Motorola
V3i Review
Phone
rating:
The
Motorola V3i is the updated version of the super-slim RAZR V3. The
V3i is a superb mobile: it has everything that was good about the
V3 with none of the bad bits!
Physically,
the V3i is virtually the same as the original RAZR phone, with the
same super-slim 14mm case and chemically-etched
keypad with cool back-lighting. The colour is different, but the
rest is virtually unchanged. Even a year after the release of the
V3, this is still a design that will turn heads. The display is
the same as on the original - a very high quality 262k colour TFT
screen with a high resolution of 176 x 200 pixels. The external
display is full colour but small. It displays useful information
like incoming calls, battery life and signal strength.
Inside the phone everything has changed. The V3's
low resolution still camera has been replaced with a 1.23 megapixel
camera that is also capable of video recording. A music player has
been added and there is now an expandable memory card, with storage
for up to 150 tracks. Airplane
mode lets you use the music player whilst on an aircraft. You may
have read that the V3i comes with Apple
iTunes®
software, but sadly this is not available in the UK version.
The V3i also supports full Bluetooth wireless
connectivity, MP3 ringtones, Java games, an integrated speakerphone
and quad-band capability for global roaming. The battery life is
reasonably good.
The V3i is still a great phone. It doesn't have
quite as many bells and whistles as newer phones like the Samsung
D900 or the Sony Ericsson
K800i, but it does have a good specification and bags of style.
The V3i m is the same as the V3i but with
the addition of iTunes®.
Features
of the Motorola V3i include:
- 1.23 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom
- Video camera
- Internal display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 176
x 220 pixels
- External display: 65,000 colours, 96 x 80 pixels
- MP3 player
- MP3 ringtones
- Integrated handsfree speaker
- Speaker independent speech recognition
- Messaging: SMS, EMS 5.0, MMS,
Instant Messaging, Email (Pop3, SMTP, IMAP4)
- iTAP predictive text
- Java games (embedded and downloadable)
- Downloadable Themes (Ringtones, Wallpaper &
Screensavers)
- Personal organiser functions (Calculator and
Currency Converter, Date and Clock, Calendar with alarm settings)
- Picture phonebook (up to 1,000 entries)
- Airplane mode

- Connectivity: Bluetooth, mini-USB

this is an amazing handset and quite rightly deserves the accolades
it receives, firstly and foremostly (lol) the camera is 10 times
better than the standard v3, then you also get the music player
and the better screen, bluetooth is great to use and is compatible
with nearly every bluetooth accessory i have thrown at it, headsets,
dongles etc etc. looks awesome and soooo coooool, still turns heads
even though looks aint changed a great deal from the v3, but this
v3i is 10 times better than the top of the range v3x, mostly bad
reviews from every site, keypad easy to use and navigation through
menus is also straightforward and simplified by the ever so ergonomic
keypad, NUFF SAID GO GET ONE!!!!!!!

This phone is simply outstanding. I have owned a V3 for the past
year and although I love the design etc, it just couldnt cut it
with things like speed of software etc. The V3i has ironed out almost
all the niggly faults of the V3 and is a true thing of beauty. If
like me you want a phone that has nice features on it, but half
of them wont get used! However it has to look sexy and of a practical
size, then all I can say is buy this phone, you wont regret it.

I've only just got the phone, hence the rating of 4! Seems to do
pretty much the same as its predecessor but with the addition of
upgradable memory, a better screen resolution and more flexible
phone book entries. You can also, contrary to another review on
here, sync with the Mac using iSync and the cable that comes with
the phone - you cannot however sync the phone and Mac with bluetooth
for some bizarre reason which is a tad annoying as I was told you
could bluetooth between V3i and Mac! If I am wrong about this, any
advice greatly received at victoriamcneile@mac.com! The phone is
very sleek and sexy (if that is important to you!) and you can download
lots of ringtones, piccies etc... using a PC and Motorola Tools
4.0 - luckily we have both Mac and PC in our house otherwise I would
be stuck. I will have a further play with it and perhaps add to
this review in a week or two or do another new review.

Having owned many of the recent handsets ( Sony Ericsson W800i ,
Samsung D600 , Nokia 6230i ) I would say this is the best balance
in terms of build quality , features and performance. It's a beautiful
handset. The build quality is outstanding and the feature set ,
which really handicapped the original Razr V3 has been updated sufficiently
here to make this a great all round mobile.Call quality and reception
are both excellent, texting is easy thanks to an unusual but tactile
keypad. The camera , whilst not in the same league as some of the
more recent Sharp or Sony Ericsson offerings is still more than
adequate and a vast improvement on the original V3. There's plenty
of room to store those photo's and your MP3 music too thanks to
the Transflash memory card slot. Oh and did I mention, most importantly
of all , a blue Motorola logo light's up whenever you receive a
text message or make a call ! What more could you want ?

I upgraded to this Motorola V3i a week ago. Has spent quite a lot
of time reading all kinds of phone reviews on the net for quite
a while. Note: I use my phone for business mostly and value Bluetooth,
phone book memory, ease of use; my previous phones were Ericssons
and SonyEricssons, though I’ve had some experience with some
Nokias, one Panasonic and Samsung D600. Ultimately, for me at least,
the phone should be just a phone to be used to make calls (not to
have good camera, MP3 player, etc.). All in all, V3i and all other
new phones on the market are the same in the basic functions, but
V3i looks very sophisticated; very slim (big plus for me as I have
to carry it in my pocket all the time); seems to be constructed
very well too, feels solid (not like my last SonyEricsson K700i
– was squeaking when pushed on the buttons); battery seems
OK so far – would estimate that it would certainly last about
a week if idle (you have to charge the phones when new and turned
off for 16 hours and then get it discharged completely, fully charge
again till complete – about 4 hours – then discharge
again, to repeat this cycle about 4-5 times to ensure the best battery
performance); it’s a flip phone and you’re sue the phone
is not going to call someone by itself (it happened to me with “open”
phones before, even with keypad lock (I carry my phone often in
the back pocket of jeans); V3i has good choice in personalising
the handset, easy to switch between statuses – loud, quiet,
others. In general all the other normal factions are on a par with
other phones. My second choice would have been Samsung D600 or SE
K750i, but K750i to me is just K700i with a new body and there wasn’t
anything too special about D600 (though in my mind it’s on
second place after V3i). I was not convinced by the sliding mechanism
as such, central menu “squire” was not the best (I like
the best the joystic ks of SonyEricssons, though V3i menu terminal
is a bless as well as the buttons – just a bless – fingers
just glide over them). Finally I lost interest in D600 when I found
out it had the stupidest omission – no simulations ring and
vibrate alert for calls. At last, V3i has some drawbacks for me,
but which I can swallow: phone book does not show one person entry
with mobile, work, home numbers – all entered under one. I
also could not send all my phone book from K700i (about 490 entries)
via Bluetooth at once – has to do it one by one, took me about
1.5 hours. Once I sent the contacts over, each contact number was
stored separately: under the same name, but with a mobile, work,
home sign with it (for example “X” with mobile, “X”
home, “X” home, “X” fax). I believe all
the other makes don’t do that anymore. Lastly, I would mention
that the software that came with the phone looks quite good, at
least on the screen when loaded on a computer (but I have not used
it yet), synchronisation with Outlook, etc. should not be a problem.
4 stars for not having a modern phone book structure.

Once you have figured out how to get around this phone it seems
to be the bees knees. Everything I wanted. However I since discovered
a very basic flaw. If you set up a specific ring tone (ringer ID)
for a particular person then all contact from them, including txt
messages, is that tone. So I have set up Lovecats by the Cure for
a friend, and whenever they send me a txt that tune is played -
all of it! this is very annoying as you don't know whether they
are ringing you or sending a txt.

Motorola are seemingly on an unprecedented "crest of a wave" with
their RAZR models. The latest, the V3i takes all of the old outdated
features of the V3 & replaces them with bang up to date gizmos.
A 1.23 megapixel camera replaces the old dismal VGA camera. Modes,
flash, video capture and 8X zoom make the camera options on the
V3i much more respectable. A full screen viewfinder helps you get
the most for that perfect picture & when you've done simply save
it, send it to friends or to your computer via Bluetooth. Memory
has been brought into line with other Motorola products too, so
the V3i now boasts expandable memory - none of the constraints of
the old model to be seen! The handset also takes advantage of Motorola’s
SCREEN3 technology for zero-click access to news, sports and entertainment.
Now you can fly stress-free while catching up on world news. Quad-band
technology allows you to roam seamlessly across countries and continents.
Combined with Bluetooth technology and speaker independent name
and digit dialling and you have hands-free capabilities to juggle
work and play.

and shared the other reviewers views on the ease of operation and
performance of the Nokia operating systems. Upon opening the box,
I was immediately blown away by the sheer beauty of the V3i - how
could this sliver of metal be a fully loaded communication device?
Having bought the phone on contract using the same airtime provider
as my company phone I substituted my own SIM card and booted her
up (OK so I charged it for 3 hours first). Hey presto I was now
admiring the huge colour screen with 256,000 colours. Within an
hour, I had synchronised the V3i with Outlook 2003 and downloaded
all my contacts and calendar items rather than punching them in
by hand. Pairing my Bluetooth headset to the V3i was a breeze, they
found each other within seconds and have been a couple ever since
. Accessing the WAP functions was simplicity itself – after
visiting the Motorola website to get the MMS and WAP settings sent

My wife has just got one on upgrade. Nice looking phone with some
nice features. However, the software for use on the PC and the bluetooth
are appalling (I write software for a job). I could not get the
bluetooth to work between the PC and mobile. I've had no problems
with my Nokia 6230i, which also has better support for playing mp3
music. It can play in the background and a headset is supplied.
The 6230i also has a radio. If your looking for a good multimedia
phone then the V3i isn't it. I've not been disappointed with the
6230i from Nokia, though.

As a past Samsung and Sony Ericsson user, this is the first time
that I have ever purchased a Motorola phone. I have to say I am
not disappointed and the V3i is an excellent piece of kit. It looks
out of this world and performs equally as well. The large screen
is great for surfing the net, viewing photos and composing text
messages. Overall, it is a brilliant phone and you will not be disappointed
– despite the negative reviews further down the page. I cannot
believe that anyone would give this phone less than five stars,
unless of course they are just trying the discredit its brilliance
and noticeable popularity. That said, you always get one don’t

this fone is for people that want a fashion accessory rather than
a decent bit of kit. I've gone from the a1000 to this, and i can't
believe the difference in actual build quality and software. the
key buzz is something else, the mp3 player is cack (wheres itunes
which was announced would be on it???), the memory is tiny, the
connectivity is shoddy as your gonna get nowadays, its simply built
for showing off. Its only plus points are that the camera is better
than the a1000, it takes the same memory cards (hotswappable) and
its looks.

I just got this phone last week so here are my first impressions:
The RAZR V3i has a much better fit and finish than any of the Nokia
phones I've used. Everything is tight and functions perfectly. The
phone is extremely well built and is much smaller, thinner and lighter
than it looks in pictures. It "feels" much smaller than my old Nokia
6820. Call quality is superb. Speakerphone is excellent. Reception
is also exceptional, better than my past mobiles. Menus and User
Interface are much better than they used to be for Motorola. Last
time I tried a Motorola phone was years ago and I was really annoyed
by the menus. Now it's much more like a Windows or Linux GUI, and
easy to learn the basics. Overall an excellent phone, which scores
10/10 in my book. I am very impressed and I don't think I will be
missing my Nokia.

Designed to be the thinnest flip phone ever, the RAZR v3i has a
solid anodized aluminum shell and is packed full of the latest technology;
quad-band GSM for use in 100+ countries, long-range Bluetooth, 20
Khz Polyphonic Speaker, MP3 Player, MPEG4 video (encode and decode),
Speaker independent speech recognition, Integrated Digital Camera:
1.23 megapixel with 8X optical zoom, beautiful 176 x 220 TFT colour

What a lovely looking phone...! Quality camera, although as mentioned
below, you do need a steady hand. You can navigate easily through
the menus and texting is easy, even with big fumbling fingers like
I have. Battery life is good and the software for the PC is excellent,
using the USB cable adapter provided, with live updates too. One
major fault in my opinion is the very poor ringtone volume. I work
in a noisey place and have to use high pitched ringtones so as to
hear the phone ring. This is partly due to the fact that the speaker
is on the underside of the phone when in the laying flat position.
A big mistake..! Pre-installed ring tones are dire too, but this
dos'nt matter as you can use your own. Why do phone companies not
make these phones louder...? We can turn the volume down if need
be..!! Other than that I love this stylish phone and would recommend
it to all.

Be warned! After owning the Motorloa V3i for one week its flaws
started to show. The problems are mostly with the bluetooth facility,
which is terrible. It has a built in Mp3 player which will only
transmit voice calls to a bluetooth headset but not music (I bought
a Motorola Ht820 headset and after calling the helpline I was told
the V3i will not transmit music via bluetooth!). It will also not
connect to a TomTom go navigation unit. I have now returned the
phone to the dealer and exchanged it for a Samsung D600 which works
perfectly, and the Ht820 headset is extremely good.

is agreat improvement on the v3. I have had this new phone for a
week now and find many of the new features excellent. The camera
is the best I have tried, it will take pictures that can be printed
off in 6x4 format which are crisp and clean in detail, previously
I have tried two other leading camera phones in this class and niether
would present a satisfactory photo when printed off. The expandable
memory is excellent. The software has also been upgraded and is
now faster at responding. A good phone, I believe Motorola has addressed
a lot of the issues that were apparent with the v3.

I tried a V3x and sent it back, just a big lump of horrible cheap
plastic but the V3i has been carved from a piece of the Starship
Enterprise - it's stunning! I've upgraded from a V3 and the differences
are amazing. Much better camera, it now also has a video camera,
mp3 player, good battery life, beautiful clear screen and the voice
recognition is amazing! It may not be have all the bells and whistles
that Nokias etc offer but stand in your local phone shop and look
at all the same old same plastic offerings. The V3i looks like its
been beamed down from another planet. Press the button on the headset,
say "name dial" then say the name, the V3i phones it. Eat your heart
