Nokia 1100 Review

Phone rating:

Review: March 2004. Updated October 2005.

The Nokia 1100 is an entry-level phone, designed with simplicity and reliability in mind. One nice feature of the 1100 is its silicon keypad - easy-to-use and non-slip. The sides of the phone are also made of a non-slip material, so overall the phone is nice to hold and physically easy to use.

The 1100 does come with a few gimmicky features, such as a torch, but Nokia has mostly stuck to basic features, so reliability and user-friendliness should follow. If you're looking for something exciting, look elsewhere, but if you want a basic phone with excellent battery life, the Nokia 1100 is a good choice. The new Nokia 1110 improves on the 1100 in a number of ways.

Features of the Nokia 1100 include:

  • Black & white display with selectable font size
  • Phonebook with up to 250 names on SIM card and up to 50 in internal memory
  • Distribution lists and concatenated text (SMS) messaging
  • Picture Messaging
  • Predictive text input for most European languages, Arabic, and Hebrew
  • Date and time screensavers
  • Built-in alarm and reminders
  • Stopwatch and countdown timer
  • Full-size animated screensavers
  • Two built-in games (Snake II and Space Impact+)
  • Automatic keyguard lock
  • Keyguard lock with security code
  • Flashlight
  • Mono ringtones with composer
  • Speed dialing for up to 9 names
  • Vibration alert
  • Dual band
  • Weight: 86 g
  • Size: 106 mm x 46 mm x 20 mm
  • Talktime: Up to 2 - 4.5 hours
  • Standby: Up to 100 - 400 hours

Let's be clear about this. Phone's are for communicating with and should be simple to operate. Having had mobiles for work since 1991 (and I hate them all: "enslaved by technology" and all that) I rate Nokia's. They have a logical menu system and are tough and reliable. If you want a fashion accessory (yawn!) or want to send a picture of your bottom to your many and varied acqaintances then go somewhere else but the neat little Nokia 1100 is the phone user's phone. It's small, inexpensive and you use it to talk to people. Having said that the super bright LED torch and ringtone composer are great little additions....thoroughly recommended!!

If all you need is to do call people and send a few texts, then this is the phone for you! Comfortable to hold, pleasant on the eye with the option of mutltiple replacement facias, then there can no complaints about design. The menu contains the typical Nokia line-up and is easy to operate around. Overall, this phone contains the bear essentials and doesnt try to be something it is not : like a digital camera or an mp3 player, but still is slightly basic. You cannot complain, however, for the price!!

I bought this phone 3 months ago and it was great for just making a call, or texting someone but, after a while the phone started giving problems! If I receive a sms, the phone would just restart as soon as I open the sms! I dont know if the problem is with the sim or with the phone! For the price your paying for this phone, I guess its okay.. But spend a few more pounds and get a Motorola V620

For those of us old fools from the old school this phone is just about perfect. It's a rare piece in the US and has nothing to recommend it to people who need lots of stuff on their phones, It won't play Chingy's "right thurr" in polyphony, but it's light, cheap, small, and extra durable for a cell phone abuser. Voice and text are my main concerns and it does both well.

I have been using this phone for almost an year now and have not faced any problems. However the lack of extras does pinch sometimes. The torch however is a clever addition and can be of real use in some situation. The only problem it seems to have is that the volume of the sound that you hear in a call seems to go down from time to time. Not sure if it is a service provider related issue or due to the phone. But overall I am quite satisfied with this model.

This is my third or fourth phone and I love it. As an entry level phone it is just perfect. It doesn't come with those features gadget freaks love, like 65k color screen, polyphonic/mp3 ring tones, mp3 player, digital camera, mp3 player, wap, e-mail, pda-like organizer, etc., etc., etc. No, it is mobile phone and it excels at that. Great battery life and easy to use too. Top that with a flashlight, alarm, and some other basic but neat features, and you got the right phone for the job. It even comes with two easy games (with force feedback!) for those times you are just waiting for the wife outside the mall. The only con I can find is the lack of multiple phone numbers per contact, but as a whole I am very happy with my Nokia 1100.

I started a new job two weeks ago and was given a Nokia 1100 as my work phone. At first the Nokia 1100 appeared to be a cheap and nasty piece, but as the day went on and as I was using the Nokia 1100 more and more, I became quite fond of it. The phone is a good size and doesn't weigh much. Which makes it comfortable to carry around in your pocket. It's very easy to use and the battery appears to last forever. I have had the phone on standby for the last 7 days and made/received a dozen calls and not yet needed to recharge it. Even though the menu style operating system is easy to use, I personally think it appears rather dated; it looks exactly the same as the menu system I had on my old Nokia 7110, which I brought four or five years ago. Perhaps they should change the graphic symbols within the menu system to make it appear different and more upto date. ?? Yet, you could say, "Don't fix it, if it's not broken." The flashlight is nice and bright, and it's very useful, especially once I discovered that you don't need to keep the button pressed down to make it stay on. What I find annoying about the Nokia 1100, is you can only enter one number per name in the contacts phonebook, which is not at all good if your contact has, for example, a mobile, a LAN phone and a fax number. I also found that you are limited to 16 characters per contact name. This combined with the one number per contact issue is probably something worth considering when purchasing the Nokia 1100, especially if your trying to enter contact names like, 'Jackie Stewarts mobile', 'David Dixon's LAN Phone' or 'Richard Watson's Fax.' You could probably think of ways round this, by abbreviating. But I did find this rather frustrating when entering my work colleagues contact details. Overall I think the Nokia 1100 is a nice tidy looking, easy to use basic mobile phone. Which seems to last for ages without the need for recharging. The only let down for me, is the one number per name limitation within the contacts function. At first I wasn't too sure about the Nokia 1100, as it appeared a bit dated compared with other mobile phones and it reminded me of an old Nokia I use to own a few years back. But, I must admit, my fondness for the Nokia 1100 grew the more I used it.

I give this phone 3 out of 5. The phone itself is solid to hold, and basic. And those are the 2 main reasons I bought it. It is going to be my dads phone, so the lack of features is not a problem (esp as I have an nGage, 6310i and a 3330 kicking around, plus my works phone which is an orange spv c500). Whilst a good solid phone, I mark it down for a few of reasons. Firstly, it lacks bluetooth. Now I have gadgety phones, my dad is unlikely to ever use BT, but it is a feature I feel should be supplied. Secondly, I feel as it is marketed at those people who just want a simple, reliable phone, (and possibly marketed at the elderly) why have they not chosen to make it shock and water resistant like the 5210 and 6250. And thirdley, it does not boast all the features of some of its counter parts, so I am surprised how low the battery life is. Maybe I have just been spoilt by my 6310i, as to be fair, for its size and class the battery life is good (but could e better :D) In choosing this phone, I had several criteria to meet, Nokia (if possible), longest battery life available, simple, large keypad. - In the end I was torn between this, the 3310/30/3410/3510 on keypad size and the 5210/6250 for ruggedness.

This phone saved my life. There I was miles in the middle of nowhere stood by the side of my broken down car. I suddenly remembered that my trusty nokia 1100 no gimmick mobile was in the glove compartment. My concerns were drawn to the fact that the phone had'nt been near a charger for several weeks and would most probably not work, How wrong was I, with the first push of the button, the phone lit up and with vodaphone's superb coverage of out of reach places I was soon on the phone for help. After several games of Snake 11 and space impact I heard the sounds of a helicopter flying nearby, I immediatley set about trying to get their attention, then I remembered the 1100 had a torch. I hit the button and started waving the phone which was sending a beam toward the helicopter, My only hope being that it did not blind the pilot with it's immense power. After a successful rescue, My nokia 1100 was awarded with a medal from her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 for outstanding reliabilit y and quality. The moral of my story is this. phones can be played with, or phones can be relied upon.

I am 13 years old and this is my first mobile phone. I like it mostly because of two things: 1- it is incredibly THIN!! so it suits on the pocket of my jeans and i can keep it there when i go out (holder isn't so necessary). 2-it doesn't call the peolpe's attention, so when i walk back home from school, or when i go by train or by bus i feel secure. (i mean, if i had a phone as a sony ericsson T616 i wouldn't be so calm). I really like the ringtone composer, and its ringtones because, i can't associate polyphonic ringtones with a mobile phone, but at the same time its monophonic tones sound pretty good and there is one for every personality. i would like an exotic colour for its display .. (green is too common) but it is also nice like that. having the possibility of changing its faceplates.its design could be improved. byee!!

I cannot use this phone as we only have 5 transmitters in the country, 2 maximum working at a time due to lack of power from Nazemagav nuclear power station. Unfortunately we have no diesel for generator in our village so battery life is not long enough. This phone has a lot of modern features such as a display and noise other than the "bring bring" of the bell. It is good and modern. It cost me $895 from man in back street behind embassy. I have had a lot of phones recently because I can't find one I like, until now. Well done Nokia.. Oh and I love the face screensaver, he cheers me up.

After having grief with my Sony Ericcson T-100 (which I had for 2+ months). Under guarantee, I returned it to the store and asked if I could replace it with a brand new Nokia 1100. This phone is basic and simple, without the bells and whistles of a phone that adds on hundreds of dollars more. The battery life is outstanding, taking only 3 and a half hours to fully charge, and after 4 days, it still has a full battery. Overall, this phone has everything I need; txt messaging, long lasting battery, and I can make cheap phone calls oversease thanks to the vodafone network's new low rate offer here in New Zealand. Very gorgeous, and goes well on my office desk!!!!

It was the perfect phone for me... clean design, simple to use, long lasting battery, lightweight and the torch... very handy! However after 4 months it started to loose network reception and the battery was being drained too fast(?) Probably a flaw in the making??? Otherwise a very good solid phone, and affordable!

As most people have said the 1100 is a brilliant phone except of course that the miniscule speaker sounds 'tinny' when volume raised on calls. The 1100 is phone for occasional use due to the poor speaker reception. Reminds me of a Sony mobile phone some years ago now that looked the business but was let down by the poor speaker.

And the red phone key is quite small for my thumb.

I'm very pleased with this phone, it's not a show off model by any means, no camera, mp3 player, etc, but what it does... it does it in solid way. It has the basic features, like contact list, alarm, rapid dial, reminders etc, but it also has some nice added features like screensavers, a LED flashlight (that definitely can come in handy), stopwatch, calculator etc. And the size is very nice, not big but not lighter size either. If you know what you want and don't need or want all those fancy gadgets like a camera, mp3 player, color display, etc., and just want a solid phone that gets things done then i would highly recommend this model. Sound quality and signal are both superb, vibration is good, loud ringtones, just an all around good phone... and oh yes, very little energy consumption, battery life is OUTSTANDING. A cousin had one of those phones loaded with gadgets, but he always seemed to have problems with the sound quality and signal loss....he sold it and got the Nokia 1100, he said "I could do alot of stuff with my old phone, except make or receive calls".

I bought a Nokia 1100 yesterday since it was very cheap and seemed to look better than the similar small phones available. Popular 'Snake II' and 'Space Impact +' games are included. The flashlight is a nice addition that few other phones have. The 1100 is an excellent and reliable handset for people who don't need MMS/email, and the perfect spare phone for people who already have those things.

Low price, which is great for us who break or lose phones too often. For internet a broadbanded computer is better, for an agenda buy a handheld, for a toy buy a playstation. This is just a great phone for us who need to speak. Congratulations NOKIA for this minimal phone !

I recently upgraded my hand set from a Nokia 3310 to the new Nokia 1100. At first, I was a little bit sceptical about trading in my 3310, fearing that the 1100 would be less reliable. But I was quick to realise that the 1100 is in fact a much improved version of the 3310. If you are looking for a basic hand set, the new Nokia 1100 definitely gets the job done. User-friendly features, stylish design, slim outlook and best of all, the silicon keypads. Although not as responsive as the 3310, the keypads are designed to last, especially for those of us who are 'hard key mat punchers', if you know what I mean.

The Nokia 1100 is my second phone after the nokia 2100.Its design is definitely a refreshing change from other Nokia basic handsets; the silicon keymat looks great even though the buttons on the 2100 are easier to press. The 2100 is more user friedly too.The 850 MaH BLC5 battery lasts really long and helps in reducing the overall weight of the phone.Battery life is far better than that of the 2100.But Nokia has made some basic mistakes. The phone book memory is just 50 which is a pity;they should have given at least 100.Polyphonic ringtones,FM Radio,at least 2 MB of internal memory and last but not the least,a 4096 color display would have made this set one of the best entry level color phones. But unfortunately, the Nokia 1100 can at best be classified as a refreshing "BASIC" phone from Nokia.

One thing i don't like is the key menu. i can't help but miss that red phone symbol for easy exit. Also, the Phonebook feature is quite annoying as it does not allow you choices to edit or delete the list, but only gives you only a Call option. If you are not careful or when you have not locked your keypad, your 1100 might make accidental dial. Second, on the phone menu, does not allow Dual SIM feature. Third, the automatic copy to Sent folder is also annoying and time consuming to clean up even using the Erase All option. Fourth, The phone memory is limited to 50 items only, very much unlike the rest of Nokia phones which give 250 phone list. I would hv like the sleek feature and slimness of it all, except for the porr trade-off in keypad menu and phone menu. Nokia could do better than this. If at all, this cellphone is fit for kids.
