Motorola V620

Review:
November 2004. Updated January 2005.
Based
on the Motorola V600, the Motorola
V620 is a very highly-specified phone with an integrated digital
video camera, MP3 ringtones and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
Quad band lets you roam globally.
The
main difference between the V600 and the V620 is the addition of
a video recorder and an enhanced internal display with 262,000 colours
instead of 65,000.
The
V620 has the same styling as the V600 except that it comes in a
distinctive black finish and is very slightly larger (and a few
grams heavier). It's a great looking phone, although larger than
most comparable clamshells. The quality of the display is top-notch
and the camera and video recorder perform well. The software glitches
that dogged the V600 seem to have been fixed in the V620, however,
there are widespread problems in getting the V620's WAP and MMS
settings to work. Some of our users have written tips on getting
this to work, so read the user reviews below if you are experiencing
problems with these settings.
Features
of the Motorola V620 include:
- Integrated Digital Camera with 4x digital zoom
and video recorder
- Video Clip playback with sound
- Internal display: 262,000 Colour TFT (176 x 220
pixels)
- External display: 2 Line (96 x 32, Inverse image)
- Event lights
- 22 Embedded polyphonic ringtones (24 voice),
3 MP3 ringtones
- MotoMixer (Remixable MIDI ringer software)
- Downloadable Themes: Animated screensavers, wallpapers
and ringtones
- Java games: Golf (full version), Wakeboarding,
FotoFunPack 2 and space for downloads
- EMS & MMS (Picture / photo + text + sound)
- Instant Messaging Support
- Email: STMP, POP3, IMAP4

web sites. Was in carphone warehouse for hour and a half and they
did not have a clue and denied knowledge of a problem with this
phone?? either lying or stupid. Can receive MMS messages fine but
no one can receive mine. Shows as being sent but they just vanish

I bought this phone a few days ago! Now I've managed to sort the
MMS settings out, I am pleased to say this phone is the best phone
I've ever had. It looks good, feels good and sounds good too. Makes
a change having a polyphonic phone, that one can actualy hear ringing
while it's in my pocket. Camera is ok, but I only ever use it to
add a picture to my contacts. If you want a phone with a camera
that takes very very good pics then this phone isn't for you. Although
the picture quality is better than most VGA cameras. The menus are
very easy to navigate. Writing txts are very easy too. Not keen
on Itap, but then again, I've never really used predictive txt.
But it appears getting used to the Itap would become second nature
after writing a few txts with it. The flashing lights are a novelty
and cause exclamations of wow and cool, from the younger folk when
they see it. As has been mentioned a lot here. The only down side
is, the MMS and Wap settings don't work. If you buy the V620 then
you gotta set it up yourself. But it's worth it in the end. If your
looking for a good well made mobile with ease of use, then this
is the one for you. I would reccomend this phone to anyone. I would
have given this 5 stars if I didn't have to mess around setting
up Wap & MMS.

the message "Page cannot be displayed" on some WAP pages. Especially
o2 pages such as games and chat. Is anyone else having these problems.
I`m on o2 contract. Thanks. Phone is quite good by the way, but
feel it should not have been sold whith all these problems and it
seems it has been superceeded by the V636 already!!

I brought this phone sim free somewhat two months ago now and have
had nothing but trouble.I paid £200. (extremely overpriced
for what you get) As i brought the phone unlocked this meant that
I had to insert my own sim card. Which I used from my old phone.
However I could not send nor receive mms or wap! It took me some
2 months to get this probelm sorted out and now I still can't even
recieve photos!!! I am sick of all this trouble it has caused me.
I shall never be buying a handset again EPSECIALLY not this model!!!

settings from there website direct (setup.orange.co.uk).The closest

Absolutly brilliant phone and extremly stylish also dosent feel
like a toy unlike similar phones like this one I had some trouble
with wap and mms to start of with I took it to my local Orange shop
they were no help at all!!! They basically said that i need a new
sim card (something i didnt want to do because i would lose my get
out there orange package that i bought when it first came out) So
if they try selling you a new sim card then tell them where to go!
because if you go on the orange setup website (http://setup.orange.co.uk)
and get sent the settings for the v635 then it works perfectly on
this phone! hope this helps everyone that is on orange!!!

Carphone Warehouse WAP works with settings from Motorola. To get
photo messaging to work don't forget to get settings and ALSO ask
O2 to turn photo messaging ON with a PICON text to O2. Why oh why
didn't anyone tell me that the day I bought the phone? The info
is in the O2 welcome pack but they didn't give me one. Now everything
works its a great phone, even getting used to the predictive text

With a Virgin PAYG sim - Virgin's web site can send the settings

Great phone. Just got it this afternoon and MMS works a treat (after
some messing around.) Try the following to get MMS to work. Head
into WebAccess > Web Sessions. Use middle menu button to create
a new web session with the following settings - Name: o2 MMS, Homepage:
http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8080, Gateway IP 1: 193.113.200.195, Port
1: 9201, Service Type 2: WAP, Speed (Bps) 1: 9600, Line Type 1:
ISDN, GPRS APN: wap.o2.co.uk, Username o2wap, Password: password
Go into your text message inbox. Use the middle menu button to enter
Message Setup. Go into MMS Message Setup and change the Server Info
to "o2 MMS" or whatever you called your new web session
from above. Job done.

on this website I have to be the odd one out and say I think its
a terrible waste of money. I am in my 40's so probably ancient compared
to some of the posters here. If you are aged 15 - 25 I guess its
ideal. It has loads of useless flashing lights, tinny sounding ring
tones, the colours are the worst I have seen and the predictive
text drove me nuts. Havnt been able to get the WAP or the MMS to

Great phone...but the whole O2 shenanigans is pretty off-putting..I
mean..how long has this phone been out for now? I would've given
this phone 4 stars if the GPRS/MMS settings worked, and it would've
been 5 if it had a memory card slot. And maybe a more user friendly
bluetooth..where "Find Me" is permanently on. Sending a text takes
some getting used to...but it's the same whenever you switch manufacturers.
To the people who are complaining about the video length go to Multimedia
> Videos > Press the Menu key > Scroll down to Video Setup > and
change video length from MMS to Maximum.

I bought this phone SIM free for use on Vodafone. I was particularly
impressed with teh design and styling, as well as the features,
though in my opinion it would have been nice to have had Infra-Red
connectivity included rather than just Bluetooth. I would have given
this phone 4 or 5 stars if it wasn't for a problem that's started
to occur. I was unable to send or receive MMS messages. After spending
an hour on the phone to Vodafone and several attempts to receive
and load the settings, the support guy told me to perform a full
RESET of the handset via the menu option. I did this and hey presto,
MMS now works! BUT...Bluetooth has now stopped working and some
wierd things are happening to the battery display/meter wherby when
the main adapter is plugged in its not showing a full charge (only
1 bar) yet when uplugged it show a full charge. I guess the software's
got itself in a twist. I tried resetting a couple of more time but
to no avail. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi have finally got a genuine cure for the continuing WAP Dial up
(not the GPRS) problem on o2! You need to creat a new profile in
Web Sessions and change only the following fields: Name : O2 Wap
Home Page : http://wap.o2.co.uk **Please note this still does not
work yet as o2 have not yet approved the phone but will do in near
future - but you can enter another address such as google or bbci
for homepage for now** Service Type: WAP Gateway : 193.113.200.195
Port 1: 9201 Timeout : 2mins CSD No1: 91500 Username: o2wap Password:
password Speed: 9600 Line type : ISDN You will be able to access
other wap pages if you have the addresses for them but still cannot
get the o2 homepage!! At lease its a start and hopefully o2 will
sort their problem out soon. The phone is great by the way!

Myself and two friends bought this phone on Saturday 22nd January
2005, on Virgin PAYG, from The Carphone warehouse. The phone itself
is lovely, nice size and weight, with excellent ringtones and picture
quality. However, you try to get the GPRS and MMS to work. We spent
most of yesterday on the phone to Virgin, who were very un-helpful
and basically told us that because they do not do that phone on
their website, they couldn't help us. So we spent 3 hours today,
in Carphone Warehouse trying to get the problem fixed, with no success.
They rang, Virgin, who again were very un-helpful and did not want
to know. They rang Motorola, who said that the person who deals
with this type of problem wasn't in until tomorrow, so we were stuck.
After spending all this time, and having my phone messed with for
3 hours, the camera and video functions do not work, and my wallpapers
do not work anymore. Needless to say, they will be going back tomorrow
for a full refund. We are all really disappointed. I can't see why
they are selling these phones on Virgin and 02, knowing that all
these problems are arising. Oh yes, and Richard Branson? sort your
staff out, cuz their attitudes are disgraceful.

Had the phone for a few days now, 10 times better than my old Samsung
D410 which kept breaking down, so was glad when they couldn't repair
it and gave me the V620 as a freebie. Nokia has the most easy menu
system but the Motorola is all about getting used to it thats all.
The quality of the camera is also very good and much simpler to
use than other camera phones I have had. Overall I am happy and
would suggest this to anybody looking for a new phone, also most
people I know now carry the latest Nokia so its nice to be different!
At first I did have the same problems as most people here but i
then checked out Mike's soloution and hey presto it now connects
fine all you need to do is change the settings below on the O2 option
in the web sessions list. Change Service Type 1 to HTTP and Port
1 to 8080. One thing before I got it to work by using the above
fix I downloaded settings from Motorola website but they didnt work,
now I have a setting in my web sessions list with a padlock next
to it and I can not delete it any ideas how to get rid of this?

Jan 19, 2004 Good phone - I just got it today and was a little disappointed.
Voice quality seems good as are standard phone functions including
speaker phone. No problems with call dropping. Bluetooth headset
works fine. I initially had problems synchronizing with outlook
but i think that was at the PC end with the Motorola software....
no issues with the phone. I must say that the Motorola menus are
the worst. After having used Nokia (6820) and Sonyericsson (T68,
R520) and now the Moto V620, I'm almost tempted to go back to Nokia
or better yet Sony ericsson. Very difficult to find things in the
MotoMenu. The suprising disappointment (at least I did not expect
this) - the phone does not automatically update the clock. I travel
a lot and it's a nice to have to have the phone clock automatically
updated. Since I bought the phone direct-market i.e. not through
the service provider, it did not have a voicemail nuber programmed
in. I entered it and possibly entered it wrong but now I cannot
change it. The menu option to change it is missing. If I'm missing
something and anybody has a way around for my problems let me know.

would talk to each other??? Motorola should make it clear which
networks support this new phone and if they don't yet, when will
this be resolved. Put my daughters Orange SIM card in and that works
fine with download music etc. Even the Motorola website doesn't

Ok. well what can i say about this phone other than .....disapointing.
Im not saying its not a good phone but it definetly should be better.
To start with, only 5mb of space, whats that about and no option
for a memory card. Very poor. Also they really should have sorted
out the gprs now. Its been a while now and there is no excuse why
this should not have been resolved. (not sure if motorola or o2
are to blame). Also there are small slighty annoying features on
the phone. one is that even if i turn my bluetooth power to on,
its still isnt and people can only send me things if i click on
"find me". The bottom row of number buttons also dont work very
well and tend to stick. The only other small problem is the fact
it keeps crashing when i get calls somtimes and refuses to ring.
Also if i set a ring tone to patrticular number its will also play
this if they text me. Quite annoying. Almost slighty more annoying
is the fact that just in feb only about 2-3 months after its relase
motorola are relising a v635 with all these problems sort e.g space
for a memory card and a colour screen on front of phone, but they
havnt even sorted out the v620 problems yet. Anyway is an ok phone
but personally i wish i had stumped up an extra 40quid for the nokia
7610. my friend has one and its reliable, works and has no problems
with it, plus there are plenty of wallpapers and themes to download,

I have managed to get the MMS sorted out so if you are havin any
problems on setting up here is how. Go on web sessions and insert
new entry. Name: o2 PrePay Homepage: http//mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Service type: WAP Gateway : 193.113.200.195 Port: 9201 Time out:
2min User name: Payandgo Password: Password Line type: Modem GPRS
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk Once you have inserted these settings in
web sessions go to your messages and highlight one of your inbox
messages press the menu key and scroll down to 'setup' select MMS
MESSAGE SETUP AND THEN SCROLL TO 'server info: and set as o2 MMS
PrePay Your setting for MMS should now be working. Please contact
me via email if my information was help to you at mfakira@hotmail.com
I am having problems on setting up the WAP i have managed to insert
the settings which was provided from the motorola website on www.motorola.com
they sent me a pin number which i inserted but still i cant get
no connection the page jus displays connection unsuccessful try
again later above this there is two red arrows which i think means

This could be a great phone - it's a shame they decided to sell
a internet ready device that cannot connect to the internet, which
in my book is blatant fraud. 2 stars cos it looks the business.
More to follow perhaps if they can sort out the issues with the
damn thing. For anyone like myself who doesn't know diddly about
mobiles this is a complete rip off (phone the call center...like
that helped). Does anyone know how to send messages out using bluetooth

Hi guys i got this phone for christmas but before i bought it i
read everyones reviwes on this page first and now i have my own
detailed analysis of the phone which i noticed some points people
hadn't mentioned yet. The facts are that this phone looks so good,
very stylish, good quality colour (over 260,000 when most phones
have 60,000), and camera is brill. However i am not happy with the
memory size with only 5 MB. If your into storing long videos then
forget it, because this phone simply can't hold much i could probably
fit 3 full videos that i have taken from my phone (there are two
options to choose from mms size video which is just a few seconds
and u can send it in an mms message or maximum where it goes for
about 20 seconds but is too big to send in an mms. i was also disappointed
that this phone didn't have an mp3 player but the fact is it would
only really be able to hold 1 song because of the memory and the
fact it is a clam phone, probably doesnt have the space to hold
an mp3 player in it anyway. although it doesn't have an mp3 player
it plays mp3 ring tones and you can actualy play mp3 tunes if u
can get it transferred to your phone, my friend transferred a song
to it through Bluetooth on his PDA but after that it was like 92%
full, lol and i had to delte my videos to fit it on there. As i
said not enough space. Also alot of people have complained about
setting up mms. i had the same problem but what made it even harder
was that the 02 network for mms had crashed over christmas so no
one could send them. seeing as this phone came with no settings
at all (which is totally stupid) then you should go to your networks
local shop. i'm on o2 and i went to their website and set the settings
for a different phone but it still worked for the v620. My final
conclusion is that i'm glad i bought this phone, colours and camera
is great i really love it i just wish it had more space on it apart
from that it looks great and is easy to use when you have used it
for a little while. More space would of give it 6 out of 5 muaha.
thanx, gav

Just bought the Motorola V620 as a replacement for my Nokia 6260,
which I sold. I can honestly say I prefer the V620! It feels much
more solid and well constructed than the Nokia, with a better quality
camera and screen. I can't fault this phone so far (but it's still
early days), although if I want to be picky the 0 (zero) key is
a little bit hard to push due to the lip underneath it. Without
the aerial this phone would be nigh on perfect, IMHO. I like the
size and shape of this handset much more than my old Nokia 6260,
which really was a bit of a brick. Fair enough it had the features
of a small PC, but in reality you never really use half of them.
I mean a VPN client! get real. So, in conclusion, a great quality
phone which should meet all the needs of 95% of people.

look, i just want to say where you ALL CAN SEE that there IS, i
repeat THERE IS a way to have multiple numbers or phonebook entries
UNDER ONE NAME. PRIMARY CONTACTS. find that in the settings, and
then when you're in the phone book, you just hit left or right to
see the different numbers. i have 3 different work numbers in my
phone, ALL UNDER ONE NAME. it doesn't say my company's name 3 times.
only once. this is on all of the v series phones. i am SICK of reading
about people complaining about this when it says in the manual how
to change it!
