Motorola RAZR2
V8 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The RAZR 2 V8 is even slimmer than the original
RAZR, and uses premium materials in its construction to update its
look. Novel features such as an external touchscreen for playing
music, and CrystalTalk technology for enhanced call clarity make
it well worth a try. The camera is average, but the music player
is good, the memory is good, battery life is acceptable and the
phone offers a good all-round mix of style and functionality.
Review:
September 2007.
After 3 years, the original Motorola
RAZR is still in the shops, and that's a rare achievement in
the mobile industry. The RAZR spawned various follow-ups, including
a range of 3G phones, but now a new milestone has been reached with
the launch of the RAZR 2 V8. The V8 is even thinner than the original
RAZR, at just 11.9mm thick, and when opened it's astonishingly thin.
Yet it's heavier than the original, which gives it a really substantial
feel. Part of the reason for the heaviness is the use of stainless
steel in the casing. The phone also uses premium materials such
as chrome and chemically hardened glass. Although it looks similar
to the RAZR, it feels more upmarket, like Nokia's
premium 8800 Sirocco. The keypad is larger than that of the
original RAZR, and the keys are more tactile too.
But the RAZR2 is not simply an upgraded RAZR phone
- it is a quite unique device, as we will explain. One of the most
striking features of the RAZR2 is the size of its external screen.
It's an ultra-high resolution 2 inch display, which makes it the
best external display in its class - possibly in any phone. It's
also a touchscreen, making this phone the first of its kind. The
touchscreen controls appear on the external screen, like the LG
Prada or the iPhone, and are
context-sensitive. For example, if the music player is on the touchscreen
can be used to select tracks, etc, meaning that the phone can be
used as a media player even with the clamshell closed. Other functionality
is available through the external screen, such as reading and replying
to text messages. This is a really nice concept. When not in use
as a touchscreen, the external display shows information such as
the date and time, or incoming calls.
The V8 is also the first commercially available
Linux-based phone. Linux is an operating system used on computers
(especially webservers and workstations) so putting it on a mobile
phone isn't an obvious move. However, the result is a fast, responsive
system that supports multitasking well (so you can play music whilst
using other phone functions, for example). The phone has a slight
tendency to freeze, but much less than Symbian phones.
Another new feature in the V8 is Motorola's new
CrystalTalk technology. This is a mix of hardware and software improvements
that are designed to enhance voice clarity and reduce background
noise. Does it work? In a word, yes. The V8 offers call clarity
that beats previous generations of Motorolas and puts it up there
with the best from Nokia, Samsung or Sony Ericsson.
The media player installed in the RAZR2 is Windows
Media Player® 11, which is an excellent music player, with wide
support for virtually all music formats. You can create and manage
playlists from the phone, and synchronisation with a PC is simple.
It's a shame that there's no radio though, and also the bundled
headphones aren't the best on offer. The memory available is either
512 Mbytes or 2 Gbytes, depending on which version of the V8 you
choose. It isn't expandable, so we'd recommend that you choose the
2 Gbyte version, as you won't be able to change your mind later!
The RAZR2 also has a camera and video recorder,
but at just 2.0 megapixels and no flash the camera is at best average.
The V8 supports Bluetooth wireless connectivity
(version 2) with support for Bluetooth
headsets, and also microUSB 2.0 connectivity, giving fast data
connections with a PC.
Battery life is acceptable, although the big LCD
displays do tend to eat power. Depending on how much you use the
phone, you'll probably get between 1 and 3 days' use between charges.
Summing up, the RAZR2 V8 is a really interesting
phone - far more than just a slimmed-down V3. The external touchscreen
is a really nice concept, the CrystalTalk feature works well, and
the media player is excellent. Connectivity is good and so is memory
(provided that you choose the 2 Gbyte version). Just the battery
life lets it down.

- 2.0 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom

MPEG4 format)

phone just runs out of battery. And coming to quality of the music
it gives thats the best. Its clamshell is the best and you just

i bought the v8 a week ago and so far i am quite happy with it.
my only concerns are that it gets finger prints on it REALLY easily
since its got such a glossy finish to it. however it looks magnificent.
i think the camera's brilliant and takes sharp pictures. the phone
itself is fast however the battery life is quite dissappointing.
i use it moderately and still the battery only manages to last upto
a maximum of 2 days and i did the 3 full charge and drain and still
the battery is still weak. all in all a nice phone with brilliant
features. shame about the battery life tho.

This phone is OK, but I only got it as I prefer flip phones, when
I measured it against my V3 it is wider but you do get used to that.
I've had a few minor problems with it like it just randomly switches
off sometimes, or gets stuck on the voice command, but it's nothing
that switiching the phone off then on won't fix. All in all the
phones pretty cool the buttons are easy to use (some phones have
buttons that are so close together its annoying) it's simple to
navigate (if you've owned a motorola before) Camera is average no
better or worse than V3 mp3 player is good the only thing I would
complain about is the colour, it's like an ugly off blue/black.grey
colour they should've come out with a pretty pink one, like they
did with the V3.

I am 6ft 6in and 20 stones therefore I have big hands and fingers,
which have found it almost impossible to find a mobile phone that
I can text on without hitting more than 1 key at a time -- so I
emailed all the main mobile manufacturers and only Motorola replied
and suggested the RAZR2 V8. When I first held the V8 I was amazed
at how heavy it was for a very thin phone - this being due to the
stainless steel frame -- and I LOVE the BIG keypad especially the
big buttons !!! Being over a certain age (50), I am NOT interested
in the touch-screen functions which is just as well because -- if
you protect the screens with the screen protectors that are sold
everywhere you look on the internet (Ebay etc) to keep your phone
looking like new -- the touch screen buttons DON'T WORK !!! I was
told this by a German seller of V8 leather cases, so I asked Motorola,
and after some dodging the questions etc they DID CONFIRM that if
the outer screen is covered by ANY screen protection -- be it a
leather case with a thick plastic screen cover, or the ultra-thin
screen protectors from Hong Kong etc, then the touch screen functions
WILL NOT WORK !!!! If you listen to music all the time and send
and receive a lot of texts, then this could be a problem, but as
I only use my phone for the occassional text and very occassional
phone call, it should not bother me too much -- but it DOES for
some reason ??!! WHY am I paying for a function I CANNOT USE, as
I am Registered Disabled and unemployable after 6 lumbar-disc operations
in the last 12 years, and as the phone will have to last me a long
time (until they take out one with even bigger buttons !?) this
phone WILL have screen protection and might also have a leather
case, but certainly a silicone case or crystal case etc, as I want
to keep the phone looking like new - because that is why it was
made from chrome, stainless steel hardened glass etc -- to make
it look good and SHINY !!! I have not taken the cellophane protection
off yet, as I am still "learning" where everything is and what button
does what, as after a certain age your memory does not keep information
as well as when I was in my 20's !!? Plus I am on 20 opiate painkillers
daily !! I hope the phone is as good as it looks, as it looks stunning
:-0 I now need to find some screen protectors and a silicone case
on Ebay ..... Paul

The good points: It has two nice big clear displays. You can assign
a photo to a contact, so when they call, their photo appears on
the external screen - however, when they text, this does not happen
(WHY DONT MOTOROLA ENABLE THIS?!). It's very easy to text on, it
has big enough keys and they press in nicely, the space button is
bottom left and easy to press (unlike SE who do it bottom right
which is awkward texting with your right hand). The phone looks
very good in my opinion, it looks sturdy, not plasticy. The mp3
player is good. The bad points: The vibrate is very very weak, and
the highest phone volume is also pretty quiet. The phone has cut
out on me twice during a car so far, which isn't promising. The
software is rubbish. My pc recognised my phone the first time I
plugged it in, once I added the software, it wouldn't see the phone,
then it did, then it didn't, everything kept jamming up (don't bother
installing it). When a text message arrives, it flashes up on the
external screen, but if you check it five mins later, you can see
the clock faintly on the external screen, but no message symbol
or missed calls. The external keys on the side of the phone don't
press in easily at all, so although they're a good feature, using
them is frustrating. The camera is not very clear at all for a 2mp
camera. Taking photos indoors is grainy and rubbish. I'm enjoying
the phone so far, but it's frustrating that designers don't cover
all the bases. I usually buy SE phones, I thought the menu might
look a bit childish, but it's fine, the features and menu screens
are fine. The phone doesn't flip open very easily. I think that's
everything so far...

Since the early days of mobiles and the classic Nokias,i think i
can honestly say that i've never had a phone that i've been happy
with and the Razr2 V8 does nothing to alter that view. As in other
reviews here,i've had a problem with : short battery life, having
to recharge every day if it gets plenty of use ; powers down too
often and have to remve battery to get any response ; had it four
months and some of the keypad buttons aren't responding when writing
texts. These are just a few areas that bug me but other things that
are documented do too. Can't give it any less than one star so thats
for how it looks with the power switched off. I've only got six
more months for my contract to run, gives me enough time to find

K850i. Bad bad mistake. Frequent crashing, bugs, crackling and noise
during calls, and poor build quality forced me to return it after
6 days. I now have the Motorola V8 and couldn't be happier! VASTLY
SUPERIOR to the Sony Ericssonn K850i in every conceivable way -
I can now see why everyone dislikes Sony Ericssons. The build quality
on this beauty is superb! The call quality is probably the best
I've ever experienced on any mobile phone. Excellent user interface
that is one of the most configurable and intuitive UIs out there.
The camera isn't the best, but that doesn't matter because i have
a digi cam. The V8 scores highly in all the important areas - call
quality, reception, build quality, user interface, and overall quality.

I only have two gripes about this handset. 1) The Motorola phone
tools NEVER work, and I've owned a v3i and a K1 before this one,
and I've NEVER been able to get the software to recognise any of
them. 2) And this one is particular to the RAZR2. When you receive
a call, the phone shows the caller ID on the external screen. The
only problem is that Motorola decided to use a white ( outlined
) font on a white background, so that it is almost impossible to
read. Why they did that is a mystery, and there is no way to change
it.

I was very excited for this phone and awaited its arrival. For a
few days I loved the novelty of the outer touch screen and being
able to read messages on the external screen. As well, I loved the
fact that the phone stored 3000 plus messages (other phones barely
stored 600). After a while, the phone began to reveal its problems.
It becomes very slow sometimes during texting especially if you
recieve another text when typing. The touch keys on the external
screen take a while to respond. It also has the tendency to freeze
when answering phone calls and won't respond to the power off button.
You have to remove and reinsert the battery to restart. Vibrate
feature is very weak and you can barely feel it unlike other Motorola
phones such as the V3. Battery life is really pathetic and frustrating.
It is comparable to the battery of nokia 8800. It really isn't suitable
for people who aren't sitting in one place all day next to a charging
outlet. To charge, you have to remove a bit off the phone and its
left dangling to the side while charging. The problem here is that
if you have short or stubby nails, its a bit difficult to remove.
Or like me, if you have manicured nails, your nails will chip off
or break in attempt to remove that bit. Although stylish, it isn't
practical at all.

OK, I am hoping it is just the phone I got and battery that is causing
the issues I have. Battery life is about 8-10 hours, but I do text
a lot and that drains battery life like crazy, but still, 8-10 hours
is horrible. Getting a replacement battery as soon as Motorola gets
them off backorder and sends it to me... With all the reviews about
the battery life, I am not surprised its backordered. Now the problem
with the phone is the predictive text. I have it set to learn new
words which it does. Like :-) for instance. 111 will give me ...
at first, so I have to press 1 and hit down until i get the colon,
then the hyphen and the the close parenthesis. Once that is done,
the phone now has it memorized. Great! Next couple days, no problem,
111 now puts :-) as the first option for predictive text. Then it
happens, usually about 3 days after I stored a new word, it no longer
has it in memory, so 111 puts ... again, and clicking down does
not bring up the :-) it brings up ..) only c hanges the last character
so you have to go back and fish through all the characters that
the number 1 has to make the :-) again, so it will have it in memory
for another 2-3 days. Quite annoying, anyone else experience this?
I am hoping it is just a faulty phone and not the razr2 in general.
Other than that, its not too bad.

superb, and everything on it is very clear, even in sunlight. One
of the things I like that no one else has mentioned is the font.
It is crystal sharp and large enough for anyone whose eyes aren't
what they used to be - like me. Another thing is the CrystalTalk.
As noise around you increases, so does the speaker volume, and it
somehow filters out annoying background noises to leave you listening
clearly to everything the caller is saying.

The V8 is great ! in my opinion the best designed phone on the market.
its just so classy! ive had this phone for a week now and everything
on it is perfect. The MASSIVE external screen is one of the best
features on this device and makes reading and replying to text messages
so easy. The camera could be better but i hardly ever take pictures
on my phone so it doesnt really matter! Fantastic phone !

This Motorola is a great device! First, the design of this RAZR2
V8 is just wonderful, so class and it seems to be unbreakable! The
screens are wide and beautiful. The menu offers a quick navigation,
and you can modify it like you want (change, delete, create icons).
It's a real pleasure to have a conversation, the voice is clear
and loud ! The memory of 512 (420Mo for the user) is enough for
me! The camera and music player are good. But, I find that battery
life could have been better... 3 days with a moderate use is a little
bit short... Anyway, it's an excellent phone! Thanks you Motorola!

This is the worst mobile I have ever bought. It's slow to use, clumsy,
it has a poorly located charging port which makes texting and calling
awkward when the mobile is plugged in, it's uncomfortable against
the ear during calls, and appears to be easily breakable. I had
always thought Motorola classed style above content, and now I have
the proof. I will never use a Motorola mobile again. Ever. This

I bought this phone yesterday and was unsure whether to go for this
or the new walkman phone. I chose this as it looks far better and
has similar features. The camera is ok, good enough for taking snaps
of friends etc and if you want a better camera, just buy a digital
camera, not a phone. The music player is very good, even if the
memory is a little small. The touch screen on the front makes the
mp3 player far easier to use, as tracks can be switched without
having to open the phone. I like this phone so much, it may not
have all of the latest features but it looks great and does everything
it says it will do brilliantly!!

shutting it ends the call in speaker mode is a bonus! Couple of
times Ive been on speaker, closed the phone to end the call (as
I would normally) only to realise I have to re-open the piggin thing

Umm Graham its lighter than the V3i WRONG! its longer and heavier
but it is different to the V3i. I know this because i previously
had a V3i before i upgraded. Simple example on the V3i you can use
the speaker phone with the handset closed. if you do the same ont
his one it will end your call. The select key is the wrong way round
and you cannot customise the menu screen like could before. Are
you sure you had a V3i prior to your recent upgrade? don't get me
wrong it is a good phone on its own but the similarities between
the V8 and V3i are very few and far between. The texting also takes
a bit of getting use to.

Well I'm very happy with it. I have read that you can't use your
own message tones (wrong), that you can't have it ring AND vibrate
(wrong) and that its not a big improvement on the old v3i (again
wrong IMO). I wanted basically the same as my v3i (which I loved)
but with better menus, camera etc. And that is exactly what I got.
Its lighter, a bit longer, thinner and looks fantastic. The screen
is much better quality, its faster and much easier to read. Yes
it only has a 2 meg camera, but if you want quality photos BUY A
CAMERA. As for battery life, thats common to most mobiles these
days, as they do so much more. The mp3 player is great, and I would
recommend it to anyone who has a V3i like me for ages.

Not Sure what happened to the previous review i had submitted but
anyway here goes. Upgraded from my V3i-i do like motorola phones
cause of the little quirks they have like reminders when you have
a missed call or text, a vibrating feature that you can feel from
another room etc etc. Anyway it was between the V8 or the G600 and
after reading the reviews on here i chose the V8. It is a good phone
but it slightly disappointing if you were expecting something like
the V3i but jam packed with upgrades. Its so different you might
as well be using a Nokia for all the similarity which i found really
disappointing. Good points are the talking phone reads your texts
out etc, bluetooth is stronger and better, better camera and the
music player is good as well and easy to put stuff from your Pc
on to the phone. Bad points are vibrate is not as strong, for some
obsucre reason you can read your texts on the external display and
even reply but you can't check who called-have to open up the phone
which is really annoying. Can't use the speaker with the hand set
closed which you could do before. Phone book guide doesn't actually
match what you can do on the phone and you cannot personalise the
phone as much as u can do before-really annoying. It is a good phone
but i just wanted something like my V3i but better.

home screen and the options button but i only get the option to
change the profile. Anyone else had this problem and know a way
that i can resolve this? I think there must be a way to reverse

ever sent back. For the first day liked the novelty of the touchscreen
on the music player. The novelty wore out very fast. Whilst stylish
and feels a nice quality I found it to be rather a large phone when
opened out. Ringtones and themes are boring. I did find it easy
to just drag and drop mp3s into it. I find the menu system to be
really outdated it seems to take an eternity of pressing this button
and that to do a simple action. I sent it back and went back to

First one kept powering itself off whilst using it, then restarting
as if it was re-booting itself. Never made a single call on that
phone as the problem manifested itself immediately. That was replaced,
as I thought it was a fluke. The second one just powers off occassionally

Well, it's only taken Motorola just over 2 years, but they've finally
managed to come up with a V series phone that's got a screen and
key pad that's as good as the original design. Having tried the
V3 when it first came out, then the V3i and V3x - all changed for
SE models as I just couldn't use them in daylight, I'd given up
on ever owning what I consider the best designed phone ever - UNTIL
NOW! OK, so the camera is poor and the memory and music playing
capability is a joke, but these days who doesn't own a digital camera
and MP3 player? And the texting? Superb - the predictive facility
is miles ahead of the competitors. Mind, I think they're having
a laugh with 330 hours battery standby and 470 minutes talk time.
The decimal point is definitely in the wrong place! But it does
improve with a few weeks of running completely flat and fully charging.
Mine's gone up from charging twice a day to once every 2 days with
fairly heavy usage. Incidentally, I note that the previous reviews
seem to alternate from terrible to fantastic with not too many in
the middle. Could this have something to do with the supplier or
network? As Vodafone have not yet fully approved this phone for
direct supply through their own outlets, I got one as an upgrade
from Phones4u and, surprisingly, considering their involvement,
I haven't had any problems with it yet. This is a first in all my
family's dealings with them, so maybe they've finally got their
act together as well as Motorola. In short - a cracking phone for
talking and texting and the coolest looking phone around at present.

I've had my V8 for about six weeks now, and after some initial reservations
I've grown to really love it. First off, the phone looks great with
its high-gloss finish that incorporates both metal and glass. I
was initially surprised at how wide the phone is, but being so thin
means it fits into your pocket easily and you won't even notice
it's there. I initially experienced problems with the battery life,
but after T-Mobile replaced my handset and battery the standby time
has greatly improved. I've had no experience of the 'orange screen'
mentioned in some of the other reviews, but it sounds like these
users have faulty handsets and should get them replaced. For those
who haven't used the V8 before, the external screen has touch sensitive
keys ONLY when the music player is in operation. At all other times
the external screen can be used to read text messages and send brief
replies using the keys on the side of the phone. The phone's menu
system is slick, easy to use and a huge improvement on previous
Motorola phones. Texting is simple and fast with a great predictive
system - it automatically learns the words and phrases you use frequently
and offers them up as suggestions while you text. The 2 mega pixel
camera is a bit disappointing, but if like me you prefer to use
a digital camera anyway this isn't really a big issue. The PC software
was initially a pain to setup, with the instruction manual offering
little of no help whatsoever. It's worth persevering though, as
the software is actually very easy to use once you've got it working,
and data is quickly transferred from PC to phone. In conclusion,
the V8 is a slick, user friendly phone wrapped up in a fantastic
looking exterior. While it may be lacking in mega pixels, I'd still
recommend this to anyone who's after a no-nonsense, good looking
phone.

A good phone that I didn't like to start with. The menu's are fairly
slow and not particularly well animated (compared to say, SE or
a non-smart phone Nokia), and can be very long-winded - it seems
you sometimes you have to go through about 6 or 7 different obscure
options to do something simple, like change a ringtone or switch
bluetooth on or off. Also, the lack of any normal ringtones is a
pain, and the camera isn't the best. Battery life is also reasonably
average - 1 to 2 days standby tops. However, that aside, the phone
feels very solid, and the materials used are excellent. The internal
screen quality is superb, and the phone feels great to use. Drag-and-drop
is nice too via the phone's USB port/lead meaning that you don't
have to install Motorola's horrid software if you don't wan't to.
If you have had (and have liked) Motorola's before, you'll love
it. If you haven't, give it a punt - you may well be suprised.
