Motorola
W220 Review
Phone
rating:
Best buy: On Pay as you Go for £19.95 from the Carphone
Warehouse (choice of black or pink).
The
Motorola W220 is a budget addition to the popular RAZR clamshell
family. Featuring Motorola's now familiar flat keypad with cool
blue backlighting, the W220 is a bargain basement phone with limited
features. There's no camera, no music player and the screen is a
basic colour display with a low resolution. However, there is an
FM radio that can be listened to via the speakerphone, or using
optional stereo headphones. For someone looking for a basic phone
with an attractive design, the W220 could be a good choice. This
is virtually the only clamshell phone in this price range. Be aware
that this is not a superslim phone like the Motorola
RAZR, but it's still compact and lightweight. The closest competitor
is probably the Nokia 2310, which comes
in a traditional candy bar shape rather than a clamshell.
The W220 is an excellent first phone and is cheap
as chips - the Carphone
Warehouse have it for just £19.95 on Pay as you Go in
a choice of colours, including pink.
Features
of the Motorola W220 include:
- Display: CSTN, 65,000 colours, 128 x 128 pixels
- FM radio
- iMelody ringtone composer
- Speakerphone
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS
- Downloadable Games
- Calculator, Calendar, Currency Converter, Alarm
- Web browser
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 8
- Memory: 0.5 Mbytes
- Dual band
- Size: 95 x 47 x 17 mm
- Weight: 93
- Talktime: 500 minutes
- Battery standby: 290 hours

Needed to replace my phone as stolen and just wanted something to
call/ text on! It does lack extras that many phones these days such
as camera, MP3 etc! However I carry my camera and my ipod with me
so I didn't need these! Looks good and seems to work well... Only
had a week so can't comment too much! The only downside is that
it does tend to pick up grease..I have the black so not too bad
but I don't think I would suggest pink or silver for this reason.
Also radio is great!

I found this web site because I wanted to see if anybody else was
suffering the problems that I have. On the whole, the phone performs
excellent and I get over a week between charges even with reasonable
call usage. But it has inexplicably powered down a couple of times
when I have tried to answer a call (really annoying!!); and a couple
of times I have flipped it open to see the message "Enter PIN code",
as though it has done a reset. Since only one of the comments below
hints at anything like these problems, I think I just have a bad
one. Other minor gripe: I sometimes find that the battery cover
starts to slip off by itself. But overall, great for the price.

I have had this phone for several months, and found it to be really
good. Although this phone doesn't have a lot of fancy extras like
a camera or mp3 player they my old phone had, I have found that
I actaully use the fm radio more than I ever used the more advanced
functions on my other phone! The battery life seems fine to me,
it has a nice looking design (several people have commented about
how nice it looks, and are always surprised when they hear how cheap
it is!) It also seems to be pretty robust! It's survived me dropping
it many times. The only downside is that is it rather slow to text
with. If you try to text too quickly then it gets confused and can't
cope. Other than that, I would say that for the price it's really
good, and cheap but stylish phone, then this is a great choice.

Great phone for those looking for a phone to simply make and receive
calls and messages. Motorola has developed a phone for a specific
target audience and it delivers. Solid build quality and good battery
life. It is also small and light. Big, clear text and keypad, which
is great for old people such as my grandmother, who really loves
her W220 I bought for her. Being a flip-phone, it is handy for those
who forget to push a button to hang up or leave the phone in their
pocket/bags and don't realise a button is accidentally pushed (yes,
grandma, that refers to you too). Menus are kept simple although
Motorola still need to work on user-friendliness. It is also rather
sluggish.

For a simple functional phone this is excellent. Good ergonomic
design and pretty much covers the bases for a deecnt basic phone.
I tend to use an ipod for my mp3s and an SLR for my photos, the
lack of extras therefore don't bother me. The long battery life
and ease of use make this excellent. Highly recommended if you just

But i want a phone such as the sony ericsson w810i that can be connected
up to your pc and can play lots of songs. Which is not as expensive
as the nokia 8800.Overall the w220 is a stylish and cool but does

with camera and bluetooth are the type of thing that I look for

and for this purpose the W220 is the best phone I have come across.
The price, size, easy to use menu and battery life are all excellent.
The only thing I have to moan about is the alert tones. You have
only a few preset ones to choose from and they are quiet and short.
Quite often my wife fails to hear a text when it’s in her
handbag or in a public place, It would have been nice to select
one of the many loud ring tones for a text alert. If you want good
looks, simplicity, reliability, this is the phone to go for.

Although this is a basic phone I find I am using it more than my
K1 or N73. I have not used the camera feature on any of my camera
phones nor am I interested in listening to music from a cellphone.
What I want is a phone to be used as a phone and the W220 fits into
this excellently. You can also set the SMS delivery report to be
always "on" which I am surprised is not capable in the K1. For a
basic phone it should be able to have at least a week's standy time
like the Nokia 2610 which is the other phone in this category. I
have always used Moto, Nokia and the old Ericsson phones and find
that generally Nokias have longer standby time while Motos have
clearer and louder voice.

I bought this fone last two weeks and it works very well...sometimes
one specific key is not functioning properly but all you need to
do is to turn off the phone and press it 500 times (lol, that will
make sure no rust or dirt will be in the way when you press the
specific key. Feature wise, this fone is not at far but it has a
decent RADIO and Battery Life. It lasted for about 4 days with minimum
usage. What good about this is that it has looks eventhough it's
inexpensive...I've got it for 5,500 pesos here in the PH. It gets
strong signals and the voice quality is the same as Nokias. Buy
the black one...it looks more professional and people sometimes
think that you are holding a V3...looks can be deceiving...my fone...girls
find it cute and sexy. Buy it...you will not regret it. By the way,
this is my first Motorola fone and find the fonts very unique...they
looked like handwritten and not robotic unlike Nokias and SEs. If
you are on a tight budget and only needs a phone that is reliable
for calling and texting...then go for this one.

The most simple phone i have ever owned, but yet a stylish and modern
phone in looks. I purchased this phone for 30 pounds and i must
say what a deal. I asked myself do i realy need a camera?,do i need
a mp3 player?. Well no you dont; i have often thought a radio would
be good, I have owned all the mp3 players on phones and a few weeks
later a new one comes out. This phone is yet modern and stylish
the led light work lovely. For 30 pounds a great but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a must for all people and with a radio buy buy buy.

got this for £25 pay as you go, and it is a very good phone for
the price. slim, light, nice looks, FM radio, decent battery life.
i am only giving it 3 stars cos i actually wanted a phone with a
speakerphone - and read here that it has one - but as mentioned
below: THERE IS NO SPEAKERPHONE. you also have to plug the headphones
in for the radio to work, and unfortunately it takes a 4-pole 2.5mm
jack so you have to plug in the headphones provided, which is kind
of annoying - anyone know a phone with radio that works without
headphones plugged in and/or takes a 3.5mm jack (or at least just
a 3-pole 2.5 mm jack)

This is a basic phone - you need to think about what you use your
phone for before you buy this, as most of the gizmos are missing.
So: no camera, no mp3, no java, no real external display, no bluetooth
or IR, etc etc. The last phone I had, a Sony W300i, had all those
things and was a great phone but when I thought about it, I rarely
used the camera or the bluetooth or the java stuff, I never used
the mp3 player, and abover all it was bulky (to my mind). I wanted
a small, functional phone that looked stylish and did the basics
well. The good: - It is a lovely looking phone (i have the all black
one - very nice), it is really slim and is barely noticeable in
your jeans pocket. - The battery life seems good. It went 3 days
without needing a charge for me when I was calling for a couple
of hours each day. - It has sensible ring tones! - The call quality
is excellent - several people have noted that I sound clearer then
when I was using the Sony or the Samsung I had before that (all
on t-mobile). - It is very easy to use - none of the stupid Samsung
menu craziness. Still not as good menus as the Sony though. That
was awesome. - and it has that certain "hey, nice phone!" factor
when you get it out in public (oo-er!). very important when you're
as shallow and pointless as me :) - the external display is cute,
with little LEDs that light up when you get a txt msg or miss a
call. Not so good: - the external display cant show who's calling,
so you have to open the flip to see. which means unless you switch
off "open flip to answer" you are going to answer every call, or
reject every call. if you see what i mean... - the display is small
so WAP browsing is a chore, because a few lines of text take up
the whole screen. Overall though I love it. Given the price (I paid
£40 for mine SIM free) it's a great great basic phone. Certainly
the best "simple" phone I've ever owned. I'm almost tempted to buy
another one just to keep as a spare.
