LG Pop Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The LG Pop is a super-compact budget touchscreen
phone. Despite its small size, it features a large touchscreen display
with a fantastic fun user interface. The Pop delivers all the goods
that you'd expect in this price range: a 3 megapixel camera, a media
player, a stereo FM radio, a web browser, Bluetooth wireless connectivity
and a memory card slot. Similar in many ways to the massive-selling
Cookie, the Pop offers an updated user interface, a more compact
design and an upmarket look.
Review:
November 2009. Last updated July 2010.
LG
have taken the massively popular Cookie
and turned it into the LG Pop, just in time for the Christmas market!
But although the Pop is an enhanced version of the Cookie, it's
actually even smaller, although cleverly LG have managed to keep
the screen the same size. That's because the screen extends over
almost the entire front face of the phone, giving it a sleek almost
frameless appearance. It's definitely a nice looking handset. LG
are keen to tell us that the Pop is the world's smallest 3 inch
touchscreen phone. But perhaps its more useful to say that the Pop
has a larger touchscreen than its rival the Samsung
Genio Touch, but is significantly more compact in all directions.
And the benefits of a large touchscreen display are immediately
obvious as soon as you start to use the Pop. As we're fond of saying,
when it comes to touchscreens, size really does matter! The extra
high resolution and the large physical size of the screen make pressing
virtual buttons a lot more fun. Turn the screen on its side for
a full QWERTY keyboard, making texting so easy.
The
Pop comes with some cool widgets that sit at the bottom of the home
screen and allow one touch access to applications such as messaging,
web browsing, etc. There are three home pages giving quick access
to contacts, multimedia, etc and making the Pop a really fun phone
to use. The contacts screen is particularly cool, showing who last
contacted you and how they did it. We'd say that the Pop is one
of the easiest to use phones around, but with plenty of customisation
and fun features to stop people getting bored with it.
The
multimedia features of the Pop are similar to other entry-level
touchscreen phones. The camera is pretty respectable, with 3 megapixels
and video recording too. There's a movie studio app and a slideshow
app for viewing photos and video. The music player handles virtually
any digital music format and there's also a stereo FM radio built
in. The web browser is excellent, although as the Pop lacks 3G,
web pages don't load as fast as we might have liked. If you get
bored there are plenty of apps supplied, including a surprisingly
addictive snakes and ladders game.
Whilst
the Pop doesn't have 3G, it is a quadband GSM phone, so you should
be able to take it anywhere in the world with you. In terms of connectivity,
it has Bluetooth and USB, which is everything you'd expect from
a phone priced at under £100.
The
Pop may not have added a lot more functionality compared with the
Cookie, but it matches the capabilities of other entry-level touchscreen
phones, and it does it in style with a beautiful large display,
a super compact body, and a fantastic user interface. We initially
awarded the Pop 4 stars because we were nervous about its reliability,
but six months on, we're revising our rating up to 5 stars, as it
seems to be a much more reliable phone than the Cookie. Consider
also the LG Cookie Lite.
Features
of the LG Pop include:
- 3 megapixel camera with digital zoom
- Video recording
- Touch sensitive screen: TFT LCD, 262k colours,
240 x 400 pixels (3 inches)
- Handwriting recognition

I wouldn't recommend. This was my first phone and I suppose is good
for a starter. After a period of time it becomes boring and there is
one game on this phone which you can play without having to pay! It
is good if all you want to do is text and make calls and use basic applications
like voice recorder and calculator. It has bad memory space... but I
like the fact that you can choose a character for all your contacts!

best. it is my first touchscreen fone. some people say that the battery
is rubish but i think it ok to be honest. there are lots of apps that
you could go on and u can never get board. the gamezs are easy to use
but its hard to win. i really like the drawing thing because u can draw
wat u want to draw. i have seen people with the lg cookie and i think
its better than the lg cookie. i like the size of this fone. even though
its small its a good thing because u can fit it in your purse as i do
sometimes when i go to school. the phone is so easy that i hardly needed
to read the instructions. the internet is ok but sometimes u cant go
on certain things like youtube because of age reasons.i think that u
should buy thid fone cos its easy, quick and even though it it small,
it has a big screen. thanks for reading dis p.s im just wondering if
it has a timer on it cos ive looked for it on the fone and i cant seam

This phone is pretty decent. However - it's not the phone I would chose.
I got it about a month ago as a replacement to my LG KC550. The good:
decent sized screen, pretty, stupidly loud speaker, that's about it.
The bad: camera's not that good, SLOW TEXTING ARGH, bad touchscreen,
lacks a good OS, not so good battery life. I couldn't live with this
for a year. It's supposed to be one of those cheap and cheerful phones
like the LG Cookie, and is okay if you like them kinda phones. But,
like the Cookie, it's So frustrating to text or type! ARGH! Apart from
the obvious size difference, the Cookie and Pop are about equal. the
good thing about the cookie is it has a stylus so you can use the keyboard
and handwriting stuff (which is on the Pop but not very good). Camera?
Okay, but hard to get to. the KC550 was much better. Internet? If you
just want to update your status or read some MLIAs or FMLs, then it's
fine. But serious web browsing? Just no. I would say the best part of
this phone is the great speaker! Seriously, on full volume it goes really,
really loud. But it does lack a 3.5mm jack, which is annoying considering
i lost the original headphones :(

this model isn't for you. The phone's touchscreen is very responsive
and the model has enough features to satisfy most people. I do get annoyed
when the screen automatically locks when a call is initiated and I'm
still finding a solution to that problem. Small and compact, you won't

its browser is patheticly slow as it lacks 3G. When web pages do eventually
load up, its a nightmare navigating around them.. Even basic sites like

Bought my LG POP from Phones4U yesterday, which was a steal at only
£49.99 on 02 compared with the hefty £78.95 price tag (+ £10 top up)
at Carphone Warehouse. To top it off, because I was on 02 Pay As You
Go and transfered to 02 Simplicity contract (at only £10 a month for
a monthly contract), I didn't have to pay the extra £10 (because normally
you have to buy it with a £10 top up), AND because I am a loyal 02 customer
they gave me an additional £10 off. All I had to pay was £39.99. Was
that a bargain or what?! So far so good. The battery power I'm not sure
about yet though because I've had to charge it after only a day of use
(but that might be because I've been using it a lot today, to play around
with all the features). You basically have 3 home screens. One which
is for speed dialling, one for widgets, and one for people's avatars.
You can leave it on the one you think you will use the most - me personally
probably the widget homescreen. As for the widgets, it comes with a
few, but it would be nice if I could download more. Unfortunately the
LG Application Store is running practically in every country except
Great Britain, so it seems we're not that 'Great' after all. Games -
it comes with 3. Two of which you have to pay for. The free one is a
kiddie's game with pictures of a dog, and different people. The ball
bounces and you have to touch the animal/face you think it is going
to bounce to before it gets there. The games that you have to pay for
includes a Brain Training Game which reminds me a bit of a psychometric
test. The other game is like a puzzle/challenge game with different
symbols. You can also get all the main applications on the screen (which
are in the categories of Communication, Utilities, Settings etc.) Turn
the mobile sideways and you can see the apps in landscape. Same goes
for when you're on the internet. Turn the mobile horizontal and you
can see more of the screen. All in all a GREAT Entry level touch screen
phone, and a GREAT Buy from Phones4U !

able to use every function on the phone so there are no wasted unused

and the fact the screen auto locks when you make a call is a real pain,
especially when you are onto an automated answer call. Pressing '1'
for this and '2' for that is impossible without having to unlock the
screen again. And it is not a question of turning off auto keypad lock
as this makes no difference. Seems LG have made it the default position
and there is nothing you can do to turn off this annoying feature. I
have now gone back to using my old Nokia with a real keypad so I can

Hi Skip, For an emoticon while texting, you press either the insert
button then go down, or if using predictive text then you can press
'1' twice for :) or 3 times for :-) and i think this is a very good
phone, its quite easy to use and the touchscreen is quite easy and responsive
too. One downside though is the lack of 3.5mm headphone connector which
unfortunatley it doesnt have and i couldnt find an adapter online yet.

I would recomend this phone,it has everything going for it thus far!
But the only things im having issues with are the backlight,is there
any way to keep it on longer? and also this might sound a bit stupid
but i cannot work out how to add an emoticon when texting, any help with
this would be appriciated. All in all though im impressed with it.

liked it to start with- but after 2weeks screen would not respond to
me and it sent loads of texts -what a waste. Got an exchange but then
4wks later same thing again- the touchscreen is rubbish. I dont use
it loads and it doesnt have a scratch on it- so even when it's immaculately
looked after it is still unpredictable. Asked virgin if i could change
it to a nokia within same price range but the woman on the phone was
unpleasant and started quoting terms and conditions- so now getting
another exchange for another LG Pop - which I dont want - and have 16months
contract of unpredictability to go -on track record I can imagine that
it will stop working again and I am left without a phone for days on
end- dont buy this one - even the guy at the virginmobile shop said
that he'd choose a nokia cos they are more reliable-

I bought this on O2 as my first touchcreen phone before I upgrade later
this year to the I-phone. The touchscreen is pretty faultless, nearly
as good as the i-phone and resolution is excellent. The menu is sensibly
laid out, and the shortcut keys make it easy. The camera is good but
unfortunately no flash. The only downsides are the web browser and the
games. The phone browser is slow, so I downloaded Opera Mini 4.2 (free)and
it works really well, I then downloaded Google maps to test it and it
works fine. Like a lot of phones, it comes only with trail version games
installed so you have to pay to get anything. The battery life is really
good so far, lasting about 3-4 days with moderate use including browsing.
The best thing is the size and the weight, its so slim, neat and light
yet still packs a punch - brilliant!

Answer for Kel below - go into; "settings" then "touch settings" then
"touchscreen effect" under "touch type" select "no feedback" that should
sort it out for you.

i would need, txts, emails and surfing the net and games to pass the

what I want in a phone which is to call, text and be my day planner
by using the calendar. Don't need it for surfing the net, thats what
my computer is for. If you're looking for a slick, easy to use, get
what u pay for then u can't go wrong with this one.

well, i've had my POP for a couple of weeks now and have to say i'm
not particularly impressed. First off, it claims to be the smallest
fully functioning touch screen phone which sounds great but there's
a reason touch screen phones are generally bigger... The screen is just
too small to hit the keys properly! The battery life on it is also pretty
poor. It seems to stay on 3 bars for a reasonable length of time but
as soon as it drops from 3 bars it then starts beeping it's running
out in no time, giving you very little warning. Finally, after just
two weeks the touch screen decided to just stop working for no reason
today. There's no damage on it and i've tried removing the battery and
all the usual stuff and after phoning O2 the guy in the call centre
told me they'd been getting loads of other people with the same problem.

I brought this phone on a random chance as my old Sony Erricson was
on its way out. Now before i had a dislike to LG phones as i used to
own a really old flip version, so was in two minds about this one. But
i have to say it is a fantastic little phone! I wanted an iphone but
cost prevented that so opted for the LG Pop and it smaller than expected
but still easy to use. The features are handy and the camera is good
and ok the touch screen did take some getting used to but is smooth
and easy to work. Texting is fine and easy to use especialy with predicted
text on...In other words this phone is an all round good phone. its
slim and light so fits nicely into a small bag or pocket. the only gripe
I have is there isn't any decent phone covers for the phone to prevent
the screen from being marked, which is ashame but thats a minor in the
phone and more a personal preference. deffinatly go for this phone if
you are thinking of it and lG will be realising a solar pannel for it
which sticks to the back of the phone so you can charge it in the sunlight...small
feature and kinda geeky but hey!

I bought the LG POP on Saturday, it's the first touch screen that I
have bought and I really can't fault it. It's stylish, easy to use,
has a good camera and all the functions are easy to find and easy to
use. Yes, sometimes you touch something by accident or it enters something
that you don't want to be in but that's because I'm heavy fingered.
Texting is very easy (something I was worried about) and battery life
is good. The screen is very clear, easy to see and the touch screen
is easy to use once you get used to it. This is not the IPhone, hence
the reason I think so many people don't like it as it is not as smooth
to use as the IPhone. I would strongly recommend this phone to anyone,
just give yourself time to get used to it and I'm sure you will come
to love it.

I had mine for a few days and having never dared to try touchscreen
before I am pleasantly surprised! This may be because I have smaller
fingers than most though! I also like the fact that it is possible to
calibrate the screen so that the user can ensure that the screen is
accurate to touch. The internet capabilities are good for a 2G phone
but I downloaded Opera Mini (which you can do by searching for it in
Google on the phone) and internet pages load pretty quickly. It is also
possible to link it to a we-based email account so you can send and
check emails on the phone. The screen is sharp and colours are vivid.
Personally I feel that if LG upgraded the camera to a 5mp with flash
and decent lens, and added HSDPA in the next model then they would have
created the perfect touch-screen phone! For the money however, this
is pretty good! Let's hope LG read this and add those upgrades!!! It
is the small size of the device which sells it!

when uploaded onto sites like facebook. Very easy to use and having
