Nokia 3100 Review

Phone rating:

The Nokia 3100 comes with a cool glow-in-the-dark cover. Never lose your phone in the dark ever again! The 3100 also has lights that flash when the phone rings - in time with your ring tone!

The phone features a smart design with a user-friendly keypad and has lots of nice features such as tri-band that normally come in more expensive phones. The integrated handsfree speaker and excellent battery life make this is an excellent entry-level phone.

The main downside is that there is no built-in camera, but if you don't mind that, or are happy to pay extra for the optional "Fun Camera", then it's highly recommended.

Features of the Nokia 3100 include:

  • Glow-in-the-dark cover
  • Flashing lights when phone rings
  • Colour display (4096 colours within 128 x 128 pixels)
  • Optional Camera (available separately)
  • Nokia Xpress-on™ Gaming cover (available separately)
  • Java™ games: Beach Rally, Snake EX2 and Bowling, plus downloadable games
  • Multimedia Messaging (Receive messages containing text, audio, and image, which can be saved as wallpapers and ringing tones; send messages containing images, audio and text to other compatible phones; delivery reports; multiple recipients; scaling)
  • Animated screensavers
  • SMS Email
  • Integrated handsfree speaker
  • xHTML browser
  • Pop-Port™ interface
  • Connect to PC with Connectivity cable DKU-5
  • Alarm clock, stopwatch, calculator
  • Speed dialing for up to 9 names
  • Tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900)
  • Weight: 85 g
  • Size: 42.8 mm x 101.8 mm x 15.2-19.6 mm
  • Battery talktime: Up to 2-6 hours
  • Battery standby: Up to 170-410 hours (7-17 days)

What a disappointing find. I was looking for some real data about this phone on a review site, but all this one has is kiddy stuff. "no radio" and "cool colors" or "not enough memory"? Good grief! WTF! How does it work: Reception, sensitivity, handset loudness, headset loudness, speakerphone quality, do you have to reposition the headset to hear properly, does the battery drain quickly, does it slip out of its holster, is the little keypad hard to use, explodes when dropped? How about something other than "I look cool using a blue phone". I hate to be the one to inform you, but if you think that way, you are not only NOT cool, you are a geek.

Excellent phone for a cheaper model. Ringtones were disappointing compared to my sister's Sony Ericsson Z200, but still sounded okay (just not amazing). Other than that it is an absolutely cracking phone. Storage is good and easy to manage. Display is fab for a cheaper phone. Battery life is the best I've had on any mobile yet.

ok, first of all, i would recommend anyone thinking about buying this phone to definantly buy it, dont hesitate. the good features are: its java compatible, so u could get some pretty cool games on ur phone, polyphonic rintones, it is not compatible with those voice ringtones, BUT it has a voice recorder, and if u mix that with one speaker from ur headphones(place the mic on the bottom of ur phone directly on the speaker when recording, play with it to find the volume that works) u instantly have free "real song" music/voice ringtones, just play the song and record, its easy and free, and u can set it as ur ringtone when done recording, so who needs "voice ringtone" compatibility? it has built in speaker phone, great color screen resolution, download background pics and screensavers, two menu styles to choose from, classic nokia style menu, and grid style(just like a palm pilot), long lasting battery that can recharge from dead to full battery in less than an hour! tri-band g sm capabilities, text and mms messaging, attachable camera, WHICH IS ACTUALLY BETTER THAN BUILT-IN!!!! Because if u get one built-in, and then new camera phones come out with better resolution cameras in them ur still stuck with ur crappy res camera, but if their seperate than when the new better attachable cameras come out, u can still use them with the same phone, small light-weight design , snug and durable fitting faceplates, AND a very good phone if u plan on unlocking it!!! because it allows full customization for internet and mms messaging settings, AND nokia.com provides the correct settings for you regardless of which model or which provider, this i personally know ;-) the only downsides are, not the greatest on availiable memory for apps/games, the built in speaker used for ringing/speaker phone isn't that loud, and no bluetooth(which means no wireless earpieces), but regardless, its a great buy, i got mine for free when i signed up for at&t, i know use it for t-mo bile(since its unlocked) i am extremely happy with this phone

I was really looking forward to my 3100. I previously had a t68i but wanted somthing a bit more modern eg improved colour screen, poly ringtones. Once i got it, i was a bit dissapointed. The menu set up on the phone is very dull compared with the other menue set ups on the other similar nokia ie 6610, 6100, 7250, 5100. Also the ringtones were not that great. They were polythoonic but again not quite up to the other nokias above. The colour screen is good for 4108 colour phones and the phone is very good in shape and appearance. It does lack business features and the glow in the dark feature aint that great. I also bought the camera that takes pictures. The picture quality is good but having to have a camera as well means that you are better off buying a nokia with built in camera if thats what your prioities are. Overal, the phone was good but if you want somthing advanced, this is not for you.

Okay guys, time to be honest I think. The Nokia 3100 is a grat little phone and I would recommend it to anyone for it's superb style, modern sound and looks and for the amount of features that it supports. When you consider the price (I bought mine on PAYG for less that £100 WITH a digital camera included) this phone is brilliant. It's funny when I read some of these reviews and all these little kids (coz that what you are) complain of no inbuilt camera, no IR, no FM Radio. Consider... DO YOU NEED THESE? The answer...NO. Now GROW UP!! You can hook this phone up to you computer no probs (so no need for IR), you can get loads of digital cameras to take your photos separately (so no need for inbuilt camera) and if you want to listen to FM radio through your phone, well, there's really not much hope for you to start with (get an mp3 player, for God's sake!). Bottom line, this is a great phone. Don't spend more time and money buying something twice as expensive for half the price. Oh, and thanks for reading this revie w! ;-) P x

Nokia 3100 is an all round great phone. Its outward appearence is great while its software is also user friendly so it's very easy to use. As it is a tri-band phone it works in allmost all the networks. Its 4096 coloured display is impressive while the keypad is easy to text. The Glow-in-the-dark feature helps to find the phone when lights are switched off. Further the 128x128 passive matrix colour display screen lets you surf through GPRS easily. Loudspeaker feature makes it easy to have a convrsation and it also lets you to use the phone while driving with out a need of a headphone. The battery is also great as it can stand more than three days in a normal usage. Regarding all those facts I bought the new Nokia 3100 and further I would recommend it to any one else who is interested in buying a phone.

I have owned this camera since September 2003. Its now June 2004 and still going strong! The only let down was the price of the add on cameras. Bought them both and prefer the picture given by the cable one. The battery life just seems to go on for ever. Charge it only once a week. I could not give 5 stars as the camera is not built in although this is not a problem as both types of camera, cable or an independant working one are easily purchased. The calender is really worth it as are the multi functions available. Small, compact with long battery life. Quad band so can be used abroad, what more does one need?

The only thing that dissapointed me was the lack of a built in cam and infa-red, the 3200 did have these but does looked horrible and tacky, this phone is a much nicer design and layout of the buttons etc and the 3200 costed alot more. im very happy with my phone:)

But for the price range I must say it is definately the best in its class and the bright light is excellent. It is also very light and has a good screen. If your looking for a relatively cheap phone, go for this as it will contain the most features for the price.

Firstly, Id like to let you know that 3100 is not the phone for anyone to go with. Many people are happy with this phone just because it is cheap. Hold a second, NO infrared, NO bluetooth... the connectivity cable for nokia is soo expensive. I have 4 friends which have this phone, and they are only slightly proud because of the cheap price. Who wants to buy the radio headset? This phone is pretty sad, and it is just like the 3310 in Color... Dont buy it, save up .. and go for either the 6610 or the 6100 if you have a budget around 230 Us dollars in the future.. i think 6100 is the better one.. but they both have infrared.. Also, all three phones 6610 , 6100 and 3100 all have limited polyphonic tones. Only 4 sounds allowed at once. The fun camera quality isnt good, and neither the camera headset. I suggest camera people, go for my phone the 6220, or look at the 6600, or the 6230. If you want this phone and you are in asia pacific, get the 3105, it is the exact same thing, but it has a better casing for the sports people. Only good thking about this phone? Screensavers, and it is really cheap. Seriously Nokia, you could have done a better job with a phone like this.

When making/receiving a call, there is a constant HISSY noise..rather annoying i think when your chatting or listening to some-one on the phone. Although with the hiss, it gives clear sharp sound when listening to the other caller. Also when making calls on the 3100, you sound much clearer to the person on the other end. Call quality is far better than the 3510i. Apart from that...this wee phone is great!

I think I'll address a few misconceptions about this phone. I switched service providers and received the phone for $20. My previous phone was the Samsung N400 which was essentially a piece of garbage in color. The biggest drawback of this phone is also a benefit for many people - its size. It is tiny, something around three ounces, and it's challenging to use it when you're used to a larger phone or a flip phone. However, it works just fine. Many people complain about the lack of volume control on calls. If they choose not to read the instruction manual, that's their fault, but there is in fact volume control - simply press to the right to increase volume and to the left to increase volume. The handset speaker is tiny, but is still audible in a car with the windows open at 80mph. If you really have problems, you can switch to the speakerphone which is a nice feature. The phone is small and the lack of antenna is somewhat disappointing and will result in slightly less reception than a flip phone with an extending antenna. However, my area usually has terrible service and the GSM network is fine here. Any audio problems are related to the network quality in your area, as most calls should be clear unless you're in a cement room or something. Overall, this is a very cute phone that's easy to use and deal with. The little extras like Java games and ringtones are nice, but it works fine as is.

Who knows how many of the last rave reviews on this site have been written by undercover sales reps, but in my opinion, its just an average phone. Its cool and all, does neat things, but audio quality is pretty crappy. Lots of hiss and pops and clicks, sometimes an echo on my own voice. I understand that this might have a little to do with local network quality, but another GSM phone I had recently on the same service and city did not have the noise problem. If you are looking for a phone that does cool stuff, fine, but if you want a phone thats good for talking on, pick another model. I'm already back in the market for a new one.

The poly ringtones are amazing for quality and the games too, not to metion the high pixel colur screen. This phone has tonnes of memory, so you can personalise you phone extremly well. I'm not sure how many ringtones you can download. If you want to dowload ringtones I recommend cbfmobile.com! Overall I gives this great phone four stars. Very light phone, reasonable size. Buttons are adequate but fiddly for someone with large fingers. Speaker is outstanding as are the melodies that come with the phone. Obtaining additional melodies is a problem as the phone is not as some believe polyphonic! The add on camera is a let down as it looks like a childs toy. The view finder is useless and the pictures are terrible. (Can't blame the phone for the camera) But it does have a flash? Better to use it without one though. Being a tri-band phone is a nice plus. Game play is pretty good with the built in games. Can connect to your pc through a seperately purchased cable, perhaps this should be bundled with the camera as it offers a whole new experience! Overall, a nice compact little phone with plenty of features, could have done with a hands free included.

The Sony phone had a few problems so I went back to Nokia and chose the 3100. The "loudspeaker" option on this phone is first class! I was on holiday recently and phoned home to my children. My husband sitting near me could hear the conversation loud and clear! Also this phone is stylish and attractive, very easy to use and definitely a great buy!!!

I bought this phone so both my wife (who has a 6100) and I can have two Nokia phones that fit the same Nokia 126 Handsfree car kits. However the 3100 is very disappointing. The worst problem is you have to position the earpiece very precisely on your ear otherwise you cannot hear a thing! Even when you can hear the call, the sound quality is poor and there is no volume control for the incoming call. What's more the microphone is not good and so your own voice is poorly transmitted. If that's not enough there are other annoying 'features'. For instance if you remove the battery there appears to be no internal backup and so the date and time have to be reset when you replace it. This phone was so bad that I simply put it back in it's box and returned it to O2 for a refund.

The Phone does it's job well at being small in size factor. The most attractive part of it being the sharp and high resolution color screen, though 65K wudn't have hurt anyone, most of the time 4096 does a darn good job. I like it in white cuz the ring around the fone seems to dimish.Else in all other colors it looks disgusting.I wish nokia relizes soon that it's designers r agitated with it's low pay high work regime. It's too plasticky .I fail to understand why Nokia introduces metallic finish in higher priced models and cheap plastic in lower range ones whereas the hardware,OS and MOST of the features remain relatively the same, give or take a few gizmos such as camera, radio. Is it tryin to deliberately create different classes of people based on the amount of money they can spend? Must people wishing not to spend much on a fone, be content with cheap plastic?Must the ones throwing truckloads of money at the undeserving firm get to flaunt silver n metallic sleek n expensive lookin devices? After all, how expensive would it be , if u were to add a nice metallic finish cover to the 3100 ? perhaps another 5% of the cost at best??? And yeah the keys are too close, although i love the feel of the keypad, it's kind soft . Good for texters like me. However when i'm lookin for readability in the dark , im not askin for flood lamps! Nokia pls stop manufacturing keypads that are so bright that my pupils contract and the screen then , actually appears dimmer than it shud . I like the features....Java, MMS, poly n the works....but pls can u upgrade the memory? Cuz what paltry Kbs u offer is a complete no no. And well , yeah..... I hate the fact that it has no Infra red port. Firstly i wudn't NEED a port if there were enuff momory. But when i do need to juggle stuff to n fro from my PC, i find the port missing. i just have to lug around the data cable all the time is it? How much more wud it cost you to include the port?? I dunno u spoilt a great fone . Had u only added a port n more memory....it wud have been defacto standard for it's class... and ya....pls stop manufacturing cheap see through plastic covers.... it's been ages since we have been tolerating you. We spend a huge amount on phones . We carry them to parties and gala affairs too. No we do not think we need to change our fone at a party to a more exclusive lookin one, the way we do with our watches . So pls, quit makin stuff seem like Macintosh accessories..... And oh yeah..... how come everything that can be attached , is an accessory that comes for a forbidden price ??? Why cant you , for once , provide the headset along with the fone? atleast one basic accessory?? As it is ur accessories r worth a kings ransom all the time.... and frankly speaking they wudn't be worth all that much even if crafted out of pure silver! And in third world countries like mine, Ten thousand bucks is a no joke affair!! your phone range in my country starts from approx Rs 4500 and goes on till approx Rs22000 . The price of Gold is approx Rs 4600/10 grams. Now you may well imagine how expensive your phones work out to be n atop of that, i get cheap plastic? And dont call 3100 a fone for the young student generation. No student can afford to spend Rs 10,000 in India on a fone! Rs 10,000 is 2 months salary for most people . Finnish giant....do you hear me? Dont tell me u didn't study the market before u got here. Dont tell me u actually incur high costs and are makin low marginal profit on high volume sales..... Cuz from what it seems.... ur just laughin ur way to the bank with High Profit, High volume sale strategy, which works because India is a land of masses. There are trillions of people here! And communication is a neccessity, not a luxury!

Three days ago I bought the 3100 £75 sim free from 'Phones4U'!!!. having given up my Sony CZ7 as I needed a tri-band. What a nice little 'phone the 3100 is, though very 'plasticky' looking with its translucent blue cover. It seems to work well and the loudspeaker is far better than the Sony's. I also prefer the Nokia navigation and predictive text. 'T9' (Sony) is rubbish as it does not allow storage of new words as does the Nokia system. This 'phone is unececcessarily complicated for an old man like me though. I want to speak and text and that's about it.WAP & MMS no use to me at all. The daily reminder is brilliant as is the 'vibrate'. The keyset is so bright you can actually use it as a torch in the dark!! But the glow ring round the front cover is useless and dims very quickly. Another problem (apologies to Henry Ford) You can have any colour you like as long as its pale blue.WHY show all the covers if you cannot buy them??? Although The 'phone is really up to the mark, that is more than can be said for NOKIA. I telephoned them 9 times to try and get info on the 3200 (my first choice, but unavailable although people are advertising it)as their web site is useless and gives NO tech specs. I got so fed up with the constant dial 1 for this 2 for that etc. and then to be told by this guy he would not speak to me unless I was a 'Club Nokia' member was outrageous. He told me that if I wanted info on any particular 'phone I had to dial their tech help line at 75pence per minute. EXCUSE ME???? I am trying to spend £200 on one of their products and they want to CHARGE ME to find out what they should have on their web site. I don't think so!!!! An e-mail complaining has brought absolutely NO response!! 0/10 for effort. 0/10 for customer satisfation. A communications company that CANNOT communicate. Wooden spoon for you NOKIA!

I've had this phone for 3 days now, and I can honestly say I'm rather impressed, I've received it as an upgrade for my O2 contract, I must say when I first saw pictures of the 3100, I was struck by its rather subdued looks, which is rather unusual for Nokia these days. The sound quality is fantastic, even on speakerphone mode, and people I've talked to over the phone have noticed how clear it is, although I think the network plays a part in that. I've had quite a few Nokia phones over the years including 5110, 7110, 6210, 8210, 3310, and 3410 and only really had problems with the 5110 over that time. So the 3100 has a lot to live up to, the colour screen if fantastic, and as usual, very easy to navigate with (still not as good as the 7110 in my opinion though!). Even though I'm giving this little phone 5 star's, I think it does have a few niggling problems, like the on/off button, is a little 'difficult' to use (too small if you have big fingers like mine), and that's the problem with the key pad as well, the buttons are too close together, but I suppose I'm nit picking. Over all.....Nokia well done you've done it again brilliant phone, I just hope that reliability and build quality are as good with the 3100, as with the previous Nokia's I've had the pleasure of owning, however, I think a lot the day to day reliability issues fall's to the owners of the phones, and how well they are looked after!!!!!!!!

However, I found the voice quality, both received and sent, are not as good as the Nokia 3310.(And 3310 costs just a third of 3100!
