Motorola E550
Review
Phone
rating:
The
Motorola E550 is based on the Motorola
V300, and is available on T-Mobile. The E550 adds video recording,
Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a new keypad. The new
keypad is much improved, with larger, more tactile keys. The E550
has an exterior soft-touch finish, but is otherwise very similar
in appearance to the Motorola V550.
The
new features fix most of the shortcomings with the old V300 and
in fact the specification of the E550 is nearly identical to that
of the V550. However the E550 still has a rather high weight compared
to clamshells from other manufacturers. The E550 is a good all-round
phone, but suffers from inadequate memory, so you can't store many
videos or music tracks. Bluetooth can also be temperamental and
the camera is average at best.
Features
of the Motorola E550 include:
- VGA digital camera (640 x 480 pixels) with 4x
digital zoom
- Video capture, playback and download
- Internal display: 65,000 colours, 176 x 220
pixels
- In-built handsfree speaker phone
- Voice activated dialling
- Messaging: SMS, MMS
- Polyphonic ringtones & MP3 ringtones
- MOTOMIXER (Remixable MIDI ringer software)
- Event lights
- Java games: Wakeborder© & Photo Fun Editor©
(embedded) & space for downloads
- Phonebook: up to 1000 entries
- Memory: 5 Mbytes
- Connectivity: Bluetooth, USB, serial cable
- WAP 2.0, GPRS
- Quad-band
- Size: 89 x 49 x 25 mm
- Weight: 122g
- Talktime: up to 7.5 hours
- Battery standby: up to 250 hours

This phone is very good. Unlike my old phone it plays ringtones
and mp3's through a seperate loudspeaker. Bluetooth is good quality
and the camera does its job... Ringtones on this phone sound amazing
and can be created to the same quality by the user. Picture quality
is very high so that's why I'm goiving it a 4/5. The only let down
is the tiny memory, 5mb!!! It can barely hold one song, that's why
it didn't get a 5.

This is a very good, solid, reliable basic phone. I have had mine
for over a year and it operates as well as it did the day I bought
it (except the battery, which has natuarally deteriorated over time).
The sound quality is superb, unlike many Samsung phones you can
set MP3's to be the msg alert tone, alarm and ringtone. The phone
is quite light and feels very ergonomic. The menus are very user
friendly. Features are good, but I think the high-tech demanding
customer will not feel satisfied: Bluetooth is good, camera very
basic (a third of a megapixel), video very very basic (but almost
reasonable if you have a lot of light) and the phone memory is very
small (just 5mb, not expandable. Main plus points are that it's
cheap, built to last and has a good battery life.

I have had more phones than hot dinners and decided on a total change
from phone make to phone design. I have always had sliding phones
and have never been to keen on flip phones. What can I say? Well...
An excellent phone all round. Great style, looks good and feels
nice and is quite solid especially the flip part. Sounds are of
very good quality and adding MP3 ring tones are made easy using
the Bluetooth with a dongle. Video/picture quality is not bad compared
to other phones and the phone overall is very light in weight. The
reason why I rate this phone so high is because of the reception
quality. This is the only phone that I have had so far that allows
you to receive calls anywhere without dropping the line. If you
buy this phone you will not be disappointed. Highly recommend.

it! There are only 3 games (if you count fotofun) but they are very
addictive. The battery life is brilliant - I charged it 2 days ago,
and have been taking lots of videos - and the battery life is still
6/6. The photo quality is good - everyone was impressed. And, it
has MP3 ringtones (though I do not have bluetooth facilities so
I can't use this feature, sadly)! This is only my 2nd phone, after
upgrading from an ancient Nokia 3410, and I have found it very easy

The Motorola E550 is perfect little starter phone for anyone who
has never used a Motorola before. It's quite nifty because the texting
is good, the games are OK. But the camera isn't as good because
it's not very sharp. But I recommend you buy a camera istead of
using this phone as that sort of thing. It's very personal because
you can apply Unlock Codes for certain parts which you do not wish
for other people to see. The Bluetooth is OK, but it doesn't allow
alot of songs on this phone. So therefore, I would give this phone,
4/5 stars. Nuff Luv, Kez. XOXO

Not a bad phone at all. Probably the most negative thing is the
camera - it doesn't handle bright light all that well but in normal
lighting conditions it performs good enough. Secondly it only has
5Mb of memory which is pretty low considering other phones today
but if you're not after mass storage then it's not such a bad thing.
Everything else is good, I can't fault this phone at all. All the
thing you normally want in a phone (call/standby battery life, call
quality etc) work well. You can use mp3 clips as ringtones and they
sound good as well. The only other small gripe is that when you
want to bluetooth a ringtone or picture to someone, you need to
select 'copy' - there's no option to 'send'. It then switches bluetooth
on and searches for other devices. It also has a rubberised 'skin'
which feels odd but nice! You can't compare this phone to the high-end
models on the market right now but for what it is, I'm happy with
it.

here because you have to sift through reviews where people rate
a phone badly because the video camera recording only lasts 10 seconds
or it only holds 1 mp3 there are a lot of people who want a phone
to make calls beleive it or not and it would be nice to find out
if a phone really lives upto the name of it being a phone and not
a multimedia centre. In the end i got it (free of course) and your

I have been using this phone for about 3 months now, and I'm finding
it great for texting and phoning. The high resolution of the screen
makes this phone very clear, and text is easy to read. The neon
skin built into the phone is also very good. However, there are
a few flaws, the worst being choppy video recording, which sometimes
doesn't work properly, as during playback of a recorded video, the
video stops, but the sound continues. Another fault is that the
camera doesn't work well in dimly lit places, such as bars, and
previews of photos taken larger than 160x120 look very poor, and
take a while to load, and resizing them isn't a good idea, as it
just adds artifacts to the pictures, so if you're taking photos
that are going to be sent to other phones, it's best to take them
in MMS (160x120) resolution. Receiving pictures/sounds/videos via
Bluetooth could be a lot better. Once you turn 'Find Me' on, the
sender's phone, or a computer with Bluetooth has only 30 seconds
to find the E550. If it wasn't for the very poor video recording,
this phone would have got 4/5. If the camera resolution defaulted
to MMS resolution, I maybe would've given it another star.

This phone really is great! the pictures and video are good for
a mobile ( camera has 4x zoom, brightness contols, auto-timed capture
and shows you how much of memory you have remaining). The games
are entertaining ( golf, wakeboarding etc ) and keep you hooked.
Extremely cool phonebook, as it you can put a picture next to the
contact name and has photo caller ID, there are plenty of ways to
personalise it to your tastes (theme, skin, wallpaper, screensaver,
etc.) Ringtones are cool too, including 'hello moto'!!Which did
keep me amused for a while :) and can have them set as loud volume
to anything down to vibrate or silent. good message space, MMS works
fine + as well as WAP, unlike the motorola V620. It's an easy phone
to use, and looks really stylish, and for all the features it has
its great value, in comparison to other phones on the market of
similar price. and as you continue to use the phone you find more
and more bits and bobs ( speakerphone, voice recording, email an
d tons more) and there are the essential organiser things: - calculator
- alarm clock . . . and memory's not too much of a problem for me.
The phone just doesn't fail to impress, and would definetly recommend
it. Hope this helps x

This phone is fantastic. Basically, it has all the features you
could want in a phone and the mp3 ringtones make you stand out a
mile (in a good way!) To all you moaners: the camera's great for
a phone - if you want a really good camera BUY an ACTUAL camera,
if you want a video recorder BUY an ACTUAL video recorder; don't
forget that the primary function for this phone is to be A PHONE.
Only problem is the limited memory, could do with a little more.
However, it's a brilliant phone and the features are really loveable
:-)

understood how to use it after 10mins! Its so easy to navigate,

But can anyone tell me how to download an mp3 track via bluetooth?
Do you have to empty the memory of all the pictures and stuff to
accomodate the music?

I had a V300 phone previously which was very good. I recently upgraded
to the E550 hoping that it would be a lot better, sadly it wasn't!!
The only good thing about it is the new keys which are a lot larger
and better for texting. The video function is VERY disapointing.
It is VERY jerky and has a very 'pixelated' picture on playback.
There are no extra features on the phone apart from the video compared
to the V300.To sum up.......3/10 tops!! Don't even go there!! I'm
lucky to have T-mobiles 14 day satisfaction service so i'll definatly
be using it!!!
