In a nutshell: The GW520 is an enhanced version of the
popular KS360. It's a touchscreen phone with a slide out QWERTY
keyboard. Ideal for texters, the GW520 also benefits from 3G, making
it an excellent device for all kinds of mobile communication, including
web browsing. The camera is basic and it lacks video calling, but
for the price this phone offers a lot. Best buy: *Free* from Three
(Blue or Silver); or on Pay as you Go for £59.95 from
Dialaphone
(White) or £89.99 from Three
(Blue or Silver).
Review:
August 2009. Last updated January 2010.
The LG GW520 is an upgraded version of the very
popular KS360. The KS360 has been a big
seller in the first half of 2009, thanks to its QWERTY keyboard
and cheap price. This has made it an extremely popular phone for
texters - like a Cookie, but with the
bonus of a proper keyboard. The GW520 builds on the strengths of
the KS360 and looks to us like it's going to be another smash.
The GW520 looks like a Cookie, with a touchscreen
display, but turn it on its side and you can pull out a full QWERTY
keyboard. The keyboard is styled differently to the KS360, but it
works very well. The slide gives plenty of room for keys, and we
found the size and spacing of the keys excellent. The responsiveness
of the keys is top notch too, making this a step above virtual keypads
on touchscreen phones. The overall size of the GW520 is slightly
more than the KS360 and it's a heavier phone too, but it's not a
brick! This is a phone that's almost ideal for texting and messaging,
and it incorporates features like threaded SMS, which makes text
conversations flow more naturally. It can support email too. We
also like the brand new feature of avatars. This lets you set up
avatars for your closest friends on the home screen, and you can
then click an avatar to view messages, etc.
The touchscreen measures 2.8 inches across, which
is slightly less than a Cookie, but more than the KS360. Generally
the rule is that larger touchscreens are easier to use, but in this
case because the keyboard slides down, there's more screen space
available than you might expect. In terms of usability, we think
that this outperforms the Cookie and other budget touchscreen phones.
In addition to the QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen, there are conventional
buttons for making and ending calls, etc.
The GW520 costs more than the KS360, but it has
some significant enhancements too. The most important of these is
3G. While the KS360 was a triband 2G phone, the GW520 has 3G and
supports broadband internet access right up to 7.2 Mbps with HSDPA.
This moves it beyond a simple call and text mobile into the realms
of fast web browsing, facebook, youtube, etc, making it a thoroughly
modern phone.
Other features of the phone include a 3 megapixel
camera with video recording, music player, FM radio and Java games.
Connectivity is by Bluetooth. Memory is limited to 40 MB, but the
phone can accept microSD cards up to 8GB, providing enough storage
for 2,000 - 4,000 music tracks. Battery life is good.
We like the GW520 very much, and we think that
it offers a lot more than the entry level touchscreen phones that
have dominated the marketplace in the first half of 2009. Its key
benefits are the QWERTY keyboard and 3G. On the other hand, it has
a camera that's average at best, and is missing video calling. We
think that's a sacrifice that many people will be willing to make.
The only word of warning that we have about this phone is that users
of both the KS360 and the Cookie have reported software glitches
and occasional freezing of their phones. Whilst we have not experienced
any problems ourselves with the GW520, it is built on the same platform
as these other phones, so it's reasonable to expect that there may
be some problems here too.
Update: Many of our users have reported that the
GW520 will stop sending texts if the inbox becomes full. The solution
is to delete texts so that your inbox does not become full.
The new Samsung
Genio Slide offers the same features as the GW520, but we think
is a better phone. Check out our Samsung Genio Slide review before
you commit to the GW520.
Features
of the LG GW520 include:
Camera: 3 megapixels
Video camera
Display: TFT, 262,000 colours, 240 x 400 pixels
(2.8 inches)

just waiting untill it happends agian. 2.The earphone are rubbish
and im having trouble finding good ones or an adapter. 3. You need

phone at all, I see myself using my nails on the phone to use it
and i bite my nails wich makes it alot harder. The phone isnt very
good and i wish i just got the Nokia music express wich i planned

Ive lived with this phone for five months now but am going to phone
orange tomorrow and ask them to change it. The query keypad is great
and by far away the best feature. The shell is pretty robust, battery
life is ok and it does not feel too cheap. These are good points.
Unfortunately it has far more bad points including; The operating
system is clumsy. Sound quality is moderate to poor. Screen freezes
(almost every time the phone is used) Screen blanks out (not good
when you need to call an ambulance). keys stop working (see above)
Whilst the screen is a good size you do need a stylus to make it
work properly (none supplied). i have used mobiles consistently
since the mid 90's and i can't recall having a phone as poor as
this one. It would i suspect make a great novelty phone your kids
but if you are are an adult who wants a tool that works then do
yourself a favour an avoid this thing. Rating:

I don't know why people have been saying bad things about this phone
(can you change the review if something goes wrong?) I got this
phone for christmas and the only thing i can fault is the speed
and perhaps the battery. This phone is great for text addicts like
me. It could do with a few improvments but i believe the fantastic
price would be affected by these. Although the phone looks quite
chunky it doesn't feel heavy. I am glad i choose this phone and
it was a great christmas present. However i have found that i have
to delete my texts when i get up to about 50 messages to keep the
speed. The touchscreen is amazing and although the qwerty keypad
may be a little non responsive at times. It works on the whole and
is fantastic to text with. I am planning to get a sim only plan
for this phone because i can not handle 300 texts a month. SO if
you text alot already i would recommend getting this phone on a
contract. Apart from the few minor issues this is a great phone
and i would recommend it no matter what anyone else says. Rating:

is just perfect! The best thing is the office document feature!
Its fantastic! especially the fact that i can download silly powerpoints
from silly websites and open them on my phone. It has many many
benefits and one of them is that all the games you can download
to it use the touch screen just perfectly! Don't go running to buy
it though. it has one downside... If you have about 300 messages
in your phone (in my case thats 1 month worth of texting) then you
won't be able to send any. You would have to delete them! also if
you change it from vertically to horizontally you might get a funny
screen disturbance. Im my case its worth it although the messaging
bit does bother me now and then... :) LG rocks! Rating:

the memory it is expandable up to 8 gig. I have a 16 gig card in
mine fitted and working. I'll give it an average score because i
am not ready to give it a proper rating yet. Will do later when
i know the phone better. So far i am impressed though. Rating:

you have to be VERY careful when it is in your bag! - it unlocks
itself very easily and proceeds to ring your contacts without you
knowing about it, and also enjoys to put them on loudspeaker (especially
when in lessons / libraries). It also sends blank texts to people
when its unlocked itself - i'm constantly checking it to make sure
its behaving. when i first got it i had some issues with it refusing
to send texts, but i took the battery out & replaced it and that
seemed to sort things every time. the camera / music features are
okay, the qwerty keyboard is good but it doesnt like you switching
between that and the "normal" mode. Rating:

To Drain The Battery Very Quickly. I Got It Really Soaked Yesterday
Cos I Dropped It In The Sink By Accident But All What Happened Was

It Is Alright Now (: I Would Recomend It To Be Honest Just Don't

registers that I press Send but does not send it. To send it I have
to take the battery out and turn it on again. My friend bought the

listening to music. the kay board is so cool! but if you have big

I bought the phone last week, so I'm not plagued with problems so
far(touch wood). I'm really amazed about the quality. It feels sturdy,
the extended keyboard is big enough to use comfortably. The camera
is indeed not that good, but to be honest, mobiles as a camera are
a joke anyway. I think the phone is dirt cheap compared to iPhone.
About freezing up, no experience so far, but this sort of problems
might be related to overloading the phone with files. If the phone
has not enough memory to operate properly, you get this sort of
problems. The same would happen with a computer, actually. So, if
you experience this problem, have a look and see how much memory
you have left. The ideal is to keep 40% free. Hope this helps? Rating:

This is the worse phone ive ever exprienced. Within a day of getting
it, the screen mucks up when i use the qwerty keypad underneath.
Its frooze everyday ive had it, so i keep having to take out battery
to turn it off then turn it back on. Battery lasts a day, and i
hardly even use my phone with everything on power save to reduce
time? So would not want to no how long it lasts with high usage.
I spoke to lg staff who said "download software online." but none
even avalible. Phone looks good and qwerty keypad is a great idea.
But this is the worse phone ive ever spent my money on. Im planning
on taking it back asap. (And ive only had it for a week so far!) Rating:

The screen is more responsive than that of the cookie and the menu
system has been updated very slightly (but cookie users will be
familiar). The 3G works efficiently and effectively, plus the keyboard
is a blast to use. so easy, and capable. Much more so than the LG
KS360's. Altogether, a superb combination of the best bits of cookie

Had this phone for a fortnight now on the orange network. It is
similar to both the lg KS360 which also has a pull out keyboard
underneath for writing emails and texting. The menu system is in
the same layout to the lg cookie. The phone is a bit more heavier
than the former two, but what I like about it is that you can configure
you email accounts to the phone, so you can download you emails
to the phone and reply either using the "touchscreen pad" or pull
out the proper keypad underneath. When on the internet, reading
email or texting, you can have the phone screen in standard portrait
mode or turn it to the landscape mode, which can be useful. When
I at work, I tend to have the phone on the silent mode, and the
phone vibration mechanism is loud which is good. Calls and speaker
phone has a good clear sound. It does have an camera and mp3 player,
so I would recommend buying a micro sd card if you intend to store
loads of photo or music on the phone. It has a lock button on the
right hand side, so you dont accidental press buttons when in your
pocket. Battery life is good but if you use it frequently for email/internet
access or as music player the battery will run down quicker. It
also comes with a choice of screen, such as orange grid square which
shows the frequently used contacts or by touching the screen to
left/right you get orange icon menu of the orange internet, orange
world, the alarm and the widget icon that opens a shortcut to music,
all types of messages, calendar, speed dials numbers etc. This phone
is not the sexiest phone in the lg range but it a good workhorse,
on par to nokia 5800, blackberry pearl, samsung tocco lite. Rating:
