In a nutshell: Nokia's answer to Sony Ericsson's Walkman
range, the 5300 is a slide design music phone that supports all
the main digital music formats and has a stereo FM radio too. A
memory card lets you store up to 1,500 songs. The 5300 also has
a camera, Bluetooth wireless connectivity (including support for
a Bluetooth stereo headset) and plenty of other features to keep
you entertained. A good mid-range music phone.
Review:
December 2006. Updated July 2009.
The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is a music player phone
in a slide design. It looks very much like a funky version of the
Nokia 6111. Let's hope that it's better
than that inside!
So, first impressions ... the 5300 has a nice compact
design that is good to hold. It's very slightly larger and heavier
than the 6111, but a little thinner. In our opinion it's the perfect
size phone! There are dedicated music keys on the outside (play,
pause, forward & rewind) and a camera key, so many of the phone's
functions can be accessed without opening the slide. The volume
keys on the side double up as zoom keys when the camera is in use.
Clearly some thought has gone into the user interface of the 5300,
and it works well. The display is outstandingly good. It's a high-resolution
QVGA display (320 x 240 pixels) with 262k colours, and it is large
(2 inches across). All good so far! The slide opens easily with
a spring mechanism to reveal the main keypad, which is nice to use
and a good size (although the top row of keys are placed rather
close to the slide). The 5-way navigation key is easy to use.
Obviously music is at the heart of the 5300 so
let's talk about that next. The 5300 has a high-quality stereo music
player that supports all the main digital audio formats: MP3, Midi,
AAC, AAC+, enhanced AAC+, and WMA. There is also a stereo FM radio.
The Nokia Stereo Headset HS-47 is included in the sales package
and you can plug in your own headphones via the new 2.5mm Nokia
AV connector which can accept regular-sized 3.5mm headphones via
an adaptor. There is also support for a stereo Bluetooth
headset (available separately). The audio quality is good, but
not quite up to the standard of the Sony Ericsson Walkman range.
A memory card is supplied in the sales package
(size varies) and the memory
can be expanded to 2 Gbytes (enough to store 1,500 songs).
As well as the music capabilities, the 5300 has
all the other functions that we have come to expect from a phone.
The built-in camera has a resolution of 1.3 megapixels, and there's
a video recording option too. There's no flash in the camera and
the picture quality is no better than average for phones in this
price range, but imaging is not really the purpose of this phone.
The phone supports voice commands and has a voice recorder too.
You can use the voice recorder to record a message and send it to
another phone using Nokia's Audio Messaging system. Internet access
is fast, using EDGE, and a basic web browser is supplied. Connectivity
options include Bluetooth, USB and infrared, and a CD is supplied
to let you manage files and transfer your music from PC to phone.
Battery life is average, and probably compares reasonably well with
an iPod when it comes to playing music.
The Nokia 5300 XpressMusic is one of the very first
phones in Nokia's new XpressMusic range, which is clearly intended
to rival Sony Ericsson's Walkman range of phones. It will appeal
to Nokia fans who might have been tempted to defect to Sony Ericsson.
The 5300 XpressMusic is in some ways quite different to the SE Walkman
range, but as a music phone it holds its own. We look forward to
more XpressMusic phones in the future. The Nokia
5200 is almost the same as the 5300 XpressMusic, with some features
missing, so you could consider it as an alternative if the budget
is tight. One thing to note is that quite a few users have reported
that their 5300 broke easily, and it does seem that there is not
much protection - for the screen especially. If you buy this phone,
make sure that you treat it carefully if you want it to last!
The 5300 is no longer in production. The latest
music phone from Nokia to hit the market is the Nokia
5530.
Features of the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic include:
1.3 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom
Video camera (176 x 144 pixels, 15 frames/s)
Display: TFT 262,144 colours, 320 x 240 pixels
(2 inches)
Stereo music player (MP3, Midi, AAC, AAC+, enhanced
AAC+, and WMA formats)
Stereo FM radio MP3 ringtones / video ringtones
/ 64-voice polyphonic ringtones
Messaging: SMS, MMS 1.2,
Instant Messaging, Audio Messaging (send a recording of your voice),
email
Integrated handsfree speaker
Voice recorder
Voice commands
Java games
Animated screensavers and wallpapers
Alarm clock, Reminders, Stopwatch, Countdown
timer, Calculator, Calendar, Notes

all of the features seem to be pretty cool so far. this is the first

Bought this phone just over 2 weeks ago and im extremely impressed
with it. It has all the connectivity you can imagine... bluetooth,
infrared, usb, grps... The music only tends to loose quality if
you have a low bit rate on the track and you must use good headphone...
the nokia supplied headphones are okay but not the best. It goes
to a very high volume and is an outstanding design. iv dropped it
a few times and nothing broke on mine... not a scratch on it concluding
i dropped it on concrete face down. but anyway.. no problems what

I currently have a Sony Ericsson K800,W810 and this Nokia 5300.The
K800 has the best display by far and the best cam(Obviously) but
I got the 5300 coz I thought it was cute. I was disapointed with
the camera and the MP3 quality of the 5300.However once I used the
3.5mm adopter and connected my W series Sony HPM 70 headphones,The
5300 kinda beats the Sony(Even tho I am a die hard SE Fan) The 5300
and Sony are same in terms of quality(mp3 sound) but the 5300 sounds
louder and slightly sharper. Still SE is an allrounder and will
always be my favourite,My advise.If u get this fone,also get a really
good pair of headphones coz the suplied hphones from Nokia suck

more louder and much clearer than SE W700i and with much more functions
for other aplications, too. When compared with head phones, SE is
bit better, but when i used head phones of the ipod it was same for

Good music phone, player is not tops but great. Sound is great if
you tweek the equalizer and use decent headphones (with the provided
adapter). 2 down sides, first a small one, is the battery, just
not used to phones NOT lasting a week without use (receive/make
calls). Second, keylock function is idiotic, either lock all buttons
including player (on the side) or not at all. Also unlocks automatically
if it accidently slides open but won't lock automatically when slid
back closed. That alone wastes the battery substantially. Almost
a perfect music phone. Rating:

I got this mobile phone as a xmas present. It has amazing features
and the camera is good as well. It has an outstanding display and
is a great music player as well. The sliding part is cool. I am
very pleased with this phone and it's worth its price!! Rating:

Dear All, My wife recently purchased this phone and I was not at
all happy with the output of Camera. In the Highest quality mode,
the pictures appear to be very unclear, was really dissatisfied.
Seemed like clicking a photo from Nokia 6610i! When I change the
Camera mode to Night Mode, the picture quality appears to be fine
but the camera response goes down the drain... I mean to click a
photo in Night mode the object u r clicking need to be really stable.
Another bad part is that this phone did not have the Car racing
game which is there on Nokia 3230. In fact it does not have any
interesting game :-(. Ok Now the good part... the Music player and
the Head phones are really good and out here in India they are giving
256 MB Micro SD card as well... so this part is really nice. Not
yet tested the radio... The sliding part is cool... Will get back
to you all with more updates. Until then take care and hope you
all get the best phone in the most resonable rates and dont get
cheated. Vinay Rating:

This phone i have had for 3 days so far its good,it has a 1.3mp
camera and a radio mp3 plus memory card slot. The things it lacks
on,it only has 5mb of built in memory,if its suppose to be a music
phone Nokia come on give it some memory E.G. 256mb or 512mb its
very large to for a slider and to add to that its battery life stinks, music
phone Nokia... it needs to have long battery life etc... i think
the WALKMAN range are better for all the bad points on the Nokia. Rating:

im getting this phone in 2 days and im excited.. the camera is 1.3
mega pixel which i think is pretty good considering its a MUSIC
phone.. to those people unhappy with it have you ever thought that
maybe it wasnt designed for the camera quality it is mainly about
the music infact, its almost a bonus u get such a good music player
and reasonably good camera. i have the motorola v3 razr right now
[dont recomend buying EVER] and its much more of an upgrade.. also..
if people are so unhappy about its looks then why buy the phone?

Had it 2 days and had to replace it as the Radio didn't work, the
memory card wouldn't read and the bluetooth headphone (Nokia brand)
would not connect. Lets hope the replacement goes better.......
Also, I agree with the comment that the phone feels plasticy. I
just swapped from a SOny Ericcson and they do feel a lot more substantial
(dispite their smaller size). Nokia take note! Rating:

Have used this for a little over a week on T mobile PAYG and am
pleased with it, although the housing feels and looks a little plasticy.
Both web and wap browsers are included and it works fast on both.
The sound quality is marvellous and via the supplied headphone adaptor
it can be attached to various ‘walkman’ portable speakers.
The video quality is great, although the camera quality seems no
better than my previous VGA camera phone. Easy to set up to most
email services. Battery life is good. Easy to use. Over all an excellent
handset. Time will tell if there are any software glitches and how
tough the casing is. Rating:

this phone is not that good i only had it 4 a week and a half the
camera is rubbish in the dark and the videos are not good at all,
the music is really distorted, and the radio constantly cuts off,
i had to take the phone back because it was faulty n their was quite
a few faults with it, i advise people not to get the phone, i have
just got the samsung e900 which is miles better. Rating:

Cannot complain about this phone at all. Previously had Motorola's
and quite frankly would never go back to them. I cannot fault the
camera, so the review slating it I suggest you buy a digital camera!!!!
Sound quality is fantastic and the phone is very easy to use. Well
worth price on PAYG. Well done Nokia. Rating:
