Nokia 5130 XpressMusic Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: This is a cheap and cheerful phone from Nokia with an excellent range of features, for the price. Available in Red and Blue.
Best buy: On Pay as you Go for £29.79 from Dialaphone (Red) or £59.90 from Mobiles.co.uk.

Review: July 2009. Last Updated February 2010.

The 5130 seems at first glance to be an updated version of the 5310 XpressMusic phone. But wait ... maybe that should read downgraded. Although the 5130 is a newer phone, it's a less powerful one. First the size - there's no other way to put this, but the 5130 is fat. It's longer and wider too, and heavier. Just bigger all over. But for no obvious purpose, as the battery life is no better and the screen is the same size as the 5310, at 2 inches across. And the screen shows only 256,000 colours, instead of 2 million on the 5310. The memory card slot supports smaller card sizes too - restricted to 2 GB.

Everything else is the same as the older 5130, so what exactly is the point of this phone? Well, it's dirt cheap, and that's its key merit. You'll see from the user reviews below that the phone has a tendency to freeze. But for the price? Well, you could do a lot worse.

Features of the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic include:

  • 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
  • Video camera
  • Display: Active matrix LCD, 240 x 320 pixels, 256,000 colours, 2 inches
  • Music player (MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAC+, and WMA music files)
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Ringtones: Video ringtones, MP3 and MP4 tones, eAAC+ tones, AAC tones, WMA tones, 64-voice polyphonic MIDI, message alert tones, and alarm clock tones
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • Voice commands
  • Voice recorder
  • Messaging: SMS, MMS, email (SMTP, POP3 and IMAP 4) with attachments, Nokia Xpress audio messaging
  • Games: Downloadable Java applications
  • Animated screensavers, wallpaper, themes
  • Internet: Nokia Mobile Search, WAP 2.0, HSCSD, EDGE
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, modem, 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Memory: 30 Mbytes plus microSD card (up to 2 Gbytes)
  • Organiser: Alarm clock, calendar, to-do list, notes, calculator, stopwatch and countdown timer
  • Flight mode
  • Quadband
  • Size: 108 x 47 x 15 mm
  • Weight: 88g
  • Talktime: 6 hours
  • Battery standby: 288 hours
  • Music playback: up to 21 hours

Nokia 5130 is made for music. And i think that it thrives in that department. Its not that its the best in the market but it is the best one to get hold of for its price tag. No other branded mobile has similar abilities as the 5130 for its price. My first impression on this phone for its music wasn't satisfying as there was no bass at all. But i ate my own words when i switched the headphone provided with this handset with a better one. The bass was astounding. The sound clarity and loudness is comparable to ipod 4th generation music players. And i was even surprised when i got to know that the sound quality of 5130 is comparable to 5800(i compared my 5130 with my friend's 5800). So everyone should switch there headphones for a better one. Due to its 3.5mm audio output jack, one can connect it to any music system or home theatre system, thats awesome. This phone supports 16gb microsdhc cards, so no running out of space, whatsoever. This phone can easily replace one's ipod, thats guaranteed... My email address is Sbdevilmind@gmail.com. Any questions about this mobile, i can help.

I even connect to my multimedia speaker and i'm ready to go. Planning to upgrade to 5800. Hope it does not disappoint.

This phone is pretty good....for its price.I paid £50 for this phone and i think so far its performing well. The battery life is quite bad i'll say that at least. But other than that it's a good handset. The music player is great, and the sound quality through the headphones in actuallity is briliant,so far no problems texting or calling. It feels good in hand and the keys are easy to press and use.The camera is O.K for 2 megapixels(In all honesty i wasnt expecting much as it dosen't even support flash). All in all it is an entry level handset and i think some people are expecting to much from this phone, though it gets a thumbs up from me the poor battery life is a large let-down

@David from Indonesia: The battery life improves after about 3 - 5 full charge and full discharge cycles. I'm looking into getting the phone next week. I noticed that most guys complaining here bought their phones from telecom companies like Orange or Tmobile. Well for some reasons, mobile phones bought with/from networks present with a lot of problems. While in London 2 years ago, I bought a motorola V3r pay-as-you-go from Tmobile and it's battery kept discharging every 5 hours coupled with the fact that it kept losing signal every now and then even in places with excellent signal. I finally exchanged the phone and it worked okay throughout vacation until I got back to Nigeria and it started malfunctioning again. Poor signal, bad GPRS connection, sms failures etc. What I'm trying to say is that you all should buying "unbranded phones". Unbranded=Not Tmobile, orange, 3 or whatever. Just get the phone without it's been attached to any network and your worries might just be no more.

I've the latest firmware RM-495 and it works good but with a slight problem I can't download java applications over the air. After download when installing it says invalid app! However i can transfer the same apps via computer and they work fine. I've even tried 4 gb cast instead of supported 2 gb. It supports it but with a little more booting or should i say start using time and sluggish mp4 format (even music player hangs when try to play, however phone works fine but to listen music again you have to restart.) awaiting the patch to download and more memory support( don't you think it had to play mp4 when it's memory litterely not used?)

This phone is rubbish I got it 3 1/2 weeks ago and am already on my second one. I had to send the first back as it kept freezing within the first 2 days. i'll be returning this 1 too when talking on the phone, very often the other person cannot hear anything at all or visa versa. batery life so far is good but phone does not tell you multiple time of missed, received and dialed calls, only the last time. Also you can not mark items such as vids, pics and tunes so that you can send or delete them all together. this must be done one by one. speaker is on the back at the bottom so when holding the phone in natural position, sound is reduced when using loud speaker. Also 2day i dropped it for the first time from only 50cm high. the whole phone including batery came apart. DO NOT BUY!!

The internet icon isnt on the front keys which is great, unlike other models where you are taken to the internet all the time by accident!! The only low point for me is the calandar. Pros: - Excellent crisp sound quality - Very good music phone - It's not stated on Nokia's site but cellphone review websites have tested and 16gb Micro SD cards do work on this phone - Very decent price and cheaper than Nokia 5310 - Can film video - Attractive and Fairly small size cellphone. Cons: - Poor camera though it's supposed to be mainly a music phone - Poor video camera quality. - Battery life could be better - Average screen resolution - Small screen - Comes with horrible headset For a music phone it's excellent. For a camera.. not so much. The cellphone produces excellent sound quality as long as you buy a decent headset to listen to the music. In my opinion, the simplicity, attractiveness, and price of the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic phone earns this 4 stars. By the way, make sure to remember to download the firmware for this cellphone from the Nokia website.

If you are looking for a good budget phone then this phone has no good competitors. It has a very good music player(rare for nokia at such a lower price).Sometimes you forget your computer speaker. The camera performance is average. You won't expect very good pictures though decent photos might be produced under daylight.Very basic user interface and its great fun to use it.even a novice mobile user can find it extremely easy to use it.battery performance is ok.it has a edge too and speed is good.sometimes when your memory becomes almost full,it might be slow.but after all it's extremely a well valued phone.you think yourself a big winner after buying it and it values your every money.Highly Recommended phone

I BOUGHT THIS PHONE JUST 2 DAYS BACK.I READ ON SOME FORUMS WHERE THIS PHONE WAS BEING CRITICIZED.BUT BELEIVE ME THIS IS TRULY AMAZING PHONE TO HAVE.DONT GO BY ITS LOOKS[I LIKE THE LOOKS,SOME PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT].ITS PERFOMANCE IS TRULY AWESOME.JUST THE EARPHONE ARE A BIT AVERAGE.BUT CLARITY IS COOL.YOU CAN PLAY MUSIC AT WILL WITH THE SIDE KEYS AND CHAT OR SURF THE NET.CAMERA IS A MEDIOCRE,BUT CLARITY IS GOOG,AND DOESNT TAKE MUCH TIME TO SAVE UNLIKE N-SERIES OR 5310.OVERALL A PERFECT PHONE FOR A MUSIC LOVER,AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE

It restarts a lot while listening to music, battery backup is poor. around 3hrs max. Except these drawbacks - this phone rocks.

I bought this 3 days agoand can say that this is not only economical but also a great, compact phone if you're on the lookout for a music phone. The sleek, shiny design of the red 5130 is eye-catching and the fact that you can keep the music player either on or on hold in the background as you do other stuff is quite handy. You can expand the phone memory up to 4 GB (some sites claim you can go as far as 8 GB but I haven't had the chance to try it yet) which is just enough to keep those favorite tracks with you at all times. The battery life is pretty impressive as well. I have been using the music player on and off all day for a total of 2-3 hours and the battery charge is still more than half as of the evening. The sound quality is really good. Although the headset is not bad at all, you can use pretty much all the headphones on the market because the phone has a standard headphone input. The music player controls on the left side of the phone are enhanced by blinking lights so that the user can easily see which button is which in the darkness. The camera is adequate with a 2.0 megapixels resolution and the pictures come out clean and neat. I have to admit though that I've never been a camera person so it is more than enough for me. Just so you know, the camera does not have flash. It's a music phone after all. 5130 is the perfect gift for a teenager or any music lover with its affordable price and performance. I highly recommend it.

Yes, this is going to be a show stealer soon. A well crafted cell phone for an affordable price. Has loads of features apart from quite a few shortcomings. But no doubt this is going to be the next show stealer in a country like INDIA. Lets hope it rules in other countries as well.
