LG U8110 Review

Phone rating:

Please note: the U8110 is now obsolete. LG no longer make this kind of conventional clamshell phone, but if you want something a bit different, then the new LG Prada is worth a look. The LG Prada Black and LG Prada Silver are available from Dial-a-Phone. Check out their LG Prada deals.

The LG U8110 is a clamshell style 3G phone available on the 3 network. It supports all of 3's video mobile services including video calling from its built-in video camera. An integrated speakerphone helps to make video calling easier. You can also record video clips to send to another phone, and download video from 3, for example news, music and sports clips.

The camera is of VGA resolution, which is standard amongst current camera phones. The high-resolution display is clear and sharp with 65k colours - ideal for viewing videos and photos.

Functionally, the phone has a very similar spec to the other 3G phones currently available. This includes features like an MP3 player, voice recorder, Java applications, e-mail and MMS. The only features missing are Bluetooth wireless connectivity and the advanced GPS (Global Positioning System) features available in the NEC e616 for example. It does have both infrared and USB connections though, which are a welcome addition. The phone's memory is 14 Mbytes, which is low for a 3G phone, and insufficient to make good use of features like video recording and the MP3 player.

Physically the phone is compact, very attractive, and is better styled than most 3G phones. Being 3G it's larger than most clamshells, but no heavier than other 3G phones. Battery life is good compared with most other 3G phones, which is a key advantage, although most users will find that they need to recharge every few days.

In summary, the 8110 is a good all-round performer, but not exceptional when compared to the other 3G phones on the market. We would recommend it for those looking for a compact clamshell shape or good battery life, but it's worth also considering the LG U8120 or NEC e228 as better alternatives.

Features of the LG U8110 include:

  • Supports all 3's video mobile services: video calling, video messaging & downloading video clips
  • Internal display: 65,536 colours, 220 x 176 pixels
  • Built-in VGA camera (640 x 480 resolution) with 2x digital zoom and light
  • MP3 player
  • Voice recorder
  • Speakerphone
  • Multimedia messaging
  • E-mail
  • Java games
  • Avatar address book – create cartoons of friends and family that pop-up on screen every time they call
  • Infrared and USB connectivity
  • Calendar, To Do List, Memos, Clock, Alarm, Calculator, Currency Converter
  • Memory: 14 Mbytes internal memory
  • Vibration alert
  • Weight: 126g
  • Size: 50 x 96 x 23 mm
  • Talktime: 2 hours
  • Battery standby: 5 days

This was my husband's phone because my LG 8120 broke one month before the contract finished and I lost all my numbers. It just died. LG 8110 has a decent camera but the video camera only takes about 10 seconds of footage and the resolution is pretty bad. I find it not very user-friendly on the texting side. The battery life doesn't last a week and I'm not a heavy user. 3 customer services are the worst. They don't listen to you and keep charging you month after month even if you tell them numerous times you've cancelled the contract. They also pass you from person to person and some call centres are based in India which is even harder to get the message across. A lot of the features on the phone I don't really use - why should I spend money on surfing the web when I have broadband?!

This is a very good value flip phone, just for all you guys out there with complaints about reception, three cover almost 98% of the country go to three's web site and use the coverage checker that is what it is there for. Three used to own orange and then sold orange to become one of the largest network providers in the uk. They are streets ahead of vodaphone who are text and video 3g and orange, t-mobile have only just started 3g service. To have a decent flip phone with video, camera and decent display, plus the use of threes service for under £50 is very good value for money, oh and the 30day validity period does not count anymore on the £15 voucher, this is a good handset and in most case's the software has been updated, and for all you guys that complain about three answer this why are the Which mobile network of the year. I also have the new Motorola v3x (just released on the three network) like the v3 razor but with a 2meg pixel camera, not such a rubbish network after all.

Like 3 Mobile services this phone is absolutely shocking!! After enduring bad reception, my LG U8810 handset finally stopped working 2 weeks before the 12mth warranty ran out. Their replacement handset lasted a further 3 mths before also screwing up! Their “only” offer was to take on another 24 mth contract and they would give me a replacement handset… yeah right!! Do NOT deal with 3!!!! I hope this prevents at least one person from going through the same experience!!

Worked well for about a year, like all Korean goods, after which it started crashing. Battery started out with 2-3 days on average use. Now i'm lucky to get a day. Microphone stuffed up numerous times. Had a situation where I would answer calls and the other person would'nt hear a thing. Worst of all, the problem was intermittent. HUTCHINSON THREE only provides refurbished handsets which die sooner or later and they COULD not care less. If you are looking for a network to sign up with, unless you are completely stoned, you would stay away from THREE. They once billed me an extra 250 dollars for using internet via my mobile phone. I did some calculations and that required me to sit down with my phone for 6-7 hours surfing the web through my phone. The only day I used internet through the mobile was when I first bought the phone, 6 months ago. Ridiculous. Took 4 weeks of arguing and coaxing before the waived the amount. Overall LG Phones Blow THREE Blows Big time.

When unlocked and changed to orange had even more problems. Now can't use at all as reception breaks us - wherever I am. Orange thought it might be 'masts' prob but not. Problems amongst problems. infra red does not send nor recieve. Microphone is prone to faults. It stalls. Loses signal many times even in major cities. 3 Customer services are poor. (Those two somehow magically fixed themselves after a week or so) Very random connection strength, goes all over the place for no reason at all. Somtimes the voice of the person I am talking to stutters and cuts out. In the last 2 months the microphone seems to have gone completely. The video quality is so bad it is unusable. All in all this is by far the worst phone I've ever bought, several of my friends have it and they have all had similar problems to me.

The microphone is GLUED to the shell, that's why it makes a noice compared to heavy rain when you call someone (If it brakes free). The reception changes rapidly, sometimes it wont even care to search the net again. And for those who glorifies the mp3-playing ability, 14 Megs and a poor audio quality.. get a life. There are a lot more of errors, but I will put them all in one sentence. DON'T BUY THE PHONE.

This phone seemed great for the first couple of weeks - but it soon became boring - as the memory is only capable of storing a very small amount of mp3's and videos, the video quality is worse on playback, and in the year that I've had it - I've managed to send one file through infra-red, and it took 23 mins. The reception goes from 4 bars to none to 2 bars to no signal for the next 20 mins to 4 bars etc. etc. and the phone froze in the middle of downloads which the phone company still charged me for. Anyone who likes this phone knows nothing about phones. I even managed to get myself the one up, U8210 or something, and that was no better at all. There are numerous phones on better deals - DON'T BUY THIS ONE

At first the phone looked very good, everything was working perfectly until from one day when it started dieing on me every minute i was talking to someone on the phone. It switches off automatically, and like old computers, it FREEZES letting you do nothing but take out the batteries and switch it on again. It has got the WORSTTTTTTTT reception, one moment u can hear the other person talking and next moment you dont. Unlike other phones it has NO GAME at all, you hav to PAY and download game if yout want to play any. You cant access to any other WAP page other than they hav on its THREE WAP. I've had this phone for 7 months now, and it is a good phone when you first buy it, but after a while you notice all the flaws it carrys, such as if and when you assign a downloaded ring tone to a number, when that number rings it lags when you answer and takes about 3 seconds for the person to hear you're 4th "hello?" It does have a tendancy to lag quite a bit when you use the camera and just generally changing the settings. That reallys ticks me off. In general it's easy to get on with, but can try your patience at times. Don't expect to stick with this phone for a year.

Well, I've had it for a year and just upgraded to a pda/smartphone As a TELEPHONE I have to tell you that this is GREAT, my previous 3G clamshell effort from NEC was utterly appauling, dropping calls every 5 minutes, not ringing when people called me yet still showing many a bar of signal strength, re-booting itself etc etc etc After the NEC which was NOT USEABLE AS A BUSINESS TOOL the LG has scored very highly It's lighter, smaller, tougher and infinitely more powerful in terms of signal strenth / reception It has had the odd issue, the battery can overheat in hot climates if kept close to your heart in a chest pocket for example and the beggar switches itself off silently which can annoy Mine has been dropped a couple of times and for the last month the microphone has not worked so I've had to plug in the in-ear headset which is a fiddle STILL it has been pretty dependable so I'm a bit worried that the new PDA/Smartfone might be as bad as my old NEC bag o meard Good Points, pretty RELIABLE AS A TELEPHONE, small size, Good battery life, excellent speaker for hands free & ringtones, fairly simple to use BAD POINTS PHONE WISE THE WORST POINTS ARE THE LACK OF BLUETOOTH & THE TINY AMOUNT OF MEMORY The 3 network remains a "Walled Garden" THIS IS A MASSIVE NO-NO even after others like Orange launched open gardens 3G, I've been with three for 2 years and their awful reputation has been well deserved, they ARE IMPROVING.......just very very sloooooooowly !

Don't believe anyone who has given this phone a good rating. All the rumours are true. It's a load of pants as is the network (don't know who voted for them as network of the year , must have been rigged!). I was warned not to change to three when my old contract ran out. Should have listened. 10 reasons not to get one are as follows. 1. Phone signal will die at random and you have to switch the phone on and off to get it back. 2. Signal will fluctuate when you don't move around. 3. The camera is rubbish quality as is the video camera function. 4. The phone will crash when you connect to a computer with XP. 5. The battery will start to die after about 7 months. 6. The buttons will start to break after about 6 months. 7. Although you get some earphones to use your phone as an MP3 player it only has enough memory for 1 mp3. 8. The 3 network is useless and their customer service is awful. 9. The network coverage is extremely poor especially for video coverage. 10. The GPS is very slow and crashes constantly. If you try to cancel your contract 3 will have none of it. I just sacked my last month of the contract off and got a different phone and threw the old three one in the bin!

Cause Im not a heavy phone user this phone has been alright but it does get really annoying while in the middle of a convo reception just disappears even though you're standing still, and texts seem to take forever to get through. Then only problem I am having is downloading all the photos that I took with the phone, it keeps crashing, so I thought i would email them to my email address but I dont know what IP SERVER address to use, cause the one they had on suddenly decided it was going to stop working!!!!! IF YOU HAVE COMPLAINTS TO MAKE WATCHDOG HAVE A SPECIAL EMAIL SETUP THAT SENDS COMPLAINTS DIRECTLY TO 3. THIS IS THE ADDRESS: customer.services@3mail.com. Also I am sure that you should be able to complain using the SALE OF GOODS ACT, because if they are unable to provide the service that they stated, or are unable to repair the goods satisfactorily then you should be entitled to your money back or cancellation of contract, but it would be an idea to get in touch with TRADING STANDARDS; we should at least try to find out our rights.

If I could give a lower rating that 1 star I would! I agree wholeheartedly with the majority of reviews saying how rubbish this phone and network is. I purchased my phone in September after having enormous bills with my previous network I thought, and it sounded like 3 was too good a deal to miss. As I found out the hard way though as the saying goes you only pay for what you get. I've had trouble with the phone from the start I had to wait nearly 2 weeks for my old number to be ported over from my previous network provider and after that time I noticed the problems. I had full reception one minute the next the reception went completely and I kept on getting intermittent reception even without moving. After that time the shop where I bought the phone would not take it back as it was outside their exchange period and 3 would not cancel the contract or said I had to pay back the full 12 months still outstanding! Their customer service is awful. They can't seem to understand (or don't want to) any problems and have to put you on hold for ages. I can't wait till September to cancel my contract 3 are going to loose a lost of custom - good!

I have the LG u8110, and I think it is rubbish! The software on these is disgraceful. If I turn my phone off, it sometimes doubles up all of my texts in my inbox and it says 'failed' when either trying to open one up or delete the duplicate one! Then I turn it off again and turn it back on and it's deleted ALL my texts!!! I would not advise anyone to buy this phone until 3 have sorted their software. Phones are a little chunky too. The WAP is slowwww as well. Another bad point is sometimes it does not log missed calls on the screen or in the calling lists. My boyfriend tried ringing me 5 times in a row and my phone was on with signal, and 3 would not allow the call though and sent him to the ansaphone and other times it did get through I missed, and it did not show the missed calls! A BAD PHONE!!!!!

Please bear with me I am creating a website for people to lodge complaints of every kind and it should be up within the next fortnight. Please tell everyone you know to go there when it's up as I'm looking for 1000+ complaints, which should make the company sit up and take notice. I've had this phone since last June and I have to say that I agree with the vast majority of reviews about this phone-it is a very poor phone in comparison to what is arund and was around at the time of me buying it. And 3G as a network is just rubbish. How can you explain losing 3G reception capability at 5am in the morning?? Or having texts you send to mates being delivered 24 hours later, or (and this is the best one) the network getting over-crowded at xmas to the point where you can have full reception yet still can't make a call or send a text when you want and this happened the entire December just gone! If anyone is thinking of getting a 3G phne and lives in the East London area and works in Central London I would seriously urge you to choose a different network-3G should't be allowed to call themselves a mobile phone network until they can sort out there coverage and network problems!

I have already had the phone sent back once. That was a nightmare and a series of mistakes. Now I am currently on the phone waiting fro their repair center, and have now been waiting on hold for 37 minutes. I truely believe that 3 is the worst choice of network. Every problem mentioned in this review page I have had, anyone here who says 'what are you talking about, it's a great phone' I gurantee you will eat your words eventually. This phone crackles and hisses, with the hands free set fitted it's fine, customer services suggested I use it this way for another seven months until I could upgrade it free !!!! these people are insane, my last resort is to take them to court for breach of contract, I suggest you do this in the small claims court and they will then have to pay for the inconvenience they have caused you, cancel the contract, and find a decent... honest... mobile company.

I and two others started a company in August this year and bought 3 LG U8110 phones, mainly because the free calls between mobile phones. Within 2 months all three phones developed problems - the lines really crackled and one on of the phones we could not hear the person on the end of the phone. We needed to be on call 24/7 so asked for replacements in November (now 12/01/05) 3 refused point blank to change them having said that we would have to send them back which would take a minimum of three days to repair, over a two week period made over 20 calls with still the same response. We cannot be without any mobile phone due to the industry we are in, period. I even phoned 3 head office in Hemel Hempstead who only diverted me back to the 'Help-Line', no one there would accept any sort of responsibility....I asked to speak to the MD at Hemel who, I was told, did not speak to customers (maybe he should because he would know what the people paying his wages really feel). The people we bought the phones off have sent through 3 new phones today after chasing them for nearly 5 weeks. These are refurbished Motorola A835's, my god what a heap of junk they are. We cannot afford to pay off the contract (this will cost us a total of £750 for all phones) and have until July till the contract ends. I have even sent emails to 3 customer services who have not even bothered to reply. To those that have this phone and are on 3, you must be one of the very lucky ones - to those that have given this phone 5 stars I have the number of a very good psychiatrist. Thank you for reading, if you want this phone it is up to you. Buy yourself a Nokia and go on O2 or Vodaphone - we will....

I was recently faced with the problem of having this phone sent back to my aunt in the UK, but after considering how elegant the phone looked I decided not to be stupid. Moreso, most foreign phones, as it has come to my notice, fail to work outside the country or service provider from which they were purchased. Hereonafter is an email I sent to a site (http://www.thetravelinsider.info/roadwarriorcontent/nokiaunlocking.htm) which claims to unlock mobile phones of all sort, I was glad that I was going to have it unlcoked once and forever be at peace with my mobile life; I was unfortunate because the list of models that could/can be unlocked did not conform with that which was in my possession. Below is a regenerated copy of the email I sent as an enquiry regarding this issue: "MAIL FROM: PRATTING@YAHOO.COM RCPT TO: dr2@thetravelinsider.info SUBJECT: PHONE ENQUIRY DATA/BODY: I visited your website recently with the intention to find help unlocking my LG U8110 mobile (with IMEI 354294-00-114551-6). Please if you have a solution to this I'll greatly appreciate your immediate response. Thanks." Well, my first impression of this phone was that it had a fairly poor quality feel to it. It felt more plastic, and the flip screen less robust, than the NEC e 616, which I make most comparisons to, as they are quite close in many aspects (and the fact that my sister owns one). However, after asking about this in the shop, they assured me there was nothign wrong with the quality, and I'm prepared to take their word for it. The screen is very good. LG seems to have learned what very few other manufacturers have figured out yet. If you have over 65000 colors: USE THEM! This is by far the most illustrative and colorful screen I have seen on any phone. It makes all Nokia and NEC phones look gray. The menu is also very simple and well laid-out, in my opinion, with a choice of three different menu styles. A nice touch, and it refreshes the whole menu when you change it. There are nine main menus, with a very conventional setup, which is not a bad thing in this case. The keys in general are okay... learning your way around the menus becomes a piece of cake after a few days, even with so many buttons (26!). However, the keys do have a tendency to not do anything, even though you pressed a key and heard a 'click!'. Annoying, but not intolerable. The multimedia is quite fleshed out. The camera, which I know is a very important part of the phone for many, is very good, although little light always presents a problem. the flash is USELESS, unless you're taking a picture of something closer than a foot away. The spinning-camera thing is COOL, and also practical. Having not used the video function very much, I'll reserve any harsher judgement, but it seems to be on par with the camera - which means, very good standard. Audio is one of the worse aspects of the LG. It cant play music while the phone is closed, unless you have the headset in, and with only 16 MB of diskspace, you'll be lucky to fit 3 songs in it. The non-extenable memory also bug me to madness. Speaking of headset - the handsfree function (and headphones in general) exceeded my expectations by far. They are very good. Being able to connect very easily to a computer and download songs that way is also very useful. Battery time is EXCELLENT! Having heard friends complain about the e616 for ages about their battery time, I'm so glad that I only have to charge my phone on average every 3 days. Reception is pretty much like all 3G phones - okay. no more. But at least the LG doesnt hang up for no reason like the NEC. Reception problems have never bothered me. To sum up: Loads of color, simple and consistent menus, very functional key make this phone a pleasure to use, and allows you to spend hours just playing around in the endless menus. Excellent camera AND video functions, although the memory is a bit too low. Max 3 mp3 songs. Recpetion okay. Extra stuff (handsfree, phone manager for PC) very usful. A pleasant surprise for me, who wasnt expecting them.

This phone is fantastic. I just got it on pay monthly and 3's price plan (video talk 500) is very good. For people who would like to own a 3G phone yet are always put off by the size then look no further. The LG U8110 is the smallest 3G phone around (it's about the same size as the Motorola V600. The features are excellent and the camera quality is outstanding (I have a friend with the NEC E616 and when I video call him the quality of my camera is better than his). Reception is quite good which is a bonus because about a year ago it was quite poor. The battery life is average lasting up to about 5 days on standby and 3 days if you talk quite a lot. Overall this phone is a superb phone which LG must have spent quite some time workin on. If you buy this phone you won't be dissapointed.
