The
Motorola ROKR E1 is a joint development by Motorola and Apple and
is the first mobile phone to support Apple's iTunes® system
as used in the iPod. The ROKR has been called the iPod phone, and
it includes a number of features that make it a superb music player
as well as a phone. The music player supports a range of formats,
including MP3 and AAC, and the iTunes interface makes downloading
tracks and creating playlists a breeze. This is definitely something
that gives it an edge over other MP3 player phones. Downloading
is not that quick - a 4 Mbyte MP3 track takes around 30 seconds
to download. This is much slower than an iPod.
Music
output is via 3D surround sound from twin speakers. You can also
listen to music via the matching stereo headset supplied, however
you cannot listen to music with a Bluetooth headset (Bluetooth is
for voice calls only). Sound quality through the headphones is excellent
and is pretty good via the speakers too.
The
ROKR also has the full range of other features that you'd expect
from a phone in this price range. These include a good 262k colour
screen, a camera and a video recorder, although the camera is only
VGA resolution (0.3 megapixels). A nice feature is the side lights
that sync with music, ringtones and games and the vibration effects
that sync with games and music. The "airplane" mode is
also very handy, enabling you to access games and music during flights.
TransFlash
memory cards can be used to expand the memory of the device. However,
the phone has a limit of 100 music tracks, regardless of the memory
available. This is a feature of the iTunes implementation. Once
you've reached the limit of 100 songs, you have to delete some in
order to download more. 100 tracks is a limit that will probably
frustrate many users.
It's
definitely a phone worthy of consideration if you're looking for
a combined phone and MP3 player, but it's not the only choice by
far. You could also look at the Sony
Ericsson W800i, the Samsung D600,
or a Nokia smartphone, such as the N91.
Some of our user reviews have compared the ROKR with the older Motorola
E398, and it's certainly true that the ROKR is basically an
improved E398 with the addition of iTunes. It's evolutionary, not
revolutionary, but the E398 was a good phone and the ROKR is too.
Just not an outstanding one.

Excellent phone with ultimate features. The only drawback is the
0.3 mp camera. The battery life is awesome. Excellent music quality
and a very good tft screen.

this phone is rubbish! how can you say it is better than the sony
walman phone, because it 'looks better and can play itunes?'. sure
on the computer itunes is good, and good with an ipod, but on this
phone- why???? the only thing good about the phone is the stereo
sound speakers. audio capacity is small. mp3s are barred at 100
songs, camera is vga (0.3 MP), menus are slow, and lots of crashes
and other problems. i bought this phone thinking it was going to
be good, but a week later returned it and got a w800 instead. the
phone looks nice and shiny on the shelves, but its just another
plasticy gimmick...

Sluggish, spongy operation, good speakers. CRASHES: I see another
reviewer has reported on malfunction, error, software problem of
this phone... mine locks up every time I attempt to enter text characters
and resets or turns off and on.

THis phone is great!! The I-Tunes is fntastic as well as the sound.
The camera and colour screen is good, and bluetooth capability is
a bonus. Very stylish, I think.

i have had this phone for a few months now, and have had to have
it replaced twice already, the sound quality is good, but the fact
that the software on the phone keeps deleting the songs from my
itunes, the bluetooth doesnt work, and every time it gets a call
or a text message through, it freezes and switches itself off, meaning
you cant make phone call or use it to communicate, which is what
it is for. i have found it completely useless and would never reccomend
it

This phone does not deserve the ipod badge. Here is a short list:
Pros: Good stereo speakers I-tunes Cons: Screen and menu system
bad Camera only VGA resolution- terrible, really Tunes are incredibly
slow transfer-takes ages!! Fiddly joystick 100 song limit despite
card capacity- what is that all about??!! Very slow, errattic menu
interface operation, especially when listening to music in the background.
The stereo speakers and I-tunes are the saving grace. If i could
have given 1 and a half i would have.. Alternative phones: Samsung
D600, Sony Errcson K750i, Nokia 3250, or wait until the ROKR E2
is released- that should be a much better phone

if u want more than 100 songs on ur phone then open up the phone
as a removeable disk/memory card. go into iTunes, iTunes control,settings
and remobe the file itunes lock then u ca get more than 100 songs
on it

After a bad start with this phone it seems to be getting better.
At first I couldnt get the Itunes to work, tried everything but
my computer couldn't read it I finally formatted the memory card
and that sems to do the trick. My only other gripe is that I seem
unable to change my mp3 into ringtones, when i go into my media
folder it is not picking on any of the music in the memory card.
It is doing my head in. I upgraded to this phone from a D500, I
fancied a change and didnt want to get the D600. I do like it and
im sure that once I search the net for help on ringtones I will
like it a lot better. Good for a change.

ok lets be real ok noone will ever listen to a 100 songs at once!
i have an ipod mini and i have 5000 songs on it but i never listen
to half of them!!!!! and all the talk about it sucking and stuff
like thatTHEY ARE WRONG!!!!!!!!! this phone is great the features
are amazing on this phone and the battery life is perfect!!!!! i
havent found one problem with the phone at all what so ever and
i have had it for a month!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that its a good phone, but i really dont understand it!
I get most of it but i just find it so hard to understand! It safes
things to different parts of the fone, like the song i download
go to the sounds pit and not onto the itunes bit!!! so confuseing!!

An amazing phone. It does everything i want it to do and more. The
guides are a little too vague though and a bit confusing. The sound
quality is amazing and the itunes capabilities save spending extra
money for an MP3 player. Rock on ROKR.

i think it is a GOOD PHONE BUT I THINK THAT IT HAS A DISADVANTAGE
BEACUSE IT DOESNT HAVE A VOICE RECORDER!!! AND THE RING TONES ARE
ALSO NOT VERY GOOD. I LOVE PLAYING SONGS IN SHOPS WHEN I GET BORD
OR WHEN IM ON THE TRAIN I THINK THAT THE EAR PHONES LOOK A BIT WIERD!!!

the only thing i like on this phone is the i tunes.. and even then
they were trouble uploading onto the phone, then when transfering
pictures to computer it continuosly adds extra songs deleting the
ones i selected! the camera is dissapointing.. the message capacity
again dissapointing.. the phone is constantly running out of battery
meaning that the i tunes feature can never actualy be used!! stupid
stupid people that made this phone i neeeded a new phone and now
i have wasted my money on a piece of junk !

This is by far the worst phone I have ever had! There are several
faults I have experienced such as the erratic crashing by turning
itself on and off and the fact that on several occasions it has
deleted all the iTunes off for no apparent reason! Takes a while
to get used to but if you want it for the iPod features you would
be much better off buying an iPod! The camera technology isn't very
high quality either. The only good feature other than the iTunes
is that it has a relatively long battery life! Wasn't enough for
me to not cancel the contract though!

The ROKR is a good size, excellent screen res and of course iTUNES
:D also it has nice touches like the light responsive keypad ie
when its daylight it stays off and at night it will come on [i initially
spent ages trying to make it work, thought it was broke lol] and
the rokr allows different vibration patterns which is cool too!
only real letdown is that, no matter how big ur memory card, the
phone only has 100 song capacity but tbh i have an ipod so its fine
lol. All in all a brilliant phone at which im v v v v v pleased
with. worth the money.

EVEN THOUGH IT CAN ONLY HOLD UP TO 100 TRACKS WHO CARES,PEOPLE WHO
HAVE IPODS THAT HOLD 5,000 SONGS DON'T EVEN LISTEN TO HALF OF THE
SONGS SO IT'S EASIER HAVING TO ONLY DEAL WITH 100 BECAUSE YOU CAN
DELETE THE SONGS AFTER A WHILE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM. THE DESING
IS GOOD, ITS STYLISH AND A SIMPLE BUT NICE COLOUR. I MUST SAY IM
DISAPOINTED WITH THE CAMERA AS IT'S ONLY O.3 BUT HALF THE TIME NO

The phone is absalute pap! the screen scratches as easiely as i
don't know wot, the i tunes is pap that it comes with. the sound
caulity is okay btu i had mine 3 weeks and suddenly the speakers
made a fizzleing noice, then all the sounds packed in, it beeps
randomly and is a pain in the back side, it thought it was rly gd,
but persoanlly if u want an mp3 built in a phone get the sony ericsson
ones they r far better.....no more motorola's for me

i have not got this phone but my mate as the camera lets the phone
down a bit but hey once u really get a camera fone no one really
takes a lot of pictures do they !!! i found it easy to use and would
recommend to anyone looking for a phone under the price range of
£100 !!!

Only gripe is the 100 song limit but as already pointed out this
amounts to about 8hours of music, plenty really. Brought the phone
for my son who asked for a phone and an IPOD for Xmas - this was
a great compromise. I have seen several articles about people struggling
to use MP3s as ringtones. I actually found it very easy - save MP3
to phone using iTUNES. Then access your media files (film strip
icon on left side of screen)then select sounds this will give you
a list of all your itunes sounds. Highlight the track you want as
a ringtone then press menu which will give you and optin to move
or copy this file.Move the file to the phone. It will then be available
for selection as a ringtone. This is a great feature and saves £3
a go - knowing the faddish nature of ringtones this will save my
son a fortune over the coming months.

I recently got the motorola e1 for christmas and i fink the 100
songs is alright because thats bout 6 hours worth and if i get bored
of the songs ill just change them u dont need like 2000 wats the
point? the picture quality is good except for wen u zoom in then
the pictures become very small wen u put them on the computer but
the large pictures r very good quality on the computer. the video
quality is opoling to be onest i have a nokia 6660 which takes much
much better videos than this fone it looks horrible i was hoping
to make sum fun movies wid the fone but the qualitys soo bad u can
bearly c anything just looks like a bunch of coloured squares i
was opaled if i could id take it back to o2 and get the nokia 6230i
which was my second choice.

This phone has been an absolute nightmare. I have returned it to
Motorola for repair on three seperate occasions. Either the keypad
locks up and none of the buttons work or the screen turns completely
white and nothing works. In order to retify this problem I have
to turn the handset off sometimes for upwards of twelve hours. The
battery meter is worse than useless, it can remain on three bars
for three days then go from two to flat in the space of three hours.
The extra battery meter with six bars is a joke as it only drops
in increments of two effectively making it a three bar meter and
about as much use as the main battery meter. Actually getting the
thing to charge is an exercise which is as frustrating as it is
badly designed, i.e. very. This is mainly due to the feeble three
millimeter plugs which seem to have little or no interest in connecting
with the contacts on the phone. Having said all of this having iTunes
on your phone is a real bonus, though this software being one of
the only parts of the phone that Motorola isn't responsible for
speaks volumes. I must add that it is possible I have been unlucky
and received a faulty handset though having read the reviews of
jazmine and mike I fear it may not be an isolated incident. Were
it actually possible I would give this phone no stars.

I dont actually have this phone but my cousin does and i think that
it is excellent! The i-tunes on the phone is great and the sound
quality is brilliant it is also quite loud. The phone has gone down
to £100 now after christmas and i would recommend anybody to buy
it. I do wish they put on a better camera though as 0.3 is not to
good a quality.

Well for £99 on O2, you get 100 songs enough for any one really,
if you want more music then go and buy an iPOD. I found the mobile
great, all you need in a phone plus a MP3 player, come on you wont
find much better than that for the price.Any way I would recommend
this phone to any one, who is looking for a cheap mobile with a
good memory for storing there music.

Very good overall phone yes it is not as good as w900i or the n91
but it doesnt cost as much either...£99 brand new on payandgo is
very good especially with the 512 card. Please note however the
phone has a vga .3 mp camera not 1.3 as mentioned below and it DOES
come with its own pair of white headphones

I had a e398 before.Definitely,Rokr e1 is not just a e398 with i-tunes!Its
a damn fast hand-set with improved display and attributes!Its very
handy!Especially the surround speakers!The 100 song barrier is the
only (-)point that i could find!Other-wise thumbs-up 2 Motorola!Keep
them coming!It gives more value 4 money than the Walkman series
from sony-ericsson!

I said that i waz gettin da Samsung e350 4 x-mas but i changed my
mind and i'm so glad i did! Pros: 1.The key illumination is very
bright and nice coloured. 2.The fone looks so elagant in real life.
3.The memory is 512mb which iz very big 4 a fone. 4.You can listen
2 da music out loud and da sound quality is excelent! 5.Very cheap
4 wat u get. Cons: 1.I had a bit of trouble workin out how 2 get
the songs on in da first place. Overall a brilliant fone and i strongly
recomend it 2 any1.

I personally say that this phone is wicked cos its iTunes is magic
and it is very fast and very easy to use. Ma girlfriend loves it,
she bought 1 and her m8s started buyin them!!!! but it is the same
as the A925 in all ways, so save money and buy the A925!!! still
a great phone mind u!!!

and its nice loking as well but if your a persone that whould have
it on all day as well as listing 2 songs most of the day you will

everyone rags on the 100 song limit. 100 songs that are on average
5 minutes long is still around 8 hours of music. why complain about
that; unless you are flying to japan or something. half the people
i know listen to the same damn song over and over anyway. people
also bitch about song upload time. just be patient and it'll be
done.

This phone is truly excellent. I dont care what the rest of you
say, maybe you just got duff ones! I strongly suggest buying this
phone, it has everything you need, itunes, camera, video recording,
bluetooth, games and loads of other really cool features! This is
such a good phone, buy it!

lower than average. extremly poor. should not buy, not worth the
hype. looks decent but for £99(O2) totaly not worth it. i would
rather invest in 6230i, chippin in a few extra quid. usb only 1.1
whats happening there, its 2006 nearly and your still using 1.1
when usb 2 is available. itunes only able to hold 100 tunes. so
dont matter about the flas card is still 199 tunes. less thought
went into this phone based on e398. apple didnt play a big part.
just said to motorloa go ahead. rumours of rokr 2. suppose 2 be
more rounder and better. i would definatley buy the phone and gladly
retur this rokr. getting it changed next week after christmas. thanks

This phone is fantastic value for money on one hand you get a 100song
MP3 player a great mobile phone and a 1.3megapixel camera all for
£120!!!(orange payasugo).I would have liked to give this phone 5stars
but it is limited to 100 songs with any memory stick and you have
to buy your own headphones. And i h8 moto's menus Overall though

I am from the ‘Woodstock’ generation (old but we invented
‘pop‘) and have had my ROKR for ten days. It is an amazing
little phone and astonishing as a music player. The iTunes interface
is easy to use and transferring music a breeze. I got a speaker
extension cable with it for an extra £4 which enables me to connect
to most of the speakers/hi-fi in my home and the quality is superb.
As a phone, it has clear sound, large usable keys and the speakerphone
is a bonus. The only draw back I have found (and it may be something
I have done wrong, and I would dearly like know how to get around
it) is that when I set a personal ring tone for a contact, if I
receive a text from them the whole MP3 I selected as a tone plays
rather than a short beep or vibrate. The video quality is good and
the camera shots excellent to use in emails. I really can’t
see what more anyone could need from a phone. 100 iTunes is enough
for anyone as most people have MP3 players as well.

The Motorola ROKR E1 offers many advantages than the average mobile
handset, the compact style is a intergral component of the phone
as for such a compacted phone it can offer much more than the imagination
could think of. Firstly we shall begin with the fact that it is
the only iTunes mobile in exsistence something rather amazing especially

Even more amazing is that all this could be yours in a 107 gram

it takes to download a standard 4 megabyte soundtrack in 30 seconds.

i got a new contract a couple of days ago and had a choice of two
phones.this one or the samsung e530.after reading reviews i decided
to go for this one but was still not sure.it arrived and i know
that i made the right decision.the phone looks good and having never
used a motorola before i found the phone really easy to use.i thought
the camera would be rubbish because its 0.3 mega pixels but the
picture quality is quite good as is the video.in fact its just as
good as my sisters nokia 6230 which is supposed to be 1.3?? megapixels.the
iTunes software is easy to use but it does take a bit of time to
download the songs onto your phone.when you have though the sound
quality is excellent.the earphones that come with the phone are
great and the sound is really sharp on them.the memory on the phone
is small but it does come with a 512mb memory card.i listened to
my songs for 5 hours straight after charging it the previous day
and it still had 3 bars of battery left.it even has a battery meter
to tell you exactly how much battery you have left.one thing i dont
like is that when u go to delete something it doesnt ask you again
if your sure u want to delete it.it just does it.so if u delete
something by accident then its gone forever.but i guess you just
have to be careful.overall i definitely recommend this phone.

everyone is banging on about the 100 song limit... yes thats in
itune... if u get the add on java world media player then you can
store and accses your songs from it... it also means you can send
a recieve music files... because i tunes wont let you... there fore
removing the 100 song limit...

at first the phone seemed great.. but now whenever i go to store
a phone number or send a text message the screen freezes on me and
i'm forced to take the battery out and put it back in.. i'm really
dissapointed in the phone.. i would much rather buy a beeper then
keep this phone.. i'm going back to a razr.. the battery life is
pretty good on the phone.. the camera is mediocre.. songs play good..
my biggest problem i have is not being able to send texts or store
phone numbers.. what kind of junk is that? ?

This phone is fantastic value for money on one hand you get a 100song
MP3 player a great mobile phone and a 1.3megapixel camera all for
£120!!!(orange payasugo).I would have liked to give this phone 5stars
but it is limited to 100 songs with any memory stick and you have
to buy your own headphones. And i h8 moto's menus Overall though
great value phone/camera/mp3player

The phone is E398 except extra button! You can flash ROKR software
to E398 and have iTunes with 100 songs limit + video recording.
Look at motorola modding in howardforums. Conclusion: if you want
ROKR buy E398 and save your money.

As long as you are not fooled into thinking you can replace the
ipod for this handset then you will not be dissapointed at all.
A lot of people it seems have returned them because they are dissapointed
it wasnt an ipod....if its an ipod you are after then simply buy
an ipod.

Its a amazing phone specially for the music lovers. U can store
upto 100 songs it is really great. Smart look with all functionalities.
I recommended this strongly. If u r not a music lover then this
will never impress u look for some other phones.

The Moto ROKR E1 is ok. You are really paying for itunes not the
phone. Nice design alright camera but its practiclay about itunes.

this phone is frankly bog standard. it does offer Itunes and is
an improved version of its predacessor the e398. frankly motorola
havent been very inventive. they should have given the fone: megapixel
camera, new look, exclusive bluetooth headset and possibly 3g technology.
if ur looking for an mp3 fone then go for: - sony ericsson k500i
/ k700i (budget) approx. £80 - nokia 6230i (medium good fone) approx
£170 - sony ericsson w550i (good looking mp3 phone) approx £230
- sony ericsson k750i (best value fotography mp3) approx £200 -
sony ericsson w800i (the ultimate mp3 phone) approx £300 or if u
want the 3g mp3 fone go for the sony ericsson w900i coming soon...

I think its just too great. "Motorola Rokr E1" really it rocks,
i am feeling that i cant stay without using it. The best phone for

this phone is really nice for itunes and has a good camera. The
games arent that good but you can easily download them for free
on websites. This phone saves buying an ipod aswell. Buy this phone

OK so you spend a few weeks looking around for a new phone. I wanted
an MP3 player and a phone so it was this or the Sony Walkmans. My
last phone was a Nokia 6670, so I thought about the 6680, but the
real difference between a phone that plays MP3 and an MP3 player
is finding the tracks! So this phone does it. If you are familiar
with iTunes it is really easy. Plug in and drag and drop. The down
side is the camera. Only 0.3Meg compared to 2meg on the Sony Erricson
or 1.3 on the Nokias. Look at it this way: If you want a real MP3
buy an iPod, if you want a real camera buy a 8 mega pixel Olympus
E500! If you want a real camcorder etc.. The obvious thing about
a mobile phone is you have to compromise. Loud music = battery dead
quicker! It's a great phone.

First off, can people please stop saying that you should save your
money and buy an E398 instead. The E398 has an inferior screen,
no video capture, and can only play mp3's in order, with no support
for album/artist sorting. True the mp3 player on the E398 is better
than that of a Samsung or of a Sony Ericsson (not including the
walkman phones), but it is nothing compared to the power of a dedicated
music player. Besides, have you seen the cost of a 512mb Trans Flash?
As for storing more than 100 songs, and using songs as ringtones,
then you use the built in mp3 player. When you connect your phone
to the computer, it appears as a hard drive. Put your songs into
the data\audio folder to store additional songs/ringtones. This
is where your songs downloaded from the net go as well, so drag
them back into itunes to have them converted and put into itunes
on your phone. Not ideal, but that would be apples fault. The price
difference between the E398 and the E1 is not too huge, I have seen
the ROKR with 512mb card for under £150, or for £189.99 including
£60 airtime! The E398 costs less, but I'd go for the quality everytime.

The ROKR has a lot of good features such as: excellent battery life,
stores 100 songs from your i-tunes library, large colourful display,
the loudest speaker i've ever heard from a phone so you can blast
yor tunes!!, colourful flashing lights when you receive a call,
bluetooth and good predictive text. There are a few bad points which
is a shame, it should be possible to store more songs, the phone
slows down if your playing music and want to do other things at
the same time, such as send a text, although it's good that you
can at least use other functions while listening to music unlike
samsung phones etc. I think the only major bad point about the phone
is: It takes 30 seconds per song to transfer music from your PC
to the phone using the cable supplied... X that by 100 and it takes
a while. A few people have mentioned that it's just a modified E398...
Yes motorola could and should have been more imaginative but it's
still a very good high spec phone and the colour of this model is
more appealing. I would advise anyone to get this phone, it's smart
clever and useful.

I think this phone is wkd, i had a motorola v635 befor this one,
had it for 6 mnths and the speaker broke, also phone wudn charge,
with any luck this one wont be the same.... Myself i prefer Nokias,
I went out in the search for a cheap mobile with a big memory and
bluetooth, i came across this phone in a shop and thought hmm nice
big memory, bluetooth and it looks pretty smart, and to top that
i only payed £130 for it brand new result ay, it wernt til i gt
home tht i realised it had i-tunes on it, which is good cuz i have
an ipod aswell so i now use my ipod as a sterio 4 my room and my
phone for one the go! so im happy, all in all i like this phone,
its quite sexy and its so simple to use and to tx! also i think
the coloured lights on the side when it charges and when u get a
call r amazing (simple things) bt i wud recomend this phone :)

Okay, people say it is just a Motorola E398 with iTunes. Correct!!
But what in the world is wrong with that?? the E398 get's an excellent
review and is a good phone, yes? and the ROKR E1 is the SAME phone
with iTunes, added bonus don't you agree? The only problem people
seem to have with this phone is the hipe that was created due to
high expectations of the iPod phone. If you forget about that and
think of the phone as a phone like the E398 with the added iTunes,
it is an amazing little phone with lots of standard features such
as bluetooth, MP3 ringtones, MMS and video messaging. All you need
in a phone AND it's got iTunes which yes it isn't as good as a real
iPod, but it is 10 times better than loading songs onto your nokia
6230 and having to search through the list of songs etc. Great little
phone which is sadly slated because people expected far too much
from it. The way I see it, if your that fussy and want great music
and high speed transfer. Stop being a cheap skate and buy a REAL
iPod!!!!!!!!! But for those of us who just want a few tracks to
listen to and not bothered how long they take to download this is
a gift from the heavens!!

Well i bought this phone because i lost my old one, but this is
an awesome phone, the sound is much better then a samsung D600!!!
Only the ipod structure is slow.. and when the battery life becomes
to an end it crashes! But dispite of that it is a wonderfull phone
with a long battery life !

Waste of money if you ask me. It's basically a E398 with bigger
storage. If you like the styling want to listen to MP3's just buy
the E398 can be for under 100 pounds these days on PAYG and buy
a 512mb card. Basically your paying for the ipod name and small
features which in my book doesn't justify the large cost of this
mobile when the E398 does everything the ROKR E1 does at over half
the price.

You are better off with an e398. Transflash memory is slow, and
it is pretty pointless. You cannot use songs as ringtunes, and any
songs you download from the phone internet cannot be played in itunes.
would have been better if it used a faster memory form, a better
camera, and had more connection between motorola and apple.

well the motorloa rokr e1 is pretty much the same as the e398. exept
it does not have a mp3 shortcut button next to it. its looks and
features are exellent. i have a e398 and the sound of its dual 3d
speakers and it's internal subwoofer are one of the clearest sounds
in a mobile phone. apple have taken this phone and have started
competing in the mp3 mobile phone range now. i am going to get one
of these phones because thier lightwheight and just sound awesome.

this phone keeps crashing! this happened with my friends as well.
you are about to do somthing and it just goes bleep and the batrtery
cuts out. Its quite difficult to use and is very slow! also has
short battery life. i wouldnt reccomend it.
