Motorola V220
Review
Phone
rating:
The
V220 is an entry-level camera phone. It looks similar to its big
brother phones, the V300, V500 and V600, but does not have as many
features. Cost-savings start with the colour screen, which is small
and uses STN technology rather than TFT, making it less bright and
crisp. The camera is very poor quality and tends to take fuzzy dark
images. Other areas where Motorola have economised are in the reduced
memory, no Bluetooth, no quad band, no infra-red.
There
are some reports of hardware failures amongst our user reviews (below)
but not so many to indicate any kind of systematic design or manufacturing
defect. We suspect that Motorola have used cheap components to save
costs and so the V220 may be more susceptible to damage than some
other phones.
On
the positive side, the V220 is smaller and lighter than the other
Motorola clamshells, so could be a good choice for someone who does
not need the more advanced features. We do like the curvaceous silver
design, and the V220 is still a well-specified phone, with a digital
camera, MP3 ringtones, handsfree speaker, USB connection for transferring
pictures to a computer, and triband, and is a good choice when the
budget is tight.
Features
of the Motorola V220 include:
- Integrated VGA digital camera (640 x 480 pixels),
digital zoom
- Colour screen (STN)
- Polyphonic ringtones / MP3 ringtones
- MOTOMIXER™ (Remixable MIDI ringer software)
- Java games - Hungry Fish & OptItOut,
plus downloadable games
- SMS / EMS / MMS
- Predictive text input (iTap)
- Built-in
handsfree speaker
- Picture
phone book
- Connectivity: Mini USB
- Internal Memory: 1.8 Mbytes
- WAP
2.0, GPRS Class 10
- Tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900
- Size: 86 x 44 x 24 mm
- Weight: 100g
- Talktime: 5 hours
- Battery standby: 9.5 days

I have 2nd phone in one week and it has same problem. When I scroll
within incoming text messages up and down few times, both displays
freezes up. In about minute it shuts down, both screens stay illuminated
but blank. Any key does not work. In next (about)it reboots itself
and start work at home page. This is absolutely same problem as
previous phone, so it appears it is problem in design rather then
manufacturing defect. Set up all functions is complicated without
much logic, compare LG phones. Reception is bad too, compare to
LG and my 6 years old Motorola Startach. This phone is P.O.S. in
my opinion.

and has many features. Comparing this with other motorola phones
like the v500 and v600 it hasnt got as much features like infrared
and bluetooth but other than that its a good price, it has a good
camera and is a brilliant little phone, id reccomend this phone

just been trying out this phone on 2 different networks. build -
initially thought it felt very cheap and plastic-ky but on further
use seems not too bad for the price. still a step down from previous
motorolas i've had. screen - no getting around the fact that (a)
screen is tiny and (b) camera resolution is too dark. very disappointing.
email - could email on my previous T720 but not on V220 (though
you can email pics, just not msgs -- wtf?) texting - very easy to
use i find, incl the T9 overall i feel they've tried to pack to
much into this little phone. it's definitely NOT a handset for business
i got one for me and one for a friend. i've already sent back mine,
and my friend's going to hold on to her samsung x450 even though
no camera. p.s. good luck trying to find the usb cable and software

This phone rocks - Its that simple! If you are after a phone that
you can modify easily and have a good usable phone this is the one.
The camera quality on the screen isnt great but once loaded to your
PC it fine but the main thing to do is get yourself a USB cable
and search the net for the correct software. Enable Java uploader
and get some great games\applications on the phone, Load mpeg4 movies,
millions of ringtones and wallpapers are easily available and free.
If you are brave enough you can change the icons on the phone to
XP looking icons etc, start up\shut down screens, External screen
text the lot. In conclussion - Go buy it, NOW!!

After less than one month, the screen cracked. No, I didn't drop,
bang, throw or kick it....broke while on my hip. Returned it to
local Rogers outlet, was told screens were on back order, and had
been for one week. That was three weeks ago, and still no screens.
Tell you anything? When checking a week ago to see if the new screens
are in, THEN was told the repair won't be covered under warranty,
$160.00 + tax Cdn. They insisted I'd been told that when I first
informed them of the problem, which is BS. Customer service VERY

Got the Motorola V220 this weekend to replace my Nokia 3310. Only
paid £55 and I'm pretty impressed with the phone for that
kind of money. Does everything I want - a real step up from the
Nokia. Might not be the world's greatest phone - but what do people
expect on a budget. I'm well made up with it. Can't find anything

This phone is'nt as bad as some people say, It's my dad's phone
but I use it a lot. The good point's are it's quite a good looking,
small, light, neat phone , you can get mp3 ringtones, the game's
are ok. The bad points are the camera blows! (Bearing in mind I
was used to the picture of my clear sharp gx10i so I'm kinda comparing
it here) but at least the camera does'nt lag or blur like my sharp
gx10i the picture come's out dark and pixelly although when I send
the pictures to my sharp, they're fine. The screen is tiny! I think
motorola were being tight when they made this as there's plenty
more space where they could have made it bigger. Text messaging
is very fidelly and hard to do, especially for my dad who's a beginner
to text messaging. If you want a good looking, light, gadgetty phone
that you hardly use then I'd go for this. If you're more serious
about you're phone I'd go for a sharp model.

Well, I just bought this yesterday, the only thing I wasn't so keen
on was the predictive text, but that's cause I haven't worked out
how to use it properly yet:) Nope, I find it a good quality wee
phone for the money and as for the reception, get one of the wee
booster panels you can get on Ebay or something. As for the camera,
well, I've only tried it out a couple of times and found it quite
good. The quality was as good as the Nokia 7250i I had before, and
the tunes are quite cool with it. If you are looking for a better
quality phone then spend more money..duh!

I have had my Motorola V220 for just over a week, and am planning
to take it back for an refund next week. I am VERY disappointed
with it. It is actually the second V220 I've had in just over a
month. Both phones refused to let me either receive or send MMS.
Apparently this was a SIM card error, but seeing as the SIM card
was the one that came with the phone, I find this hard to understand.
Even the bloke in the store couldn't figure out how to use it, and
said it is not at all user friendly, hence the first exchange, and
following this, the bloke at the helpdesk who I phoned regarding
the second phone was stuck by the problem as well. He helped me
over the phone, but then said that if it still wasn't right, he
couldn't see what else it could be. Brilliant! The camera facility
is less than average. The display shows them as being too dark,
or too light, but it is apparently the display at fault and the
photos do come out fine. I plan to pay a little extra, and get a
camera phone with a flash next time, and am reading the reviews
on this site to get an idea. On a plus side, the phone is very small
and neat, and is easy to spot in my bag, the aerial is a little
odd though. I would not recommend anyone buying this phone if they
send or receive a lot of text messages. But then maybe it's just
me!!

I can't believe the rubbish some people have written about this
phone. Personally I think it is great. IT'S A MOBILE PHONE... if
you want a good quality camera buy a camera! Lets face it I knew
when I bought mine that it was a low budget model - I did my homework,
trawlling through review sites like this and seeing what the mags
said about it. I just wanted a small phone, that worked! One thing
I will say is those who reckon they have had to send theirs back
for "repair" more than once should change their mobile provider.
All NEW phones should come with a 12 month warranty. My provider,
Virgin Mobile, will also allow you to return your phone within 28
days of purchase if you decide that it is not the right phone for
you! So if you are looking for a low-budget camera phone then this
is the one for you!

Well, its my first cell phone, we (me and my gf) took the most expansive
that were coming with the deal I got .. one year illimited with
Rogers for 55$CAD/month (including taxes and everything) for both
lines, 3 additionnal free phone tools (hand-free, car charger, etc),
activating fees free with the plan of 3 years. It costs us about
60$ for both phones (30$ each phone...). And after 5 days with this
phone, it looks to me a really good phone, the only things I dislike
are that the screen is not that big and the sound (while listening
to someone) not that good (well blame Rogers maybe). For a flip
phone with colors, icons, mp3s, camera .. I cant believe someone
rank it Poor ... Well if you paid 320$, its true its expansive ..
god bless 3 years plans ;)

I don't know what everyone's problem is. Here is the true review
about this phone. First of all, it isn't the best phone on the market,
but for the money it is damn good. Everybody says the picture quality
taken from the camera sucks, actually that isn't true. The picture
quality on the phones screen isn't that good, you transfer the picture
you taken from your phone to your computer, and it's every as bit
as good as any other camera phone, it's pretty standard. Nothing
wrong with the camera on this phone. The actual screen display could
have been better, but it's good enough, I am not going to watch
Monday night football on the screen, I just use it to make phone
calls (It's a phone right)???? You buy a cheap priced phone and
bitch that it doesn't have rich super high quality features to it
that the Motorola Razr has, well DUH...Morons, it's a cheap phone,
affordable, of course it's not going to be super high quality, you
want super high quality then you go pay the super price tag for
another higher end phone. You don't buy a Dodge Neon and expect
Honda Accord quality do you? I hope not. This V220 phone works very
well, sound is really clear on this one, I can hear the person I
am talking to really well, and they can hear me like I am on a regular
home phone, which is pretty standard now a days for cell phones
cheap one's or expensive doesn't matter. The speaker phone does
crackle some on this unit, but it's a cell phone not a Rockford
12 inch speaker, it's a tiny little cell phone speaker in an affordable
phone, again what do you expect? It might crackle a little, but
it still works very well. I don't really use my speaker phone, so
I guess it's not that important to me, It's a cell phone I don't
expect it to work magic, I just expect it to work as a phone, and
this one does do that very well. Everybody forgot to mention how
long the battery last in this phone, it last a long time for a Cell,
maybe because it is small and light weight, ya never know. If you
are looking for an affordable good cell phone this is the one for
you, if you expect the phone to do more then a phone was intended
to do, then buy yourself a Lap-top computer. Or get the money out
of your butts and buy a Motorola Razr Phone, only cost you around
$500. :)

Had mine for 3 months or so now. As a phone and texter it's more
than adequate. Took me a while to get used to it after previously
owning Nokias but I now prefer the operation of the V220 - dead
easy to use. It's small as well. Battery life too is extremely impressive!
Build quality isn't brilliant, esp. the battery compartment area.
Camera not great either (mediocre quality & no video capability),
though this is a minor issue - if I wanna take pics I'll use my
digi camera, not my phone. Overall - pretty good.

about it? It is a complete, utter, amazingly huge, 100%...hunk...of
junk!!! I have never came across a phone so bad, not only does it
take you a year and a half to write a text (and that is using predicta

on it limits the things I want on it. Not for contruction people....
maybe if you sit at a desk all day with it. All in al it seems to
be a very cheap phone. I wouldn't get another unless it was totally
free.

I strongly recommend this phone to anyone who is on the look out
for a new phone quickly, its got amazing ringtones, great games,
impressive multimedia like videos and pictures and brilliant 'exclusive'
features, like the Motomixer. But there is one reason why I have
not given this great phone a 5/5 Rating, the intergrated VGA 4x
zoom camera. Obviously the fact the phone has a camera is amazing,
but sadly the quality is not great, but it is still usable. I think
this phone is an absalute bargain and should be bought right now!!!!

and the camera could be better. the V600 or the V525 would be worth
the cash as they both have more features. however, the 4ne is quite
stylish and looks good and the mp3 tones are really cool, its worth
it if you dont need or want the extra features like infrared and

This phone is terrible!! It's a cheap phone and everything about
it is cheap. If you are on a VERY TIGHT budget then this phone may
suit your needs. The camera is terrible, very fuzzy. It loses signal
alot which never happened to me before! The USB connection is pathetic.
The screen is so small and the colors are dim. Apparently they changed
the screen from a LCD Screen to make the phone cheaper but at the
same time it's lost all it's color. The only good thing about this
phone is that it's small, ideal for a night out (fits in your handbag
perfectly!) the other good thing is it's silver! If you are going
to get a phone go back to the good old NOKIA'S or a Samsung E700
E710 or the E800, these phones are 200% better than this cheap Motorola
V220. I hope my review helps you out!

I got this phone on an upgrade free from B.T and had a choice out
of the Motorola V220 Motorola V80 or the SE T610 Well, reading reviews
on the V80 i was quickly put off so i looked at the othertwo. I
chose evntually THe V220 as the camera quality on T610 is v bad.
The V220 is so good! It's small and dinky which will fit nicely
in your pocket. Previously owning a sagem X-2 i found the ringtones
embarrasing and so put it on silent most of the time but this phone's
ringtones ae great and if you don't like them there is a fast WAP
service to get more. And also as it is a flip phone there isnt the
probem of the keypad unlocking or turning it's self on. It's a very
good buy!

great to fit in your pocket. It has the funniest game called fotofunpack2

your captured images. Great screensavers, good ringtones and great
camera. Dont know about the battery haven't had it long. Apart from

all at once instead of deleting each one at a time the phone is

quality, VERY easy to text quickly and use. Camera is quite good
- not the BEST quality, but it does it's job. It has a nice looking
screen on the outside, and good quality buttons (not clicky or plastic).
I wasn't sure baout this phone when i ordered it. I loved my Nokia

This is a very un-user friendly phone and that seems to be the problem
with all Motorola phones. In terms of design, it's fine, the external
screen is rather small though, and what you would definitely miss
is the infra red port. It's rather troublesome to be carrying a
USB cable around. The screen is not sharp and the colors are really
dull - if you are looking for high picture quality, this is so not
the phone to use (consider Samsung instead). With such small phone
memory, I had to delete the preinstalled games to make space for
other stuffs. It's a pity the preinstalled pictures and ring tones
can't be deleted, it's really useless in the phone other than wasting
the memory space. The software is not working properly on my laptop,
so I haven't been able to transfer any ring tones to my phone -
just wondering is it my problem or is anyone else experiencing this
too.

was decieved. It's pretty good about the signal and doesn't weaken
very often, as well as the battery lasts a long time. But other
than these two things-I havent been happy with any other aspect

look, i just want to say where you ALL CAN SEE that there IS, i
repeat THERE IS a way to have multiple numbers or phonebook entries
UNDER ONE NAME. PRIMARY CONTACTS. find that in the settings, and
then when you're in the phone book, you just hit left or right to
see the different numbers. i have 3 different work numbers in my
phone, ALL UNDER ONE NAME. it doesn't say my company's name 3 times.
only once. this is on all of the v series phones. i am SICK of reading
about people complaining about this when it says in the manual how
to change it!
