Motorola SLVR

Motorola's
4-letter nickname Department strikes again! After
the RAZR
and the
PEBL, here comes the SLVR ("sliver").
It's just a sliver of a phone, geddit? In fact at just 11.5 mm it
really lives up to its name, being even thinner than the V3 RAZR
(though not quite as thin as the Motorola
L6.) The SLVR is much like a RAZR for people who prefer conventional
candy-bar shapes. It features a similar chemically-etched
metallic keypad to the V3, and also uses toughened glass to protect
the display. The design, materials and thinness of the device makes
for a striking appearance.
Functionality of the SLVR is greater than the RAZR,
in fact it almost matches the performance of the more expensive
V3i. The display is a high quality
active matrix display with 262k colours and high resolution. The
camera is a low resolution VGA camera but with the benefit of a
video recorder, and there's a built-in MP3 player that can handle
both MP3 and AAC format. Ringtones are good quality and support
MP3 format, and there's a good range of additional features including
a handsfree speaker, email and quad band.
Connectivity is good, with full support for wireless
Bluetooth connections, as well as USB, although infra-red is not
supported. The SLVR accepts Transflash memory cards, so the
memory can be expanded up to 512 Mbytes - very useful for storing
MP3 tracks and videos. Battery life is good.
There really isn't anything to complain about,
although menus are typical Motorola and may confuse or frustrate
those not used to them.
Features
of the Motorola L7 include:
- VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x digital
zoom
- Video camera
- MP3 player (MP3 / AAC format)
- Display: TFT 262,000 colours, 176 x 220 pixels
- Handsfree speakerphone
- MP3 ringtones
- Messaging: SMS, EMS 5.0, MMS,
Instant Messaging, email (POP3, SMTP, IMAP2)
- Push to Talk
- Java games
- Downloadable screensavers, images, animations
and sounds
- Picture caller ID
- Phone book (500 entries)
- WAP 2.0, GPRS Class 10
- Web browser
- Connectivity: Bluetooth®, USB, SyncML
- Memory: 5 Mbytes plus Transflash memory
card (up to 512 Mbytes)
- Quad band
- Size: 114 x 49 x 11.5 mm
- Weight: 96g
- Talktime: up to 400 minutes
- Battery standby: up to 350 hours

Screen not visible in daylight as led screen not that bright. Where
as the lcd screen of the Nokias means daylight hits the clunky bits
of liquid crystals so has high contrast in all light conditions.
The SLVR is much like a laptop display - indoor use only. The snag
with a mobile phone is that you might want to take a call in the
street, or look up a phone number. Likewise access to a number is
far faster in a Nokia than with the Motorola SLVR L7. In a Nokia
menu system, you press arrow down to get to the first in the list,
then the Letter to get to that section in the list then press Green
phone to call or button to text. With the Motorola SLVR L7 there
are far more steps one additional step is what sort of message do
you want to send (that one is missing in the Nokias). There are
no short cuts unless you assign a speed dial sequence (which both
have). Seems Motorola SLVR L7 is designed to be hung around your
neck as art, not to be used. It is as good as not having MP3 player
because it is not is a usable form (compare iPod and getto Blaster).
The best place for this phone is in a visual design magazine not
your pocket.

==More Show than function== True cost ~£160 (with O2 chip, 512MB).
This is a georgous phone but if you are used to Nokia's you wont
like it. The menus are a bit aultistic but pretty. The ring tones
are poor except for the 'HelloMoto' one or any other MP3 you want.
High quality VGA display. Battery lasts 5 days between charge. The
speaker plays the music well. 3.5mm headphone support is a joke
- but BlueTooth headphones due out 'soon'. It pulls in a signal
just as good as my old Nokia workhorse. You have to buy a memory
card for it (£30 for 512mb) as the internal one is only for ring
tones. The Phone at CarPhone Warehouse cost £90(+£30 1year cover
otherwise £116) with the BlueTooth earpeice. Everything is done
via the miniture USB connector, even the charger. It has Anti Hacking
on the BlueTooth unlike many other phones - which means other beople
cannot look at your private photos etc. The Cam has 4x zoom but
no flash and is not that good in poor light. The case is made of
black scratch proof titainium, so it is back pocket proof when you
sit on it. The guy in the shop tried to fold it in half and it was
not having it. Everything is scratch proof. The key pad is only
suitable if you have fingernails and unsuitable if you have stubby
fingers. A nokia is better for high speed texting, This has its
own version on T9 and seems to be better with chooing words - like
it shows a list versa hitting the 'next' key on a nokia. You cant
get away from the fact that Nokia are world leaders for a good reason.
This phone is a work of art, but not that usable. A Nokia would
be balanced in your hand so you can operate on the key pad at speed.
The SLVR is not balanced so you are both dealing with correcting
the balance and pressing the weird keys. The 'screensaver' are hi-res
and nice animation. The phone has 3 skins 2 of which are ace. The
manual is poor. It covers the basics only. The phone can connect
to an email server and you can connect to a POP3 or MAPI4 server
such as a Corporate Exchange server - this is not documented anywhere.
You can syncronise your diary and folders as well - also is not
documented anywhere. Corporate buyers would not dream of getting
Motorola phones, for sure not this one. But on the other hand for
me, it is VERY thin, Strong, lasts forever on a charge, can play
my MP3 and is recognised in WinAmp5.2 as a device to rip CDs to.
When you plug it into Windows it is recognised and is just a removable
drive, just like a USP data Key. File Transfers are very fast. When
I go out on my Bike is will fit into my leathers and I wont noticed
it or get damaged. It is a third the thickness of my Nokia. It connects
easy in the differnt world zones. Funny how Brand image can over
ride product quality and innovation. This is a real nice phone which
has more to do with style that usablity or functionality. There
are no games with it. Get used to the idea of buying all the basics.
The true price of this phone so far was £90 for the phone, £30 for
the 512mb SIM card, and £39 for the years full protection. The headphone
addaptor was unobtainable. I love it and forgive its failings.

Contract Upgrade that was sent back within 3 days. There are two
common themes with this phone : The handbook is rubbish and skips
major parts of the phones menu. Headphone support is weak for the
MP3 player. Half the USB to 3.5mm adapters dont work and Motorola
dont even list headphones on there website shop. I went back to
Nokia where they provide 3 basic things : Website support ( Motorola
make it hard for you to contact them ) Third party add-ons for Nokia
that dont exist for Moto. A Decent Phone

Having had the phone now for a month, all I can say is amazing,
I knocked a star star off as I am with Orange and whilst the customer
service is great their software adjustments tend to suck a wee bit,
back too the phone. Having come from the V3, one of the first things
I did notice was the speed increase in the response to menu selections,
texting and call answering, the memory card is great having full
length music on that for the iTunes bit (not used daily but used)
this also shows off what is a fantastic speaker setup lovely rich
tones, I have used the phones memory for cropped mp3 tunes (20-30
sec clips), have now gotten plenty of tracks assigned to different
groups of people and individuals, this is where a nice function
has been added with previous Motorola phones you could only use
the first letter for searching the phone book, now you can search
using the first few letters if you so desire, so useful when there
is a couple hundred entries; still of slight annoyance is the fact
you cannot store landline\mobile\email address under a single name
entry still shows as multiple which make the phone book bloaty (suppose
thats what the catagory options are for though). I would say the
keypad is good and nicer to use than some of the nokia's and sony
offerings of late, still if you come from a V3 it may seem small
as that was a huge pad. Battery life I haven't managed the claimed
14 days, with limited daily use at the start, with home and work
being in a low signal area did manage 10 days so have been more
than happy with that, to get rid of the annoying low battery bleep
that definitely needs a longer interval it is a quick change of
ring style to vibrate or silent until you can get it too the charger
but like I said with a 9/10 day interval your not gonna hear that
too often. Motorola have again given plenty of customisation options
for the button allocations so you can get quick access to the most
often used features, very useful as I tend to used mine almost like
a PDA. Finally I think is how this phone feels, the V3 and too an
extent the V600 all felt a touch delicate\fragile, this on the other
hand for a small phone especially feels solid and weighty, as for
the screen thrown about in the car and a rucksack the screen doesn't
have a single scratch so I can only assume that the folk who have
complained of scratching must give it real hard time. **footnote
~ not of much use up here (top scotland) anyhow but I aint sussed
the push to talk or IM on this phone (orange software?)**

Lovely designed phone that is slim enough to keep in your pocket
without drawing admiring looks. I am on my second handset as the
first had a fault which silenced the ring and text alerts after
being switched on for a few hours. Phone was alledgedly repaired
by Carphone Warehouse but was returned with same fault and several
scratches on the case. Phone does everything that I need and does
it well. Loud and clear earpiece, sensible ringtones, clear screen, long
battery life. Buy the Motorola Mobile Phone Tools and you can even
edit and import Mp3 ringtones easily. A (much) better camera for
the L7i whenever it appears would be welcome.

POSITIVE Looks – beautifully slim, which apart from looking
striking also has benefits in that there are no unsightly bulges
in pockets when stowed. The metallic materials used make it look
very sleek and smart. I have the silver version that has a benefit
in that it doesn't show fingerprints like the black version except
on the screen. Weight – despite being slim it still has a
satisfying weight which gives the impression of good quality build
and material. Keypad – the etched keys are a pleasure to use
with great response and a very satisfying press smart keys –
1 at side of phone that starts the camera, which is handy for a
quick photo opportunity. And another that gives quick access to
ring style selection eg soft or loud Screen – is beautifully
clear and crisp at 262,000 colours. Camera – a lot of people
complain because the cam is only vga and not megapixel but you will
not find any phone with a megapixel cam in this price bracket. For
a vga cam the pictures are sharp and clear and it has a useful night
mode in lieu of a flash. Shortcuts – can be personalised and
motorola phones can show icons on screen that remind you of the
newly programmed shortcuts. Voice Activated Dialling – i find
this handy as it means i don't have to go through the process of
finding a contact in my address book. Note this can only be used
when contacts are saved in phone rather than sim memory. NEGATIVE
iTAP – takes some getting used. it is unlike t9 predictive
text where, if introducing an unknown word, then you can spell it
out letter by letter. with itap you have to spell part of the word,
accept it then spell the remaining parts in turn. It's slightly
long winded but the new word will go into the dictionary so you
don't have to repeat the process and you do get used to it. Keypad
Backlight – this blue light only comes on when ambient light
is low. Unfortunately without this light it is hard to see the key
symbols which can become a pain when texting. If there is a way
to force this backlight on, apart from placing your hand over the
sensor on the top of the phone, then i would be pleased to hear
about it. Memory – is low at only 5mb. If you only wish to
add one mp3 to personalise a ringtone and store few pictures then
you're fine. But, if you want to use the phone as an mp3 player/digicam
then you WILL need to expand memory with a transflash card. I have
a 128mb card that cost £10 from ebay. Memory is expandable upto
512mb. Software, Headset and Data cables – none are supplied
with the phone but the handset manager software can be downloaded
from various websites, a data cable can be bought for £5 and a moto
headset for £10 from ebay (a headset adaptor can also be purchased
for £5 that can be used with your usual headset) Video – you
can only record 30 seconds which i figure makes this facet of the
phone quite redundant games – all 3 games supplied are only
trials that allow only a minute of game play before asking you to
upgrade to the full version. Contacts – you cannot enter more
than one number under one name. A mobile, work and home number wil
all have their own entries. Personally though i prefer this because
it means one less button press but moto should have at least given
the option. OVERALL i really like this phone. A lot of complaints
are made about things that will only take getting used to after
a brand change eg the moto menu so please discount them unless you
don't have the time to learn a new way. Admittedly i often choose
my phone on looks rather than features. I have a dedicated mp3 player
and a digital camera with video recording and therefore do not need
these things in a handset. If all you're interested in doing is
texting, calling and admiring looks then purchase this phone.

Hey! Did anybody else not get a software CD with this phone? Apparently
there is a motorola software CD which allows you to crop parts of
songs to use as MP3 ringtones, thus eliminating the STUPID design
fault which only lets you store one MP3 as a ringtone (because it
has to be stored in the phone memory!!!! WELL DONE MOTOROLA!!) If
anybody knows where to get hold of this CD I, and im guessing alot

Got this phone after my Nokia 6310i was stolen. I am disappointed
in the Motorola phone as it has poor signal reception compared to
my former Nokia. Also find myself constantly having to recharge
the battery and worse, when it needs charging it beeps. That beep
has woken me up in the middle of the night several times now. To
the point that one night my husband wrapped up the phone in a towel
and put it into the microwave oven so we wouldn't keep hearing the
beep. Have not found any way to turn off this beep warning. Key
pad very slow and difficult to use due to very flat letters/numbers.
In summary, if I could exchange it for a Nokia, I would.

to see wots wot....a lot of things said in some of these reviews
are incorrect probably simply due to oversight......however unfortunatley
the reviews telling of bad signal tracking seems to be correct ,
and as its obviously THE main issue sorta spoils the whole phone.motorola
STILL seems to have not sorted out the issue of attatching a ringtone
to a specific name.....you can do this however your alerted with
the selected tone not only for a call but also a text message so
you HAVE to check if its a call or a text as theres no other way
of telling which it is....silly oversight, though if im wrong and
somebody knows of a way to have an attatched tone for a contact
and still be alerted to a text in the same way as every other text
id appreiciate the help...other than this so far phone looks good
feels good.....but spoilt yet again by a nicely priced phone being
supplied WITHOUT software data cables or a memory card ....which
to purchase sepertely would cost around an extra £60 so a nicely
priced phone turns into a rather over priced peice of technology
way behind the competition at a simular price range.....NICE TRY

This phone is excellent. All you guys in India, you are not going
to get 3G for the next 2-3 years anyway so why throw away money
on a N Series or 6680? If you want a 1.3 plus camera go for a digital
camera not a camera fone. as far as this momma goes, it's gets 5
stars. Comes with bundled 128 mb of micro SD memory (you can upgrade
to 512 at $30 only), stereo handsfree headset (Music + answer calls
on the move), and MPT 4.11 sync software(You can tarnsfer your outlook
data as phone book entry). The phone looks drop-dead gorgeous-sexy,
and comes for less than Rs 12000. Dont believe any of the cribs
you notice in prevoius reviews abt slow bluetooth or freezing. I
jus fell in love with this phone. The only things needed would be
a FM tuner and EDGE. (Motorola, Pay Attention!!). My Advice? jus'
go and get one. You will look cooler with the phone on you!

Firstly, yes Sam, there is a light sensor. You see on the top side
of the phone at the right there is a hole for a carry strap? Immediately
to the left of that is a small light-grey-ish colour square - that
is the ambience sensor. Put your finger over it and the backlight
will come on when you press any keys! I notice that some of the
earlier reviews complain a lot about this phone - I really have
no idea why. This is my first Motorola, and I am finding it about
as easy to use as my previous Sony Ericsson! It actually has a lot
of very intuitive features, you just need to spend a bit of time
discovering them. I had concerns about iTAP - it sounded much worse
than T9 (predictive) which I was currently used to - but it is actually
amazingly efficient! 5 minutes getting used to it and you will love
it. I think this is a fantastic phone, best one that I have ever
seen both aesthetically and functionally. I have absolutely no complaints.

it would be and much better than my last nokia 6230. Cameras on
phones are a little pointless in my opinion as most people have
a digital camera for decent photos and those you do take on a phone
generally get deleted after a while anyway. I do have one little
problem tho. The blue backlight on the keypad is not always coming

I picked up the phone yesterday. I have previously had Nokia or
Sony phones. In general this is a good, stylish phone. What really
lets it down for me though... is the fact that the screen always
goes blank / black, when you lock the keys, or even when you set
a screensaver. Even the most noddy Nokias / Sonys have a basic dimmer
function to save the screen, or a clock-type screensaver; basically
you can't tell whether the phone is on or off when it hasn't been

I'm used to Nokias, had Nokias ever since my first mobile phone
10 years ago: This is the first Motorola I've had and after seeing
it advertised during the Big Brother commercial breaks I upgraded
my Nokia 6230 to it. Personally I don't like slide or flip phones
so I chose this instead of the V3i. I think it's a great looking
phone, it's lightweight and it's got a lot of good features. I really
like the colours used to produce the case and the keypad. Sure,
it's a vga camera but I've already got a 4Mp digital camera so I'm
not too worried about this. I've also got an ipod so I'm not going
to use it as an MP3 player. Predominantly I want something I can
call people from, text people from and pick up my e-mails on. This
is where my problem lies: I don't find the menu as easy to use as
Nokias and I don't find the predictive text as easy to use as Nokias
version. Also there's no option to re-program the soft keys, for
example so you can access the calendar or calculator by pressing
one or two buttons. I realise these are things I'll probably get
used to but I felt it worth mentioning. So overall I feel it's a
good phone but not as easy to use as a Nokia.

extra features. Several factors let it down...first of all the buttons
can be a bit fiddly at times, but nothing to get worries=d about.
The biggest desigh flaw however has to be the bluetooth. This is
pretty poor as whenever anyone has tried to send pictures it has
often taken so much time it was cancelled. To be honest tho...it

I had this phone for 2 days, and i have to admit...overall it wasn't
a bad phone. I think Motorola could have done more in regards to
the metallic finish, as although the phone has a metal casing it
does not feel like that, and the back of it is just plain black,
so for exterior style, its not too bad overall and can be lived
with. However, with so many phones out there that are small, i felt
this phone was bulky, Yes its slim, but its still a large phone.
Personally i would prefer the V3i over this. As although its a razor
and the razor has been out for ages, its a better looking phone..and
you do get a better mettalic finish to it. The Menu i found difficult
to use, and i use 2 lines on my Sim so i bought the L7 as a generic
handset, the phone did not support this capability, so i returned
it. Overall i did think it was a decent phone, has a decent set
of features, but there are many other phones out there that are
smaller and are more feature packed. The Bluetooth is a waste of
time, a serious design flaw as cannot reliably connect to a Bluetooth
headset, and to transfer numbers together is not possible, so i
had to go through my entire phone book one by one to transfer. The
type of people to buy this are the style conscious user...but would
like a good set of features, and have a phone that looks good. For
this reason alone, i advise not getting this phone, opt for the
V3i, or if you can afford it the 8800. Nokia also have their new
l'amour range, which is worth checking out.

I have no idea the rubbish about this phone being junk (they're
probably nokia/sony lovers) but this phone is almost excellent in
my books. It has all the features a decent mobile phone should have,
it came with the proper software AND cable to synch with (if you
didn't either you're tied in with a service provider which doesn't
give it to you or you got gyped). While this is a 3G phone so don't
expect to connect to 3G networks with it you do get 2.5G connectivity
(provided your service provider has it), with a twist that it stores
video in 3GP format and plays it back too. While comparing it to
my old Nokia 6610, the menu interface leaves much to be desired,
but you'll probably get past the diffrences very quickly. The camera
is somewhat on the lousy side, but then again if you wanted a good
camera go buy a digital camera; and it seems to have some issues
with it's bluetooth module locking up (requiring me to power cycle
the phone every once in a while). Feature packed and highly reccomended
for NON 3G phone users.

oh dear! This is a lovely looking phone, and I talk as someone who
owns a nokia 8910i, so I know a bit about style over substance,
but after getting one yesterday I have three observations. Firstly,
you need to PURCHASE some software to syncronise the phone with
your PC contacts etc. (with nokia and sony this has been free).
Secondly, the phone supports mp3 playback but there is no headphone
socket so you have to buy bluetooth compatable headphones. These
two points I can live with since the phone is primarily a phone,
but the third point is the killer (and the reason mine is going
back). YOU CANT LOCK THE KEYBOARD AND STILL ANSWER CALLS!!! This
is a serious flaw in any candy bar style phone. Its got to go! If
you never put your phone in your pocket or handbag then get one
they are beautiful, otherwise expect some interesting bills! ADDED
LATER: Just been back to the shop, apparently you can lock the keypad,
it just doesn't mention it in the documentation!
