Motorola KRZR
K1 Review
Phone
rating:
Warning: although this phone looks great, and initially
we liked it, it has become clear that the KRZR has many reliability
and durability issues. Of all the phones currently on the market,
this one seems to be the most likely to fail in some way. We have
to say that you'd be KRZY to buy it after reading the reviews on
this page. Instead, consider the RIZR
Z3, which is almost the same as the KRZR but in a slide design
(and more reliable), or the 3G Motorola
MAXX or V3XX.
Now that superslim phones are everywhere, Motorola's
offerings in this department were starting to look a bit old-fashioned,
even though it was Motorola's RAZR phone
that started the whole superslim trend. Motorola strikes back with
the KRZR K1 (or MOTOKRZR as the company likes to call it). The KRZR
is a clamshell phone, like the RAZR, and shares a lot of the RAZR's
technology, but whereas the RAZR was a man-sized phone, being quite
wide despite its thinness, the KRZR is a much narrower phone that
fits better in the hand and is more ergonomic all round.
The styling of the KRZR has been updated, with
a reflective glass-coated surface that makes the KRZR stand out
from the crowd (and acts as a magnet for fingerprints, by the way!)
Although it's a fashion phone, it has a well thought-out design,
with a functional (if small) keypad, and good ergonomics. However,
the glass used is fragile and can scratch, crack or shatter, even
when treated carefully. We have never before encountered a phone
where so many users have reported a broken screen. This is obviously
a design fault or manufacturing defect.
In addition to it's pretty looks, the KRZR has
high spec features too. The main internal display is a high quality
TFT screen with 262,000 colours and the same resolution as the RAZR:
176 x 220 pixels. The external display is rather poor, though, being
of inferior CSTN technology which fades in bright sunlight. The
integrated camera is 2 megapixels with an 8x digital zoom and a
built-in picture editor, but no flash. There's also a video recording
capability at CIF resolution, with a maximum duration of 25 minutes
per clip. The absence of a flash is a disappointment, and limits
the use of the camera. Next up is the music player. This supports
MP3, AAC and AAC+ formats with stereo output to headphones via mini-USB
or wireless Bluetooth. The KRZR isn't the best music player phone,
as there is no support for drag and drop file transfer and only
mono output from the built-in loudspeaker. Still, it does the job.
MP3 tracks can also be used as ringtones.
There isn't a lot of internal memory in the KRZR
- just 20 Mbytes - but the good news is that this can be expanded
using a TransFlash
memory card up to 2 Gbytes. As already mentioned, connectivity
options are Bluetooth and USB (no infrared). Fast internet access
is available via EDGE. Usefully the phone is quadband, so will operate
globally. Battery life is average. The KRZR does suffer from having
the unintuitive menus that non-Motorola users find so hard to use,
so Nokia and Sony Ericsson users watch out! Texting is particularly
tricky. There are also various software issues with the KRZR. These
seem to depend on which batch of the phone you try, but you can
get a flavour of the kinds of problems people have experienced by
reading the user reviews below.
In summary, the MOTOKRZR is a cool fashion phone
and being Motorola's first new superslim phone for about a year
it would be a natural choice for RAZR users looking to upgrade.
The KRZR doesn't excel in the photographic or music departments,
but it's certainly an all-round performer that is more unisex in
form and more ergonomic to use than the RAZR. However, the problems
with the glass breaking and the software errors that users have
experienced mean that we have to recommend that you avoid this phone.

PROS: *Very stylish *Good camera *Good sound I like the way the
pre-empted text input works CONS: *Very delicate - the screen gets
hair-line cracks/scratched easily, although this hasn't spoilt the
apperance much. *The text messaging can be slow. As I've never had
a moto before, I keep pressing the wrong button. *It's easy to hit
the wrong button. *Either I haven't worked out yet, or the phone
can't show a picture when someone rings. *The wallpaper disappears
frequently, leaving a blank screen and you have to put it back again.
I've not used the MP3 as I've got a iPOD. Would I get this phone
again.......Yes, probably.

- it will not charge, from reading other reviews of the older Motorola
V3's this appears to be a common problem with the Motorola - I will
be returning this phone and will probably not replace it with another

The battery life is shaky at first but after charging fully a couple
of times is lasted ages! Camera quality is superb!! Have had this
phone now for 1 and a half months. No scratches yet on the glass
and as long as you look after it then you shouldn't get any. Music
quality is also outstanding!!! and it can store hundreds of messages

that appeared out of nowhere three weeks after purchasing it. It

out a contract with orange which seemed like a good deal, until
in the first month the camara stopped working! so they sent me a
new one, but 2 months later i dropped my phone on my laminate flooring
and the screen cracked. then i had another new one only for the
camara on that one to go again. then another one and the memory
card reader wouldn't work, and then for the nxt one i had the screen
kept cutting out and my phone couldn.t access the memory card or
take photos or save them. i am really dissapointed with the phone
i chose it for its sleek design and the capability of the phone,

This phone is rubbish. I had it for 2 days before I returned it.
I mostly use my phone for texting but the KRZR is so slow it could
not keep up with me...it took so long to send a text I gave up trying!
The memory is absolutely rubbish too.If you want a phone that's
quick with texting then this one is not for you.It also annoyed
me that I constantly had to wipe off finger prints...it looked filthy
all the time! I've now bought the Samsung D900 and I'm much happier!!!
My only regret was that I did not check out this site before I purchased
the KRZR. I could have saved myself a lot of time and effort!!

I have has this phone 30 days and up to today no problems - I took
it out of my handbag to find a crack from top to bottom! I rang
carphone warehouse wher I purchaes it from, to be accused of damaging
it myself and told I would have to pay £40 to repair it or claim
on the insurance which has an excess of £25. I pointed out it had
only been in my handbag (in a phone pocket) and was told that it
must have hit on something else in my bag! Motorola apparantly will
not issue formal notification to the suppliers that this is a common
problem, and the glass that is used in the repair is the same as
the original glass used - so the cracking may happen again. The
advice given by supplier - have it repaired (at a cost)do not put
in a handbag or in your pocket and buy a case!! Until this problem
is sorted I would not recommend that anyone gets one of these phones.

pain! Second I bought a headset, not a blue tooth just a regular
headset to plug into the usb jack. It doesn't work either, even

The phone is pretty / stylish BUT the synchronisation with Outlook
destroyed my PC data. Motorola support blamed the software company
even though Motorola provide the software. Even when you can get
the data onto the phone the Categories do not synchronise. The blue
tooth does not recognise my Motorola headset or my V3. The phone
hangs when I try to open MMS pictures. The shop tested 8 phones
and found 6 to have similar problems. In summary, it's nice to look

This phone is great! I have always been a Nokia fan and have never
changed. But I needed a new phone and all the Nokias around at the
moment look so dull. So I thought i would take a risk and go for
something completley different. I was worried about purchasing this
phone due to some reviews I read saying how awful it was and that
Nokia users could not figure it out. But I have to disagree. I found
it easy to use, yes some bits I had to figure out but 99.9% of it
was a piece of cake. The screen quality is great and the camera
is good. It has no flash but if i wanted a proper camera I would
have just bought a camera. If you are like me and want a phone that
works well with a few added extras then this is a great phone. The
only slight downfall is the general speed of the phone is slower
than what I am used to and all finger prints marked. Appart from
that the battery is good, features are good and overall look of
the phone is good. Definately worth a look.

that the front of the phone had cracked from top to bottom. I was
told by tmobile that I would have to pay to have it repaired, trouble
is after reading a lot of the reviews on here a lot of people are
having the same problem and I wonder if it could be a fault on the
phone so whats the point. This phone isnt a patch on my old samsung
d600 which was an outstanding phone in every way. The ringing style
often changes on its own because of the buttons on the side pressing
in my pocket which is very annoying. I find the menu a real pain

You want a portable gaming device, buy a psp" - this is a phone!
I compeltely disagree about the poor memory, although seeing as
you can transfer pics etc to a pc, how much memory do you need?
Im on t-mobile and ive never had a problem with the signal, even
on the underground at times! I can't believe how many people have
trouble pressing the buttons! Also, I had no problems installing
the software - insert the cd, press next a few times and its done!
The battery's been great so far, although maybe that will change

Motorola finally have launched the long awaited sequel to their
RAZR, and it's bound to cause controversy in the phone community
as it seems that people either love or hate the phone! The K1 looks
great, it's mirror-like surface bound to attract attention (and
possibly unwanted attention, too). It's a smaller size than the
RAZR and is easily pocketable. Many RAZR purists will hate the K1
for it's 'feminine' look (disagree), it's smaller screen, or the
fact that it fingerprints easily, which is rather annoying, but
I can live with it. The user interface is improved from the V3 range,
being smoother and more thought out, although the general layout
is still the same. The phone book has been much upgraded from my
previous phone, the V620. Response times aren't as perfect as, say,
a Series 20 Nokia phone, but they come close. The music player has
a few annoying faults. First of all, the volume is too low for built
up areas. The DAP leaches your battery and the phone has to be ope
ned up to do anything. The built in player is better, but can't
read ID3 tags. If you want the player to automatically go to the
next song, a playlist has to be set up, or the phone goes back to
'normal mode' and has to be told to play music again. When someone
calls you the ringtone plays in your earphones and you can press
the button near the right earbud to answer a call while leaving
your phone in your pocket :). Unfortunatly, the camera is the biggest
letdown on the phone. Pictures are blurry unless you hold the camera
extremely still. Without a flash, the camera is extremely poor for
night-time photoing. I'd take the D900's camera any day, but I like
the flip design. Battery life is OK, not brilliant, but the fact
that the phone can charge from a PC's USB is very handy. Like all
phones, playing MP3s and running Java apps will eat up your precious
battery life. Finally, the reception isn't brilliant - the phone
keeps dropping it's connection when indoors unless I'm nex t to
a window. Everyone elses phone seems fine... maybe it's due to the
fact I'm with T-Mobile though, apparently their As a whole, I'm
fairly pleased with the phone. I could have got a smartphone, or
a D900 for it's camera, but I wanted a good looking flip phone which
wasn't bulky, and the phone definatly succeeds in this department.
While it's MP3 player has it's faults, it gets the job done. If
you're looking for a phone that is a monster, both in size and features,
go buy a SE P990i or something.

I only ever wear jeans! I think I'm the only person in the world
who finds the little 'ticket pocket' in the right side pocket of
a standard pair of jeans the best place for a phone! I find the
vibration very noticeable when the phone is tight against my pelvis
when it's in the little pocket and the sound of the ring doesn't
fight to get out and be heard and it's so easy to pull out of that
pocket too. I used to have the little Samsung SGH-N100 and its predecessors
for years because they were apparently the only phones of that size
with a flip front - which I feel is essential, especially for that
little pocket, otherwise you're into locking the keyboard..... nah!
Then came the cameras and all of the other stupid features I don't
want in a speaking instrument (if I want photos I have an excellent
camera which does the job better!) so the phones got bigger. I next
had an O2 X3 when that was the smallest flip-front but it was so
thick it fitted the wee pocket in only half my jeans. It was unreliable,
too, because it kept crashing. Next I got the Samsung SGH-D600 because
there just wasn't a flip-front the right size so I gave up on my
ideal spec and went for the phone with the best reviews. It's been
a great phone, but the slide has crazed me! Whenever I go to pull
the blasted thing out of my pocket it slides open, answering the
call, but by the time I have it out and in my hand it's slid shut
again and cancelled the call! I had to call back nearly every caller!
NOW I have this gorgeous little K1! The slimness and narrowness
with a little extra length make it the best fit ever in my jeans
pocket! OK, the predictive text is a bit cumbersome compared with
the Samsungs and the Menu is a bit of a maze to find your way round,
but other than that it's tops! Amazing voice-recognition - you can
just tell it to "Call Tom Brown" and if you've written "Tom Brown"
in your phone book it will "read" it and recognise your speech command!
Spooky! I Bluetoothed my phonebook across from my Samsung with no
effort and my ringtone and wallpaper too. I don't care what the
camera's like nor the MP3 functions, but the phone is great with
very clear sound on a call. I also find it very stylish (not that
I give a toss!) and not the least bit "girly" (some people must
have very fragile egos!). I'm going to take a bit of selling to
in a year's time - to beat this phone for me will be very difficult
indeed!

have both insisted its a customer mis-use and not a weak glass fault
or a flaw in the design (i.e. putting such a large piece of glass
in a place that gets everyday knocks) I am now left with a phone
that has a crack across the screen that will cost £40 to repair

I bought this phone a few days ago, completely SIM-free (as with
all my mobile phones) and I have to say that I'm very impressed.
I'm a Sony Ericsson fan, so the only other Moto phones I've owned
are the V3 and V3i RAZR phones. They were both excellent, but this
phone easily beats them. The first thing you think when you look
at it is 'wow'! This definitely has to be the most stylish phone
I've ever used. A lot of time and effort has gone into the design
of this phone, but then that's what you can expect from Motorola.
The screen is excellent as well, though not quite the quality of
my SE K800i. However, it is very bright and clear and I've no complaints.
I've seen a lot of people, usually previous RAZR-owners, complaining
about the size of the screen on this phone - well, it is slimmer
than the RAZR's, and it would be impossible to make the screen the
same size! You can't have everything! But the resolution is still
the same, so it is smaller but less pixelated than the RAZR handsets.
The camera takes excellent photos (in daylight only, unfortunately,
due to the absence of a flash, and the video camera is also excellent.
The keypad is beautifully-crafted like the RAZR handsets, and just
as easy to use. It is also easier to use than the RAZR phones, due
to it being slimmer and easier to hold in your hand. There are several
improvements that have been made since the V3i, for example, being
able to store more than one number under each contact and still
being able to view the multiple numbers when sending a text. One
thing that infuriated me with both the V3 and V3i is the fact that
it was possible to store many numbers under one contact, but if
you wanted to text a number other than the default number for each
contact, there was no way to do this. The predictive text style
has changed a little, and it is easier now to use predictive (for
me anyway) as the system is now similar to that used on Sony Ericsson,
though not quite as user-friendly. There are also some new skins
as well, which is maybe not so important, but it's nice to have
some changes! I can't comment on connectivity as I no doubt won't
connect it to my PC - my K800i will always be my main phone and
I always use that to take photos for the main reason that the camera
is far superior. Nor will I be using it for music as I have an iPod,
but I have transferred a few MP3's onto the phone to use as ringtones,
and an M4P, and they all work perfectly and audio-quality is very
good and an improvment on the RAZR phones. The internal memory isn't
too generous at only 20mb, but I've bought a 512mb memory card on
eBay for £10 so I can't really complain! In conclusion, it's an
excellent phone. It won't win any awards for the camera or music
functions, but then it isn't meant to. The phone hasn't been marketed
as an excellent camera phone, or a Walkman phone, so it shouldn't
be criticised for not being either of these things. If you want
a Walkman phone, go for the SE Walkman collection, or if you want
an excellent camera phone, go for the SE K800i. But if you just
want a super-stylish, high-quality handset that does exactly what
it's supposed to, then the Moto KRZR K1 is an excellent choice.

I have just acquired the motokrzr K1 on the recommendation of a
mobile phone delaer. The phone has several pluses. It looks elegant;
wouldn't agree that it's meant for the feminine gender only (why
would some guys associate the blue colour with the feminine gender?).
It's small and thin - fits into your shirt's top pocket as well
as your pants without leaving a huge bulge like most nokia phones
and clamshell phones. It's light and fits inside your pants without
weighing it down. The camera takes pretty good pictures - I could
use them for my wall paper. Tends to be slightly grainy compared
to the pictures taken by my Nokia 6680. It has most of the standard
features of a good high end phone. It's not a 3G phone but who needs
one? Its minuses: keys on keyboard too flat - makes me keep punching
the wrong keys - good for ladies with long nails. My laptop couldn't
detect the connected USB cable, even though I updated the motorola
phone suite. Still no drivers for it yet? Vendor could transfer
files using bluetooth connection. Volume of mp3 player seems to
be a bit low - couldn't increase it. Polyphonic ring tones seems
to be missing some high notes as compared to when they were played
on my motorola L6.

Having loved the V3i but not being able to purchase due to an existing
18month contract with vodaphone, I was quite excited when I found
out that my contract expires just days after the K1s release. I
immediately put down an order with O2. Sure it does what it's meant
to and all, sure it seems quite stylish, but there are a few things
that really are starting to annoy me now: -The screen. Why so small?
You take 2mp shots, but the screen really doesnt to the pictures
any good. Screens in clam-shells are shrinking for some reason,
it's really annoying. -UI. I don't know, if you have used a Motorola
before you will be at home here, but I seriously cannot get used
to the basic, fustrating menus here. After using SonyEricssons for
over 3 years now, the interface here is really a step backwards.
One more thing, guys may want to seriously avoid the phone. It looked
appealing in pictures, but when I had the phone in my hand, I realised
that I had made somewhat of a mistake. It's like holding a stylish
mirror in your hand. It's thin and tries to be somewhat elegant.
Dudes do not want to be holding this phone in a crowd, people will
think you mugged a 13 year old girl or something. If you want a
solid, heterosexual phone then pick up a "Gun Metal" V3i or something.
I would not recommend this phone to many people to be honest, not
in the blue colour being shown around on the net. In America a Silver
variant is available, so if you really want the K1, then I suggest
waiting for that model which looks noticably better in my opinion.
