Nokia Lumia 710 Review (5 stars)

The Nokia Lumia 710 is a competitively-priced Windows smartphone. Unlike most budget Android phones, this one doesn't cut too many corners when it comes to hardware, so you get a top-performing smartphone for a fraction of the price. It's a solid performer that can beat most mid-range phones hands down. Available in Black, Black/Blue or White.

BlackBerry Curve 9380 Review (4 stars)

A mid-range touchscreen smartphone, and it's a BlackBerry! It's ideal for messaging and social media, and equipped with a good web browser and media player plus a solid range of core apps. The 9380 is a very compact and lightweight phone that does a lot and looks the business too. But a slow processor and underpowered battery spoil the package, and it's not so cheap either.

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 takes the rock-solid Bold 9780 business phone and adds the BlackBerry 7 operating system with its touchscreen user interface. The high-resolution touchscreen plus the superb keyboard make this an ideal phone for all kinds of communication and messaging. A fast 1GHz processor, up to 40GB of memory and outstanding connectivity complete the package. Only the battery life lets it down.

Motorola Droid RAZR Review (5 stars)

The new Motorola RAZR is an ultraslim Android smartphone built from Kevlar fibre. It looks and feels premium, and has the hardware to match. With a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED screen, dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 1780mAh battery, it's ready to take on any of its competitors. You'll be taking a bit of a risk choosing Motorola, but if you enjoy standing out from the crowd you'll find the Droid RAZR to be a very impressive phone.

HTC Explorer Review (4 stars)

The HTC Explorer is a mid-budget Android phone designed for smartphone newbies. It runs a specially modified version of the HTC Sense user interface, designed to run smoothly on the Explorer's scaled-down processor, and made easier to use for Android novices and non-techies. Yet it retains the power of a smartphone, including mobile email, web browsing, facebook & twitter, GPS with Google Maps, a music player, media player and downloadable games and apps from the Android Market.

The Nokia Lumia 800 is Nokia's first Windows smartphone. It's a very capable device, beautifully constructed and making the most of Windows Phone 7.5. With an excellent screen, a fast processor, a good camera and some good apps, the Lumia 800 is a good all-round smartphone, although it doesn't excel in any particular area. Available in Black, Cyan and Magenta.

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a hybrid smartphone / tablet. With a 5.3 inch HD screen and a stylus, the Note has great potential as a PDA-style device. But it also excels in media, games, communications and other apps. In addition to the enormous screen it offers a dual-core 1.4GHz processor, an excellent 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording and up to 64GB of memory.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a showcase for the next generation of Android phones. Running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), this is the most powerful Android phone to date. It also has the best screen ever, with real HD resolution and a mammoth 4.65 inch size. The list of amazing features continues with a 1.2GHz dual core processor, instantaneous photo capture, full HD video recording, 16GB RAM and a whopping 1750mAh battery to power it all. Go. Buy. One.

The HTC Sensation XL gives you a ginormous 4.7 inch screen, Beats Audio customisation and Beats headphones, a very fast 1.5GHz processor and a superb 8 megapixel camera. For music and media it's a very impressive device, but it's too large to be a mainstream mobile, despite its superthin design. Poor battery life is another reason why the XL sadly doesn't quite get 5 stars from us.

The Samsung Galaxy Y is a bargain basement Android phone. With the latest Android 2.3 and a decent 800MHz processor on board, the Y has plenty of potential, but the too-small LCD display, terrible camera and built-not-to-last feel make it a poor choice.

The Samsung Galaxy W is a solid mid-to-high-end smartphone. Running Android Gingerbread, it's key features are a high resolution 3.7 inch display, a very fast 1.4GHz processor, plenty of memory, a good battery and all the usual smartphone gadgets and widgets. A safe buy and good value for money.

HTC Radar Review (4 stars)

The HTC Radar is a mid-range smartphone running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango). Crafted from a single piece of aluminium, the Radar has more of a premium feel about it than most phones, but in most respects it's competent rather than outstanding. A good camera and music player are worth talking about, as is Bing Maps and the integration with facebook and twitter. But with a middle-of-the-road processor, no memory card slot, no Flash support and questionable Bluetooth reliability there are too many issues for us to wholeheartedly recommend it.

HTC Titan Review (4 stars)

The HTC Titan runs Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) and has the largest screen of any mobile so far, at 4.7 inches. That's enough to grab our attention, but the Titan also has a lightning fast 1.5GHz processor to support Windows multi-tasking, a superb 8 megapixel camera with HD video, great music support with Zune HD, and a whopping 1600mAh battery to power it all. At the same time, Mango still isn't perfect, there's no memory card slot, and the web browser doesn't support Flash.

The Sony Ericsson Arc S is an update of the Arc. A stunningly beautiful slimline phone with curves to die for, the Arc S is physically the same as the original Arc, but brings a faster 1.4GHz processor and a software update. The Arc S runs the very latest Android 2.3.4, plus some minor updated to Sony Ericsson's user interface customisations. Apart from the looks and the fast processor, highlights of the Arc S include the large touchscreen with BRAVIA engine and Reality Display, the 8 megapixel camera, HD video recording, GPS with Google Maps, Sony Ericsson music player and outstanding connectivity including a HDMI socket for connecting to a high definition TV.

HTC Sensation XE Review (5 stars)

With the Sensation XE, HTC have taken their flagship phone and turned the dials to max. Its dual-core processor runs faster than a CERN neutrino, its monstrously big 1730mAh battery is the biggest we've ever seen in a mobile, and Dr Dre has been called in to add his Beats Audio (TM) software and headset for outstanding music quality. But it still won't knock Samsung's Galaxy S2 off the top slot.

Apple iPhone 4S Review (5 stars)

The Apple iPhone 4S looks the same as the iPhone 4 on the outside, but there's a lot going on inside. First, that antenna has been replaced, so the grip of death should be a thing of the past. There's a shiny new operating system, a new 8 megapixel camera with full HD video recording, a dual core processor and iCloud. Siri, the voice-activate intelligent assistant makes its debut too, after several years in development. Despite the lack of physical changes, in particular to the 3.5 inch Retina display, which is dwarfed by Android and Windows competitors, the 4S could prove to be much more of a leap forward than some commentators have imagined.

A gorgeously thin BlackBerry, with a very high quality feel, and the benefit of a full QWERTY keyboard and optical trackpad. The 9360 comes with BlackBerry 7, which integrates facebook and twitter into the communications hub of the phone. Features like GPS, a camera, web browser and media player are present, although they're no match for Android or an iPhone. Battery life is a disappointment.

The SE Xperia ray is a stunner! If you prefer your smartphones to be slim and lightweight, you'll love the ray. It's one of the smallest smartphones available, yet it's also very powerful. While the LCD display is only 3.3 inches across, it has a very high resolution and beautiful colour reproduction thanks to Sony's Reality Display and BRAVIA technology. Inside is a 1GHz processor plus 512MB RAM, making it speed along nicely. It's powered by Android 2.3 and Sony Ericsson's Timescape, which integrates social media such as facebook and twitter into the core operating system. With an 8 megapixel camera, HD video recording, Google Maps and excellent battery life, there's nothing to dislike about the ray.

The Blackberry Torch 9810 combines the benefits of a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard with a touchscreen user interface. The new BlackBerry 7 OS delivers the core business and communications strengths of all Blackberries, updated for the facebook age. The hardware is first rate, with a very fast 1.2GHz processor and 8GB of built-in memory, plus a microSD memory card slot. Connectivity is first-rate. Battery life is excellent. There's HD video recording, GPS and a good media player. Perhaps the only feature to dislike is its weight.

The C2-02 is a touch-and-type phone with a slide out keypad and a touchscreen. Combining the best of both worlds is a good concept, but the implementation is poor, with a small resistive screen making the user interface hard work. There are some good features, such as facebook & twitter apps, Nokia Maps, a music player and FM radio. But the phone is dual band only, so accessing the internet is very slow. The camera is poor, there's no GPS and the onboard memory is pitiful.

The HTC Salsa is a phone designed for facebook. It's a nicely-made, solidly built phone running Android 2.3 and HTC Sense. Battery life is very impressive, and there's a front-mounted VGA camera for video chat. On the other hand, the screen isn't the best by a long way, and the processor and memory are decidedly mid-range. We feel it's a nice phone that's been overpriced for what it does.

The BlackBerry Torch 9860 may be a hybrid between a business phone and a consumer device, but it's 100 percent touchscreen! Using a capacitive TFT display, the user interface responds nicely to the finger, thanks to a rocking 1.2MHz processor and the Liquid Graphics engine. The BlackBerry 7 operating system works well on the big screen, and there's the safety of an optical trackpad for added familiarity and ease of use when working with menus. Messaging is first class, with familiar BlackBerry functionality, plus integrated facebook and twitter. The 5 MP camera and HD video camera work well, the web browser isn't half bad, despite lacking flash, and GPS is present too. Memory and connectivity are excellent, but the battery seems to be underpowered for a device of this type.

We like many features of the Xperia Neo. It's a good smartphone, running Android 2.3. Things to like include its outstanding 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording, a high resolution 3.7 inch display, a fast 1GHz processor, the WebKit browser and excellent connectivity. Yet it's over-priced for what you get. The build quality isn't the greatest, the 3.7 inch screen size isn't really top-end, and the battery life is pants. We're left wanting more, so 4 stars is all we can muster for the Neo unless the price comes down significantly.

It's an ultra-compact smartphone running a carefully modified version of Android 2.3 to enable smartphone functionality to be accessed on a petite 3 inch display. Despite its tiny dimensions, it packs in full smartphone functionality and runs well with a fast 1GHz processor, up to 32GB of memory, fast HSPA 3G data access and assisted GPS.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is the best BlackBerry ever! Bigger than previous Bolds, it benefits from a larger keyboard and a better screen. The screen is touch-sensitive too, and the new BlackBerry 7 operating system works very well. Backed up by a fast 1.2GHz processor, 768GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in memory, the Bold 9900 has everything a business workhorse needs, including BlackBerry's peerless messaging and security.
The Nokia X7 is an expensive smartphone, but it offers poor value for money. Running the Symbian Anna operating system, which isn't our favourite and is destined to be dumped by Nokia, the X7 suffers from a low screen resolution, slow processor, inadequate memory, a mediocre camera and an average battery. It looks and feels premium, but it just doesn't deliver.

The Nokia E6 is a high-end smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen user interface, running Symbian Anna. With rock-solid build quality and many strong features, the E6 is more than a match for the likes of BlackBerry. But the impending demise of Symbian is a black mark against the phone. Nevertheless, the E6 has a lot to recommend it, including its high resolution capacitive touchscreen, 8MP camera with HD video recording and a secondary camera for video calling. The inclusion of 8GB of onboard memory is a big bonus and the battery life is exceptional.

The LG Optimus 3D is the world's first smartphone with a glasses-free 3D display. Capable of playing 3D games, displaying 3D youtube clips, taking 5 megapixel 3D still images and recording 3D video in 720p HD, the Optimus 3D is at the beginning of a 3D trend that will sweep across the mobile space in the next few years. As well as its 3D capabilities, the phone has a fast dual-core, dual-memory architecture, an excellent camera, GPS navigation, and outstanding memory and connectivity. Despite having a large battery, its battery life is challenged, and it's also a large and heavy handset.

The LG Optimus White is a limited edition of the LG Optimus Black.

The LG Optimus Black is a higher-end Android phone featuring a NOVA display for improved readability in bright sunlight. Running Android 2.2 with access to 150,000 apps, this is a powerful smartphone with a 1GHz processor, fast data access and plenty of battery power and memory. More powerful than mid-range Android phones, yet lacking the speed and features of the latest high-end models, the Optimus Black is worth considering if you're on a budget but don't want to compromise too much.

BlackBerry PlayBook Review (3 stars)

The BlackBerry PlayBook is BlackBerry's first tablet, based on the QNX operating system. With a 7 inch screen supporting multi-touch gesture-based input, the PlayBook is very easy to use, and its powerful dual-core processor makes it very fast at running apps and multitasking. We like the web browser and the fact that the cameras support Full HD 1080p video recording and video calling over Wi-Fi. However, the PlayBook is limited by its lack of 3G and the poor choice of apps. It's best when paired with a BlackBerry smartphone and operating in the business arena.

The Apple iPad 2 is a truly amazing tablet. Equipped with a large 9.7 inch screen, it's big enough to work and play seriously, and the hardware needed to support it is all here: a dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM and up to 64GB of built-in memory. Add to this the polished performance of Apple's iOS 4 and the wealth of built-in and downloadable apps, and we think you'll get more for your money with the iPad 2 than with any other current tablet.

The HTC ChaCha combines a BlackBerry-style QWERTY keyboard with a large 2.6 inch touchscreen. It also has an extra button - a facebook button - that lets you instantly upload photos, videos and other stuff to facebook with one press. You'll always be in touch with your friends if you have a ChaCha, thanks to always-on internet access via Wi-Fi and 3G HSPA. Add to the mix the power of the Android operating system, a high quality camera, video calling, a fast 800MHz processor and plenty of memory, and you've got a winning formula. The ChaCha is a mid-range phone priced at 250 GBP on pay as you go, or available free with free line rental on monthly contract. Similar phones to consider include the BlackBerry Curve 3G and the Samsung Galaxy Pro.

The Atrix is the first Motorola phone we've reviewed since 2009, when the company seemed to have come to the end of the road. But Motorola have bounced back with a range of high-end Android phones and tablets, and the Atrix is certainly an impressive phone. Star features include the 1GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM giving it stellar performance, and also the incredibly high capacity 1030 mAh battery. It also comes with a fingerprint scanner for added security and an optional docking station, turning your cell phone into a laptop computer. But it's a very expensive product and with a 4 inch display and an old version of Android it misses out on being the very best.

Samsung Galaxy Fit Review (5 stars)

At last! A budget phone that brings the true power of Android to the under-100 pound market sector. Unlike previous entry-level smartphones, the Galaxy Fit doesn't sacrifice too much to meet the budget constraints. The screen is a nicely-sized 3.3 inch capacitive display, which is quite big enough for the job, although the resolution of 240 x 320 pixels does mean that some apps will run awkwardly. The 600MHz processor is quite fast enough to power a device of this size and the 1350 mAh battery is more than sufficient. A built-in memory of 160MB is generous for a phone so cheap, and you can extend this with a microSD card to 32GB if desired. Add a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, Social Hub, fast 3G data access and excellent connectivity and you have a phone that delivers the true Android experience but without breaking the bank.

LG Optimus Me Review (3 stars)

The LG Optimus Me is a budget Android smartphone running Froyo (Android 2.2). It's very similar to the Optimus One, which we reviewed previously, and it isn't obvious what unique proposition the Optimus Me brings to the table that the Optimus One didn't. They're priced pretty much the same, yet the Optimus Me suffers from the same compromises as the Optimus One: a small touchscreen, slow processor and lack of onboard memory. In fact, the screen size of the Me is even smaller than the One - just 2.8 inches, which really isn't enough for a touchscreen smartphone. It's hardly any bigger than the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini, but without the compact form factor. Heavens, even the good old LG Cookie had a 3 inch screen! Back to the drawing board with this one, LG!

The Nokia E7 is a solidly built phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a large AMOLED screen. This makes it large and very heavy indeed, so it will have limited market appeal from the start. But for those looking for a good keyboard, this is an excellent one. The real problem with the E7 is its outdated Symbian 3 operating system, shortly destined for the scrap heap. Compared with the iPhone or with Android it just isn't good enough. The camera too lacks autofocus, and the battery is underpowered for a device of this type.

The HTC Sensation is HTC's flagship phone for 2011. With a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, it's a match for the Samsung Galaxy S2. It's not a small phone, and weighs in at 148g with its premium metal unibody, but it has a premium feel and the large footprint makes space for a huge 4.3 inch touchscreen display with qHD resolution and Super LCD technology for a brighter screen with better contrast. The camera is rated at 8 megapixels and has autofocus and flash. It's capable of recording video at Full HD 1080p resolution and has a secondary front-facing camera for video calling. Other features include fast web browsing, GPS with Google Maps, a fully featured media player with smooth video playback and hi-fi audio quality. A good choice if you want a simple phone with the ability to access facebook and twitter. The fast 3G HSPA connection helps, as does the Wi-Fi. The C3-01 is pretty basic in other respects, but has a decent music player with FM radio and headphone socket, plus a 5 megapixel camera.

The HTC Wildfire S is a straightforward upgrade of the best-selling budget Android phone, the HTC Wildfire. The Wildfire has been given a style makeover with a new metallic body that actually weighs less and is more compact than the original. The screen size is unchanged at 3.2 inches, but the number of pixels has been increased, fixing the main flaw with the first Wildfire. The 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus is unchanged, as is the media player and assisted GPS capabilities. The processor speed has been increased slightly to 600MHz and the available memory is greater, but mystifyingly the battery is smaller, meaning that most users will have to charge their phone every night.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is the first Samsung phone to be powered by a dual-core processor. The 1.2GHz Samsung processor enables superb graphics for games and Full HD video recording, but it isn't the only highlight. The 4.3 inch second-generation Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen is equally impressive. An 8 megapixel still camera with autofocus and LED flash isn't too shabby either. 21Mbps internet access via HSPA is also ground-breaking, as is the 1650 mAh battery that powers the device. You want more? At 8.49mm, it's the thinnest smartphone in existence and it also runs the latest Gingerbread release of Android and version 4 of the TouchWiz user interface. Amazing!

The LG Optimus 2X is most notable for being the first of the new wave of phones to have a dual-core processor. The Nvidia Tegra 2 processor at its heart makes it lightning fast at every activity, especially graphics-hungry video display. It's the first mobile to be able to record and playback video at full HD 1080p resolution. The still camera can shoot at 8 megapixels and has autofocus and an LED flash. The Optimus 2X is great for web browsing, making full use of graphics acceleration to play flash videos and youtube clips. The large 4.0 inch display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution features pinch-to-zoom functionality for zooming into web pages. Powered by Android 2.2 in its initial release and with customisation to the user interface from LG, the phone is as easy to use as it is powerful, and is highly recommended.

The Desire S is HTC's second Android phone of 2011, and is an update of the top-selling HTC Desire smartphone. Evolutionary in nature, the Desire S takes everything that was good about the Desire and adds some incremental improvements. Physically, the plasticky body of the Desire has been replaced by a strong but light aluminium unibody, giving an aura of quality and enabling the phone to become lighter and slimmer. The software has been updated to Gingerbread and a new version of HTC Sense. More memory has been added. The camera is now able to record video at HD 720p resolution, and a secondary front-facing camera makes video calling possible. All things considered, this is a significant enhancement of a very popular model and is a worthy upgrade for existing Desire users. But it's no longer top dog in the crowded space of high-end smartphones.

The Sony Ericsson Arc must surely be the best Sony Ericsson phone ever, and one of the best Android phones too. It's the thinnest smart phone currently available, and looks great in Midnight Blue or Misty Silver. The name Arc describes the shape of the phone, with its curved rear side tapering to just 8.7mm in the centre. But its beauty is more than skin deep. Unlike previous Xperia phones, the Arc has an up-to-date version of Android. It runs the very latest version 2.3, nicknamed Gingerbread. It has one of the best screens of any current mobile and uses Sony's BRAVIA technology for near-perfect rendering of videos. A 1 GHz CPU and fast HSPA and Wi-Fi mean that it's superfast at evrything it does and the large 1500 mAh battery supplies plenty of power. Other top features are the 8.1 megapixel camera with HD video recording and the assisted GPS with Google Maps. Only the limited onboard memory fails to impress.

But it's missing out on high-end features like HD video, and it can't compete against the best Android phones.

The C5-03 is another uninspired Nokia smartphone running the old Symbian operating system. With its unresponsive resistive touchscreen, poor camera with fixed focus, no flash, lack of adequate memory and no Wi-Fi, it serves as a sad example of everything that's gone wrong with Nokia. Available in Graphite and Green.

HTC Incredible S Review (5 stars)

The Incredible S is the first HTC phone of 2011, and the first in the new line up of S phones announced in Barcelona on 15 Feb. Despite its name, the Incredible S is quite conservative, bringing nothing revolutionary, but filling the gap between the HTC Desire and the HTC Desire HD. The Incredible S has a spec that is mid-way between these two phones and would be an excellent upgrade for current Desire owners.

Samsung Galaxy Europa Review (5 stars)

The Samsung Europa GT-I5500 is a budget Android phone that manages to avoid cutting too many corners. Its best features are the Social Hub, integrating contacts, calendars, facebook, twitter and email, plus access to many thousands of Android apps, many free. The Europa also comes with AGPS with Google Maps, a digital music player, FM radio with RDS, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a powerful battery. The screen may be smaller than other Android phones, and the camera pretty basic, but when you compare the Galaxy Europa with other phones at this price, we think you'll be very impressed.

The Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is a new style of phone with both a touchscreen and an alphanumeric keypad. Although it's a resistive touchscreen and quite small (for a touchscreen), it's certainly a lot better than not having one, and we think that it's a real asset. The X3-02 is incredibly lightweight and thin too, and will slide into the smallest pocket with ease. Yet it manages to pack in a fully featured music player and radio, lightning fast internet access and Wi-Fi. The camera's average and we'd have liked more memory, but overall the X3-02 gives you a lot for your money.

The Samsung S5250 Wave 525 is the cheapest phone so far to use the Samsung Bada OS. Samsung's Bada platform allows mobile users to simply and easily download applications from Samsung Apps. The phone uses the latest version of Samsung's user interface, TouchWiz 3.0. The new Social Hub has been designed from the ground up to seamlessly integrate all major email providers, IM and social networking services such as Yahoo, MSN, Twitter, Facebook and MySpace.

Normally we don't like phones with silly characters in their names, because they cause us all kinds of technical problems. But it's easy to forgive the Samsung Ch@t because it's such a cutie. Although it retails for just 50 pounds or so, it looks like a high-end handset, with its ultraslim form factor, full QWERTY keyboard and metal detailing. The QWERTY keyboard plus the optical trackpad make it brilliant for typing, whether you use it for texting, emailing, facebook or twitter. There are plenty of other features too, including an FM radio, with the ability to record from the radio, a music player, a memory card slot, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity and a decent battery life. The camera is very basic, but for the price it's just what you'd expect. This is definitely one of the best entry-level phones that we've ever reviewed.

LG Optimus One Review (4 stars)

Being a budget smartphone, the LG Optimus One inevitably compromises on certain features, but overall delivers a nice package for the money. It's one of the cheapest Android phones available, and this shows up in features like the primitive camera, small display and slighly underpowered processor. But on the positive side you get fantastic GPS functionality with Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation. You get a brilliant web browser with fast internet access. You get Facebook and Twitter apps, plus thousands more apps available for download. You get outstanding battery life, Wi-Fi, a headphone jack, and a memory card slot. And you get all this on some of the cheapest contracts available. Can't be bad.

We're mega-impressed by the new Google Nexus. While it may appear to be little more than a revamped Samsung Galaxy S, that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy S was an amazing phone, and the addition of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) plus a camera flash make it an even better phone. It's certainly a much more mainstream offering than the original Google Nexus One and it's a good choice for anyone looking for the best that smartphones can offer in 2010/2011.

The HTC Mozart is a Windows 7 smart phone. Smaller than the other Windows 7 phones that we've reviewed previously, the Mozart defines itself by offering enhanced audio quality and an improved camera with 8 megapixels and a bright xenon flash. Whilst smaller than the HD7, it still offers a good sized 3.7 inch high resolution display and has 8GB of built-in memory, a fast 1GHz processor and all the usual array of smartphone features. The range of apps for Windows 7 is nothing like the abundance of iPhone apps, but core business and productivity tools are all present.

The HTC Desire Z is like the original Desire, but with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard attached. End of review! But seriously, that's what it is. The keyboard is a huge bonus in our opinion, but it does add considerably to the weight and bulk of the device. Elesewhere, the Desire Z is very similar to the original Desire, with only slight variations in spec. Apart from the size of the phone, the only problem that we found is the battery life, which will be about a day for many users.

Samsung's first Windows Phone 7 effort is impressively good. The Omnia 7 has much in common with the Samsung Galaxy S, including the outstanding 4 inch Super AMOLED display. It ticks all the usual smartphone boxes, including a 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash, 720p HD video recording, music player, FM radio RDS, GPS and web browsing with Internet Explorer 7. Connectivity is good with fast 3G data access a strong point. behind the scenes, the fast 1GHz processor is up to the job and the 1500mAh battery is as big as it gets in the phones world at the present time.

The BlackBerry Bold 9780 is an upgraded version of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and is our new favourite BlackBerry! With a QWERTY keyboard, TrackPad and full email support, this is the best business mobile around in our opinion. Changes from the 9700 include more memory and an upgraded 5 megapixel camera.

The Nokia N8 is Nokia's latest flagship phone, running the new Symbian 3 operating system. We feel that Symbian 3 succeeds in taking a solid operating system forward decisively into the touchscreen era, although it's following the likes of Android, rather than leading. Still, with hardware this good to back it up, we're not complaining. Highlights must be the 12 megapixel camera with xenon flash and autofocus, plus the HD video recording with high quality stereo sound. Other good features are the battery life, GPS with free turn-by-turn navigation and the connectivity options, including HDMI and Bluetooth 3.

The BlackBerry Torch is RIM's latest flagship phone. It's the first phone to use the new BlackBerry 6 OS, and also has a completely new form factor: a touchscreen plus a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. We like the new OS, and we like the slide-out keyboard. The touchscreen is a big improvement on the touchscreen of the Storm and Storm2. The Torch packs in a 5 megapixel camera, aGPS, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, expandable memory and excellent battery life. There's a lot to like about the Torch, but it's an expensive phone and can't compete with other top-of-the-range mobiles when it comes to screen size and processor power.

The X8 expands the Sony Ericsson Xperia range of Android smartphones with a mid-range offering positioned between the X10 and the X10 Mini. Think of it as an X10 Mini with a larger screen and you won't go too wrong. The X8 has a decent-sized screen and a larger battery, so it avoids the worst pitfalls of the X10 Mini, but it lacks the super-compact form factor of the Mini. Unfortunately the camera has been downgraded and it still runs Android 1.6, which is now looking increasingly out of date compared with rival Android phones from HTC and Samsung.

The Monte is the latest touchscreen phone running Samsung's TouchWiz user interface. It's a budget phone, but offers a great deal. The Monte is a tactile phone with a responsive capacitative screen and plenty of widgets for easy access to facebook, twitter, youtube and the BBC iPlayer. It also offers AGPS with Google Maps and Latitude, 3G, Wi-Fi, 200MB of memory plus a microSD card slot, and exceptional battery performance. Weak points would be the camera, which lacks autofocus and a flash, and the lack of a virtual QWERTY keypad. But when you consider the price, we think that the Monte is an outstanding buy.

But the small screen size and poor memory limit its usefulness as a smartphone. Lacking a touchscreen user interface and with below average battery life, it isn't a phone that we can highly recommend, and we also have doubts about its reliability.

However, if you take into account that it runs Android 1.5 instead of the latest version 2.1, plus the fact that its camera and display are at best average, it really doesn't compare to the best Android phones that are available now in 2010.

Samsung Omnia Lite Review (4 stars)

The Samsung Omnia Lite is a cut-down version of the Omnia 2. Running Windows Mobile 6.5, the Omnia Lite has plenty to offer, including a good web browser, fast internet access, aGPS and WiFi. On the other hand, the screen is relatively small for a Windows smartphone, the camera is poor and there isn't really enough memory either. The Omnia Lite seems to be more expensive than it ought to be, and it isn't our first choice of smartphone.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is an upgraded version of the original Bold. It retains the full QWERTY keyboard of the original, but replaces the trackball with a new improved Trackpad, and is smaller and lighter too. It's the perfect device for mobile e-mail, with a high-res screen with user-selectable fonts and the legendary BlackBerry email interface. Other highlights include 3G HSDPA, up to 16GB of memory, WiFi, GPS and outstanding battery life.

The N97 Mini is a "lite" version of the N97 smartphone. The phone is very easy to use, with the twin benefits of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a large ultra-hi-res touchscreen. The use of the word "Mini" is relative, as the N97 is still an extremely powerful multimedia device, with a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, music, video, email, facebook and other apps, and GPS. Connectivity includes WiFi, HSDPA, Bluetooth & USB, plus the bonus of a 3.5mm audio jack. Slimmer and lighter than its big brother, the N97 Mini also seems to have more stable firmware, and feels like a more polished product.

The LG Pop is a super-compact budget touchscreen phone. Despite its small size, it features a large touchscreen display with a fantastic fun user interface. The Pop delivers all the goods that you'd expect in this price range: a 3 megapixel camera, a media player, a stereo FM radio, a web browser, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a memory card slot. Similar in many ways to the massive-selling Cookie, the Pop offers an updated user interface, a more compact design and an upmarket look.

The Samsung Omnia 2 is one of the greatest mobile devices ever! Running Windows Mobile, this is really a mobile office with full email and MS Office functionality, as well as a superb web browser, 5 megapixel camera, DVD-like video recording, video calling, GPS and motion games. It's got a huge 3.7 inch display with the highest screen resolution currently available, and it can connect to just about anything via WiFi, Bluetooth, USB, 3.5mm audio jack and DLNA. It may be big and it may be expensive, but this is perhaps the most powerful smartphone so far released.

In addition it includes a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, video recording, a media player, GPS navigation, WiFi, HSDPA and expandable memory. A range of improvements make the Storm2 easier to use than the original Storm, but the battery life is weak and some users may not like the SurePress touchscreen technology.

But poor battery life, no 3.5mm audio jack and a sluggish response from the user interface mean that it loses a star.

This lets you control and access media content on your PS3 from your Aino using an HSDPA or Wi-Fi connection. It's a powerful multimedia phone with a compact design and good looks.
