The
Motorola V80 is a great idea, badly executed. It has an original
design and a great specification, but unfortunately is dogged by
a range of problems, and is one of the most unreliable phones in
recent times.
If you like the swivel design of this phone, then
you should consider the Samsung
F210 which is currently available from Dial-a-Phone. Check out
their Samsung
F210 deals.
When
closed, the phone cover hides the keypad to reveal an exceptionally
large colour screen and lights that pulse to the rhythm of MP3 ringtones!
Push the cover gently to the side and the power-assisted rotating
mechanism smoothly opens the phone to reveal the keypad inside.
It's a cool design that, like the slide-up phones made by Siemens
and Samsung enable a large screen to fit within a compact phone
design.
The
screen on the V80 is very good. It's a bright TFT display with 65,000
colours and is very large at 176 x 200 pixels, making full use of
the opportunity that the rotating design offers. The integrated
camera is also high quality, and there are plenty of tools and options
to play with. Light condition settings consist of: Auto, Sunny,
Cloudy, Indoor and Night. There's an auto timer and a choice of
landscape or portrait mode. The digital zoom goes up to 4x, but
image quality degrades when zoomed this much. There's no video camera,
but video playback (with sound) is possible.
Another
nice feature of the V80 is the situational lighting effects, such
as the pulsing external lights that flash in time to ringtones and
music. The lights are placed around the edge of the phone, as well
as backlighting the keypad. Lighting and audio effects can be configured
for different phone events, such as opening the phone. The effect
is quite striking. Other good features include MP3 ringtones for
the most realistic sounds possible, Bluetooth wireless connectivity,
and the integrated handsfree speakerphone.
One
negative point is that the keypad is not the easiest to use. The
buttons are small and spaced quite widely apart, making it fiddly
to use. The V80 is also dogged by a range of reliability problems
and manufacturing faults. If you can find one that works perfectly,
you'll have an outstanding and individual mobile, but otherwise
you may end up like our unhappy reviewers below.
Features
of the Motorola V80 include:
Display: TFT, 65,000 colours, 176 x 200 pixels
Integrated digital VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels,
4x digital zoom)
MPEG4 video clip playback with sound
Polyphonic ringtones & MP3 ringtones
Rhythm lights
MOTOMIXER (Remixable MIDI ringer software)
Downloadable Themes: animated screensavers,
wallpapers and ringtones
User-customisable softkey functions, main menu
and shortcuts
Java games: Hungry Fish, Skipping Stones,
SlideShow, plus space for downloads
Voice-activated dialling
Integrated handsfree speakerphone

I LOVE THIS PHONE!!!! My friend and me were both on Pay as You Go.
We swapped phones for a week I gave my friend my Motorola T720i
which is a fantastic and trustworthy phone (I dont' know why everyone
thinks it is terrible) and he gave me his Motorola V80. FOR A WHOLE
WEEK!!!! IT IS ONE OF THE BEST PHONES IN THE WORLD!!! It has a fantastic
colour screen, an amazing digital camera... there are countless
features. I love the way it twists to close, providing you with
two full size screens!!!! When you close it you have a full size
photo or picture and it is exactly the same when opened. In other
words, double screens. I couldn't stop using the phone that week.
Every time you open it, you discover something new. It looks extremely
stylish when you hold it in your hands too. The thing that would
have made it perfect is if it was a 3G phone. WHY HAVE YOU DONE
THIS TO ME MOTOROLA?? YOU NEARLY MADE A PERFECT PHONE (except for
the Motorola E1000 of course)!!!! Anyways, have no doubts about
buying this phone. It will be like Christmas early! Thanks for taking
the time to read this, Nabz. Any more queries about this phone?

faults include, the menu's could not be accessed on several occasions,
I would turn the phone off then back on and all would work OK. I
couldn't set the alarm clock wouthout restarting it. I found the
reception very poor compared to some of the phones my coleuges used.
The small joystick cover started to tear away (and I do not abuse

as pathetic. the reason I purchased this phone to start with was
I need bluetooth. I ended selling the phone on e-bay when it was

This phone can be very unreliable. My friend is on her 3rd replacement
phone after the other two broke. I however, have had no problems
whatsoever. The flashing lights and mp3 ringtones this phone can
utilise are fantastic. It certainly sticks out from the rest. The
speaker on the phone is very loud and clear. There are many things
about this phone that makes it a cool phone to have. The space on
the phone however, is rubbish. The camera is rubbish, it will not
take photos unless you are in a very well lit area. The reliability
and battery life are rubbish, this phone can be a real let down.
If you're lucky, this phone is very good - otherwise, there are
major faults in the design and it is likely to break. As i have
been lucky, my rating for this phone is ***. Rating:

i think this is a great little phone. its individual it looks good
and has a cool little gimmick. these people who broke there phones
after two months were obviously a little heavy handed with there
phones, ive had it for 5 months and mine hasnt mucked up once. the
only downside i can see for this phone is that it doesnt have video
capture capabilities and its only got 5mb of memory. of course it
comes with the same risks as any flip phone or slide phone (the
cables getting damaged in the mechanism) but these phones have been
tested against this kind of thing and they only break if u r one
of thes people who fidget and continually flip the phone when u
arent using it. also one way to avoid it opening in your bag or
pocket is to get a neck strap or a leather case for it. these will
also stop the damage to the screen, which is inevitable anyway considering
it is on the out side of the phone (much like many non flip phones).
in conclusion this is a great phone if treated properly . if u want
a phone that u can throw around then get a nokia. ive had 3 and
theyve never mucked up (my dad dropped his 5110 in a fishing lake
and it still worked afterwards). Rating:

Now dont get me wrong, this phone is great to look at and you definately
turn heads when you open it, but PLEASE DON'T BUY IT!!! not for
any of the bogus reasons put on here by motorola haters (which i
am not), but for some others. firstly, while everyone says that
the joystick fell off, i'm sure they either have hammers as thumbs
or they're just really stupid. To the people who've been complaining
about the fact that they send replys to messages without meaning
to because it unocks when you receive them - you can put a lock
on the messages easily, so all it does is ask for an unlock code
instead of replying! or get an 02 genie sim cards - 300 texts free
every time you top up a tenner, it doesn't matter if you waste one
or two! People have been saying that the spinning motion doesnt
work properly, thats a load of rubbish. it works fine, the people
saying it are just plain stupid. However, there is one serious design
flaw with the motorola V80: the fact that the screen spins means
that the data cable feeding the screen, cool lights and ear speaker
gets worn out easily and eventually your screen just doesn't turn
on. also, the phone freezes continually after a few months of normal
use. so you may ignore all the haters on this website, but please
don't ignore me. i ignored them and bought this phone last year,
and i've regretted it since. it's a nice looker, but thats all it
is. you want a nice phone, get the new sony eriksson S700i. its
basically the same, but it's got a better camera, it doesn't break,
and more features. it may not have the cool lights, but lets face
it, you'd prefer a phone that actually did what it's meant to, wouldn't
you? Rating:

phone calls being made. i really enjoyed having the phone as it
was quite trendy and no-one else that i knew had it. that was until
the screen broke and i found out how much it was goin to cost me
to get it replace. i went to the mobile repair shop on my local
high street and was quoted £75 -£95 for a new screen
now this is not what i was expecting at all it jus seemed easier
to buy a new phone than pay that amount to get it replaced. also
the green joystick on the front of my phone fell of after about
2 weeks of use now this is not something that i expected from a
brand new phone delivered to me by 02. when i asked o2 about replacing

Im only reviewing this phone as one star because it wont let me
put o!! Since getting it i have had it replaced after 8 days because
of a faulty button. Then i have had problems with the camera (everything
goes blue) and the screen freezes more tha anything. Then the cheap
nasty back panels have started to fall off (one of which completes
the circuit for the loudspeaker)so hence it didnt ring or let me
use hands free. The bluetooth is awful with poor success rates when
tranfering. Perhaps the most rediculous thing about the phone is
that even the "experts" cant fix the problem. As my handset has
been away 3 times (and replaced once) and everytime it comes back
with more problems. So now i have a handset with 3 major faults
but im scared to send it off for repair as i dont think it will

Got this phone when it came out via upgrade ages ago. I love the
design and look of the phone (even after a year or more) but that's
it. If you do buy this phone be aware you will definately have problems.
They may not happen for a few days or maybe a few weeks but they
will come! The most common problem I have is when I open and close
the screen. Half the time it goes off and takes a minute or two
to reboot. The other 'biggy' is charging. I have never known a phone
that is so difficult to charge! If you try and make a call when
it's charging, good luck to ya! Sometimes I can't even switch it
on if its plugged into a socket. The menu system is poor and awkward.
Some features are so well hidden in the depths of the OS that I
am still finding them! Importantly the voice/signal and speaker
are very good and the screen is up there with the newer phones of
today. The bluetooth software is a bit tricky. It does a lot more
than you would think but the software doesn't make it obvious. I
had it 'toothing' my Ipaq so I could send MP3 ringtones to it and
stuff so it's got the connectivity.. in there ... somewhere. It's
not the worst phone I have ever had (Mitsubishi has that honour!)
but it's one of the buggiest for sure! Rating:

Ok, well I have to say when i first bought the phone i loved it.
it looked really fresh and the screen quality is amazing. however,
ive had so many problems with the handset its unreal. First the
screen leaked, so i took it back to carphone warehouse and they
put a new screen on it (thank god for insurance or it would have
been cheaper to buy a new phone.) Then i had problems with the camera
- i either got "busy" messages or the camera wouldnt work at all.
I went back to carphone warehouse again and they replaced it (insurance
claim number 2). Then the screen started to misbehave and the colours
began to fade. I took it back to CW again for phone number 3. Then
i had further problems with the camera, the camera would only display
pink images and anything you took a photo of was in about 300 shades
of pink. Back to carphone warehouse again...they have given me a
v620 to replace my v80. Its a shame, i loved the phone and its got
loads of nice features but its got so many bugs in the system that
i couldnt recommend it to anyone. If you are determined to ignore
the majority of the reviews on the site, which ALL say "dont buy
this phone" then at the very least make sure you buy insurance to
go with it. It should really have only one star but its such an
unusual looking phone that it gets bonus points for appearance.

I thought I would write a review to save anyone the bother of buying
such a rubbish phone! When I first received the phone I was really
pleased with it and the lights gave my phone the nickename, 'The
Party Phone' from friends... that was until later on the same day
I bought it the green joystick fell off. Seems to happen a lot!
So I sent it back the day after receiving it and got a new one sent
back. This must have been faulty too as the button seemed to wobble
a lot, it made me almost too wary to press it too hard! The swivel
function is quite cool but in my opinion it should go 360o I know
thats just nitpicking but I can imagine this phone would be easily
broken by someone trying to push it back the wrong way. The navi
buttons are too thin very difficult to press and the number buttons
are very hard to press as they are indented (especially hard of
you have nails). Bluetooth connection is horrendous. It just doesn't
seem to want to connect to certain handsets/handsfree kits. I think
the fact you can only watch videos and not record them is slightly
pointless. Photo quality is poor, ringtones are hideous. I've had
a similar problem as someone else mentioned where I have sent a
text and it has gone through at least 30 times. Another grumble
I have is if you manage to press send on a text by accident you
can't cancel the send which can be annoying. On one instance my
phone managed to swivel open in my pocket and connect to the internet
which obviously turned out to be pricey! The games are rubbish so
if this bothers you DON'T buy the phone! Writing text messages seems
to be a major ball ache with this phone due to the slowness! A few
times I have set the alarm and it hasn't gone off. My charger managed
to stop working and of course the phone crashes randomly sometimes.
I can be in the middle of a call and the screen will just go white.
As my phone managed to break again and I got my 2nd V80 all seemed
well. Untill it started crashing again. I am very careful with my
phone so I can only blame the design of this model that makes it
so delicate. As somone mentioned the battery low tone is VERY irritating.
It's a very loud annoying noise which goes off almost every minute.
Even when it's in my bag people look about to try and work out what
the loud beeping noise was. Last but not least my phone has managed
to break... AGAIN! This time I can't shut it as the screen doesn't
turn around and it completely freezes up. I don't receive calls
when it doesn't feel like ringing and the backlight won't switch
off. As this is my only phone I am having to keep it open and just
make sure I don't close it as if I do I bizaarly have to take out
the battery and plug in the charger to switch it back on again.
I also had a problem while phoning someone where I couldn't hang
up. Did wonders for my phonebill as you can imagine! I'm usually
not too bothered about my mobile phone but when you have one as
poor as this it is very frustrating. Luckily O2 have agreed to replace
it for me for free, and I should think so too! Rating:

Well, I just bought the phone about less than a week ago. I have
read enough reviews from different users. The phone now works great
for me but I don't know if the phone really rated close to heaven(5
stars) or hell(one star), so I give a three stars. Some people said
the green joystick fell off and some don't. I really don't know
who is right or wrong. Lord, help me if I have made the right choice.
The graphic screen and the camera are great and clear. But my number
one pick for cellular phones are the slide Samsung D500 or Samsung
E630 but they are pricy. I hope my Motorola V80 will last for long
time and not to be in paradise soon. Rating:

This phone may look cool, it my even make you the centre of attention
occasionally however, when it comes to sofware it's the worst phone
I have ever owned, and I have had a few (seimens, nokia and Sagem)
Within the 2nd month of me owning it it started to crash which was
ok as it only did it perhaps once every couple of days max. I didn't
think much of this as I use it a lot and it's never turned off.
However the problem got progressivly worse, the screen would not
rotate, the backlight would not turn on and sometimes the entire
phone would not turn on, no to mention the fact that the phone stopped
responding every 30 seconds or so meaning I had to remove the battery
and start again. The joystick has also lost nearly all it's responsivness
meaning that I have to push it harder and harder to get it to do
anything. The bluetooth function does not seem to detect any nearby
phones. (this was no problem for my friends nokia) I finally got
it sent off to be repaired but judging by the other reviews in this
column I remain doubtful that it will ever work properly. Motorola
should recall this phone and fix the several major errors pointed
out by their customers. Rating:

Would give this phone negative stars if I could. I was initially
delighted with it - it looks great and the functionality is all
there. I did notice that the joystick was occasionally unresponsive.
After three weeks of owning the phone, the joystick was non-existent
- lost in a pocket somewhere. I sent the phone back to motorola
and waited four weeks to have it fixed only for the joystick to
remove itself again within a week. The phone has now started crashing
around 20 times a day - Either freezing when I receive a text (and
please don't get me started on the amount of texts I have accidentally
sent from my trouser pocket) or make a call or breathe next to it
or generally try and use it as a phone. The only resolution to this
is to remove the battery and start again. Oh and the cover's a sod
to get off too. Looking on this site, I can see that the phone is
obviously inherently flawed. I now find myself stuck with a great
looking ornament. Given that the V80 is supposed to be at the top
end of the contract market, I think that it reflects very badly
on Motorola. I have had mobiles since 1993 and I can honestly say
that this is the worst I have ever owned. I will not be buying another
Motorola product. To anybody thinking of buying this model, I can

i still hadnt had it returned after a whole MONTH at Motorola and
without being told where it was it was sent back. another 5 days

many others have said, it crashes every quarter of an hour, the
predictive text is poor, the keypad is small, the rotation feature
is gradually getting worse, it barely locks so every time you push
the joystick right the phone turns round and deletes your text message
or game and the rhythm lights are not sensitive enough at all. I
have to turn my stereo up to 3/4s of the volume to get it to flash

I am in a very mixed review about this phone. On first impressions
its great. The lights are cool looking and the swivel opening function
original. However, after having it for only a month, the screen
broke. Like another reviewer, I was fobbed off in being told that
it was "user damage". I paid. My mistake as after the huge long
repair time, within about 2 weeks the camera packed in and a loose
connection came about. I had to hold the phone a particular way
to prevent the screen from going black! The backlight then went
totally! And to top it off that little green button came off! I
pushed mine back on and luckily, months later, it has not fallen
off. Apart from the constant and costly repairs I had to have, the
phone is not just a worthless purchase. When working, the phone
has great functions. The menu's in my opinion are great, clear,
easy to use and perhaps on par with Nokia. Simple screen illustration
when you get a txt all add to the fun of the phone. However, you

because for those of us in contract its a case of send it away fix

had this phone for about two weeks now. the best features are the
opening mechanism, which is swivel based. You push on the right
hand side and it springs open. its got a very cool lighting effect
where the whole of the front of the phone lights up when you get
a call. as for usability the menus are pretty good, not quite upto
nokia standards, but getting there. One bad point is the keypad
and the text entry. the keypad is a bit small, no good if you have
big fingers. it has a system called itap for predictive text and
its not very good. even when switched off its annoying. its biggest
downfall for me is its inabilty to conect to a pocket pc for browsing
the internet via gprs. it just drops the conection. its definitely
the phone as i use a nokia 6230 with no problems. Rating:
