Following on from the success of the Chocolate
phone, LG's next release in its "Black Label" series
is the Shine. Like the Chocolate, the LG Shine is a slide-design
phone, and is very much intended as a fashion statement. Whereas
the Chocolate was dark and mysterious, with its hidden touch sensitive
keypad, the Shine positively sparkles with light and has a more
conventional keypad. The reason for the name "Shine" is
that the phone is highly reflective, having a shiny stainless steel
body and a large LCD display that turns into a mirror when not in
use. It's definitely a cool-looking phone and one that will attract
attention. The photo here doesn't do it justice. Be aware though
that the metal casing does have a tendency to pick up fingerprints
and scratches.
When in use the display lights up, dimming after
a few seconds of inactivity. Leave the phone for a little while
longer and it miraculously turns into a mirror - an effect that
will have you watching with anticipation for at least the first
week of ownership! Just be aware that the mirror screen isn't that
easy to see in sunlight. Below the screen is a roller with two buttons.
These let you navigate around the icons on screen when the phone
is closed. It has to be said that the roller isn't the easiest user
input method ever invented. LG should have learned their lesson
after the problems with the touch-sensitive buttons on the Chocolate!
Also on the side of the phone is the MP3 button, which lets you
use the phone as a music payer when closed. It's a neat and effective
design. Open up the slide and you find a fairly conventional metal
keypad. It's not touch-sensitive thankfully, but is almost flat.
In practice the keypad poses no difficulties and is similar to the
keypad found on Motorola's RAZR series of ultraslim phones. It lights
up blue when in use.
In terms of features, the Shine is not lacking.
The camera has 2 megapixels and uses a Schneider-Kreuznach lens.
Now that 3 or 5 megapixel cameras are available in phones, it's
the quality of the optics that dictate picture quality, and the
Shine does produce good quality pictures for a phone. The camera
is equipped with autofocus, and has an LED light for night-time
photography. It also has a video camera. The display is of high
quality, being a TFT screen with 262,00 colours and 240 x 320 pixels
- virtually the industry standard for high-end phones nowadays.
As already mentioned, there's an MP3 player that supports a wide
range of file formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+ and AAC++. A stereo headset
is supplied, and an optional stereo Bluetooth
headset is also available. The LG Shine supports MicroSD
memory cards with capacity of up to 2 Gbytes, so there's plenty
of storage for music. You could realistically use a phone like this
as an iPod replacement. Other features worth noting are Java games,
a fast EDGE connection for downloading data, and Flight Mode for
using the multimedia functions when not connected to a network.
The battery life of the Shine is probably a couple of days in normal
use, although the battery indicator doesn't seem to be very reliable.
We like the LG Shine, but it has more than its
fair share of issues. It creates a very good first impression, with
its metal and mirror looks, and when handling the phone, we get
an impression of quality and durability. The stainless steel casing
adds to the weight, but the phone is very slim and feels nice in
the hand. All of the features that you'd expect from a high-end
2.5G phone are here. However, there are downsides to having a shiny
metal phone: it scratches and gets covered in fingerprints, and
the mirror screen is difficult to see in sunlight. The roller is
simply unnecessary and annoying. The ringtone volume is too low
and the reception seems to be worse than average. There have been
reports of the Shine shutting down and then refusing to switch back
on, but these are quite rare. If this happens to you, try removing
the battery and trying again. If this fails, it will have to go
back to the shop for a replacement. The Shine looks good, but just
like the Chocolate, it's not the most user friendly phone that you
can buy. Alternatives worth considering are the LG
Chocolate, LG KF510, and Samsung
G600.
Features
of the LG Shine include:
2 megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach
lens, autofocus, flash and 2x digital zoom
Video recorder
Display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 240 x 320 pixels
Stereo music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+ and AAC++
file formats)

I'm surprised when I read the other reviews that no one mentions
the incomplete MP3 set-up. Doesn't anyone use an external memory
to be able to have more then 10 songs on the phone? The MP3-player
is in my view useless without the external memory. Anyway here is
my problem. The MP3 player can't access the external memory card.
To be able to play songs from the external memory you have to go
through "my things" (I have a Swedish set-up so I don't know the
English name) which is much more complicated AND even though you
can play the songs this way the other features doesn't work. No
play lists or equalizer it doesn't even automatically play the next
song. It just stops after it has played the one you first selected.
If you thing about using the phone as an serious MPS-player think
again. Rating:

the phone certainly looks stylish but its not exceptionaly sophisticated
in its features. It will only hold 20 texts messages which in todays
day and age just isnt enough. Also when the outbox is full (20 messages),
on the 21st delivered message, they are all automatically deleted!
It doesnt give the option of folders either. When a text is sent
you are directed back to the main screen of the phone so you have
to re navigate back to the message section. the sound isnt very
loud, even on its highest setting. the roller bar doesnt do anything
that cant not be performed by presing the keypad - it just seems
to get in the way. when using the phone, due to the position of
the camera lens on the back, your fingers end up covering the lens
- this surely will put prints on the lens? if you recevie a text
when the phone is closed and you view it with out sliding the phone
open, the message that tells you you have receved a text doesnt dissaper.
you have to press cancell for it to dissaper - all these little
things combined made me find the phone inpractible. it is also very
sensitive to scratches and doesnt have a very stong signal in doors.
the batterery drains with in 24 hours even if not used heavily.
the phone itself, cosmetically is outstanding however in terms of
use it lets it's self down. Rating:

It happens to me, but I figure out that if one turns on the mp3,
camera, or bluetooth, leaving it idle for awhile, the phone could
potentially switch off. Turning back the phone will not help and
you will have to remove the battery. Luckily, this is a firmware

Having never owned a phone with any extra functions i chose the
LG Shine to initiate myself in having a phone as an object of desire.
The phone itself is as the packet says shiney shiney, which instantly
appeals to magpies like me. It has a nice satisfying weight and
size, lovely stainless steel back and keypad, big tactile keypad..
and of course the magic morror screen. there's odd bit of cheapo
silver plastic i think but i'm nitpicking. However I'm not attracted
much by the figety little roller dial, it's unsightly as well as
being not that effective to use and when you press it (it can also
be used as three buttons) it isnt very tactile. the first handset
i was given had a faulty roller which only moved in one direction
on the screen (its meant to go up and down), so i'm also wary of
how robust it is. Also with the first handset i had i taken off
the plastic from the mirror and it was scratching within one week
of use. My other peave with the design is that the camera lense
is in an awkward postion and i keep putting my finger over it (maybe
this is because i'm not used to camera phones) AND you have to use
tiny buttons or the fidgety roller button to take the picture. The
controls on the phone in general are not very obvious compared to
nokias and a bit long winded and i can't be bothered to work them
out sometimes. i can't seem to find predictive text function either.
It's a pretty phone (as mobile phones go) but i wouldn't buy one
if it wasn't included in my contract.. there are more pretty or
more useable phones on the market that probably cost the same. Rating:

texts and playing one of the games for about half an hour. The scroll
wheel was annoying, skipped all over the place. Horrible boring

Good looking phone with a nice weighty feel which gives it a feel
of quality. Does everything I expect from a mobile phone. Anything
more, I'd be looking at a PDA/Phone combo like this one: www.seehtc.com
as an all in one unit. Reading some the reviews, I personally don't
understand why people are complaining about sending a text - handy
tip, if you press the scroll wheel four times you get to open up
a new text quickly. So it is about,oh, two more key presses than
some phones. Predictive text is good but if you are one of those
people who can't spell or can't be bothered to spell and have to
use abbreviations then it's not the phone that is slow is it? It's
not a phone for people who like to text as the etched keys are not
suitable for it. If those people think sending texts is bad on this
phone, don't even consider the forthcoming LG Prada or Apple iPhone
with touchscreen input let alone worry about fingerprints. Haven't
tried the email function but then a cheap U3 memory stick with portable
Thunderbird is a better option. Bluetooth: excellent as it can send
and receive files to/from my PDA (a Tapwave Zodiac), my laptop and
to my main computer using a cheap usb dongle from ebay. MP3: good
but if you want to have it more organised then buy an idiotPod (ha,
then discover the delights of DRM). Enjoy the randomness of shuffle.
It has a microSD slot so you can have extra storage but awkwardly,
you have to remove the back cover to access it. Text tones: only
4 but that's four too many in my book so I'm not complaining. Off
and vibrate work for me as I really don't care about being notified
about receiving text messages. Ring tones: well traditionally, all
built-in ones are ok but you can use your own MP3, WAV, or MIDI
file as the ring tone. Still, if you want Crazy Frog you have the
choice. Battery life: If you want to have a slim phone with colour
screen you have to expect to charge it more otherwise I've found
it quite good. You can change the brightness to save a bit more
on battery. Discount certain reviewers who have said battery life
is awful after two days. Rechargeable batteries need a few cycles
to be conditioned. User interface: ignore what certain people have
been saying. It is excellent and reminds me of the old Nokia 6110
and how easy it was to navigate. Once you learn how to control the
scroll wheel. The option to use the keypad is also handy when using
the phone one handed. Only one theme available - white text on black
which works well though the option of other themes would have been
a nice touch. The flash lite capability is an interesting addition.
Camera: It's ok, a bit slow but then I have a 5MP digital camera
and the phone camera is never going to match it. Video: Probably
the poorest function but as it's really a novelty item there is
no point in talking about it. Downsides: the power connector is
propriety and the cover will in all likelihood break off. The camera
lens, I would prefer it to be in a horizontal plane, as my finger
tends to cover it leading to a slightly greasy lens. I would like
to have seen a USB charging cable included. I did have ONE problem
with start-up but that was it and I reckon it was down to a Vodafone
SIM in an O2 branded phone. With the O2 SIM it has been perfect
in operation so reading some of the reviews, it may be down to certain
network firmware. Reception is good - living in a coastal region
- there is no difference between Vodafone and O2 (in my opinion)
as all networks are variable in quality here. Overall, this is a
fashion phone with enough useable features to make (almost)everyone
happy. One final tip, I've kept my plastic covering on the phone
to stop it from scratching. Might look "uncool" but it protects
well enough and no fingerprint problems! Rating:

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PHONE!! This is the worst phone I have ever
had in my life. I have had to have my phone replaced twice in the
last 3 weeks! The first one appeared to be ok, but then would not
charge (it had charged ok before) It was as dead as a Dodo! I tried
everything - several different plug sockets, taking the battery
in and out - nothing would get it to work! I was without a phone
for three days (until I could get in the shop to change it). I got
my new phone and again everything was ok for a week... then the
problems started again. I turned it off whilst at work and it completely
refused to turn beack on again (i knew it was fully charged!) I
tried everything again and finally it came pon after removing the
battery about 10 times! By this time I was really fed up but put
it down to one of those things. BUT NO... it jas done it AGAIN!
I have just tried to charge my phone and again it would not do anything
at all. I kept unplugging the lead, removing the ba ttery, trying
every plug socket in the house. Now I am really fed up and I am
more than sure that it is not just me who is unlucky with this phone!
There must be some sort of problem with it..and I am interested
to know if anyone has had a similar experience. Aside from these
troubles, in essence the phone seems ok. It looks cool, feels sturdy
and is definitely cool. However, the little roller thing is a little
sensitive and tends to 'jump' a little when you press it to select
something. This in itself does not put me off though..it is just
a little annoying! As for everything else I would say that the external
speaker sounds a little 'tinny' but the sound is good when used
with earphones. The pre loaded songs are a bit rubbish as is the
tones for messages etc. I personally think that it looks good, but
as a phone is rather basic! Rating:

I have a Sony Ericcson D750i, which is one of the best phones i've
ever used (and I've had a few)! Last week, i decided that i was
going to buy a Nokia N73, as i wanted more features, but stumbeled
across the LG Shine. Amazing looks and feel, so decided to give
it a try. The phone is brilliant, but my one and main gripe is the
scroll button. This will take some getting used to as it constantly
selects another option if you're not extremely careful, as it's
way too sensitive. This makes using the two smaller buttons on either
side of it more tedious. Apart from that, it's a solid phone, nice
metal care, excellent display, good features and decent sound quality.
The camera does the trick, with clear pictures and a long video
record time. Hours of fun! Rating:

Hi I was the first one to review this phone on here and i'm just
updating my review for the benefit of any people who are thinking
of buying this phone. I did keep it for about a week and after that
am afraid I had to take it back. I swapped it for the much more
plain looking but much much more amazing Sony Ericsson W810i. The
reviews for that are stunning! Reasons: Well obviously not its looks,
it's still gorgeous and I still look at it and admire its picture
on this website. For me though, as much as i'd like to be a fashion
phone gal, i'm just not. I try wearing heels and always go back
to flats the same way I try using posh looking phones like this
one and always go back to durable sporty phones like the Ericsson.
I just love practicality too much I guess. The phone was slow, heavy
and the worst gripe of all was the reception. I got NONE. Where
I live isn't the best for signal but it's not the worst, the LG
Shine refused to pick up any signal there unless I effectively stood
on my window sill. The ericsson in comparison has 3 bars which is
even better than my old Nokia and i'm a happy bunny! Texting is
slow on the Shine, scrolling is a pain although the scrollbar is
a gloriously decadent little thing. The camera lags but that wasn't
a major problem for me. I turned this phone off once and it wouldn't
turn back on again... Had to take the battery out and put it back
in again.... the other problem I had was trying to make calls and
not being able to hear anything.... that stopped after a couple
of days though. Overall gorgeous, if you're that kind of girl, a
few problems can be expected with these high spec phones, but if
you can't walk in heels don't wear them, and if you don't feel comfortable
carrying an ornament phone around then don't buy one. Hope this
was helpful. Rating:

I've had this phone for only the past few days, although I was planning
to get the D900 I felt the looks in comparison to the dull looking
D900 sold it for me! But so far it is looking good. The scoll feature
can get in the way when opening and closing the slide but you just
need to get used to sliding away from the central scroll button.
The slide allows easy access shortcuts to the main menus like text
and phonebook which is great and a bit of practice with getting
used to the scrolls sensativity, depending on how fast you scroll,
your safe. I'd suggest not using the scroll bar as a selection button
as you end up scrolling and not selecting! - instead use the left
and right buttons. Although the titanium frame is a great solid
finish in comparison to a plasic finish it does add weight to the
phone and fingerprint marks can get annoying! I haven't really tested
the cameras full potential but i'd suggest if you choose looks before
a top mega pixel camera phone it won't matter . The phone is overall
a very masculine phone in comparison to the chocolate i'd say but
no doubt the shine will be a big seller in the coming months. As
I said the looks sell it. If you want to get noticed - this is the
perfect mobile for you! Rating:

good, liking the whole metal effect, and defintley the whole mirror
idea- 4 the girls. few negative 4 those of you who are thinking
of gettin it 1) metal scratches so easily! and as i said only had
it a week and its scratched so much already n i do take care of
my phones. dread to think wat it will be like at 18months 2) only
1 alarm to be set (so no back ups for accidently turning them off):S
with 10 very very annoying tunes2choose from (which u realy dont
want to wake u up with - an annoyin start to the day ;))- u cant
change from these 10 or have mp3's etc. 3)same with message tones.
only 4 to chose from, no option of using your own. 4)the stupid
backlight on the phone wont randomly stop flashin all the time,
i have tried everything to stop it - from turning of the backlight
(but thn u cant text or use it in the dark) to changin brightness
etc, but still it does this whole random flashin of the backlight
- pretty annoyin when u r tryin to sleep! help if ne1 knows how
to stop it! or is this why it is called the shine? 5) not the loudest
phone either especially with 4example - texts etc as you dont have
any options of how often they alert you. its just the once it beeps.
6) camera quality is pretty good but has an automatic focus on it
- so when you are tryin to catch something moving - u have no chance
of takin it with out it bein blurred! but i think you can turn this
off, still its a standard setting. 7) only option with menu colour
is black with white writing. u cant change it. a bit boring really!
and a few postives 4u - the scroll middle button is cool when you
get used to it, really easy for using predictive text with it too.
it does have an expandable memory, thank god! n a gud extra is u
can view documents like powerpoint and word documents on it. :)
enjoy it i think its quite classy! also yes facing problem where
you need to pull out the battery and put it back in again, to start

As said, it is probably one of the best looking phones out there!
and as Helen said, it does have a very expensive feel to it. The
main annoying thing with the camera is the shutter lag, its about
1-2 seconds, and can be very annoying! The music player is very
unorganised, just one big list. and music files have to be put in
the MP3 folder is you wish to listen to them from the memory card,
and for them to be able be used in the MP3 list, they need to be
MP3 format, and the phone wont find the files if they are in files
in the MP3 folder, so you have to store them as one big list. The
display, when in mirror mode is very handy, so i can get my phone
out in classes, without getting it confiscated (sp?) I bought this

i think this phone is a good investment and definitely up to standards.
great camera, music quality and stunning looks. it also has the

I got this phone yday and i'm not sure if i'm taking it back or
not. It's a gorgeous phone to look at that's for sure but at the
same time i'd be scared to even take it out in the street!! It does
shine and it does attract attention which is great but standing
in awe in the shop and saying "i'll take it" then living with it
day to day are two different things and I think this phone screams
"ROB ME" far too much for me to be happy with. If you like that
sort of thing then buy it, it really does look gorgeous, if you're
like me and prefer something a little more understated (i'd prefer
black) then maybe you'll feel too much like the bling queen with
this gadget. Other than the fact the phone upstages me, I like the
functionality of it, the rotating wheel is sometimes annoying as
you can imagine as it doesn't always stop where you want it to,
texting has been a nightmare but then i've been using a nokia for
the last 3 years so what do i expect. Overall, i like this phone,
it's lovely, sleek and expensive looking and i'd love to feel like
it was me but i just don't think it is... maybe i'll come around
to it?? I hope so. 2 big gripes i'd like readers to note are: The
fact it makes calls but you can't hear anything... then the next
time you make a call it's ok. I have no idea whether this will resolve
or carry on happening but it only happens when i dial vodafone customer
service... weird. The deal breaker will have to be the reception,
apparently LG phones are the best for this... well not mine! This
loses reception in my bedroom if i so much as move it, my area is
not the best for reception quality but my old nokia used to be fine,
kept a steady 2 bars throughout a conversation, this one has 4 one
minute and it's out of service the next! I hope this isn't going
to constantly be the case.... i have no idea why i think it might
change but i'll hope. Overall, this is a nice phone other than the
reception problem. I'm sure many people will agree with me on that
but there'll always be some nitpickers who aren't happy. Rating:
