Motorola
V3X Review
Phone
rating:
The
V3X is the 3G upgrade to the super-slim Motorola
V3 RAZR. Although at 20mm it's not as thin as the 14mm V3 RAZR,
it's still one of the slimmest 3G phones around. It looks very similar
to the RAZR too, although there's more plastic used in the build.
It's a good-looking phone, designed to look good and turn heads.
It's heavier than the RAZR, but not heavier than comparable 3G clamshell
phones.
As
well as looking good, the V3X has a much higher specification than
the original V3. The new features include 3G functionality, including
video
calling, music and video downloads, and streamed TV. The camera
has been upgraded from 0.3 to 2.0 megapixels and a video camera
has been added, with a high resolution (640 x 480 pixels). There
is also an MP3 player, supporting
MP3, WMA and AAC+ formats.
Another
new feature is speaker-independent voice recognition, making handsfree
use very easy.
The
memory has been upgraded to support a TransFlash memory card. Currently
TransFlash cards are available at up to 512 Mbytes. This is enough
to store around 150 MP3 songs.
Bluetooth connectivity is supported, with support for stereo sound
with the Motorola Bluetooth Stereo Headset. Battery life is quite
good compare with other 3G phones.
Minor
problems with the V3X are the less than perfect audio quality, and
the fact that there are unprotected camera buttons on the side of
the phone. In common with other 3G phones battery life and network
coverage are not as good as 2G phones. The V3X has now been superseded
by the Motorola RAZR V3XX.
Features
of the Motorola V3X include:
- 3G video calling
- 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, LED
flash and macro mode
- VGA video camera (640 x 480 pixels)
- Windows Media Player supports MP3, AAC+, MPEG4,
WMV, WMA and Real Video/Audio files
- Main display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 240 x 320
pixels
- Speaker-independent voice recognition for handsfree
use
- MP3 ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS,
Email (POP3, IMAP4, SMTP)
- 3D Games
- Connectivity: Bluetooth
- Memory: 62 Mbytes with TransFlash card (max
512 Mbytes)
- WAP 2.0 browser, GPRS class
10
- Size: 99 x 53 x 20 mm
- Weight: 125g
- Talktime: 131 minutes
- Video calling: 90 minutes
- Battery standby: 227 hours

For people to say this is a bad phone is completely unbelievable.
I've worked in the industry now for almost 6 years and have seen
many phones come and go. Motorola, for me have until recently, been
the weakest link when it comes to user friendliness, and popularity.
The initial V3, although immensely popular, was quite frankly a
pants handset. The V3i was the phone the V3 should have been originally.
But the V3x breaks the mould!! Over the years, I've used Nokia (yawn,
yawn), samsung, panasonic, and sony ericsson phones. The V3x is
THE best handset I have ever used. The size isn't an issue if you
have big hands like me. It's still one of the smallest 3g handsets,
only beaten by the new Samsung Z510i which is a little slimmer.
The flip is as sturdy as they come, the screen is fantasti quality
with the clearest colour and clarity you will see on any handset.
The menu system is as easy as any Nokia/Samsung/ blah blah blah
to use. The speech recognition is a bit of a pig to use, but in
all honesty I was never likely to use it anyway. It is just a glorious
handset to use and own. The real winner for me is the stereo bluetooth.
I've got a pair of the stereo headphones and they are fantastic!!
They link/disconnect automatically when you switch them on and off,
and if your listening to them and get a call, they interupt the
music, let you make the call, and then continue the music when the
call finishes. What a fantastic accessory from Motorola. The battery
life yes isn't brilliant, but all you have to do is switch of the
3g capabilities (which let's face it, who uses anyway?) and this
will double the standby time. I charge my phone twice a week maximum
and I use it everyday for both cal usage and MP3 player. I've got
8 cd's on the 512MB card and have still got over 100MB of space
on the card. All I do to get the tunes on is record a CD onto Windows
media player, stick the memory card into a card reader (£10-£20)
and drag and drop a whole album across. You can get a complete CD
onto it in under 15 minutes. I've gone on for far to long now, so
quite simply, if you're in the market for a mobile phone, you couldn't
do much better than getting your grubby mits on a V3x.

it although it is bulky. Now though, its different story. There
is no voice recordr which is annoying. Predictve text doesnt let
you change a word wihout deleting the whole thing and typing it
again. The battery barely lasts over a day The is no flash - just
a light, which makes things look blue Its heavy and uglier by the
day. I wouldnt recommend this phone. I'm swapping it, just have
to decide what to. I used to have a Sharp GX20. Which was the best
phone i have ever had. Had it for two years and dont have a single

It's probably one of the best looking phones around!!! But flip
the phone open and its a whole different story once you begin to
use it. The battery barely lasts over a day from being fully charged.
And a high-pitched noise is omitted from the speaker when open.....exceedingly
iratating. The memory is good though and the camera quality is excellent
however. I'm struggling along with it, but much more noise from
it and i'm binning it!!!

Well ive been using this phone for 2 weeks now. IVe done my full
homework on this phone and being a software engineer, im analytical
by profession. I hope it will help you in deciding. Well to quickly
sum up, it is not the perfect phone but its truely unique. The problems
that people mention about it do exist but they are only on the phones
that are customized by the network. Unfortunately, that means that
3, Voda and Orange. All of them mess about with the phones softeare
so they install thier versions. This phones runs on a Linux operating
system so its quite a sophisticated piece of kit. The networks took
a big risk by putting thier software on it which has totaly ruined
the generic version. Thier technical teams seem to just have 'slapped
on' thier network software based on old Motorola protocols. Basically,
they did not work on the original Linux platform. Not to get to
technical now. If you want one that will work realy good, get it
on O2 as they are selling it with original software, and, the O2
ones are made in Germany as opposed to Singapore for the other networks.
The German ones enjoy bay far better quality assurance & monitiring,
and, use more reliable components instead of the cheaper asian ones.
However, stay well away from Vodafones version. I had a look at
it in the shop and wanted to scream 'what have u done??!!' They
have taken customization to another level all together. Even the
grey build quality is awfull and different in material to other
networks. If you have already purchased it on networks besides O2,
then its not all doom & gloom. You can get it unlocked and debranded
for about £25-just look in Ebay or Google and you'l find people
who can do it. One guy of true brilliance i recommend is based in
London where you can see him in person. Look for the keyword 'king'
and thats as much a hint i can give you. Word of advice though,
debranding your phone means you'l loose your one year warranty!
The camera is excellent for a phone and the macro mode is particularly
impressive where shots of text or close up come up with remarkable
detail. The voice recognation software is quite advanced and you
can say the name without 'training' it and it will recognise it
9 times out of 10. Call quality is superb and crystal clear. I do
recommend this phone but go for the O2 version or a generic sim
free one.

Ok, we all know the battery life on the V3 is rubbish, well just
not to feel left out, the V3X is exactly the same. After speaking
to my network provider they said it was running low because I was
using it??? errr, right... Menu's are a pain to navigate through,
especially if you have the Orange Toolbaron the main screen. If
you do have this, it will by-pass and security settings you have
and go straight to the desired program? I have had mine for 2 weeks.
It has crashed twice and needs charging every night. Also the shortcut
buttons on the sides are a pain as you keep pressing them while
on calls or when it is in your pocket. Am selling this 'upgrade'
and going for either a Samsung D600 or a Nokia 6270/6280. Oh, and

up and the V3X sends you back to the background screen. Battery
life is poor, you cannot enable the speaker during a call, the key
lights wont re-illuminate once they have gone out. The centre button
is erratic, the last number redials works intermittently, And oh
yes Vodaphone Germany sucks as a provider haven’t got a clue

have a plastic exterior - but it certainly doesn't feel cheap -
feels much more expensive than say the Nokia N70. Yes, the interface
is never going to be as good as Nokia but taking all this into account
it is still one of the best phones out right now. It is absolutely
packed with features and feels solid and if you like the feel of
it then I recommend you buy it, simple as that. Brilliant screen
sharpness and colour. Of all the 3G phones out now I'd pick this
one - if you can wait 3 months for the Nokia N80 then I'd go for

Build quality is horrible - cheap plastic, battery cover rattles,
phone creaks, when open it is top heavy and so is hard to use in
one hand. The display is very bright and clear - the only good point.
No proper shortcut when texting - you have to press the button 4
times just to get to the create new text message screen. Also it
doesn't keep a record of recently texted numbers so you have to
scroll through contacts list each time. If you add a photo to contact,
it only comes up when you get a call from that person and not when
you get a text. Call quality and signal strength both poor and the
battery life is shockingly bad - get ready to charge it virtually
every day. No USB cable came with mine so you have to buy one to
be able to transfer MP3's - unbelievable. Back to Sony for me.

What a terrible phone. After having the outstanding V3 I thought
the V3x could only improve on the best & have compatibility. Granted
the camera, keypad & screen are better, but this list of disappointments
are many. 1, cheap plastic look & feel, creaks in your hand while
using the phone. 2, no software supplied & the previous v3 software
doesn't find the v3x - over 500 synced with outlook contacts have
to be manually entered. 3, bluetooth car settings keep dropping
& have to be manually disconnected & then re-connected - same car
kit worked 1st time with 3 previous phones. 4, voice dialling -
what a nightmare. Previous phones let you assign voice tags to frequent
numbers - fine. V3x tries to use speech recognition to dial any
number in your phone book. That means you have to remember exactly
how each entry is written in your address book & say the word phonetically
(e.g. to dial IBM you have to say "name dial" & then say "ibbem"
- ridiculous. Most names cannot be recognised anyway, really frustrating
- when trying to dial "Bev Mobile" the phone says "did you say Dave
Mobile" you have to say "no" & start again - appalling. 5, Battery
- see everyone else’s comments, 1 day if you're lucky.

bit more sturdy...the back battery covers on the grey units creak
and are loose. I have had issues with the phone screen going blank
and then powering back up on it's own. The battery life sucks..you
can take that in a couple of ways..=)but for a flagship its not
bad. Maybe Motorola on it's second run with this model could use
carbon fiber for the shell..it's lite, strong and almost as good
as metal as far as lasting plus it would take away the "toy" feeling
the phone has. The battery needs improving and needs to be able
to support all the cool techie stuff the phone offers it's users.
All in all not bad for a flagship model.

I have never been so disgruntled about a phone but this one takes
the biscuit! I can only assume that the quality control department
were on holiday when they passed the phone for production. The plastic
finish is toy-like and the camera quality is at best average. Put
it in your top pocket and it’s like walking around with a
house brick glued to your shirt! As for the battery life, I have
never had to charge a phone as often as with this one. On an average
week, I am charging it about four times, which is no good to man
nor beast. That said, my mate has just purchased the new V3i and
what a difference. One thing is for sure, it is everything that
the V3x is not and that’s no exaggeration believe me. Come

the V3i has a 1.23mp camera. There is actually no difference at

I have a V3 and upgraded mid Dec for the V3X because I wanted 3G
data speeds with my PDA and Laptop. The phone is everything I require
and a lot more. I expected to be a bit bigger, but there is a lot
more in the phone. The biggest plus is the voice activated name
and number dialling - brilliant! Just what you need when driving.
I see from other reviews that some people are dissapointed. A lot
of the problems are either early software releases which had problems
or lack of understanding in using the phone correctly. Vodafone
business in the UK sent back the first few consignments to Motorola
due to software issues. Vodafone online and the limited number of
Vodafone stores were selling these early batches. With the V3 I
bought the upgraded deluxe version of Motorola phone tools which
worked in a fashion with the V3X but you had to select a V3C as
your phone. BVRP have now released an upgrade which works seamlessly
as a V3X. Someone had USB driver issues - 2K and XP have the drivers
already there! Just click on search for most suitable driver. Downsides:
The plastic case does not have quite the same finesse as the V3
and there is insufficient V3X specific genuine parts available -
worst of all a case! This is not enough for me to take away a star.
Motorola would do well to ensure that the accessories are available
at the time of release and not just get the phone on the market
pre christmas! In summary oustanding. I would buy it again.

battery life. It lasts a day, if that. I use my phone alot and after
eight or so hours of the day, the battery is on 1 bar and then by
early evening its dead. The thing just cannot perform basic functions
without draining huge amounts of battery power. The features are
all fantastic, screen quality, camera, mp3 sound quality are all
top, im just so annoyed the battery can't last more than a day.
Needing a charge every ten or so hours kinda defeats the object

Very nice piece of kit, has got everything u could want from a phone
EXCEPT a long battery life - its ok, but only lasts about two days
if you're like me and use it alot. Compared with my old phone (the
Sharp GX30i) the screen is graphically better and brighter, iv never
seen such a great screen on a phone. The mp3 player is brilliant,
with very good sound quality through both the earphones and loudspeaker.
The 2megapixel camera is nice, but not as good as I had expected,
nevertheless it still out performs my friend's Sony Ericsson W900i,
but wouldn't it be nice if Kodak bought out a camera phone... The
bluetooth works fine with my friend's phones and my computer, and
being able to use a transflash card means I can store about eighty
mp3s on my 256mb card. As for styling, its not as smooth as the
V3 as it is only plastic, but it's nice plastic! And to be fair
it's got a stylish attractive finish, especially on the keypad and
around the screen. It's also very flexible in terms of use, even
with vodafone software you can use your own mp3s as ringtones, and
send and recieve anything (except games) by bluetooth; this is a
step up from the restriction of my old Sharp GX30i. Overall 8/10,
fab in all aspects except the battery life which is apparently as
good as 3G phones get (but still only two days worth), and the camera
which although is most impressive, I find hard to believe represents
2 megapixels. Seems to be one of the best phones around if you can
afford the rip off contracts

OK now, I am going to be totally honest. I have had the new V3x
for almost a whole month already and so know it fairly well, and
so for your benefit I am going to list you the pros and cons of
having this phone, for me anyway. I've got the V3x on the online
1400 tariff with 3 and to start with I was over the moon and thought
it was great. But when you start to use it more you can see exactly
what its like so here you go: (i hope this helps!) Pros: basically
the pros are everything that you read in the advertisements. good
multimedia functions, picture quality etc. etc. For the pros just
read the specs online. Cons - the cons are the things that you dont
hear about and that may take a while for you to realise, which can
be a pain when you notice them after starting a 12 or 18 month contract!
Personally, the first problem i encountered was the signal. Overall
it was fantastic and normally still is, but for a couple of days
now, for some unknown reason, the 3G coverage does not work at times
and it is stuck on 2.5G coverage. Secondly, at times the screen
has gone blank and a notice comes up saying no signal. It only lasts
for about 5 seconds but it has happened quite a few times with me.
The second problem i encountered was with the bluetooth. me and
a friend of mine (who has the samsung e720) paired up phones via
bluetooth. he could access my files and retrieve them from my phone
and he could also send files to me (which is what you expect), however,
with my v3x i could nothing of the sort. after pairing the phones
i could not open hie files or even send him files from my phone!
why i am not sure. The third problem i encountered was a very strange
one. the phone at times seems to have a mind of its own. it occured
with my wma and mp3 files. for some reason, in amongst my music
files a blank file appeared with no name except a picture of a red
'x'. wenever i try to delete it it says 'cannot be done, file in
use'. another thing i did was sort my mus ic into seperate categories
(eg. dance, rock). this worked fine but wen i tried to add another
file to one of the categories, the phone began to ask me about other
files that had nothing to do wiv wot i was doing. it then began
to delete random files wenever i tried to escape. strange but true.
my last point (at last!) is more of a worry than a problem. every
other phone i have had has had a camera that is protected by some
sort of plastic cover. this phone has a camera lens that cud get
scratched easily if not treated properly. well, thats all i have
to say. you may be wondering why ive still given the phone 4 stars.
well, ive gone into much detail with my points and the problems
i hav are fairly rare and dont affect the phone too much. u can
live with them and they do not stop the phone from having fantastic
features and use. u may not even hav the same problems that i hav
had with this fone, so i hope this verdict helps you! ps. my last
tip is that if u want to use this phone as an mp3 player, u shud
buy at least a 128 mb transflash card.

on the phone is just what was looking, ie 2MP camera, good quality

but i have found that after fully discharging and recharging at
least 10 times the battery has settled in nicely. Although it doesn't
last as long as a 2g phone, but hardly suprising with all the work
the little chap has to do!! I have found it very useful to download

three supplies the phone with software that works thru bluetooth,
thru cable or infrared. The cable was included with the package
too so not really any hassle at all. Also noted one woman said the
buttons on the side were unprotected and she was taking pictures
of the inside of her bag. I dont find this at all, infact when the
clamshell is shut the buttons on the side can only be used to change
the ringer profile so i'm confused by her review. I have noticed
however, that every so often the phone screen can power down, then
restart (hence, cutting the internet connection, or outbound calls).
This is probably just a problem with my handset, usually when jolted.
Have noticed this 2 or 2 times. Not sure if i'll contact three about

This phone is the absolute pits. I have to set my ringtone etc on
a theme, and then set the volume etc as a style. I'm only allowed
5 styles, only one of which has vibe and ring, and those are set.
The keypad is awful, its horrible to try and text with it, and on
top of that the predictive text isn't very predictive because once
you've taken a space away from a word you have to rewrite it, to
get it back to predictive. (And as a result scroll through every
charater, which is a right bitch on emails. Not that I can set my
emails up...). Whats the point in having the front screen, it doesn't
do anything. And I don't seem to be able to take photos without
flipping the top open (I might have that wrong). I uploaded some
mp3s to use as ringtones - the speaker crackles at volume 3 and
sounds very, very poor. However, my biggest hatred about this phone,
is that the charge plugs into the left side and not the bottom.
As a left handed person, this means that whilst I can hold the phone
on charge, my thumb isn't long enough to reach the buttons. Meaning,
I can't text and charge. That, in my opinion, is a really, really,
really ill thought out ergonimcal design.

I have to say, that this is probably one of the best looking phones
and nicest to hold in your hand, the main screen is excellent. But
it does have some major failings. I got mine last week 5 days before
christmas, and had to return it and get another, which then developed
the same software problems. It's software is very layered and time
consuming unlike Lg's simple and easy to use software this one is
a nightmare. Some of the issues I experienced was none regonition
of the caller, showed the number but didnt show the name even though
stored on the phonebook. Unable to access certain stored contacts
details, it just returned to the main menu on select. Unable to
access recent call lists. I discovered that the only way to fix
these problems was, not just remove the battery but also the sim,
and they occured every two days. I thought it was the phone I had
but when it happened in it's replacement, such as leaving on it
stunningly attractive "blue" recharge light even when not recharging,
not good for battery life. Motorolla have done a great job in it's
design and it's bluetooth is flawless, unlike the Lg 8380. But the
software is absolutly terrible. Yet so many people are getting this
phone, I wonder how many have tried to access their misses cals
etc. or have has similar problems, the 3G store where I got mine
did confirm they had seen this before and that not to sell it to
heavy users as the battery life was a poor. I have spoken with Motorolla
service people by email and they where quick to respond, but confirmed
there was no udate for the software pending. If you want bluetooth

here is my big tip: if u are after a gud fone for business, get
the N70, but if you are after a great, fast and reliable multimedia
fone with all the bells and whistles, GET THE V3X!!!!!!!!!! the
tariff i am on is also great. it is called online 1400 from 3. i
wud cetainly recommend this, but its only vailable online.

I had only saw pictures of this phone til yesterday when I got mine.
I was expecting a new improved version of the V3 RAZR. However,
whilst technologically quite advanced and improved, I was after
the same slick metallic finish and only slightly bigger. What I
did get, was a phone, almost twice as thick as the orginal V3, which
was the optimum size, with a cheap plastic finish. This is a big
phone in my view. My view is, buy this phone if you want 3G, and
are techno crazy, and WILL actually use the tech features. I've
no mates with 3G and if I did, I don't think I would use the video
calling, unless of course the girlfriend has one, and we're apart
for the evening!!! ;-) The phone software and UI is very much improved,
quick and easy to use, no delay in menus etc, which we're familiar
with on the V3 All I want is a small tidy, slick phone with a 2MP
camera, obviously too much to ask for right now. I'm sending this
back and gonna wait for something nice to come along.

I've just upgraded from a V3 and the difference is massive. Even
if the phone is thicker and heavier than the V3x the software upgrades
are impressive. I got mine through Vodaphone and the whole web surfing
functions along with live TV are fantastic. The speacker is not
the best but if you use the headphones provided it is excellent.
The 2.0 M.P. camera is very good in both photo and video mode. Overall,
the phone is a big improvement software wise. A must have!

Overall I have been pleased with the phone, if not blown away. The
most impressive thing is the camera which can also be effectively
used in a landscape mode. What the other reviewees are doing wrong
I'n not sure - finger over the lense? Love the looks and the feel,
even if it is bigger and heavier than the V3. My main complaint
at the moment is that the microphone is not ideally positioned and
you can hear breath feedback when you talk. The sound quality is
not great either way and it appear not to be just a signal problem.
The voice recognition is good but nobody will use it. Speed dial
ten times quicker. My final gripe - the alarm. It can't be set for
the whole week and ideally, it would be nice to be able to set the
snooze length. However, in summary: an excellent phone that looks
great, has great functions and fits nicely in your pocket. The best
out there? Probably not quite.

It has none of the sleekness of the V3. But some of its functions
are better, however this let down by the cheap and tacky plastic
used.

Just collected my Motorola V3x got it home with excitement and go
to all the websites that list it but no software technical help
from vodafone so how can I sync it with outlook. Looks like this
may turn out to be more of a toy that a tool. Now five days with
phone and still no one at vodafone or Motorola can locate any software
or updates. Help needed with technical info and programs.

breaking down and the picture quality is pants the v3 picture quailty
is way better and its only 0.3 megapixel. the only thing that is
better is the memory but half of the songs on it disapear and the
sound quality is also rubbish. go for the v3 guys better sound quality
and better picture quality.

I have just purchased one of these on Vodafone UK. The 2MB is next
to useless, does not even compare to the 1,3MP Nokia camera. I donth
even think its a 1MP qualiy. The size, weight and build is superb,
screen is excellent, looks fantastic. Compared to the Nokia, the
software on the motorola is not very good. It does not eben have
video recording or editing software. If its looks you want, then
this is it. If its looks and functionality, stick to the Nokia N70.

The stylish design coupled with the unlimited phone featres simply
blows you away.At first glance its looks incredibly similar to the
V3 but the upgraded features really seperate it from the V3.The
V3X will undoughtely revolutionize the design of slim and compact
cell phones and will truly be the basis of future phone design.
The superb phone graphics and ulta modern camera simply sells the
phone. The motorola V3X spells the future of great thing to come
from motorola. This is one of the best phones ever to hit the market.
