In a nutshell: An entry-level music phone that does the
business for well under £100. The 5220 has an excellent music
player, a stereo FM radio and a 2 megapixel camera. Connectivity
is excellent, with Bluetooth, USB and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Memory
is limited, at 30MB, but is expandable to 2GB with a microSD memory
card. Best buy: On Pay as you Go from the Carphone
Warehouse (Red) at £59.95.
The 5220 is the entry-level phone
in Nokia's XpressMusic range of music phones.
Nokia say that the 5220 has a stylishly asymmetrical design that's
easy to hold. We think it looks a bit funny, but it's no big deal.
The point is that it's a cheap phone that makes
calls, sends texts, takes snapshots with a basic camera, plays music
and has an FM radio too. The music player is excellent, with support
for playlists and most popular digital music formats, including
MP3, MP4, AAC and WMA. The sound output from the speaker may be
a bit tinny, but the 5220 has a key advantage, which is that you
can plug in any standard headphones to its 3.5mm headphone jack,
and then you'll get top audio quality, courtesy of a dedicated audio
chip. You can also use a wireless
Bluetooth headset if you prefer.
The 5220 doesn't have a lot of memory for storing
music - just 30 Mbytes - which is enough for around 8 songs. But
you can add a microSD
memory card up to 2GB, which will give you enough storage for
around 500 songs.
It's a very lightweight and superslim phone too,
and we like it!
