The
Nokia 5500 Sport is a gadget-laden smartphone designed for outdoor
and sports use. It could have been a great phone, but design faults
have made the 5500 into a big disappointment.
The
5500 Sport is designed to be tough and hardwearing. It has a stainless
steel body for enhanced durability and resistance to shock, water,
and dust. We don't recommend taking it for a swim, but it should
be a lot more hardwearing than a typical mobile! However, there
is a design fault in the 5500 that leads to the writing wearing
off the keys and sometimes the whole keypad breaking off after several
months of use. This appears to be quite common (read the user reviews
below). So much for a hardwearing phone - it's actually one of the
least durable phones ever produced! Even when it doesn't peel off,
the keypad is hard work, being made of rubber, and a bit like pressing
dead meat.
If
the keypad doesn't peel off, then the 5500 is a great phone. The
phone has three separate modes - Phone, Music, or Sports - with
a special swap key to switch between modes. In Sports mode, the
phone monitors your exercise and displays training data, speed and
distance, steps taken, and calories burned. In Music mode, you can
listen to MP3 tracks or the FM radio. Sound quality is excellent,
and a Nokia
Sports Headset is included. The
radio has Visual Radio support, enabling you to find out which song
is playing, who sings it, and other artist information. There's
plenty of memory for storing MP3 tracks on the expandable microSD
memory card. The standard 5500 Sport comes with a 64
MB microSD card, whilst the Nokia
5500 Sport Music edition comes with a 512MB card.
The
phone has a really cool feature that works well: a 3D sensor that
responds to taps. In Music mode, you can tap the phone to control
MP3 playback. In Sports mode, tapping the phone gives you voice
feedback on sports tracking data. In Phone mode, a tap will read
out SMS messages, so you can listen to your texts while you exercise.
A Nokia Carrying Holder and Clip are included in the sales package.
In addition the 5500 Sport Music edition includes a Nokia Sports
Belt, Nokia Wrist Strap and a Nokia Mountain Bracket.
We
weren't expecting to like the 5500 Sport. Nokia's range of 5-series
Sport phones have always seemed to us to be contrived products of
Nokia's marketing department, rather than something that users would
actually want. When we heard that the latest 5-series was a smartphone
we had a bit of a laugh. Smartphones are heavy and unreliable, right?
Useless for outdoors! But we're happy to admit that we were wrong
about that. By adopting a Symbian platform for the 5500, Nokia have
been able to pack in a whole load of features that really are useful.
And it's the lightest, most compact Symbian phone around! How disappointing
then when the user reviews started flooding in, telling us that
their 5500 had literally fallen to pieces after a few month's use.
We've downgraded our rating from 4 stars to 2 stars as a result.

this could just be a fault with mine. Having said all this. the

Save yourself- DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE. I spent a long time choosing,
reading all reviews etc, & bought this phone for its all round features.
It is without doubt the worst phone I've ever owned & I've had many
phones since '96. I'm on my 3rd handset as Vodafone will only replace
like with like. The keypad is spongy & awful for texting. It peels
off after 1-2 months and charge socket is extremely fiddly, with
cheap rubber flap on the bottom. It is very slow to operate and
battery life is a joke. I'm a fairly heavy user but it regularly
runs out before the day is out. You have to delete msgs 1 by 1 so
I gave up trying ages ago. All 3 handsets also have a connection
problem so that in the middle of a (usuallly important) call you
get a noise similar to a fax machine & you have to end the call.
My 3rd handset's microphone died all together. There is no function
I could find to save contacts to sim card, only handset or mem card
so you have to transfer them all manually. Web browser is far to
slow to consider using. camera is v poor, worse than K750i, itself
now out dated. It doesn't deserve 1 star. You will want to smash
it after 2 days, so do yourself a favour & look elsewhere. I'm considering
going back to SE or Blackberry. Rating:

This model is utterly useless and I wish I never had chosen this
one when I was looking for a new phone. I've had two of these. Apart
from the keymat peeling off 3 times and getting replaced, the first
one suffered from extremely annoying squeals and noises often during
calls, and it randomly disconnected the calls every now and then.
They couldn't fix the problem, so the replaced the phone with another
one. The second one is even worse. The clock is on meth, it needs
to be set to the correct time twice a day and the automatic time
update via service provider doesn't do a thing. Also, the battery
lasts about 12h with only little use other than carrying it around.
It has been serviced 3 times already and still doesn't work and

Read all the reviews about the keypad peeling away, but went for
the phone anyway, as I just don't want a brick with mega pixel cameras,
or ultra slim trendy gadgets. This phone seemed to fit the bill,
especially with the Symbian OS, so that I have the option of installing
other software. The phone turned up and I wasn't disappointed. A
small phone, very solid feeling, and fairly heavy, giving it a "quality"
feel (my work 6021 Nokia looks good, but is very plastiky in comparison)
I have had the phone for two weeks now. I also purchased a 1gb micro
SD memory card for the phone for less than £8, and immediately i
have a good MP3 player as well. The Nokia headphones that come with
the phone though have pathetic sound quality, so I am using my earphones
from my previous Sony W800i which are far better. Battery life is
pretty good, as is the loadspeaker, and a very clear display. The
menu options are not necessarily that user friendly, and so take
some getting used to if you are a non-symbian Nokia user, but once
you have them sussed they are good. Another problem I have found
is that there is no option to schedule repeating alarms; something
which I use regularly to get my sleepy head off the pillow in the
mornings, and so I have to remember to set the alarm each night
- this has already made me miss my usual train in the morning a
couple of times ! Haven't had a chance to use any of the "Sport"
stuff yet, as I am a fair weather sports person, but it looks OK
in a gimmicky sort of way. I am also not a mobile phone "power"
user, who spends every moment of their day with it glued to their
ear or fingers, so I'm not the best person to comment on it's ruggedness.
So, generally very pleased with the phone, despite the couple of
small issues mentioned, and glad I wnet for it. Rating:

In general a good phone, the apps are easy to use and its a great
phone once you get used to the Symbian operating system. However
there are some downsides. After only 2 months of fairly normal use
the rubber keypad (which was always a bit tricky to use with big
fingers) lifts or bubbles off the keys exposing the internal workings.
It goes back into place when pressed down, but soon lifts again.
It doesn't affect performance but shows poor build design.I suggest
you should buy a silicon skin for it to avoid this problem. I wouldn't
suggest that this is not the most rugged of supposedly rugged phones.
But don't think it will survive long in cambodian dust and mud!
I have tested some of the apps on the phone, the radio and MP3 player
is excellent, motion sensor Groove Lab game is tops! So in general
a great phone, shame about the keypad issue Rating:

Bought this phone 3 weeks ago. Really find it light and small for
a smartphone. Used to have a 6680 before, but this 5500 definitely
is better. Mine is the grey model (5500d) The small screen, even
thought being small, is indeed very cute and has got a nice definition,
much better than the 6680. What`s amazing with this phone is that
it can do virtually everything. Who needs a Blackberry when you
got such a phone. (The main problem with mobile phones here in Mauritius
is that the service providers are not efficient. One big network
doesn`t even provide web browsing and delivery report for SMS. It`s
therefore surprising to find people here using EDGE or 3G phone
on a network that doesnt support it! The other network has poor
coverage even though its services offered are great.) I`m surprised
thought to hear about the keypad problems. I do find it very hard
and noisy, but at least I dont have to lock it every time. What
also disapointed me was the difficulty to plug in the earphones
or the USB cable. However the earphones are quite good and water
proof as well. Rating:

top quality found it hard at first probably due to the fact it has
so much you can do on it, its mind blowing and what you can do seems
endless i love my music and am trying to get fit so this little
baby is my personal trainer aswell as my compplete music system,
the screen is small but just download what you have on to pc it
saves on memeory and you can see the real quality it really has,
good to hold good to play with and just cant put it down, damn i
feel i have found a new best friend Rating:

Phone was fine for first 2 months, then as reported by others, rubber
keypad starts lifitng. This is not just a problem with the glue,
the whole rubber keypad stretches and cannot be glued back in place.
Have taken it to a Nokia service center & it is a common problem.
They will replace the front half of the phone, but unless they have
changed the design of it the same fault will reoccur- Am waiting
for spare part to come into stock. In the meantime, phone is unuseable.

Hopeless! It's ugly as sin, the screen is small and dull and after
3 months of keeping it in my pocket the keypad has no writing left
on it whatsoever. I have threw it at the wall yesterday due to my
bad temper and bad reception and it broke and shattered (THANK GOD)! Rating:

just had this phone for a couple of days and the features are not
bad...was kinda worried bout the camera the fact that it is 2mega
pic bt it takes good pics (though not as good as the Sony Ericsson
k750i which also has a 2mega pic camera or the N90 with its Carl
Ziess lense). The tapping option is a neat feature, u jst need to
tap the phone on the side to change the Mp3 tracks (an unique feature).
The key pad light also changes while using different modes. The
crazy thing is that this is a smart phone with a symbian S60 operating
system. Normaly the symbian phones r much bigger in size compared
to the nokia 5500 like the nokia N series and sony ericsson p910,
p990...The phone is dust proof and shock proof and water proof but
i hv never tried to prove any of this. The memory card is placed
underneath the battery, this feature is one of the down side of
the phone since if u want to take out the memory card then u have
to open up the battery and then take it out. The menue speed is
not bad compared to other nokia symbian phones (except for the nokia3230
which has a reeeeallllly slow menue). The charge last for a good
length of time. the connectivity is not bad though this is not a
3G phone..but what more do u want for this tiny phone! To sum up
this is a cool phone, its sexy and stylish its got a sporty look
and its good to hold. Key pad for writing SMS is also easy to use..this
phone is a must have if u r looking for somthing small with lots
of useful features. Rating:

The big screen is great but it is not very comfotable to hold during
a conversation. The two buttons above and to the right and left
of the joy stick are too hard to press without pressing the ones
below. It takes a while to work out the menus and how to go through
them but when you have it is easy to use Rating:

What a FANTASTIC piece of kit ! It has the Symbian operating system
without any of the usual associated slowness. The buttons have a
great "clicky" feel about them. Phone is small and very robust.
Nothing is going to damage this too easily. My battery life seems
spot on so far too. And the icing on the cake.... it talks !!! Yes,
with the Message Reader function you can have "Ellen" reading your
text messages out to you. An absolute belter of a phone !! Rating:
