Motorola RIZR
Z3 / MOTORIZR Review
Phone
rating:
In a nutshell: The RIZR Z3 is a slide version of the superslim
RAZR phone. It's a great-looking phone, especially with the cool
blue backlighting on the keypad. The RIZR has a much higher specification
than the original RAZR, with a 2 megapixel camera, a high quality
LCD screen, a music player (with an optional Bluetooth stereo headset)
and an expandable memory for storing loads of songs.
The Motorola RIZR Z3 (or MOTORIZR, pronounced "riser")
is a sliding phone with a look reminiscent of the MOTOKRZR
and other RAZR-styled phones. In fact, it has almost the same specification
as the KRZR, but in a different design. It's Motorola's first sliding
design phone available in the UK. With a dedicated camera key on
the side, and a 5-way navigation key, soft keys and on/off keys
on the main body of the phone, you can access most of the phone's
functions when it is in the closed position. Slide open the phone
to reveal the full numeric keypad. This is the same style of keypad
used for Motorola's other superslim phones, and is easy to use.
With a blue backlighting, the keypad looks very stylish when in
use. At 16mm the RIZR is not as slim as the world's slimmest slider,
the Samsung D900 (13mm), but is pretty
slim, and looks good.
The RIZR features the latest version of Motorola's
user interface, and is perhaps less awkward to use than older Motorola
phones. The RIZR is not the highest spec phone available, but holds
its own against other phones in this price range. The camera is
a 2 megapixel device and is as good as anything Motorola have produced
previously, but not in the same league as the latest top-of-the-range
phones from other manufacturers. There's a video recording option
and an MPEG4 video playback feature in the media player. The display
is a good quality TFT screen with 262,000 colours and a good resolution
of 176 x 220 pixels. Again, this is trailing behind the best screens
from Sony Ericsson, Samsung and Nokia, but is good enough. The music
player is good quality and handles a wide range of music formats,
including MP3, AAC and AAC+. An optional Bluetooth stereo headset
is available.
The RIZR supports Bluetooth wireless connectivity
as well as USB. Whilst internal memory is limited to 16 Mbytes,
the phone's memory can be expanded up to 2 Gbytes with a MicroSD
memory card. The phone is quad band and has good battery life.
Overall this is a nice-looking handset, but one
that lags behind the competition in most areas. It's nice to see
Motorola widening the appeal of the RAZR family by adding a slide-design
phone to the range, but this isn't a phone that can match the very
best from Nokia, Samsung or Sony Ericsson. Still, if you like the
Motorola design and aren't a slave to specifications, then this
could be a great phone for you. One word of warning before buying
though - this isn't the most robust phone, and a number of our users
have had problems with the phone breaking or freezing. The price
of the handset has dropped considerably since launch, so if you're
willing to take the risk it offers exceptionally good value for
money.

For those of you who gave the phone a poor review because of the
memory. Are you not smart enough to understand you need to buy a
2gb card for it? Thats as good as some iPods. What else do you want?
If you can't figure out how you shouldn't have a phone. Do an Ebay
search on "microSD memory card 2 GB" I don't really like the software-
and am about to hack it. I would like better reception but the features
like my podcasts to my tv shows I watch on it takes it soo much
farther than my last nokia. and it cost me 50 bucks. so

Nothing wrong with the way it looks but not particularly easy to
text on. Motorolas usually aren't. That's basically all I use a
phone for, texting. Nearly all the other specs as wasted on me.
The screen got dusty on the inside in no time and not impressed
with the camera quality. And it has no Scandinavian alphabet! A
couple of the keys are in unfortunate and inconvenient places, so
you may well be in the middle of a text and suddenly find you've
actually sent it, incomplete, by mistake, when all you meant to
do was to backspace!!!

I BOUGHT THE NOKIA 5300. HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE VOICE DIALING. TMOBILE
WAS NICE ENOUGH TO SEND ME THE RIZRZ3. THE PHONE LOOKS GREAT. I
HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE MEMORY CARD. THE PHONE WOULDNT READ IT. THE
FONTS ARE VERY SMALL AND THEY CAN'T BE MADE TO A DIFFERENT SIZE.
THE SCREEN WAS ALWAYS DIRTY WITH DUST. I ONLY HAD THE PHONE FOR
A COUPLE OF DAYS. WHAT I REALLY HATED ABOUT THE PHONE WAS THAT I
USE ANOTHER PHONE SOMETIMES AND IN ORDER TO GET THE SIM CARD OUT
YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE MEMORY CARD. IN ORDER TO TAKE OUT THE SIM
CARD YOU REALLY HAVE TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO LIKE SLIDE
IT OUT OF A LITTLE SLOT WITH A PEN TIP UNTIL YOU CAN GRAB IT WITH
YOUR FINGER. GETTING THE MEMORY CARD OUT IS DIFFICULT. YOU HAVE
TO USE TWO HANDS VERY CAREFULLY SO YOU DON'T DAMAGE THE CARD. I
SENT THE PHONE BACK AND I GOT THE 5300 AGAIN. THIS TIME THE VOICE
DIALING IS GREAT. NO PROBLEMS AAND THE PHONE IS MUCH MORE USER FRIENDLY.
LOVE THE 5300 OVER THE RIZR

I got this as an upgrade to a phone that was killed by a swimming
pool... The phone is really nice. Love the size. The slider works
well. Some parts of the software have been updated with some neat
features, HOWEVER: I have had numerous lock ups, and blocking out
of parts of the phone, only to have to shut it off and back on to
where I could use them again. The phones software really lags and
it just overall slow and jerky. They REALLY need to re-write it
or give an update. For this reason, I am ready to send it back to
customer service and get a Pearl. Some have said to look into a
software update, but I tried that, and it was up to date already...
So, nice looks, but poor software.

It does what it meant to do quite well. But it’s no where
near a stand-alone camera, even a vga camera. The only reason I

I have owned the Motorola Rizr (pronounced riser) Z3 for almost
2 months, and as my 8th mobile phone, I have been very impressed.
Looking at the hardware side of the phone first it is very well
made, with excellent use of materials. The glass screen cover has
yet to show any scratches, where my old phones had numerous light
scratches after a few weeks, so it would seem no screen protector
is required if you want to keep it in good condition. The body is
made of metal coated with a soft touch material (this can be clearly
seen in the battery cover); this combined with the weight of the
phone (which is slightly heavier than a plastic phone of the same
dimensions) makes for a high quality feel when holding the phone.
The sliding mechanism is great, especially as it is Motorola's first;
the front panel snaps up and down with little effort (it is spring
assisted) and there is a raised bump on the screen for your thumb.
This makes it easily as good as Samsung and far smoother than the
Nokia sliders that have been released to date. The only downside
I have found so far is that fingerprints show up easily on the glass
screen cover, and need to be wiped off quite frequently. Software-wise,
the idiosyncrasies of the Motorola operating system do take a little
getting used to, but not to the extent that I would want to change
to another phone. Certainly it is not as intuitive as Sony Ericsson's
interface, and does not appear to respond to keypresses as rapidly
as say the SE k750i, however it is no slouch and is certainly very
useable. I think it will be very interesting to see how the Z6 fares
with the new Linux based system. I have read of two issues here
and elsewhere: one where the clock does not show up on the standby
screen, and one where dust collects under the screen cover. My phone
was purchased as an O2 upgrade in Feb 2007 and displays the time
on the standby screen in either analogue or digital format (this
can be selected in Settings->Personalise->Home Screen). As for the
dust issue, this has been happening to me - a lot of dust had collected
under the display cover within a couple of weeks - perhaps because
I had been using tissues to wipe away finger smudges! It is dissapointing
that the screen has not been sealed well enough to prevent dust
getting under there, however I have found that it is very easy to
clean, so I have provided the following instructions: WARNING -
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS IF YOU ARE AT ALL UNSURE, AND DO NOT ATTEMPT
THIS IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO RISK VOIDING YOUR WARRENTY!!!!! Turn
off your phone, flip up the front panel and place the phone face
down on a soft surface. Use a Torx T5 screwdriver/bit (available
from some hardware/electronics stores or online) to carefully unscrew
the small screws from the reverse of the front panel. Do not loose
these!!! If you turn the phone over you should now be able to lift
the top of the front cover away from the display, then slide down
slightly to free it from the bottom of the display. Be very careful
at this point as there is a small ribbon cable connecting the front
cover buttons to the rest of the phone!!! This can be unplugged
from the display board by carefully lifting it away, you may need
to use a small screwdriver to gently lever it up but in my case
this was not necessary. Now use a blower brush (available from any
good camera shop) to blow away the dust from both the LCD display
and the inside of the front cover. Then simply reassemble the phone
by following the above instructions in reverse. Voila - dust free

This is my second one. The first one i had constantly froze, the
screen wouldgo white and then nothing could be done, it would come
back eventually. Also I had a big problem with dust buildingup under
the screen. Got my new one thinking it would be better because i
like the design of the phone etc. There is no freezing with the
2nd one but the dust its beginning to build up again. This is very
annoying, so i am now searching for a new mobile.

This phone is extremely easy to break, and a simple tap of the phone
may freeze it. When it is frozen, it's impossible to turn off until
the battery is removed. This is hard to do, as the battery compartment
locks up and is very fiddley. On the other hand, it has a cool flickering
Bluetooth light.

This phone is absolutelysuperb in design and motorola have done
an excellant job. I am used to using slide phones and it definately
beats other slide phones in this department. The software is the
same as the KRZR but both are excellant phones. I would recommend
these to anyone. You hear about the screen on the ouside of the
KRZR cracking but it only happens to those idiots who put the phone
in there front or back trouser pockets. Ladies, it also depends
on how tight your jeans are! buy this phone, honestly is is tops!!!!!

Lately I've been a Sony Ericsson power user (K700i, W800i, K800i)
but hav decided 2 try this cool looking Z3. I stop using Motorola/s
after my V8088 clampshell as alternatives seemed better. I only
took notice to Motorola again after the release of RAZR V3 & SLVR
L7 but they're not featured packed. The Z3 is excellent with the
MP3 w/ A2DP Bluetooth and a reasonably good camera. Sadly no FM
radio. The OS is still not the most ideal but it has some winning
abilities. The built quality surpass all the other brands that feels
plasticky. The screen is one of the brightest & sharpest I've seen
but wish it could be larger. The unique magnesium keypads & blue
glow is really cool. Not for the simple minded. Lastly it is a power/designer
phone for those who want to stand out... and it did... my friends
were all admiring the looks of it!

Brought this phone last week in black from Carphone Warehouse, am
really pleased with it, its a good solid design and seems easy to
use. It looks very classy and quite a few of my friends asked where
I got it. My only problem was on Christmas eve when it suddenly
stopped charging and giving strange error messgaes up, also the
blue charging light on front did not light up. Took it back to Carphone
who gave me another phone which seems ok, but to be honest the blue
charging light still does not come on the front (even tho owners
manual says it should) and I fully charged it when I got it out
of the box but a few hours later it wanted charging again so am
having my doubts now..any advice on this matter would be helpful.
But in general I really like the phone.

I haven’t had a Motorola phone since the Star TAC 501which
at the time was probably the best looking phone on the market. To
my knowledge the first clamshell on the market I know I used to
get looks of envy when everyone else was using their bricks. The
Motorola RIZR Z3 gives that same impression it looks great, it has
a good solid feel without being heavy, it has PURE STYLE written
all over it. O.K it has it’s drawbacks the menu system my
not be the most straightforward, the camera my not be the best on
the market but as a phone it works perfectly well. Who cares about
all that you wouldn’t worry about a pair of shoes that hurt,
or a pair of jeans that were to tight, as long as they looked good
and this phone looks FANTASTIC.

Ive been waiting to upgrade my handset for some time now and have
tried the usual suspects (Sony K800i, NOKIA 8800, N80, N91 and Samsung
D900) and to be fair, they all did what they where supposed to (make
calls)but they had that much other stuff on them, that they stopped
being mobile phones. Had this phone for 5 days now. Used the software
for the first time yesterday. As such only two small gripes:firstly,
the screen stays black after about 1min, you then have to press
a button or open the phone to view the time. This is a bit of a
pain especially if you use your phone as a time piece. Secondly,
the supported software isn't compatible with Itunes. Again, not
a show stopper but if you want to play and edit tracks, a much easier
interface would help. Other than that, a very sexy, stlyish, easy
to use mobile phone (it can even make calls!!)

Had this phone for a short period of time now and have to say that
I am very impressed ! Yes Motorola's OS isn't ideal but this seems
to be an improved version over that found in the V3 and V3i. Sound
quality excellent, good screen, camera is more than adequate at
2MP, and battery life is superb (I previously owned a Nokia 6131
so know how quickly batteries can drain !!). Slide mechanism is
really smooth and phone is nice and light. Would heartily reccommend
to anybody.
