In a nutshell: The
Crystal continues LG's tradition of innovative design, with the
world's first transparent keypad! The slide-down keypad is touch-sensitive
and completely transparent, and the main display is touch-sensitive
too. The display is fantastically high in resolution with 800x480
pixels and 16M colours. The Crystal also features an 8 megapixel
camera, MP3 player, FM radio, 1.5GB memory plus a memory card slot,
HSDPA and WiFi. It's very expensive though! Check out the top 10

LG
Crystal Review
Review:
July 2009.
LG are well known for innovation in their designs,
and the Crystal is another unique design concept. It's the first
mobile with a transparent keypad. Like the Samsung
Tocco Ultra, the LG GD900 combines a touchscreen user interface
with a slide-down numeric keypad. The difference here is that the
keypad is touch-sensitive too and is completely transparent! There
are no individual keys, just a flat transparent surface with numbers
etched on it. You just need to press the right part of the surface
to enter numbers. The main display is a large touch-sensitive screen,
with a phenomenally high resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and 16 million
colours. It's larger than the Tocco Ultra screen too, at 3 inches
diagonal. The main display uses LG's S-Class user interface with
its hallmark rotating cube, as featured on phones like the LG
Arena and Viewty Smart. There
are some extra features such as gesture shortcut (draw a character
on the touchscreen to access your music, inbox, etc - gimmicky!)
and multi-finger touch (to control zooming, etc.) We like the user
interface and we absolutely love the hi-res screen. Despite the
novelty factor it works well and is perfectly usable.
However, although we were expecting to be blown
away by the appearance of the phone, it took us all of 3 seconds
for the novelty of the transparent keypad to wear off. There's nothing
wrong with it, you understand, and it's quite cool to be able to
touch a piece of transparent plastic and make it light up and do
stuff, but it wasn't as cool as we were expecting it to be. Especially
when you consider the huge price tag of this phone - something like
£500 sim-free.
For a phone this expensive, it had better have
more than just a see-through keypad and a snazzy screen! It does
have an excellent camera, with an 8 megapixel sensor, face detection,
autofocus and a high-quality lens. It has life's essentials, including
an MP3 player, FM radio, web browser, high-speed internet (HSDPA
7.2 Mbps), WiFi and plenty of memory (1.5GB built-in plus a card
slot), but surprisingly it doesn't have GPS.
It's a funny one, the Crystal. LG clearly tried
hard at their brainstorming session, and came up with a good idea,
but it's just far to expensive to become a popular handset. Buy
it if the design works for you and you have buckets of disposable
cash. Otherwise, you'd be better off with a conventional touchphone
like the LG Viewty Smart or a
touch-slide like the Samsung Tocco
Ultra.
Features
of the LG GD900 Crystal include:
8 megapixel camera with Schneider Kreuznach
lens and face-detection autofocus

I got this phone a few days ago, its pretty good, but it keeps freezing
and the only way to revive it is to take the battery out. It seems
that many people are having this problem... The camers is quite
good and its a pretty good phone. Mine cost only £299 for the handset
with no contract... If the battery goes really fast, its coz your
supposed to leave it to charge overnight, even when it says its
fully charged. Its in the manual. The manual is bad though, its
very unclear and I have no idea how o create the gesters...any ideas? Rating:

I got this phone about a month ago and the first time I got it home
I charged it up to full and within half an hour the phone turned
itself off and took about 15 minutes to turn back on. When I managed
to get it to work the battery was flat after a full charge. At first
I thought ok just teething problems but its done it about 5 times
now and now im finding it locks up during mid text and I have to
remove the battery to get it to work again. Third and Final problem
when it does lock up and start again I receive texts that have been
sent to me from about half an hour before. Because the fault is
so intermittent the CPWH cannot exchange or send of for repair without
seeing the fault itself. So im stuck with a tempermental phone which
clearly has something wrong with it. Other than that its snazzy
but the novelty has completely worn off. Phew bit of a essay there

Ok, first off. The iPhone wont let you have mp3 ringtones and the
contract is stupid! (£35 a month and they want to still charge me
for texts?) Only idiots or people who get discount have iPhones
(or rich kids whom live off of mommy and daddy!) you can forward
texts, quite easily. the top lef corner - that thing that looks
like a piece of paper, it's more options. The camera isn't blurry
- just switch autofocus off - and hold the phone still. It isn't
that expensive - My mate is on the same contract with orange and
he has a tocco ultra (bought at same time.) You can see it in a
sunny day (the screen has been treated so not to cause glare and
the touch pad is quite visable. I personally think that a clear
touch pad looks nice... but some people's taste is just weird (Ed
Harris Sony Ericcson phone anyone?) To those who say touch is too
sensitive... LOOK IN THE OPTIoNS!! and all those who say about the
3.5 jack... Well mine is like a walkman phone... You can plug whatever
headphones you want. As for being cheap plastic... It's glass you
rem. The touchpad is glass because it needs to refract light. not
reflect but refract. I have had this phone 1 week. Sure it isn't
the iPhone with expensive apps, stupid legal issues with mp3s and
an expensive contract with O2 (who give you nohing for being their
customer!) but it is however a great phone. The wifi is great -
with good speed and great quality (tested on youtube) and the HSDPA
is also quick (tested on google maps) it's memory is great - many
mp3s and pics. The camera is good but was expecting more. Menu is
good but could use an apple style store selling apps and widgets.
NOW THE MOST iMPORtAnT PART: Phone calls: Excellent - clear, loud
and no hanging up by accident. Video calls: Also great. good quality
and the resolution of the screen is awesome. MMS: Easy to use. SMS:
Touchpad makes texting easier for me - i am not a speed texter but
with T9 I am fast becoming one. Hope this helps anyone - and remember
just because someone on here cn't do something (eg forward txts)
doesn't mean it can't be done - just ask someone at LG or Carphone

went into carphonewarehouse today to ask if they had a release date.
They staff told me they didn't, but they had recieved the dummy
version which apparently means release is imminent. They let me
look at the dummy even though it hasn't been put out, and it looks
incredible. Hopefully the real one will be just as good when I get
one! Rating:

by Mark from England on 24th Jun 2009: Samm, I'm due an upgrade
on O2 through CPW and have been told its available from Friday]
[Editor's comment: It's actually been released a day early, on Thursday
25th June. The Crystla will be exclusive to The Carphone Warehouse
and its subsidiaries. It's free on a £25 contract with £40
cashback.] Rating:
