LG Venus Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: A dual-screen touch-sensitive user interface combined with a full numeric keypad makes the LG Venus cool but practical too. Available in a choice of black, red, pastel pink or shiny pink, the Venus is a beautiful slide design phone that will definitely turn heads. It's fully equipped with a 3 megapixel camera, video camera, MP3 player, FM radio, Bluetooth and up to 8 Gbytes of memory.
Best buy: *Free* with half-price line rental from Dialaphone; or on Pay as you Go from the Carphone Warehouse for £99.95.

With the European launch of the LG KF600 (LG Venus) on 11 February 2008, LG have proven themselves once again to be at the forefront of innovation in user interface design. At first glance the KF600 looks just like any other slide phone - the top half has a high quality TFT screen, with touch-sensitive navigation buttons below, and when you slide it open, the full numeric keypad is revealed beneath. But what's really interesting is that the touch-sensitive navigation keys are context sensitive virtual keys. In other words, the function of the keys changes depending on what you're trying to do with the phone. LG call this an InteractPad™.

This makes the Venus a kind of hybrid between a conventional slide phone and a touchscreen-driven phone like the LG Viewty or the Apple iPhone. This is a brilliant idea - LG have realised that people love touchscreen user interfaces, but find them awkward for tasks like texting. The Venus offers the best of both worlds. Take a look at the picture on the right to see how this works in practice. The pictures show the upper screen and the lower touchscreen - look how the touchscreen changes depending on whether you are navigating the top-level menu, playing music or using the camera. We really like the concept, and it works well in practice. A neat feature is that you can turn the phone sideways and use the screen and user interface in landscape mode.

OK, let's take a tour of the rest of the phone. It's quite a chunky phone to hold, but by no means a brick, and not too heavy either. The touchscreen looks great in the glossy black finish, but it's also available in pastel pink, shiny pink and wine red. It's definitely a phone with wow! factor looks. LG have paid some attention to detail here, because the Venus comes with a good choice of themes that appear in all menu, icons, wallpaper and other user interface features.

They haven't skimped on features either. Although the Venus isn't a 3G phone, it has most of the multimedia features that you could want. The main display is a 262k colour TFT screen with 320 x 240 pixels and the lower screen (the touchscreen) has 240 x 176 pixels. So in total the display has 240 x 496 pixels available, making it almost as big as the iPhone. The camera is rated at 3 megapixels and can't match the best camera phones currently available, but is perfectly good enough for snaps. The camera can also record video clips.

The music player works very well. Music quality is good and the main speaker is loud! The touchscreen interface really does work well here - you can access all of the music functions without opening the slide. Support for a Bluetooth-enabled stereo headset is included and there's plenty of memory available for storing music: the microSD card slot can accept cards up to a whopping 8 Gbytes, which is enough for around 2,000 songs. We're pleased to see the inclusion of an FM radio too.

Connectivity is good, with support for both Bluetooth and USB. Battery life seems to be normal for this type of phone - you can expect to get a few days of normal use between charges. There's good support for games too, with the dual screen reminding us of the Nintendo DS.

We've criticised some of LG's touchscreen designs in the past (most notably the LG Chocolate), but we are actually big fans of LG, because they aren't afraid to innovate and most of the time their designs just get steadily better. The LG Venus might be the best yet (although perhaps the higher-spec Viewty still has the edge.)

Just had this phone looks great love the touch screen. The camera is much better than i expected had the Sony Ericsson 850i previously and the the photos taken with that were really grainy the photos taken with the LG Venus are much clearer. I haven't downloaded any music yet so i can't comment on the sound quality yet. The only proplem i have experienced are the headphones supplied with the phone have a round head jack but it says the headphones have to go in the same slot has the phone charger but this jack will not fit. Is there another slot for the headphones or have the wrong ones been supplied??? On first impressions and keeping in mind i have only had the phone 2 days i would give it 5 stars!

Although in the beginning this phone wasn't giving me any problems, it turns out my phone broke within three months. It is definately not a very sturdy phone. It often froze up on me, and was very slow. Just recently the top part of my phone became un- attached from the bottom part, and was held together by a small piece of film. As usual the people working at my nearby Verizon store were no help. Now my phone is broken, and i am unable to purchase a new one, but if i had the chance to, i would save myself all of the problems, and not buy this phone again. Just like my mom told me, they make these nice looking phones that all children my age will want to buy, and then they break. Good money makers i suppose, but if you're looking for a sturdy, able to use for a long time, phone, this is not the one.

this is the best phone i've ever owned. i've had many sonys and nokias over the years but this phone is in a different class. it looks really good for a start the chrome effect around the edge is tidy but the size is just right fits perfectly in the palm of the hand. the camera althogh 3mp gives really clear pics and the flash is very effective. it gives the reel of being sturdy and well built. the battery life is very good too as i could use the phone a whole lot in 3 days between charges. at only £99 on pay as you go i think its a bargain too.

Very nice looking phone, but with a few draw backs: No Smileys (the non-animated type) in text messaging (i rely on these a lot in texting); Inability to freely pick days for alarms (limited to: Mon-Fri, Sat-Sun, Mon-Sun, or individual days) might seem minor, but if like me, you rely on your phone as your alarm clock and work a non-standard shift-pattern it just doesn't fit in with real life; Animated "emoticons" are so small and similar virtually impossible to distinguish them; Annoying when texting that the number you are texting is shown, not the name of the person, unless you deselect the number first. Generally a nice phone to look at and to hold, but impractical....probably ideal for the younger one's who WANT a nice phone and don't NEED a good phone

hiya i had this phone in may and i hated it. i have heard loads of people say they love it, but i just couldnt get on with it. after about 2days i kept getting loads of messages that had nothing to do with me, i took it into about 3 phone shops and they all said the phone was faulty. so i wouldnt recommand it. i could only store up to about 3 songs and 4 photos without buying a memory card! [Editor's comment: Hayley, your phone didn't send you messages! The fault must have been with your sim card / network. As for memory, the phone has a capacity to store approximately 16 songs before you need to get a memory card.]

+ Pro's *Camera ,MP3 and texting touch screen features are brilliant *Touch screen works well on the most part *The overall look of the phone is solid *Has all the features that you truly need *Customisation of wallpapers and themes are on the whole, good. *Generally solid and reliable so far- Calling is crisp and clear, texting is fairly simple, the basics are covered really well. - Con's *Tricky to use in bright sunlight (you can't see the screen well at all) *The speakers are tinny after a Walkman phone *Lack of 3G *You have to buy an extra memory card *Battery life is a 1.5 days (but it will improve over time, so it isn't too much of a concern, and I have used it rather a lot in the 3 days I've owned it) *Powersave feature is annoying as much as it is useful It seems like there are a lot of negatives, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. The negatives are just small, pernickety details which don't completely tarnish the phone. On the whole, the KF600 is a classy, surprisingly easy to use phone, with some neat features. I would recommend this phone certainly, well so far anyway... The true test is whether it lasts this reliably for the whole 18-month contract though. Fingers crossed.

I've been using this phone for a couple of days and am generally very pleased with it. The interface takes a little getting used to for someone who's been wedded to Motorola for a long time (RAZR then SLVR), but I'm getting there. The FM radio is pretty good, the MP3 player is fine and the camera works well, especially when I remember to turn on the flash. Like others, I bumped into the text message reply issue and called Orange. Helpful guy on the phone who knew exactly what the issue was and I'm waiting for the SIM update as I type. Overall I'm very pleased - I like the design and the interface, it's not too bulky or heavy and it looks good. I'd prefer a slightly higher volume on the MP3 ringtone I imported, but you can't have everything!

Bought this phone this morning having had a Sony Ericsson W850i for nearly a year and have to say I am mightily impressed! I've read some bad reviews about the dual screen setup, and at first I had my doubts, but after a few hours playing around with it, it's like second nature! The only slight tiny quibble I have is that you can only use zoom in VGA mode, but the camera is a lot better than what I've been used to. The speakers are very loud, calls are crystal clear and it's very easy to import, file and sort pictures, videos and music. Another slight quibble is that it doesn't say who's text you when it comes up with 'one new message', but that's really just a minor personal thing I got used to with my previous phones. All in all, though, a fantastic buy!

I got this phone on Tuesday and so far I have been very impressed. Here's a quick run down: The phone feels feels really good in the hand. It's well balanced and build quality is excellent. The Interact pad is extremely responsive. I thought I'd mention this as I read a few reports that it takes more than one push to get the desired response. You can customise the settings of the Interact pad - a light touch of the finger tip gets the desired result. My main complaint is that removing the battery can be a bit tricky, but hopefully I won't need to be doing this much. Call quality is good. Battery lasted 3 days before it needed recharging. A stylish looking phone which is fun and easy to use.

"the pluses" - yes great looking phone, stylish and sometimes easy to use...feels great in the hand..has wow factor for all of ten minutes? Graet looking packaging really nice compared to other phone packaging. Music player is good enough although it sometimes locks up when trying to play music... unfortunatly "now the negatives" - its not always that easy to use, its very slow response, had to reboot/restart it over ten times this weekend due to "network access denied?" or "sim fault" which according to customer support told me to put my new sim in..I rang their customer support this morning and ended up rebooting between each call! (seems like the phone is little flakey to me).... It has no connection to Microsoft Outlook/Express - I have all my contacts in there....and have done for years...it requires you to do it in csv files..not practical and I`m a software engineer by trade!.. Unable to change your message tones....six is all you have. no more no less cant add any more.... Contacts imported from your sim are reversed...so you get all your lastnames, first names....have to change it their software! laborious... texting is way too hard, even the T9 texting seems european to me it does not recognise basic words like 'then'/'them' or 'and' you have to add them yourself....a real pain! On the whole the novelty factor wears out after a day...was pleased to see it (looks fantastic on tv) but thats about it... You cant even do 'voice activated dialling' (its not supported) I have spoken to orange about it and according to their support its not even in the manual? (even emailed LG and their support hasnt even bothered answering?) On the whole get this phone if all your after is looks/wow factor - usabilty and functionality will get you by but its like pulling teeth.... sorry LG nice phone but no cigar!

Got this phone as a free upgrade about 2 weeks ago and I was really unsure about it as I had always stuck with Samsungs in the past. However, I am sooo pleased I kept it as this phone is fantastic. My battery seems to last about 3 days before I need to charge it - and I'm using it quite a bit every day. The phone looks good, is easy to use and it's so easy to download songs onto it. The touch screen is great and the fact that you can personalise your phone is great. My only small gripe is that I have to use their tones for SMS and I'm not too keen on them - but I'll live with that. I would recommend this phone to anyone. LOVE IT!!!

This is a great little phone as it looks stylish and is very easy and fun to use plus it's small enough to fit in your bag/pocket. I only have a couple gripes so I'll start with the main one which is the battery. So far I'm having to charge it every day. Also, if you are away from the phone when you get a text or a miss call there are no signs like a flashing light or a symbol on your screen saver, to show that you've missed them which you will find on most Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones. You have to remember to check the phone manually which doesn't help the already short life of the battery. If you can live with these problems then I recommend buying the phone but perhaps get it on a contract so you can upgrade after a while.

agree with martin, the keypad & InteractPad locks too quickly - immediately after u make a call. I'd recommend this phone for those who already have a stable phone. This is more for design and style. The batt is very bad esp over the indicator. It shows 3 bar as full battery and the moment the first bar goes, the other 2 bar will go off within 6-8 hrs.

This replaced my u880 and isn't a bad phone though not as customisable. Don't like that the keypad backlight doesn't automatically come on when you slide phone open - have to press a key. Only other gripe is that keypad locks too quickly. Otherwise it does pretty much what a phone should do and looks good at the same time.

1. antenna is weak 2. software can still be improved as when making calls, the InteractPad locks, need to press camera button to activate again

Excellent phone! Was a bit apprehensive about having an LG as I've alway had Samsung/Sony Ericsson but this has converted me! It is the best looking phone on the market at the moment and it is great to use. The touch screen is amazing, very easy to use, and the features are great. Althogether a brilliant wee phone, very highly recommended.

Got this phone yesterday and I love it!! It's very user friendly and looks awesome!! The touch screen is a little slow to start with but I soon got used to that and I love how you can personalise it. My only grips is the lack of memory, the images and songs fill up really fast - or am i doing something wrong? If so someone please let me know!! Awesome phone, highly reccommended.

I got this phone last week, and so far i must say i'm very pleased with it. The camera seems pretty good and the overall user friendliness is better than i imagined. Also, it has the looks to die for and is well balanced when texting (slider open). I do have a couple of gripes however, but these are only things that aren't included in the menu. firstly, the lack of the reminder feature seen on my old sony w850i, which i relied on quite a lot, and secondly a countdown timer which i also used regularly in my poker games. i still really like this phone, and would easily recommend it to anyone.

This phone is suberb. OK, it may not have 3G capabilities but surfing is surpisingly quick. Google is also pre-loaded. Transporting files was a breeze and the MP3 player is more than adequate. The dual screen concept has been cleverly thought out and the problem with many touch screen phones i.e slow texting, has been solved. My only gripe is that the headphones supplied are at bit naff but this does not detract from the quality of the phone. LG feared to tread where no others have ventured and got it right. People, read the manual and play with the phone before submitting misleading reviews!

Lawrence matey ive got all the ringtones i want for callers its like you said move em to phone memory its just when you recieve a text alert/sms you cannot have an Mp3 only what is pre-defined in the Venus (unless you can show us something you know which can do this) , ive played with the Venus for a couple days now and i do really like it i also noticed that when the battery is low on the phone your ringtones start quiet and rise up ascendingly , there is no UK bodyglove for the phone so i have order 2 from USA which look cool and this phone will need a decent case with belt clip , Voice dialling is a big miss too. The phone is a great looker and slides well the screen is like the KRZR K1 a fingerprint magnet but you know this before you buy it !!! A tad louder ringing would do me but maybe im deaf at ripe old age of 28 , finally id say the LG Venus does have some of the best parts of other phones Easy To Text , Smart Looker , Good Camera it just would have been a World Beater if it had the Voice Dial and SMS Mp3 capabilities , if you can help with the SMS thing Lawrence then ta in advance.

Please Please Please, before people submit a review on a phone.First you need to read the manual, have some idea on how to use a phone, and take a few days or more to play with it,use it,test it,try it,compare it,research it,google it,check forums, and ask about something you don't know about.then you can give a proper review. Ryan from manchester you can set each person with a personal ringtone, you must save the contacts on the phone and not just on the sim, doing so brings up other options, hope that helps mate. Had this phone for a week, and can say this is a awesome phone. What i like about it, is that it has stolen all the good bits from the other phones.Easy texting (nokia),great music player (sony ericsson),great slide look and lots of options (samsung),style (most lg phones). Not too big not too small.Feels great in the hand.Easy to use once you know how to use it.Very good receiving and taking phones calls.Clear speech. Can personalise it to what you want, once you played about with it.The software is easy to use and not too complicated.Got the Prada (take away the name and not the greatest specs)and Viewty (great phone, but very big bulky shape),after using Nokias and Ericssons for years. And i think this phone is better as it has stolen bits from those two phone as well, and you are left with a all rounder phone. The bad bits; Sometime you had to press the button a few time for it too react.Like any phones like this you need a crystal hard case to keep the finger makes off.The case it comes with-WHY??.Yes there are phones out there with better specs, but for all round phone, with style, great idea with modern and old school ideas.Great price.TOP THIS!

I really like this Venus it basically is the little brother of the viewty with a keypad to make texting easier , it is a very good phone although lacking in 3G it still operates on the web well. My only problem with it is the fact that you CANNOT have your own Mp3 as a SMS alert you have to have one of about 12 default and also i dont know about you but when i want to mass move pics, music, videos etc between folders the "mark all" option made life easier but the VENUS does not have this so you have to do it one by one for everything which is a real irritant !! The camera does have a Xenon flash but unlike the Viewty it does not auto turn on in poor light you have to do it again manualy for every photo if you require it , Voice dialling is absent again (come on LG its a must for us drivers out there !!!!) all in all its a very good phone not great but good its slim rightly weighted a little cheap on the build materials and rings quite loud at full volume but not ear blowing like its big bro the Viewty. A deffo step in the right direction by LG but in this day and age steps are not big enough when competition make strides.....
