Nokia 3230
Review
Phone rating:
The
Nokia 3230 is a budget smartphone. Nokia have tried to pack in as
many popular features as possible into this phone, so on paper it
sounds great, with a megapixel camera, video recording of up to
one hour, MP3 player, Bluetooth wireless games and fast internet
access. It also features a compact design and is one of the lightest
smartphones available - at 110g it compares well with series 40
phones - and it's priced to be popular.
The
3230 isn't a great looker, except in a boxy retro kind of way, but
it's got a sensible keypad and a nice-sized screen. The screen is
standard spec for a Nokia smartphone, and feature-wise it's comparable
with most of Nokia's series 60 phones such as the 6670
or 7610. There are a couple of extras
such as the Visual
Radio,
Push to Talk and Tunes Studio (polyphonic ringtone composer).
The
3230 comes with a Kodak Mobile Service which enables you to upload
images to the Kodak Web site and then have prints delivered to your
address. You can also print the pictures using Bluetooth wireless
technology at any Kodak Kiosk at selected Nokia retail locations.
Obviously these prints have to be paid for!
However,
the downside of the 3230 is that corners have been cut to make this
phone fit the budget. The phone menu is very slow, audio quality
is poor, and there seem to be bugs in the firmware. Before buying
this phone, you should weigh up these factors. Read the user reviews
below and try to test the phone before buying.
Features
of the Nokia 3230 include:
- TFT display: 65,536 colours, 176 x 208 pixels
- 1.3 megapixel camera, with an effective resolution
of 1.23 megapixels (1280 x 960 pixels)
- Video camera (176 x 144 pixels) with up to 1
hour of recording
- Movie Director software for video editing
- Series 60 user interface with selectable themes
- Push to Talk with dedicated key
- Voice features: voice dialing, voice commands,
voice recorder, integrated handsfree speaker
- MP3 music player
- Visual Radio
- MP3 ringtones & polyphonic ringtones
- Tunes Studio application for making polyphonic
ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, MMS, instant
messaging, email (SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, and APOP)
- Java games, including multiplayer Bluetooth
games
- WAP, GPRS class 10, EGPRS
(up to 118.4 kbps)
- HTML/XHTML web browser
- Mobile wallet
- Memory: 32 Mbyte reduced size MMC card
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB
- Triband
- Size: 109 x 49 x 19 mm
- Weight: 110g
- Talktime: 4 hours
- Battery standby: up to 150 hours

Its hot happening phone in the city. It is alive than any other
phone. It has got everything bluetooth, InfraRed, USB, Themes, applications,
games, 1.24 Mega Pix camera, visual/FM Radio, video player, mp3
player, expandable RS-MMC... and lots lots lots more.. phew..!!!
What else can you expect from a phone from making calls to capturing
and watching movies. The dark side of this phone follows with a
very low sound and no vibration from messages and call alert starts
with a beep. I still rate this phone excellent. It has only 24 hrs
standby if you explore all the phone features for a couple of hours.
Should have supplied with 900 mAh batter for longer standby.

The big screen is great but it is not very comfotable to hold during
a conversation. The two buttons above and to the right and left
of the joy stick are too hard to press without pressing the ones
below. It takes a while to work out the menus and how to go through
them but when you have it is easy to use.

I was a bit concerned about not-so-great reviews before buying the
phone, but having a SIM-free deal for £99 including delivery I thought
I couldn't miss the chance and bought it. The menu speed is not
that bad and after a while I don't even pay attention to it. The
features are great (especially the camera). Screen is HUGE and very
clear (and easily readable in the sun). The mp3 player is a bit
of a joke and the loudspeaker is not that good either. However,
the built of the phone is exceptional. I highly recommend the phone
to everyone. And I know what I'm saying since I've used over 100
phones in my life already!

This is a great phone, can't understand the grief its been getting.
Not only does is it a good phone (that is its primary function remember),
it looks great and is really ergonomic/tactile. Its also incredibly
robust. The camera is a bit slow but takes great snaps. Its easy
to hook up to a PC and sync - although I was a bit peeved that the
software was not provided on CD with the phone. The only big gripe
I would have is the mono mp3 player. Why bother including a media
player unless it can cope with stereo?

I don't understand why people here complain about this phone. It
has iR, zoom, bluetooth, radio. The only things I can complain about
is that this phone unlike the SonyEricsson has no serial port, which
means you need an application like Oxygen Phone Manager 2 for Symbian
phones to sync everything with your pc. Wishing for filtering incoming
smses into different folders, more display options in the sms list/address
book... ah small things. I'm more than happy, also because (knock
on wood) I have had no sudden reboots/freezes, which is quite something
because I un/installed a lot of apps. Just my 2 cents. Morgan

To all those whiners condemning this phone, i'd say u need to upgrade
ur brains. Its a smart phone & if ur not smart enuff sell off thee
phone to somebody else who is.And go back to dumb phones that SE
is churning out. This phone's start up is slow coz it has an operating
system(Symbian OS) like ur PC does.. It ask u to close some applications
b4 u're able to save the photo u've juz took coz ur dumb fingers
didn't close it by exiting the programs; instead wat u did was pressing
the hang up button which simply close the window to that program
while the program's still running...! Low phone memory?? Well there's
always the Ngage Patch software whereby it shifts ur msg Inbox from
the phone memory to ur card memory.. No more problems of receiving
large mp3s or 3gp files.. it goes straight to ur memory card...!
And u know wat?? U can cut/copy/paste sms/note texts that u had
juz received to other programs(well like.. calender, To do Note,
sms..etc) All u need to do is learn it. With Symbian OS ur phone
has no limits.. trust me.. Do ur research.. Oh, by the way.. the
battery do SUCK!!! Ciao..

I am amazed at some of the reviews here what exactly are people
expecting in a phone - what I expect is a device that makes a noise
when people want to talk to me, and allows me to talk to them -
this phone does that. The rest of the 'features' are just garnish
designed to make the phoen seem better than other phones. If you
want a good quality mp3 player - buy a good quality mp3 player.
This is primarily a phone and when it coes down to it it does that
very well.

This phone is the worst Nokia ever. I am on to my third now and
this one is also going back. Getting the Sony Ericsson K750i instead.
My fist 3230 was ok to begin with apart from the speaker quality
(very poor) then all of a sudden it just decided to switch off and
not come back on again. This went straight back to O2. I had to
get the same phone cause I was past the 14 days, but thankfully
it was within the 28 days of receiving the phone, so they sent me
another one this time it kept turning its self off and saying the
memory was full when ever i tried to put a song on, it even said
it when I tried to put a contact in! The third one I got did exactly
the same. So this time O2 have said they will now give me a different
handset (thankfully)I have always had a Nokia and this one is a
real let down. I would not recommend this phone at all.

samsung d 500 is better than this,well i dont think so.that d500
doesnt have any memory card slot available while in 3230 u can use
upto 2GB.while in d500 its just limited to 80 MB.80 MB might be
sounding much but when u actually get down to use it u wil come

be honest. This is the first Nokia in 5 yrs for me. I have bought
some Siemens (happy with them) and SonyErr (very happy with it)
but I thought I've gone back to Nokia again unfortunately this 3230
has changed my view about Nokia which is used by over 50% of mobile
users. In just 3 days with this unstable 3230, I have had at least
7 problems in my list, and the list is getting larger. Why Nokia
has released this 3230 that most of them are faulty or at least
have a fatal fault on it ?? I will definately take it back to the
shop/nokia to get it checked but this will be a waste of my time.
Surely Nokia has done a thorough R&D b4 producing this 3230. Anyway,
the bottom line is I AM VERY DISSAPPOINTED with its performance.

coming back to this very sad and frustrating experience, as per
the service centers' advise i did go to the NOKIA OWNED CONCEPT
STORE to complaint about this matter as the service center would
not give me a service nor a refund nor a different phone(THOUGH
I HAVE 1 YEAR WARRANTY ON THE PHONE), they asked to to go to the
place of purchase for an exchange. To my disgust i find the NOKIA

opened half way thru-TO SELL ALL THE DEFECTIVE MODELS???) Sadly
in this country(INDIA) there are no formal and legalised consumer

I previously had the SonyErricson T610, and had no intention of
changing, I loved it! Then I recieved the Nokia 3230 as a gift...
Well, it took some getting used to (as with all new phones). It's
actually very similar in appearance to my T610, in body and menu-style.
APPEARANCE: I think it looks great, but I know some women that dont
like the look of it, so maybe its more of a "Bloke's Phone" in that
respect. PROS! CAMERA: The camera is excellent, the movies are ok,
the muvee maker is a fun gimmick. GAMES: The Agent V game is very
innovative, using the camera to point at "Viruses" that you shoot
at. The other 2 are very impressive real-time 3D games, the Driving
one is especially fun, almost PSone standard, and definately matches
the 3D looks of the GameBoyAdvance. CONNECTIVITY: It has pretty
much everything you'd need. SETTINGS WIZARD!!!! Im on O2, and I
couldnt download the O2Active/GPRS/MMS settings from their site
for this phone, but that didnt matter because the Settings Wizard
sorted it all out for me! This is a very useful feature. CONS? While
many people whine on about "slow menus" and "dusty screen" and "buggy
firmware", I have very little to complain about. It is true that
the battery life isnt the longest, but with all the features and
power within the phone I'm not suprised. I have witnessed very little
in the way of bugs, and the menus are no slower than my SonyEricssonT610.
One thing some may cry about is that it does take about 34secs to
start up. But considering the facts that A) It's damn-near to almost
being a PalmPC in terms of STUFF it does, and B) Once my phone's
on in the morning, its on for the day, I find this to be of little
hinderance. THE FINAL WORD: Feature-packed, smart-looking, great
phone! I'm not telling you to buy it, it may not be everyone's taste,
but I like it!

Does Nokia actually test its phones before they go out of the door
????? Speaker quality is also poor and distorts when playing real

phone. There is one or two annoying things but hey thats the same

It works well with sat nav programs such as tomtom and route 66.
I would say read the instructions carefully for this phone because

want to confuse me with all the options when finally in it. The

i'm thinking that there might a lot of factory faulty handsets in
this range, because i've been using my one for a week and can't
fault it, was rather frustrating to start with, you really need
to read the instructions, i had a problem with it saying "memory
full close some programes" and i'm thinking there's no programes
open, but with reading the instructions found if you hold down the
menu key it lists open programes, apparently if you don't click
exit when using any thing, it keeps running, i was just hitting
the end call button to get back to main screen, i suppose i'm not
used to these "smart" phones. as for the problems with it being
very quiet, well i found it ear splittingly loud at any where near
top level, mp3's through the loud speaker are a little distorted,
but hey this isn't a stereo system. alot of people told me to go
for one of the sony-erikssons, like a k700 or k750i well i tried
my mates ones and they like serious balls compared to this, one
of my buddies is mr system analyst and network guy, and he goes
"the codeing and the programming is much better on the k750" that
may be the case but i've always found erikssons a battle to get
comfortable with, the menu's are just wierd,( bear in mind i've
owned 3 of them ) nokias in general are easier and nicer to use
and as for all that code shite, he's having a laugh, this phone
has way more features than his k750, and he can't get his to hook
up with his computer, the 3230 is almost plug and play in that respect,
easy file transfers for all file types. all in all i can't fault
this phone, maybe i just got lucky and got one of the few non-defective
sets? but the reviews i read on hear very nearly discouraged me,
infact i had already ordered it as my upgrade, and was expecting
to be sending it back the same day it arrived. also there's a lot
being made of the poor battery life, i haven't seen that either,
lasts just as long if not longer than my 6230 that i upgraded from
perhaps that "charge your handset for 16 hours the first time" really
does work. don't let the reviews scare you, this is a good phone,
especailly when you consider the price to features ratio, and lets
be honest if you are unfortunate to get a faulty one, send it back!
we have rights as consumers.

I initially purchased the Nokia 3230 because of it's great features
mentioned on the website. After I started using it, I realised that
the mp3 player is mono and the menus are slow. It has also started
to collect dust under the screen (after 1 week), and I don't know
how bad that will be in 2 years unless I clean it regularly. This
is inevitable. The camera is not too bad, and it is a Symbian series
60 phone so if you purchase a large memory card you can install
many apps, which can be quite useful. Battery life is not long.
The keypad is hard to use. This is overall a good phone for its
price, however. My recommendation for anyone interested in purchasing
this phone would be to simply wait for the Nokia n70 to be released
in late 2005 unless you really need a phone right now. There is
the nokia 6230i, which is stylish, with many features including
a better camera and mp3 in stereo, but it is not Symbian, so you
can't "expand your horizons" so to speak.

I've had this phone about a month and basically it's been ok although
a little slow. Two things have let it down big time for me though.
Quite a lot of dust has gathered under the screen which has been
a common problem with some Nokia's I've had. This one is definitely
the worst though, I'm not impressed. More seriously it seems to
drop signal for no apparent reason very frequently and the final
straw was when the screen completely died on me in the weekend.
I can tell you it's going straight back to the CarphoneWarehouse.
I've bought the K750i Sony instead (which is awesome in comparision!).

Overall, the Nokia 3230 is a very good phone providing a wealth
of features that will be more than enough for most users. Using
Nokia's PC Suite, syncronising contact data from my old Nokia to
this new one was simple and fast over an infrared link, though make
sure you are using the latest version of PC Suite, as my older version
did not seem to work with the 3230. The screen is large, bright
and crisp and refreshes quickly - any sluggishness is due to the
operating system on board the phone, and while it is noticable I
have not found it to be excessive. The phone loses some points due
to its keypad, which while generally responsive and easy to use,
does demand some awkward positioning of the thumb and it is all
to easy to hit the correct/delete button instead of the right select
button, and vice versa. Build quality seemed solid, though one has
to question the wisdom of having the memory card slot under the
battery. SIM insertion and removal is also quite finickity. These
are however minor points, the phone has a lot of offer although
I would strongly reccomend that a user unfamiliar with the phone
reads the manual provided, especially as there were quite important
instructions for functions that work slightly differently to other
Nokia phones.

Best of all is that the phone doent miss out on all the music options.

the battery life is still a bit sluggish. The phone is light and

well.I guess nokia designers never thought that a person would ever

Most phones have a slipon sim fecility why not have the same one.Secondly
i had to struggle to take of the rear cover, felt like it would

Having bought this phone on the first day it was released here in
the U.K , all i can say is that I have fully regretted buying this.
I had the 7250i and the 3330 before that. Both of them are very fast
i.e the menus are near instant and very quick. Expecting the same
from this phone I am very disappointed. Just a short list of why
you should not buy this phone 1)Extremely slow menus, takes a lot
of time to respond to the buttons. 2)Switching on the phone takes
atleast a minute for you to make a phone call.Compare that to the
7250,which needs all of 10 seconds. 3)no automatic keylock. You do
have a PIN number enabled lock that you can enable, but you have
to enter a 4 digit pin each time you want to use it , and on a slow
phone like this, its a nuisance and a waste of time 4)Has some crappy
video editing software which might be good for teenagers or those
who have nothing better to do but fiddle around with their phones, but
for most of us,perfectly useless. The only good thing is that it
atleast looks like a proper phone and not a toy, which most phones
nowadays look like and I dont have to squirm in embarassment in
front of my patients when i answer calls in front of them.

Having previously owned a nokia 6230, when my contract came up for
an upgrade 2 weeks ago, I was Worried that I wouldn't find a replacement
that lived up to it. Sucked in by all the advertising, I eventually
Ordered a Sony ericsson S700i on my existing vodafone contract.
2 Days later the Sony was making its way back to Vodafone and I
was still unsure what to do ( Not that the Sony was all that Bad,
Just Didn't feel right, impressed as I was with the camera, I found
using the 180' swivel action starting to wear thin after only 1
day + Vodafone's software makes it a headache to use Mp3's as a
ringtone ). Anyway, I found myself in a well known Independent Phone
retailer, and after trying out the Nokia 6230i, Samsung D500 and
Motorola RAZR, I was presented with one of Nokia's newest phone's
the 3230, It wasn't love at first sight, but, the more I handled
it the more I got that " It feel's right " feeling. I'm now the
Proud owner of a Generic, ( Not programmed with your network providers
software , more on that in a minute ) ,Nokia 3230. Firstly lets
get the camera bit out of the way, Lets not forget ladies and gentlemen
that for all the hype, camera phones don't, and we don't expect
them to, match up to anywhere near the image quality of a proper
digital camera. Having said that, the 1.2 megapixel camera on the
3230 is more than adequate for taking good quality, printable, everyday
fun photo's, and a world of improvement over the VGA camera's fitted
to earlier models. The digital zoom is a bit of a joke as it deteriorates
in quality from good to rubbish in only 3 stages. The video capture
is not much improved over my old 6230, handy to have for those drunken
discussion's outside the kebab shop that you might want to remember
in the morning, but not much use for anything else. The Phone is
supplied with a 32Mb memory card ( could do with 128mb really )
and is fitted behind the back panel above the Battery, and over
the top of a very awkward and fiddly to remove SIM card. The external
speaker is just about loud enough for hands free in a car, although
sound quality seem's to have slacked a bit over the 6230. The Keyboard
is easy to use, although your thumbs seem to have to stretch a bit
more to reach the *,0 + Hash key's, the five way key common on other
Nokia's is replaced with a very small joystick, fiddly at first
but practice makes it no more of a chore to use than other 5-way
key's. The Screen is great, good quality, and easy to read. The
menu,( accessed with a dedicated key ) as with all nokia's to date,
is reasonably self explanitory. This is a Smart phone don't forget,
so there's a lot more icons to navigate through. Its set out in
the grid pattern now becoming the norm on most phones. I often used
my 6230 as an Mp3 player, and I'm glad to say that the 3230 is every
bit as good, but with the added benifits of being able to FF and
REW tracks. You can also use Mp3 tracks as ringtones. ( PLEASE NOTE-
phones purchased direct from network companies i.e. Vodafone etc..
will not allow mp3's to be used as ringtones as they have signed
contracts with Digital Rights Managment [ DRM } companies to restrict
Mp3 use,so you have to pay for a mp3 track. Thats why I asked for
a Generic ( unlocked ) phone, this also avoids having vodafone's
cheesy "LIVE" software, + you get better Games with a generic phone
) I haven't quite worked out how to use the Visual Radio, but just
as a radio it works fine. "Push-to-talk" is still a mystery to me,
but I'll get around to that eventually ( supposed to make the phone
like a walkie-talkie ) All the usual applications are there, e.g
Converter, Calculator, Alarm Clock, Calender, Wallet, Note book,
Voice Recorder etc... The Games supplied with my Generic phone (
REMEMBER- Games supplied with phones from networks will Differ )
are to be Honest outstanding! Playstation 2 this phone may not be
, but certainly comparable to a Playstaion 1, which on a phone this
small is nothing short of amazing. 1] "AGENT V" is a wierd but strangely
addictive game using the camera to project 'things' in realtime
on the screen, they appear to be in the room around you as you move
the phone about you then collect or shoot. 2] "RALLY PRO" is a car
rally/driving game, Choose your tracks, choose your cars ( EVO 8,
etc..) and go....THE BEST GAME I'VE SEEN ON A MOBILE PHONE NOT DESIGNED
SPECIFICALLY FOR GAMING!!!! TOP CLASS. 3] "WARRIOR" is a 3D space
ship shoot 'em up, reminiscent of the old arcade game "space harrier",
Superb. Infrared data transfer works perfectly. Bluetooth, again,
works perfectly. I'm also the proud owner of a G4 AppleMac running
Panther OSX, and transferring photo's,video's,Mp3's and other files
over bluetooth has so far gone without a hitch. Yes, once in a while,
the phone does "crash" or behave wierdly, but this is very rare
and only becomes a nuisance if you let it, remember-ITS NOT A PC!
If, like me, you haven't used a smart phone before then read this
bit very carefully " READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL " !!!!!!!!!!, I'm
only half way through and I have to refer to it more than you can
imagine. This is the only way you will get the most from your phone.
I got frustrated a few times before I eventually gave up and read
the manual. All-in-all Nokia have released another " Classic " in
the form of the 3230, Yes there will be doubters and moaners, but
at the end of the day its just a phone, all the other stuff it does
is just a gimmick to make us all upgrade and spend more money every
12 months, but I'll be the first to say that Nokia does gimmicky
very well, techno heads will be pleased, fashionista's may be put
off. In short- it's not too bulky, heavy or awkward in shape, fits
in your jeans pocket well, and does everything I need it for, after
all, in 12 month's time I'll be looking for a new one!! ; )

has a perfect and a neat keypad to type on...3230 has all same features
as 7610/6670 too has...but with extra features like FM/AM Radio,1.3
Megapixel camera,EDGE,New Games.....but dissapointingly it has low
battery life and low internal and external memory than those Nokia
Smartphones...but still its an OK phone....

Having never owned a so called "smart phone" before I
was very disappointed in the speed of its functions. I also have
problems with the phone locking up for no reason and then having
to turn it off and on again. Sometimes when I try and take a photo,
the phone asks me to close other applications that are not even
open. I was also assured by my Orange dealer that I could swap just
the cradle for my Nokia car kit and not the complete system, however
having spoken to Nokia they informed me that there is no cradle
available for the 3230. I'm now waiting for the new 6230i to become
available on Orange and then the 3230 will be going on ebay.

I've had my 3230 for 3 days from Orange, I'm sending it back, the
reason is the sound quality on the speaker phone is very tinny,
when you record video it is very jerky. The camera is very good,
clear & defined but kept locking up on me, I'd take a photograph
the phone wouldn't store it said I'd have to close some applications,
I'd got non open, when it did save one & I went to the gallery the
phone would say closing application. finally I couldn't connect
it to my PC via bluetooth no matter what I tried, I'm going back
to the Nokia 6630
