HTC HD2 Review
Phone rating:
In a nutshell: The HTC HD2 has the biggest screen on any
phone. With an absolutely brilliant touchscreen user interface and
the latest Windows Mobile operating system, this is very powerful
but easy to use device. Features include a superb web browser, GPS
with Google Maps, a media player and an FM radio. It also has a
5 megapixel camera with video calling, although photo quality is
only average. But it's large, heavy, expensive and has poor battery
life, making it rather a niche product and definitely not suitable
for everyone.
Review:
December 2009.
The
HTC HD2 is an upgraded version of the HTC
Touch HD. The HD2 does everything that the HD did, but even
more so. The HD2 isn't a small phone by any means. In fact it's
noticeably bigger and heavier than the iPhone,
although slimmer. In fact, it's a superslim 11mm. It's not going
to fit into everyone's trouser pocket and it's one of the heaviest
phones in the shops. But the reason why it's so large is the screen.
If you thought that the display on the HD was huge (and it was),
then the display on the HD2 is absolutely massive. At 4.3 inches
across, and with an incredible resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, this
is simply the best screen on any mobile phone that we've ever seen.
If you want to watch videos on your phone, get this phone!
The
screen is a capacitative touchscreen, and it's wonderfully sensitive
to the touch. HTC have brought out everything that they can think
of to make the user interface on the HD2 the best ever. Apart from
the size and sensitivity of the screen itself, the HD2 uses an ultra-fast
upgraded processor, so there is no lag at all. The memory has also
been upgraded, so running apps doesn't seem to slow the phone.
Perhaps
the nicest feature is the new HTC Sense user interface, which is
overlaid on top of Windows Mobile Professional 6.5. With HTC Sense,
you can easily customise the home page, giving you one-touch access
to all your favourite apps, such as messaging, calendar, facebook,
etc. HTC Sense is organised around contacts, so you can easily view
a person's emails, texts and other contact info in one place. There
are great features here, such as the full virtual QWERTY keyboard,
the zoom control activated by the touch of your fingers, and the
accelerometer which automatically rotates the screen orientation
when you turn the phone on its side. Under the hood, the Windows
Mobile operating system is powerful and customisable too. The Windows
Marketplace apps are starting to grow in number, and you can find
plenty of useful stuff there.
The
HD2 also has a great music player, benefiting from a 3.5mm stereo
audio jack, so you can plug in your own headphones. With support
for microSD memory cards, you can easily expand the memory to store
thousands of MP3 tracks. It also has an FM radio with RDS. The GPS
receiver with Google maps works brilliantly on such a hi-res screen,
and has a digital compass feature too. The web browser is also superb,
making excellent use of the large screen and touchscreen interface.
HTC have upgraded the 3G connection to use HSPA, so you can download
at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps and upload at 2 Mbps. WiFi is also available,
for ultra-fast data transfers in a WiFi environment. Bluetooth 2.1
and USB connectivity is also supported.
So
far, so good. What we've described is an absolutely brilliant user
interface with an MP3 player, GPS receiver and phone attached. Sure
it's big, but how else could it have such a large screen? The problem
is that HTC have enhanced the strong points of the original Touch
HD, but without addressing any of its weak points. The weak points
of the Touch HD were its large size and weight, its poor camera,
and its weak battery life. The HD2 doesn't fix these problems. In
fact, they have become even more obvious in the HD2. Not only is
the HD2 larger and heavier than the original, but HTC have replaced
the 1350 mAh battery with a weaker 1230 mAh. The results is even
less battery life. The camera is 5 megapixels, the same as the Touch
HD, but it now comes with a dual LED flash. It still can't compete
with other phones in this price range though.
So,
the HD2 has enhanced the strong points of the HD, but failed to
address any of its problems. That makes it in some ways the best
possible phone, and in other ways rather lacking. It's perhaps like
a finely-tuned supercar with no room for luggage and impossible
to park. You have to choose a phone like this with both eyes open,
knowing what it will do and what it won't do. We hope that this
review has given you an understanding of this.
Features
of the HTC HD2 include:
- 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED
flash
- Video recording & video calling (VGA resolution)
with secondary camera
- Display: TFT, 480 x 800 pixels (4.3 inches)
- GPS receiver with digital compass
- Music player (MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA formats)
- FM radio with RDS
- Messaging: SMS, EMS, MMS, Email
- Ringtones: 40 voice polyphonic ringtones / MP3
ringtones
- Wallpaper
- Java games
- Internet: Opera Mobile web browser, GPRS, EDGE,
HSPA (7.2 Mbps download, 2Mbps upload)
- Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 with Enhanced Data
Rate, mini-USB 2.0, Wi-Fi, 3.5 mm audio jack
- Memory: 448 MB RAM plus microSD memory card
(SD 2.0 compatible)
- Vibration alert
- Quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) plus HSPA/WCDMA
(900/2100 MHz)
- Size: 121 x 67 x 11 mm
- Weight: 157g
- Talktime: 320 - 380 minutes
- Battery standby: 390 - 490 hours

I've had this phone for a year and a half now. Like some users, I did
contemplate on selling and replacing it UNTIL I learned about changing
the OS from WM 6.5 to Android MIUI just last week! (A pretty techie
lady named Anthonette did it for me for just $18 - the $2 was a tip
hehe). Saying I'm now ecstatic with it is an understatement. It's like
I now have an ENTIRELY new phone. The interface is sooooo amazingly
beautiful, soooooo smooth and the system soooooo fast that I now can't
imagine myself settling for the "original" HD2 for so long. I haven't
even come to mentioning the coolest apps that I can now install in it.
Don't let go of your HD2, just breathe in a NEW LIFE to it! You won't
regret it!

This is my favourite phone ever. I have used the old clunky Win Mobile
software for years; from PDAs and then onto smartphones. The vanilla
HD2 interface does suck something fierce, but with some rather massive
downloading of ROMs and Icon replacement packs from the very talented
people at XDA developers, I have made this phone into my own personal
super Phone with 32GB of memory . To cover the poor battery life I simply
picked up a couple of extra batteries from a local shop at a reasonable
price. I still use it as my daily driver and whilst I have an iPad 2
& iPod touch I am still not tempted to go to Apple for my next phone.
Unfortunately I love Freda (ebook reading software) so I might have
to go with a WP7 phone which is (at the moment) fundamentally flawed
in the Video transfer and ebook transfer departments and also has woefully
inadequate memory storage. Basically I am stuck with the concept of
replacing this phone with another HD2 :)

I have had my HD2 for over 2 years (since a few weeks after they first
came out) and never a moment's trouble in spite of the very hard life
the phone leads. Upgraded the original WM6.0 to WM6.5 with a ROM from
XDA, now have WM6.5 and Android dual boot. It's my Kindle, iPod, Mobile
Office and phone all rolled into 1. I think that either those with problems
have been given a dud deal by the cell operators or have not taken the
trouble to learn how to use this unbelievable phone. Marion - try ensuring
the (software) slider cover on your phone is working.

this is my second hd2 and still junk. try to get a different phone from
t-mobile but they would no give a different one, I was told that I'd
have to pay 300 for a different phone. anyway there are so many bad

I have had a few windows mobile phones, my last being a HTC touch pro
which I loved with it's 4 row slide out keybaord, making messaging quick
and simple. When I upgraded to the HD2 I was initially disappointed
with the touch screen interface, finding it too easy to make mistakes.
However after a short time I got used to it. The original OS supplied
was buggy, but the latest updated ROM from HTC's website has solved
a lot of that. People who have problems with the OS generally have a
branded phone froma network carrier, and their "modified" version of
the OS can be buggy, notable vodafone. However where this phone comes
into it's own is it's ability to be tweaked. It leaves all other phones
behind. However this is where the phone becomes a "niche" market product,
as a lot of buyers aren't willing to mess too much. Go to xda developers
website and see what people are doing with the HD2. it can run Android,
Ubuntu and has so many "cooked" ROMs that fix a lot of minor issues
it is untrue. Regarding the keyboard response issue I have found SWYPE,
a 3rd party keyboard to be absolutely perfect. IT allows you to just
drag your fingers around the letters quickly spelling out words and
it will invariably come up with the right word. I can message really
quickly with it. In all this is the best phone I have ever owned, but
that's because I did a bit of digging around the internet to find solutions
to the slight niggles.

Fab phone let down by a mediocre OS. HTC does its best to hide it with
sense but when you wanna do anything more complicated than the basics
windows shows its limitations. There's ways round it, can get tweaking
software and fiddle around with the registry and then it'll show its
true potential. Reception and call quality are superb, as is the screen.
But they're just not utilised well enough. Texting is rather fiddly
for instance and options are limited, just do options for picture size
on the camera out of the box. The camera is pretty rubbish with far
too much shutter lag making it useless in low light. Many good applications
also don't support windows mobile, getting them to work is a fiddly
job but possible if you have the time. On a par with iphone 3gs I'd
say for that. I got mine 2nd hand, took it back before try out period
expired. If it gets windows mobile 7 it could be the phone it always
should have been.

Phone works, but is easily the most irritating phone I've ever owned.
After 6 months of ownership, I've given up and gone back to my trusty
Samsung i780, breathed a huge sigh of relief and got a phone that does
what I need again. The main problem I found with the HD2 is the keyboard.
Even with the tweak to make it less sensitive, it is still woefully
innacurate. It takes around 3 times as long to type a text or email
on the HD2 as it does on the i780 (which has a Blackberry-like hard
keyboard), and as a business phone the HD2 just doesn't cut it, for
that reason. I have to type messages on the move often, and on many
occasions I have become so frustrated with the HD2 keyboard the HD2
has almost been thrown! Other bad point is a very flaky Bluetooth implementation
- after connecting to a bluetooth headset, then disconnecting, it refuses
to connect correctly again without a reboot. Latest firmware has not
fixed this. Very frustrating. The good points are the fantastic screen,
and the nice HTC Sense interface. Overall, though, this phone is style
over substance, with too many bugs, and a poorly implemented keyboard
(other touchscreen phones are better). Mine is destined for eBay tomorrow!

resetting is not possible but you have to take the battery out several
times. I keep it in my lunch box just to keep it cool for the next use,
meaning i have to run to open the lunch box to receive calls. I would
not have bought it if i knew it has such drawback. But T mobile will

that their online back-up service would work for this phne - it doesn't.
The phone itself... I have to take out the battery every 2 or 3 days

Although I can use with supplied WIndows MEdia Player, I am unable to

Well its good to write again in this site because i wrote here 5 years
ago a review for the great phone SE K508i. But now im back with another
toy...GREAT TOY, the HTC HD2!!! When this phone was released a web site
from my country sayes : AN ALIEN AMONG TELEPHONES! And that this device
hardly could be named smartphone! I buyed it on the 18 March. I WAS
IN HEAVEN!! It is the greates phone i seen! The screen is BIG and i
have a weakness for the BIG screens. Its a large phone and heavy too
but i don't mind...but its very thin. The web browsing works good on
my phone and i see that some people here wad or have problems with the
web browsing, well the disadvantage is that it freezes(very rare) and
that makes me angry sometime but it freezes very rare i repeat! very
rare. I stayed on the internet browsing over 50 minutes one time and
it was working great! The music player and the quality of the music
IS HIGH! The music sounds very good, clear and loud. The camera on this
phone is good, the video recording is as well good. The touch screen
wich is capacitive is sensible but not as sensible as my ipod touch
but it doesn't matter to me, and the sensors like the G-sensor, the
proximity sensor, the accelerometer sencor and the pick to mute sensor
works GREAT, without any exceptions. Another disadvantage is the battery
that resists only 3 days if you are working hard on it(internet, pictures,
movies,conversations,yahoo messenger,mail,radio,music player,etc) but
in stand-by it resists OK. Well thats my review for this GREAT phone!!!!
I like its very much and im proud every time i have it in my hands :))
I had many smartphones before this one but this one i like more! In
the end i would like to forgive me for my bad english :D

Over all, in a nut shell the HD2 has been the best phone I've had yet,
and that's even in comparison to the bb9700. Due to the fact that the
HD2 came with it's own MicroSD Memory Card, and the capabilities of
the phone over all. The extremely large screen helps a great deal, although
I admit it may not be for everyone. I do admit that it does have a few
bugs that need to be worked out by T-Mobile, but then again T-Mobile
has been lagging behind in Technology for sometime now. But, thanks
to HTC and their wonderful advancements in technology, it makes up for
the lagging behind time of T-Mobile. I do wish that T-Mobile would take
initiative in completion of further advancements in their Studies into
Technology, rather than relying on the Manufacturers of each phone that
they sell. Also, the Techlogy Support Department is way behind on their
studies of each phone that they are supposed to be able to support,
but are unable to do so due to lack of studies. When it comes down to
it, it is up to the individual Tech Support Person to take the intiative
of doing some extensive hands on playing with the HD2, in order to be
able to support it even a little. After all, aren't we paying for support

I begin by reflecting on how far one is up and running with an iPhone
within 15 mins. Now one reviews the HD2. Good news: I did not pay for
it. Lovely screen. This is a masturbatory fantasy for Phonegeeks but
for a fairly intelligent human being with reasonable levels of sophistication
it falls into the PC trap of appearing to be capable of much but delivering
little with ease and access. Screen and OS freeze regularly. Desktop/homescreen
is cluttered. IT replaces at Toshiba TG01. Verdict: phone makers do
not understand the user requirements of a handheld PC whilst PC makers
are unable to make decent phone. HD2 is neither but sells itself as
both. Intriguing contradiction or stylised piece of miss-selling? You

In Thailand and Hong Kong I use DTAC and Smartphone ( Vodafone HK )
the battery life literally doubles ... WHY you ask, well the worst networks
on all of my travels is the UK I mostly spend time in London and they
still have places of no service at street level, in Asia the phones

Got to agree with the previous post. I really wanted to like this phone
but the screen is way too sensitive making it unusable for office apps
and texting. Worst of all it started to make calls by itsself - even
when it was just sitting on my desk. After four weeks of stress I've
given up and gone back to my HTC TyTn2. This is a very costly mistake
and I'll make certain to get a resistive touch screen next time. Avoid!

i got the hd2 as an upgrade with tmobile in feb, with only a 7day exchange
period. im soo annoyed with this phone i could cry. heres why. * Waaaaaayy
too big, dont care if it makes for easier browsing or pics, i need to
use both hands just to operate it. * fuzzy noise in calls * cuts out
* too sensitive in anything but especially annoying whn txing, in any
mode - compact qwerty, full qwerty etc... * cant reply to txs right
away, need to tap the screen about 60 times before curser appears to
tx * battery lasted me at max a day * constant freezes * email doesnt
sync * its constant connected to web even when uv switched it off *
has had a mind of its own, opertaing without touching it so with these
problems i sent it bk for repair. 14 days later, came back. no change,
it got worse, cut out a lot more, and i had a emergency and needed to
call/tx asap, and i couldnt coz of the crappy phone,so sent it back
again..A MONTH LATER came back, and its the worst yet... * nothing saves...pics
taken, calls made/recived or txs..so dnt know if tx have sent.. * still
constant freezes * still makes fuzzy noises * battery life still sucks
i appreciate this is a high tech phone with a huge spec, but its not
use if it doesnt primarily function as a phone for texting and calling.
im much happier using a cheap nokia knowing that when i need to call
or text, i can. iv yet again sent it back, im hoping for a complety
diff phone. i dnt understand these reviews, the phone is either slated
with 1 star or is amazing with 5stars...must have been manufactured
differently...id avoid if u have no patience to wait 5 mins to reply
to a tx.

Easy 5 points, a brilliant phone. If you're slightly nerdy it helps
as its immense power requires a bit of tweaking to make the most of
it. People who appear to be struggling with this phone don't seem to
follow the advice on offer - update to the latest firmware and get brilliant
apps such as Cookie Tabs, which really opens up the interface, and BSBTweaks,
Skyfire, mPlayer, X Task Manager, the PS1 emulator, etc etc. Point is,
if you want open-architecture, and something seriously powerful, go
HD2. It's stunning -- but isn't one for the luddites.

This phone is the best phone ever! The obvious feautres, such as the
size and quality of the screen are just the beginning! The Windows operating
system, gives it fantastic flexibility, and familiarity with the PC
based version, we all love and hate! But with the addition of HTC Sense,
it is even more controlable, more adaptable, than anything else on the
market! Many of my friends have i-Phones, and I personally can't stand
being dictated to, as to what I can store, and how I put it there! I
love grabbing an Avi file, straight from my movie collection, copying
it straight to wherever I want to store it on my HD2, then instantly
playing it back to my i-Friends, who are still waiting for i-tunes to
try and convert the movie to a format the i-phone reconises, usually
After i've finished watching the film! The features and functions work
perfectly, and any apps it doesn't come with can be found somewhere
to , oh yeah, download direct to the phone through any pc(without the
need for i-tunes)install, it and its there, done and dusted for free.I
see some people have had problems, but really this phone is for serious
Smartphone users, you need to have a good tarriff, with a good network,
unlimited text and web usage, which a serious user would have, my only
criticism would be the battery life, but show me a smartphone that doesn't
zap the battery when you sit there playing with it! I have mains chargers,
USB chargers, and a car charger, so it isn't really an issue for me
anyway! This is as good as phones get in todays market, but it's for
serious smartphone users only!

From promising start I loved this phone, my son was born on the 24th
December 2010. I have been sending more than 100 text and MMS and looking
up any information I needed in the delivery room on the Opera browser.
However it did not take me long to realise that this phone has SERIOUS
problems. I wish I had brought an android based phone. List of problems
follow. 1. SMS/MMS - Sent to outbox, are not delevered, tries to resend
a default of 5 times. I am charged 5 times by my operator. I avoid using
MMS and SMS. Service provider Tele2/HTC have not been able to fix. SMS
- FYI Friend has this phone, and resends SMS not to his girlfriend to
but to his boss, that was embarrassing for him. 2. Browser Opera is
constantly locking up, even on the simplest of sites. It just gets worse
and worse. 3. Configuration of basic elements is very difficult to navigate
your way around. 4. I bought the phone to develop on, Active Sync is
required to do this in a meaningful way, you have no idea how fed up
and irrited you can become when this does not work. 5. .Net framework
is compact, so compact that simple programming and database access tasks
become depressingly long winded, with a huge lack of information or
example to code with any significant speed. 6. Camera takes two versions
of each photo and video, despite turning this off after turning it on.
I am just ranting about a small selection of the problems I have encountered,
but this is my experience of this phone and operator. This phone was
supposed to be an asset to my life, it has wasted a huge amount of time
and cannot deliver on it's promises.

I have had this phone for just over a week and I have got to say this
has got to be the best phone I have ever owned! The screen layout is
beautiful, especially with the weather forecast imagery is proper HD
quality, navigating around the various options is very easy, and it
only takes a couple of days of playing around with it to become fully
clued up on the phone. Before getting this phone, I was a little wary
about windows mobiles from all of the general negative reviews, however
this being my first HTC phone and windows version, I have absolutely
nothing negative to say about the windows platform. It works perfectly
well for me. The only slight niggly flaw on this masterpiece is the
battery life which I get a maximum of a day and a half from moderate
use, however going by the size of the screen and the outstanding features
it has, this is very minor and will not reduce my 5 star rating. Another
issue (which is not to do with the phone itself) I have is HTC only
providing a 2Gb memory card with this phone while they are providing
US customers with the same phone with a 16Gb memory card as standard!!
Why ??? Why supply Europe with a miniscule 2Gb memory card for this
phone?? Anyway before I go off the subject, I highly recommend this
phone and suggest playing around with the phone for at least 2/3 days
before leaving feedback. You need that time period to accurately assess
this masterpiece.

honeymoon was soon over after a couple more days. I found myself constantly
having to tap the screen again as it hadnt picked up the first tap.
Web browsing was a nightmare. It was me trying to buy an item on ebay
and pay for it, something I could have done with ease on the iPhone,
that made me send this back to O2 under their 14 days returns. Slow
browsing, lots of checkered patterns when browsing pages, links not
picking up when tapped etc.. Really frustrating. I laugh at people that
say this is an iPhone beater.. No way.. lol Also MS have announced that
there will be no Windows Mobile 7 upgrade for the HTC HD2.. Glad ive
got rid. I will happily use my Nokia 6303 now until June, and see what

I've compared this phone to all its competitors and this is probably
the best phone currently on the market AND better than a lot of the
phones due to be released this year. There are however a few problems
which have been mentioned in these reviews. Before I mention these make
sure to read the whole review to see why this phone gets 5 stars. The
problems: The 1st problem is that the touchscreen can be TOO sensitive;
the 2nd is that the battery life is VERY poor and the 3rd is that it
still runs Windows Mobile 6.5 in the background. Firstly there are tweaks
to reduce screen sensitivity - Google it! To address the battery problem,
a new, more powerful battery is due to be released any day now, and
finally, when Windows Mobile 7 arrives the HD2 will be upgradeable.
With all those problems rectified the HD2 annihilates all other phones,

let me explain, on the plus side the screen is just about perfect, excellent
quality, camera is good and lots of features and apps. On the negative
side, very poor navigation, the SMS screens are terrible laid out, the
touch sense keyboard is hard to use, zooming in and out of web pages
is almost impossible and trying to activate a link on an web page is
almost impossible. There are another couple of facts though, on the
HTC website the Rom has been updated in feb of this year, however as
an O2 customer i can't use this and have to go through O2 - of course
O2 have not got any updates for the Rom, the Rom on my phone was from
Aug 09 - so 6 months out of date, now i'm not saying that that would
have made a difference, but from what i read it makes the phone a lot
easier to use with the updates. I also have very big hands, so maybe
the touch screen was not the best partner for me, worth trying though.
So to sum up for the screen, camera and apps i'd give it 5 stars, but
for the actually day to day use i'd only give it 1 star.

Purchased the HTC HD2 on the O2 network, the first thing that strikes
you is the size of the screen, my mrs has an iphone 3G and when sat
side by side the size and quality of the HTC's screen is by far the
better of the two - I would even go as far as saying that it makes the
iPhone's screen / display look some what dated. The HTC's Sense software
is a joy to use, very simple and it looks fantastic, particularly the
weather updates. The HTC HD2 is however, running Windows mobile 6.5
behind HTC's software and unfortunately this is the phones down fall
for me, for example, when a new e-mail is received, it is displayed
on the e-mail tab using HTC's sense software, which looks brilliant,
then when you tap the screen to open the e-mail, it is opened into windows
mobile's software which is just hopeless. I have also found that the
on screen qwerty keyboard isnt the easiest of things to use, usually
finding that i have made several errors when reading a text back that
I had just typed, it gets annoying having to go back and delete words
and re-type them. I owned an iPhone 3GS prior to the HTC and screen
aside, I have to say that for ease of use, the iPhone is the better
handset, the concept of the HD2 is fantastic, it just desperately needs
an update to the operating system. However, the HTC HD2 is far more
customisable than the iPhone, with things like changing wallpaper etc.
All in all, 4 out of 5 for me.

I think a lot of people who have tried the HD2 haven't spent the time
reading the manual or playing around with the phone. Yes it is a complicated
piece of kit, but lets face it, its like a mini pc. If you want something
simple, go for an Iphone or Nexus One. If you want something that is
very flexible and powerful, shows web pages as if you're on your own
pc, then look no further. The interface is great and the touch screen
is as good as the Iphone. It does everything well, and yes the texting
takes a bit of getting used to,but it works fine. The battery is a bit
poor, but then again you can charge the phone through a micro usb, very
flexible. The phone has its glitches, but all phones do when they 1st
come out, and this is no different. And i'm sure the phone will be brilliant
with win7 mobile, whenever it makes an appearance.

This is an update to my original post on the 24th Jan 2010. I have since
the last review returned my HTC HD2 to the original owner, seemingly
there was an sms or txt message conflict, problem I experienced was
nearly all my txt messages either were'nt being sent or they would go
all at once or maybe never, I did write to HTC and they replied advising
me to return the phone to the original owner for refund other wise I
could try software update, failing this a replacement handset would
be the next step but unfortunately my serial no was allocated to Virgin
and my network is O2, so the rom update still wouldn't be possible for
me to do on the O2 network, I reluctantally decided to return this phone,
for no other reason except it is useless having a device when you don't
know if a txt message has been sent or not, so i'm back using my 5 year
old Nokia 6500 at least my txt messages are sent and I no longer have
to worry if my recipients have received them or not.. I purchased this
phone of a user on E Bay, so my advice is if your deciding on purchasing
an HTC HD2 of e bay would be to check the serial no on HTC HD2 web site
to confirm you can update the rom as this most probabally cured the
problem but I didnt have time as my window for refund on e bay was very
close so i reluctantally returned the HTC HD2 to the original seller..
I give this phone 5 stars, as it's an excellent phone and I will be
buying theor new HTC HD3 when it comes out next year. Thanks

This is a brilliant phone (or is it a tablet?). Having - finally - managed
to secure one, it's impressed from day one. The screen is so easy to
use, the Sense UI is attractive and fluid, the connectivity, functionality,
speed and overall experience are also fantastic. The camera, for what
it's worth, is actually okay, but it's not going to compete with any
Cybershot or N-series cameras. If there is a gripe, it's the back-end
software you sometimes come across in the deeper menus in WinMo 6.5,
which can be visually dull and fiddly (although surprisingly good -
when did you last unzip a file on a phone?). If you have fat fingers,
you may want the new HTC HD2 stylus for this. The upcoming WinMo7 will,
apparently, be a total overhaul and thankfully get rid of the old WinMo
interface once and for all. HD2 owners will apparently get this for
upgrade free. On the apps front, there's a load of good ones, but you
need to go out and find them. There thankfully isn't much in the way
of the trashy gimmick ones either, most are seriously useful add-ons,
including DivX players, Skype, the fiendishly clever Swype, Cyberon
Voice Speed Dial, BsBTweaks, Zooomer and more custom ROMs than you could
ever want. Also, unlike the fruit-named competition, the HD2 is not
locked to iTunes and can even act as a hard drive. You can seriously
customise it and also fully edit/paste/copy/delete all files without
ever linking it to a computer. Oh, and it has Bluetooth. And browsers
that can play Flash. And a great music player. The point is, this phone
is a smart alternative to the near-ubiquitous iPhone, and HTC have achieved
something really clever with the HD2. If you want to avoid the herd
mentality, you'll struggle to find anything to beat this device. As
a PS - update the phone with the hotfixes from HTC's HD2 pages as soon
as you get it. They sort all the issues people have mentioned below,
inc. upgrading the camera's functions.

to the shop and had a better go with this piece of kit and was sold.
Its still a little big compared to dinky 'make do' phone i've got till
this one arrives at my door, but i'll get used to it. Something that
may solve the battery life issue for others (and probably myself since
i'm quite a heavy net user) is the extended life battery just released.
Its got a kickstand built into it that lets the phone be put in portrait
or landscape for viewing which will come in handy for videos, slide
shows and the like. I'll try and post again when i find out how much
one will set me back can't imagine it'll be too much (hopefully)

So many have said about the battery being pants, well mine was rubbish
for some time but after conditioning (charging and using for a month)
beleive it or not it does improve the more you use and charge it, mine
now will go for 2.5 days, which isn't awsome, but lets not forget the
little blighter is powering a mini flat screen tv.

I never write reviews, but I use this site quite a lot nearly all the
time looking at the latest phones and what people have to say about
them so here is my review on the HTC HD2.. I got this phone of EBay
for £370 and have since wrapped an Invisible shield round it. So to
keep it good no scrapes. I love this phone it's absolutely brilliant,
fantastic camera user interface is so simple to navigate, only gripe
I have is it keeps connecting to the internet to downlaod weather data
but I have that feature turned of and still it connects can't seem to
stop it doing this thank god I have free web browsing. I have since
updated the software for the sim card, camera, and txt messages, have
to say didn't notice a difference except for the camera which is much
better, brill pictures. I will warn anyone thinking of buying this phone
of one serious flaw? That is the ''BATTERY''. It is down right pants.
If you take it of charge at say 7am and go to work, say you send 12
txts, make a 60 minute call and faff about on the phone say 13minutes
take a few pics by the time you get home @ 6pm I would imagine you will
be running on fumes with the phone's battery about to die, so if your
a power user forget about this phone my old nokia 6700 would last nearly
2.5 days. But if your near a power point no problems, I did use this
phone one day without doing anything else than make the one call for
like 30mins the rest of the day it was on standby didnt even send one
txt nor did I read any txts that day, even then battery life was down
to %25. I think htc for this size of screen should have made a deeper
profile to accommodate a far bigger and more powerful battery which
could have lasted at least a full day or two. I love this phone even
with it's faults i'm keeping mine maybe in a couple of months or so
maybe a third party battery producer will design a more powerful battery
to facilitate longer phone use. It's a shame because there is no other
phone out there with the features this phone has to offer, i'm giving
the HTC HD2 yes five stars. If you use your phone a lot then look else
where. I dunno what else to say screen is very responsive, and it's
not too big at all I was surprised how comapct this phone is, I didn't
find it bulky at all if anything I loved the screen and screen size
though you won't be sticking this phone down your trouser pocket any
time soon, more like your jacket pocket. I think you should know to
keep your charger handy so you can always keep the phone topped up throughout
the day other than that, your going to be holding a dead phone in your
hands.. This ends my review. Thanks

I have to agree with Lee below. The phone in itself is a lovely piece
of hardware but actually using the thing is a different matter altogether.
The touchscreen is responsive and intuitive but as already stated you
need both hands to hold the unit. Battery life is horrendous and anything
above minimal usage will probably give you less than a day. The screen
is a delight but I can't see it lasting very long down the pub on a
Friday night! The menu system and not knowing if you have closed down
applications were also a minor issue as well. Mine has come and gone,
I suspect on the same 28 day Guarantee as Lee below, I'm now looking
at getting one of the newer Nokia handsets or maybe one of the Blackberry
range, either way it will have a proper hardware keyboard!

I've had the HTC HD2 for only 2 days now, & I have to admit it is without
doubt the worst phone I have EVER owned. You basically need to use both
hands to operate it, which is ridiculous in this day & age, the battery
life is absolutely downright shocking. In 11 hours it went down to 14%
!!! & that was only browsing the internet for about 15 mins max. Texting
is an absolute nightmare !! (& no, I haven't got fat fingers) There
should be an option to get rid of that stupid big ugly clock, calender
etc from the home screen, but alas, there isnt. Thankfully, I got this
phone on contract with a 28 day return policy....its going straight
back to the shop tomorrow. I pity anyone who has forked out £300 to
buy this woeful excuse for a mobile on PAYG.

I have had the HTC HD2 for four days and its going back to the supplier
for a nokia N97 Mini. The camera is not very good at all and takes pictures
that look oink in the middle( even after downloading the patch). The
Video frame rate is only 25 FPS and lags like a cheap phone yet the
HTC HD2 is far from cheap. A must for this phone is some form of protection
and currently the crystal cases HCT do not fit as they need to due to
the back of the phone being curved and the camera lens being very exposed
due to the bulging glass of the lens itself. The HTC HD2 supplied to
me did not come with a large Micro SD card and only came with a 2GB
MSD. The box is rather cheap looking as is the supplied mains charger
that doubles as a USB lead (data lead). The supplied case is useless
and looks like a womans purse and you can not get the phone back out
unless you have thin fingers. The Sim card and Micro SD are under the
metal battery cover so back metal cover needs to be removed if you need
to change your memory card or Sim but be very careful as it is quite
tricky removing the back cover. The rubberised Finnish on the HTC HD2
is not very good at all and after only a few days shows marks and rub
ware from fingers so will not maintain its new look for very long. GOOD
THINGS...large screen and nice graphics. The Windows 6.5 is handy yet
it is smoothed over by Tc's own UI and a standard headphone port but
the micro charging port looks very flimsy and HTC like nokia need to
rethink this and have a stand alone charging port dedicated for charging
only. . Overall a nice phone but not built to last 3 months of normal
use and very bad battery life and only 2GB of supplied memory is not
enough when you think of the price of the phone. HTC HD2,,,,Give it
a miss they are better phones out there for half the price

Coming to the end of my contract now, so have been playing with a few
handsets in store and of friends. Was thinking about joining the crowd
and getting an iphone or a blackberry (no particular reason just nice
gadgets) then on the the off chance got the chance to play with this
in store. Okay so it's bigger than i expected but i'll happily pay the
penalty for that gorgeous screen!! Like for like in store the iphone
got beaten - speed, browsing, screen resolution, multi-tasking (ever
heard of it Apple?), camera, email, exchange support, signal on the
same network (still makes me smile seeing 4 bars on the HD2 and a stuttering
1 on the iphone ha) the list goes on and on. The only time the iphone
wins is on apps marketplace, but so i've been told microsoft's is building
rapidly. Top it all off when WinMo 7 is released it'll be upgraded -
better phone and slicker OS without buying a new handset...no comment
there. From the brief use i've had of it it's left an amazing lasting
impression, if my current contract was up i'd have taken one there and
then. Oh well i know what i'll be buying in the next few weeks. CAN'T
WAIT!!

Hi again, I wrote a review on the 16th of december. Here I am again
to tell how I have got on in the last 3 weeks. First of all, People
have mentioned that the phone camera has a pink shade in the middle
of pictures. I have to say the camera on my phone is superb, I have
taken some fantastic pictures with this phone, It also has a touch focus
meaning you can take real close up shots and just point on the screen
where you want the lense to focus in. The screen is very responsive,
and doesn't crash at all, a friend of mine who has the iphone was scepticle
until he had a play with it and he agrees it is clearer and crisper
than his iphone and as responsive if not better. The screen is changeable
and has a great weather screen saver that updates via gps depending
on where you are. and you can have it update as often as you like. It
is just like owning a pocket pc, with microsoft word, excell office
etc. great for emailing, great responsive quert pad too. Video camera
is as clear and crisp as the camera it self. Only down side for me is
the applications, but then if thats all I was concerned about then I
would have bought an iphone, in the time I have had the phone the apps
are getting updated on a daily basis so I fully expect this to be alot
better over the coming months. The size of the phone for me has not
at all been a problem, and I don't have the biggest hands for a guy.
the colours on the screen and pixel resolution are fantastic, it has
to be seen to be believed just how clear the screen is. When making
calls it is clear and precise and has good volumn adjustment. Internet
browser is quick and responsive, and there is a free app you can download
that means you can flip to wifi at the touch of a button. i have compared
the speed to my mates iphone and there is almost no differance in speed
it mearly seems to depend on the network and coverage areas, as you
would expect. All in all, maybe I am biase as I have one, guys I am
very happy with this phone, and have just heard that windows 6.5 that
it runs on is likely to be upgradable to windows 7 in the future. making
this phone even better, becuase as software improves so does the phone
without having to go out and buy a newer and latest phon, (Unlike iphone
owners)... 5 Stars from me guys. :-)

Had a HD2 for about 2 weeks now so just starting to get to grips with
it. I have an iTouch and if you open the same web site on the two devices
side by side you will see that the HD2 blows the iTouch away. The other
reviewers are right the battery life isn't brilliant but I synch the
HD2 up with my laptop regularly and HD2 charges during this process.
Having a device which supports Outlook for email is great. The only
issues I have encountered so far are as follows: 1) Camera - there is
no red eye reduction on the flash and if you toggle through the flash
modes to the light on mode the lamp is so powerful it hurts your subjects
eyes! 2) The MS Apps Marketplace is a very lonely place - Apple wins
hands down here, but I assume that this will change with time. 3) The
HTC Opera browser doesn't support the BBC iPlayer because you need adobe
flashplayer, but I can't work out how to download and install it. It
opens if you use MS Explorer, but I haven't managed to get anything
to play yet, I assume that this is because the player is missing again.
This is where the iTouch scores again - it runs straight out of the
box using quicktime. 4) I have had one crash in two weeks where I have
had to remove the battery to reboot the system. Overall I would recommend
this phone because the UI is good and it supports Outlook and the rest
of the MS Office automation suite. However, if HTC want to compete with
the iPhone they need to get some of the other stuff sorted out.

Taking this phone on it's own merits it is supurb. The build quality
is second to none, the screen is excellent and as sensitive as the Iphone
and the Sense Interface has been implemented brilliantly. However it
is still sitting on the Windows Mobile platform, and however much it
is covered up it still lurks in the background. I would say for people
that understand what the phone and OS is capable of and not afraid to
get their hands dirty the phone cannot be beaten. Try watching a film
on the Iphone after viewing one on the HD2, no contest. However if you
want a simple and elegant phone that does what it says and does it well
I would opt for the Iphone. For me the HD2 wins hands down.

..ok i finally managed to get this phone and have had it for 3 days
and its the best phone i have had. I personally think it better than
the iphone. The screen is massive and the response it very good. Texting
is good and nothing wrong with typing. If you have fat fingers, dont
blame the phone..blame yourself. Yhe battery life is ok but i seem to
have to charge it everyday and a half because i use the internet alot.
The camera is quality and the internet is very good. The overall interface
is excellent and neat and the weather animation tops it!! The only thing
the iphone has over the HTC HD2 is the apps and storage memory but you
can buy the storage card. I had 4 friends look at my phone (they all
have iphone) and i knew straight away they were impressed. Nothing more

had a nokia 5800 and obviously this knocks its spots off, it should
it is more money. I can't offer an in depth review yet, other than the
spec on this phone is far better than the i phone, the camera is better
despite what mobile phone reviews say, several friends of mine have
the i phone 3gs and so far I believe this will be much better. Also
don't forget to get an i phone on the same type of contract will cost
you £10- £15 per month more. WHY? I will write a more in depth review

I've had the phone for a few days now and I love the slick interface
and eye candy graphics. However, the camera is poor for a 5 mega pixel.
Even disregarding the faint pick circle in the middle of every picture
(which hopefully should be corrected with a firmware update) the rest
of the image is disappointing once transferred to my PC. The colours
are not quite right and the edges of objects are over sharpened. I wished
I had paid more attention to some of the sample photographs available
on the web and realised that HTC have no track record of decent cameras
on any of their models. In fact the HD2 has been designed in such a
way that it rests on its camera lens which should have been a bit of
a giveaway. I know it's a smart phone and not a camera phone but the
Samsung Omnia II is in the same category but has the benefit of a decent
5 mega pixel camera.
