemed like the only difference was lack
of 3G and GPS (not a big deal for me). I was also lured by the updated
user interface: up to 20 contacts can be accessed very quickly on
the 5530, rather than the 4 contacts on the 5800. And strike me
down, Nokia have realized that a touch-screen phone without the
ability to "flick" through contacts etc (like on the 5800) is pretty
much pointless. But here comes the bitter pill that I feel Nokia
has pushed down my throat when I bought the 5530: this phone is
NOT supported by iSync and there is NO support for this device with
the Nokia Multimedia transfer application on my Mac - this works
perfectly on the Nokia 5800. So, basically Nokia is telling me,
if I want a better user interface I have to sacrifice compatibility
with my Mac. And if I want compatibility with my Mac I cannot have
a nice interface - what the **** is that all about??? I thought
BOTH devices are running the latest Symbian software for touch-screens???
So BOTH devices should have the same user experience and compatibility.
To be honest with you, I feel conned and taken for a ride. And because
I bought this phone at Carphone Warehouse on Pay As you Go I cannot
return it and get my money back. Of course, the 5530 is an excellent
phone, but I feel that Nokia have taken a cheap shot here. This
is why I have only given it 3 stars. [Editor's comment: The 5530
