LG Cookie KP500 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: The LG KP500 is a touchscreen phone for those on a budget. It's a compact device but with a large touchscreen display that's easy and fun to use. With a 3.2 megapixel camera, a media player, an FM radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a memory card slot, this phone has all the essentials. Although it misses out on 3G and a top class camera, it has most features that most people will want, and for the money you'd be hard pressed to find anything better than this!
Best buy: *Free* with free line rental (or a free Wii Fit or XBOX) from Mobiles.co.uk; or £97.82 on PAYG from the Carphone Warehouse.

The LG KP500 is nicknamed the Cookie. It's billed as an affordable touchscreen phone and in fact there are some amazing deals out there to tempt you. But before you rush off to buy one, join us in a tour of the Cookie, and let's find out what's missing compared to the more expensive rival touchscreen phones.

Let's start by looking at what you do get. You get a genuine touchscreen-driven phone (not just one with touch-sensitive buttons) that is controlled by pressing virtual buttons and icons with your finger or the stylus that's supplied with the phone. Pioneered by the iPhone (and others), touchscreen is the hottest trend in mobile phones in 2008, and it's hard to underestimate the amount of fun that you can have pressing virtual buttons on a screen. Especially for people like us, who don't get out enough. In the early days touchscreen phones were often tricky to use, but these days they're all pretty easy once you've got used to them. We don't think that the Cookie will pose any trouble, although some may find the stylus a nuisance. Anyway, great fun to use! The KP500 also has a built-in accelerometer, which simply means that it senses which way is up and automatically rotates the display. The virtual QWERTY keyboard slides into view when you turn the phone to landscape mode, which looks very cool. The accelerometer is also used when playing games, so you can tilt and turn the phone Wii-style to control movement. You can shake and flip the phone at other times to control various functions. It's all great fun, as long as you don't mind being stared at by passers-by.

The Cookie is more compact than most touchphones. It's about 20% smaller than the iPhone 3G and several millimetres thinner than its big brother, the LG Renoir. And weighing just 89g, it's probably the lightest touchscreen phone ever. We can't think of any lighter ones off the top of our head anyway. But, and this bit is important, LG have cleverly made the phone smaller without reducing the size of the screen. At 3 inches across, it's a big display by any standards, and when it comes to touchscreen, size really does matter! A bigger screen makes it easier to use, and the Cookie is definitely an easy phone to use.

So, the ergonomics are good, and the screen is good. What else is good? Well, it has a media player that plays most popular digital music formats. It also has a stereo FM radio. It's got a good web browser. It supports email and has a document viewer installed. Connectivity includes USB and Bluetooth, and the operating frequency is quadband GSM, so you should be able to use the phone anywhere in the world.

Now let's take a look at what's missing.

The camera is not as good as the 5 or 8 megapixel cameras seen in LG's high-end phones. It's limited to 3.2 megapixels, and there's no autofocus but this is reasonable when you consider the price. The memory is also more limited at 48 MB, although you can add a microSD memory card to bring this up to 8GB. It's not 3G and there's no WiFi, so web browsing probably isn't a good option, despite the big screen, which is a shame.

Inevitably there are trade-offs between price and features. We feel that LG have got the balance just right with the Cookie. By removing the features that most people won't miss, and by installing an average camera, they've not only slashed the cost, but have also made the phone more compact and easier to use in many ways. As long as you won't miss high speed web browsing or the camera quality, you can have all the benefits of the latest touchscreen phones for a fraction of the cost. For example, on contract you can expect to get the LG KP500 with half-price line rental for the duration of the contract, or a freebie such as a Nintendo Wii Fit, an XBOX 360 or even a couple of hundred quid cashback! With deals this generous, it's very hard to find fault with the Cookie.

This phone is excellent for the price. Got one recently and am really happy about it. Previously had a Viewty which was fine but this is thinner lighter and has a hidden stylus which is great. Altogether impressed with this phone but only thing I miss is a flash on the camera for night time or indoor shots but other than that this is an excellent value for money phone!!!

Had it about 8 weeks and find it a great little phone. Very intuitive menu system and lots of features for the money. The camera is a bit on the low quality side especially indoors as there is no flash and no autofocus. The music player and radio are not bad quality. I have had a couple of glitches with this phone i.e. I cannot get the phone to sync with my Windows Vista computer through the usb lead yet it works fine through bluetooth. The other problem I find is that it looses words that I have input into the text dictionary. All in all I give this phone a 4 out of 5 as it is good value for £100

I just picked up the LG KP500 yesterday, probably the best phone Ive ever had, especially at £97.50 from Carphonewarehouse. I asked CPW if there had been any returns or reported faults, None! despite some feedback sites reporting some faults. One thing that is important if your syncing the KP500 with your PC and its running Windows Vista When loading the LG PC Suite Software, you might find the setup wizard disappears, after you select your language. To locate the the setup wizard, click on your windows button (the button with windows icon on it) it will bring up the task bar at the bottom of you screen and you can highlight and bring back the setup screen. Next, (This took some figuring out!!!) you may also find that the PC and LG Suite cannot find your LG500. Follow the instructions to set up the PC Sync from the manual, but crucially, when selecting the USB Connection Mode, you must select the bottom option "Always Ask" this then allows the LGH KP500 to be recognised by your PC and the LG Software Suite. This means Windows will detect the phone and bring up a software management options, so you can "drag & drop" from/to the phone or you can use the LG PC interface. thats the only problem I had, and I think its Vista related! Otherwise, a fantastic phone! excellent price! LG have done very well 5* rating

I fell for this phone as soon as I saw it, read the reviews, couldn't wait to get it. Bought it from CPW on Sunday, didn't realise at first that it wasn't doing what I asked, eg putting items on the front screen, diary entries, saving words in texting mode. I then realised it had been switching itself off, but not just switching off and re-starting but everything was being wiped out, including all text messages. Took the phone back and exchanged it for another, this did exactly the same, requested a refund, they weren't happy but agreed. Was gutted as I loved the look, I went and bought the Sony W595, the Cookie was very quickly wiped out of my memory as the Sony is a proper phone, excellent.

I just got back from the Carphone Warehose (today 4th Dec) where I had a full demondtration of the LG KP500 phone and I have got to say the phone is by far the best on the market at under £100 (plus £10.00 topup). I was contemplating buying this phone and when I read some of the reviews on here I was a bit worried and confused as to whether it was a good reliable phone or not. Now having a full demonstration the phone is great. I have now re-read the other reviews and it seems that the complaints are mostly very personal about for example, the ability to text on a touch screen as apposed to a conventional keypad, T9 (which is crap on any phone until you get used to it) battery life (which always seems poor on any new phone becuase of the initial novelty factor use)Phone re-booting (the phone is in fact like a mini computer and should be treated as such) working slow ( you may need more memory). All in all I think anyone considering buying one of these phones should pick a shop and go and get a demonstration for themselves and not rely on thess personal reviews, I did and I have having one for my birthday next week. I would give it 5 stars for now and review it again once I have had it for a month.

The phone looks dead cool even though its a bit plastic fantastic and really nice to use so long as you have no intention of using it as a phone (ie, texts and calls) actually calling is fine, but texting is a complete nightmare. Maybe i'm just a chubby fingered, hamfisted technomoron but i seemed to manage to press every "button" with one finger, and anyway whats wrong with real buttons, and the stylus, god the stylus can you imagine the looks people would give you if you whapped that out and started texting away. I got it on my new contract but i'm gonna get a nokia 6300 tomorrow my advice would be don't buy anything that doesn't say Nokia or Sony Ericsson on the top.(rant over) I really liked the touch screen for pics and video's especially the way you can slide between pics like on an ipod touch or an iphone although having played on a rich mates iphone, it doesn't compare but neither does the price so its not a fair comparison. The drawing pad is great fun and the games aren't too shabby. Its nice and small aswell unlike some other touch phones i've seen. If you want a touch screen phone for a hundred quid on payg or free on a £15/month conract you cant really argue but the touch screen texting drove me mad after 2 texts. I've only owned the phone for 2 hours so this is perhaps not the most considered, reliable review ever but i vow never to but another touch screen phone. Only 3 stars cos it's not my cuppa tea but i suppose its a good phone especially for the price. Peace out, may the force be with you all.

I was so excited about getting this phone, but now I wish I hadn't, pretty disappointed really. It's very very slow, switches off a lot on it's own and unlocks by its self. The touch screen for texting is awful and gets me really frustrated when it doesn't go onto the right letter. I'm kind of upset to say that I'm selling it to buy a phone with buttons. But if you don't mind texting very slowly then otherwise it's an awesome phone

This phone doesn't work properly - official. I ended up trying three LG Cookies and they all had the same faults. The phone reboots when opening a business card, the calendar feature is useless and the keypad is below average. I contacted LG a number of times, and despite them saying they would call me, they just said they weren't aware of any of the faults. Their customer service is similar their Cookie phone - useless. Avoid at all costs and buy a brand that is actually renowned for making decent phones.

I've not bought the phone yet but have done some pretty lengthy research (I'm a geek - and proud lol) About 90% of the reviews everywhere are positive but there are some pescimists that like to compare it to the iphone! I was playing around with one the other day in the carphone warehouse and the virtual "buttons" are ok, they sometimes need to be tapped a couple of times but are mostly responsive, the accelerometer is an amazing feature that puts it back in the iphone league, the games are easy to grasp and alot of fun! Go on the carphone warehous and there is a link that I found interesting because it lets you look at the phone in 3D!(you need java to see it) Overall I'm proud to say that I'm gonna get a cookie! well done LG!! *It's a shame you can only give it 5 stars*

It is a very good phone and the camera quality is very good for the price. All of my friends constantly nag to go on the drawing panel as they find it so amusing. The LG Cookie is virtually perfect. Yes people say the video recording is bad, but its not! Its not the smoothest but its really good! The camera is fantastic! Touch is really good too! The only problem is even when you have your earphones in (the ones LG give you) the sound volume can't go down so only you and no one else can hear it. Basicly, the lowest volume there is, is still hearable by surrounding people! Other than that this is a really good phone to get!

"if you get it from the carphone warehouse does earphones & a USB cable come in the box? does it come with a screen cleanerr 2?" You get earphones and a USB cable, yeah. No screen cleaner, though you don't really need one as it comes with a protective cover already on it and one spare. Faults I have found with this phone; The dictionary on T9 mode is rubbish. I keep adding words to it then the next time I try to write them, it says it's not recognised and gives me the option to add it to the word book again. The phone has reset itself four times in the week I've had it. Something on my phone is now called "Iy gaher $ 'apps".. which I'm assuming means "My games and apps". This has happened before and led to the phone crashing. The keypad lock system. I usually keep my phone in my back pocket so it's easily pulled out when I get a text, phone call or want to change tracks on the music player. Last night I was sat down, and the next thing I know I can hear the sound it makes when you're phoning someone. I stand up, get my phone out and it's ringing someone. How it managed to do that I'll never know, but it looks like I'll have to be changing the pocket it's in, which is frustrating. Bit gutted I'm stuck with this phone for another 17 months, really.

Got the phone a few days back, and it provides a great user experience. However we noted a few bugs, which are detailed below. I would appreciate it if other owners of KP500 try this, and let us know if you also face the same bugs. Bug1: I used the calendar widget to enter some appointments and birthdays. However when trying to access a date from the widget calendar to see the appointments, the phone reboots. It shows the LG logo and comes back to main screen. Bugs 2: Calendar entries: 1 .when I save any appointment either as an anniversary or birthday and set the repeat as annual, it puts around 14 days of additional entries for the same appointment in all the subsequent months - 14 in Jan, 14 in Feb and so on. 2. I then changed the repeat to once and saved it, but that caused the whole appointment to be deleted from the calendar 3. I saved an appointment as repeating weekly and it saved just fine. However if you give an expiration date for the recurring appointment, then the whole appoitnment is deleted from the calendar Bug 3: Alarm I have saved a second alarm on my phone. However when the 2nd alarm rings, it shows the name/text from the 1st alarm, which reads Morning Alarm Bug 4: Syncing with Outlook I tried to use the sync tools to upload my contact list. I tried to upload from Outlook 2000 on my home computer, and Outlook 2003 in my laptop. It does not work with either. It starts to sync, reads all the contacts in Outlook (around 293 contacts), and then disconnects connection to the phone and provides a message that 'Synchronisation failed', but does not provide any comments/feedback about why it failed We are still checking out all the features and will post more bugs as we find it. I am however keen to know if anyone else is facing the same problems

I've had the Cookie for 5 days now and on the whole I am very impressed and highly recommend it. The only real letdown is the quality of the picture camera. For £99 on PAYG it's a great phone, and the fact it's touch screen makes it even better - a poor-man's iPhone of course as it lacks 3G and Wi-Fi, but this can handle MMS messages and has a video camera... Good points: Nice big, clear screen. (240x400 pixels) Screen protector - provided - works perfectly, no marks or scratches (as yet!). Video camera is not too bad! Touch function is great - really responsive, can "swipe" finger to scroll etc. Nice mini-vibrate feedback when touching screen. Great menu system - no more than 2 or 3 touches to access most features. The stylus - hidden away in base of phone, you'd never know it was there. The stylus again! Ideal for browsing web and just navigating the phone. Photo/video editing - a wealth of tools here. Battery life - 4 days of fairly heavy use before I had to recharge. Input - choose from QWERTY keyboard, numeric keypad or stylus pen/handwriting. Handwriting recognition - about 95% accurate (but one character at a time, so too slow to use I think?). Nice and slim - about 11mm. Bad points: Picture camera is poor quality. Browsing web, sometimes you "click" on a link with the stylus but the phone thinks you want to zoom in and out of the page instead. Phone sometimes resets itself (has happened 3 times in 5 days). Audio quality when playing music is a bit flat. No countdown timer function - always handy when cooking!

What a phone!!! Got this phone last night, and i'm in love with it. After reading the reviews on here i decided to get one as a sort of early xmas prezzie. The battery didn't last long on the factory charge, but after leaving it charging over night, it still has 3 bars almost 8 hours later (and i have been using it a lot). At first the 'buttons' are a bit hard to get used too, but i'm getting the hang of it; texting is a bit hard at first, but i text a lot (average 50 texts a day sometimes!) so i've got used to that, though with the keyboard it helps if you have fingernails, or use the stylus. I wouldnt rate the camera as amazing, as i had a k800i before, and the camera's on them are immense, though, they were made with the camera in mind, this phone was made for the gadget lovers, and as a gadget lover, i can honestly say- its my favourite new toy. Music plays clearly, and you can change most of the settongs on the phone. For example, i didnt like the kaytone, or the vibration when you pres sed a 'button' and i managed to turn that off without looking at the instructions, and this is my first LG phone... before this phone i swore by sony ericsson handsets. I dont play the games that often, but thay are rather cool with the motion sensor. The internet didnt work the first time i used it, but after changing a few settings it worked fine (i used opera mini on my k800i, i wouldn't use it on this one as it makes it rather confusing, the built in browser is the best option for me). Oh and a big thumbs up to LG for giving us a screen protector! I'm obsessive about keeping things in like new condition, and the first thing i did when i got it out of the box was put it on! (though it can make your screen less sensitive according to the instructions, though mine is completely fine) if you want to see how the phone works, and whats in the box, go on youtube, i watched an 'unboxing video', and 3 ten minute(-ish) video's showing you what the Cookie is all about. ************ ***AND if you want a memory card for it, when you buy the handset in Carphone warehouse, you get the memory card for half price i think, my 2gb was 6.99***************** you'll have to ask about that. Conclusion of my essay: For the price, this phone is Amazeee! Its got loads of things on it, so you wont get bored. You get used to the keypad after a while (put it this way, i'm not going back to buttons), though, if your wanting a decent camera, you might want to look elsewhere, as this phone has no focus, or flash, so close up pictures in the dark wont work. Though for the odd one or two, its better than nothing right!!!! 5 starss ***** :D:D (sorry for any spelling mistakes :S)

The only slight concerns I have is that my predictive text (T9) is rubbish and thinks I am Polish or something. Also the alarm system is a little strange, my seems to try and set alarms for the same day, even though you want it for the next morning? Also camera could do with auto-focus. Good value though.

I have had it for a fortnight and so far I like it! The only downside is that I don't like the headphones (they are really bad) and because you don't get a 3mm jack adaptor to plug your own headphones in, you're stuck with them. It also has some strange volume settings, if you want to play your music quietly without your earphones in and just drift to sleep then this really isn't going to be any good for you, its quite loud. Apart from these niggling factors I am happy with the Cookie and would reccomend it to others.

Picture and video quality adequate considering it is fix focus etc. I am 50+ and hate texting, however with this phone with so many ways to input text I am happy to text now. Menu is easy to navigate. As for the software well I have Windows Vista and it works perfectly. The sound quality is good and loud! it has gadgets throughout the menu to keep you amused. Pros: I bought this phone on Tuesday and after 4 days of use I must say that this is a great phone to use, the touch sensitivity is very responsive, the camera and video comes out reallly nice on the screen. It weighs only 86G and only 11.9mm thick and feels wicked. It's the lightest full touchscream phone ever made. Cons: Reboots by itself about 1 to 3 times a day at random times even when no applications are being used.(I will exchange with another LGKP500 handset with Carphone Warehouse next week if it continue's to happen more than 1 times a day) No flash for the camera. Overall this is a great phone packed with amazing feature for an unbelivable prize tag (£99.95). Defenitely worth every penny. Well done to LG for making this handset affordable for the masses.

I bought this phone after reading the good reviews on here. It is a cute phone and easy to use. The camera isn't too bad, probably as good as my old W810 during day. At night inside I found I got a better colour setting it to "sunny" otherwise pictures looked pale. The touch screen is pretty good, although I don't have anything to compare this to. I liked the ringtones and that you could switch off the key tones. The browser was a little slow, but useable for checking email. The keylock is a little annoying although can be switched off. When texting if you look away for a while and go to resume texting you find the screen has gone black and the keylock has appeared. Pressing a button then meant unlocking the keypad and finding the text in draft to continue. Maybe by turning off the keylock or changing the power down option would stop this. The biggest drawback for me were the touchscreen keys. I found the keys much too small for texting using a thumb only, as I often hit another key (and I've got slim hands). Using the keyboard was better with the stylus (neatly hidden in the phone), but I found this not really convenient when on the go and you just want to send a quick text. I showed this phone to my friend's son and my young newphew and both said "cool phone, I want one!" especially when shown the dice game. There you have it, cute phone but maybe more appropriate for a young person, or someone young at heart who isn't a heavy texter? I've returned mine as I couldn't get on with the keys, but I imagine this will be a popular phone. I've now got a Nokia 3600 and for me it is much easier to text.

Have had mine since Tuesday, am very impressed. no crashes (have probably jinxed it now), UI & menu system are fast and really easy to figure out. texting is so easy (was a bit worried as it's my first touchscreen phone but it's great) I put it on to charge at about 6pm on Tuesday night for it's first charge, at 1.30am 'battery full' appeared on the screen and it's still saying 'high' in the status and I've been using it loads just playing round with settings etc. the ringtones & text alerts that come with it are a bit naff but that's easy to sort by transfering your favourite song to the phone and setting it as your ringtone, have also discovered a great website for downloading wallpapers, ringtones & sms alerts for it. 2 things have bugged me so far 1 of which has been sussed out now, the first one was waiting for the screen to lock after I'd done something cos I didn't want to put it in my pocket with the screen active, sussed after about 45 minutes (doh should have read the manual) there's a button on the side of the phone that lock/unlocks the screen. other thing that's bugging me is I downloaded some ringtones & sms alerts and now when I go into the music player it lists them as tracks on there. but overall, a fabulous phone that I am incredibly happy with

My first impression when I first saw the Cookie, was that it felt a little bit cheap, however, I was comparing it to the renoir, which is a far superior phone and felt much nicer. However, at 4 times the price on the PAYG option, and after considering the Viewty, which, in my opinion is less attractive & too chunky, I decided to give the Cookie a try. In the past my phone use has been mostly texting, and maybe the odd call. I rarely use the camera or the mp3 and I occasionally browse on-line to look up information. I have to say that I am so far very impressed with the phone and as yet can't really fault it. For the price, I think it is excellent value for money and covers all my needs. Sound quality is not as good as the Sony walkman phone that I had previously, but then I never used the mp3 anyway. All in all a very nice phone - I am very pleased with it and would recommend it.

Not tested the camera as i do not have much need for this, texting is easy with phonepad and qwerty keyboard. Voice clarity is excellent. Battery life is good. 2 minor negative points - scrolling up and down the address book is a pain and not easy to perform. Secondly when using an automated answering service that requires you to press options on your keypad, firstly the keypad has to be activated but the phone keeps locking the screen every five seconds during the call, therefore you have to keep unlocking before pressing the keypad. However do not let these minor points distract you from a very good phone and at £99 its a steal. go and buy one, you will not be disappointed.

The screen is a real beauty and the touch screen is very responsive ,has plenty of features that you could ever want and even a minute or more message alert reminder as in some Samsungs ,great to see LG do this im always missing my txts but not with this beauty . The stylus is well hidden too at the base of the mobile ,you can use your pinkys but i have big hands and fingers so the stylus is my best option. Very easy to use i have not even used the manual as of yet ,the widgets are great too you can put them were you like on the screen or shake the mobile to auto-line them up for you (nice and straight )just with a shake of the mobile easy or what . With regard the Calendar and the yearly reminder i have not tried this but if it is a fault LG will at some stage i am sure bring out a update via the update service as most mobile phone companies do nowadays .If my LG KP500 mobile is fault free until Xmas i will be buying another because at the end of the day its a bargain at the price for such a great cheap touch screen mobile. Only slight letdown no 3G but ive tried the Internet access and it runs nice and quick with edge and the pages turn at the tilt of the handset which ever way you prefer to read your web pages etc ,very impressed so far, fingers crossed all remains as good as it is now ,id be a very happy chappy .I hope i have helped a few doubters ,you cant buy better for £ 99.99 and get all these features in my opinion, if you want more you'll have to pay more simple as that ,you cant expect everything wifi ,3G 5 mega pixel camera etc etc , for the small price of £99.99 and no i don't work for LG i run a Landscaping Business .Regards Pete

Firstly to Zack, virgin mobile uses t-mobile network so your simcard should work on it. If you bought the phone from carphonewarehouse it comes unlocked. I got this phone 4 days ago, from the above retailer on pay as you go and love it. It is light to hold and texting and emailing is easy, once you get used to the touchscreen menu. To Vijay, if you are on Orange or O2 and have registered your simcard, you can download music and ringtones but it seem the phone is too new to download games quite yet, but someone else may find out when the games will be available. when making calls, scrolling down the names you have apply gentle pressure so you don't pick out the wrong person in error, then apply firmer pressure on the person name you wish to call. Call clarity was excellent and the menu system is quite good. Having a keylock/music hold button and the silencer (vibrate only)aka lower volume key on the sides of the phone is very useful so don't have to through various menus. The music player's clarity is excellent and downloading music from network's wapsite was good. The phone has a slot for mini sd card but memory on phone is good. The phone has usually organiser applications, calender, to do list, events list, alarm , calculator, world clock, as well as camera and video recorder. The phone has no case to protect it from fingerprints smuges, so you can buy a lg viewty style wallet from a highstreet mobile case/simcard seller for a £5. Recommend this phone to though who want a touchscreen phone without a contract and do alot of texting, emailing or facebook usage, just keep you adapter nearby if use the phones other applicaions like the music player/radio regularly.

Well, what can I say. Got this phone yesterday from the Carphonewarehouse for 109.99 and so far, I am very pleased. The touch screen is easy to use, and I love the way the actual phone feels. It's quite large, but feels expensive! Probably the best phone LG have brought out. Keep up the good work. But to be honest, better battery life would be good.
