In a nutshell: If email on the go is your top priority,
and you don't like the size and weight of the big BlackBerries,
then the 8100 could be a good choice. However, the 8100 lags behind
other smartphones when it comes to most features, and it isn't the
easiest phone to use either.
Review:
September 2008.
You might think that BlackBerry's mission statement
for the 8100 Pearl series sets up expectations that are impossible
to meet: "BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Series smartphones are designed
to help you do everything you want with your life." As
the baby in the BlackBerry range, the 8100 Pearl is a much more
compact device than the 8300 or
8800 series phones. In fact, with
a weight of just 89g, the 8100 is very light compared with other
smartphones. But it still offers nearly all of the functionality
of the big Blackberries. BlackBerry have achieved this by the Pearl's
distinctive SureType® keypad, which is a compromise between
a full QWERTY keypad and a conventional numeric keypad. The SureType
keypad can be used to enter text more rapidly than a conventional
phone keypad, and the trackball is used to navigate around the screen
and select options.
Now, the BlackBerry may look like a normal mobile
phone, and BlackBerry's marketing guys are clearly trying to present
it as such, but really it's a much more sophisticated type of device.
At its heart it's more like a mini laptop, equipped for emailing,
messaging, browsing and organising. It's a corporate kind of device
that has more in common with the enterprise IT function than with
consumer mobile phones.
The key feature that sets the BlackBerry apart
is its ability to manage email on the move. That's why most people
choose to buy a BlackBerry, and that's why it needs a special keypad.
And the BlackBerry 8100 has all the wireless email features of the
bigger 8300 and 8800 series devices. It supports up to 10 different
email accounts. It's a push-email device, which means that each
mailbox is automatically updated whenever you send, delete, file
or read messages. Messages are delivered automatically to the phone
and you can be notified as soon as they arrive. The BlackBerry email
management system is outstandingly good, and lets you work your
email just as easily as if you were behind a laptop. You can view
attachments too. The BlackBerry supports all kinds of email, including
web-based mail such as AOL Mail, Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail.
You can set up your business email account to work with your BlackBerry
using the BlackBerry Internet Service, or enterprise customers can
set it up using a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Of course, the SureType
keypad also makes the BlackBerry an excellent choice if you prefer
to send text messages rather than email.
Email and MMS is what you buy a Blackberry for,
but it can do other things to, even if "helping you do everything
you want with your life" is hyping it rather too much. As a
SmartPhone, the 8100 has a wealth of applications available, that
let you do all kinds of things on the go, such as managing your
calendar and address book, browsing the web, social networking,
and even running a range of enterprise applications. And because
the BlackBerry synchs well with other devices, you can use it as
the glue to bind your desktop with your laptop and your business
with your personal life.
The 8100 makes phone calls too (we nearly forgot
to mention that!) and is equipped with a digital camera and music
player. The camera is only 1.3 megapixels and doesn't record video,
but it's fine for quick snaps. The phone also has a full range of
features that mobile users expect, including voice-activated dialling,
a speakerphone, Bluetooth connectivity and an expandable memory.
Bonus features include BlackBerry® Maps and user-selectable fonts.
The phone also incorporates password protection and a keypad lock.
The BlackBerry 8100 provides quadband support,
allowing for international roaming between North America, Europe
and Asia Pacific.
The battery life of the 8100 isn't quite as high
as the larger 8300, but is perfectly respectable.
The 8100 is the most compact BlackBerry, and inevitably
some compromises have been made in fitting the technology into such
a small package. The keypad isn't a full QWERTY layout, and the
screen is a lower resolution than the bigger BlackBerries, which
makes web browsing less satisfying. Menus can be counter intuitive
and generally speaking this isn't an easy phone to use. The camera
is also of poor quality, although this probably isn't such a big
factor for most users. If email on the go is your top priority and
you don't want the bulk of the bigger 8300, then the 8100 is probably
the next best thing. The 8100 can't compare with smartphones from
Nokia when it comes to multimedia, so choose it for its push email
and keypad, and be aware of its limitations.
Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.0, USB, modem, stereo
headset port

I love my Blackberry 8100 took me a few hours to master but now
i can navigate round it no problem. Yes it does lack Mp3 function
and yes it does lack Video recording and yes it lack Wifi lan function
too. But lets look at it this way A) How many mobile phones are
there that take good video recordings anyway. B) if you have wifi
in the area you may as well use your Laptop or pc C) the only handset
i know of that has a good Mp3 player is the nokia 5130 express which
is not good at anything else and falls apart. As a work phone it
does the job just fine. Its the Vw golf of the mobile world. Would
recommend to any one looking and will definately be buying another

The 8100 is a fantastic phone. Fat fingers may find the keypad a
bit tricky though, be warned. It's very simple to set up (despite
previous ill-spelled reviews to the contrary), in fact, it's hard
to get it wrong if you've got the motor neurone control of an average
adult human. Email organisation is typically brilliant and the browser
is good (yes, the screen is smaller than the 8300 but it's big enough).
Battery time is also quite impressive. Rating:

June '08, personally I found it very difficult to get used to at

would automatically freeze, use to be on the phone constantly to
my network provider. Camera is not for professional use at all.
If you like your music, not the phone to have as do not allow many
downloads. Battery life I think can be improved as I find that I
have to walk with the usb to charge to laptop for backup (but depends

You just got to love this phone, as said before it's pretty useless
if your calling plan doesn't support mail & internet. To leddy:
yes, if you don't lock the phone in your pocket it WILL call people
(like all other phones to be correct). Great thing about this phone
is the exchange sync, which is (due to being pushed) imidiate. Want
to call someone? Enter their business card in your outlook and it's
instantly available on your BB. Furthermore it's much more compact
than most of it's competition, and if you had a keypad you never
want to go back to typing mails with a stylus (or worse, on a touchscreen

difficult to push keys resulting in some crazy text messages. The
camera is terrible and image quality very poor. The software is
extremely slow no matter if you are looking for a contact in the
address book or trying to read a txt its very very slow to respond.
Sometimes my phone randomly texts people and makes calls itself,
which I believe is down to the terrible rollerball which gets stuck
and just starts selecting options and sending texts. Sometimes I
get missed calls that are never reported and when the phone memory
is full the only way to resolve this is to pull out the battery
and cold restart the phone. This phone is a dud and should be avoided

until we wanted to Bluetooth a ring tone from another phone to hers.
It kept saying on the other phone 'Sending failed'. Just contacted
Vodafone and they have told me that the Bluetooth will NOT receive
incoming messaging. It is only one way Bluetooth so in other words
you can send but not receive data. You can only get ring tones through
the data lead and a PC so what’s the point in having Bluetooth.
Now seems we are stuck with a phone that doesn't do what the phone

setup I found very accessible and once mastered, quicker and more
reliable than any other phones I've used - but nonstandard, so I
guess some won't like this. The menus are also easy to use once
you're familiar. Easy to tie up to a laptop - including a Mac- though
I sync mine automatically over the network, so it's not a necessity.
Negatives - (i) the central trackball can get sticky over time,

Not worth the price tag. I bought this phone because I text a lot,
but the SureType doesn't let you write any faster than regular predictive

me, but that wasn't the phone's fault. In this day and age cheaper
and lesser phones are taking sharper pics (the Pearl's are grainy!)
and have video cam capabilities (the Pearl does NOT have them).
Also, like other users here I am having the freezing problems, the
hourglass will come on a blank screen and stay there forever, then
the phone will shut off. The battery life is not great; after two
days I'm at 25% whereas with phones I have had in the past I can
go 3-4 days without charging. Also -- NOT DURABLE. I drop my phone
a lot -- bit clumsy -- but while other phones have been able to
withstand it this phone either shatters into three pieces or the
SIM card comes loose and I have to take it apart to set it right
again. All in all, I was glad I spilled juice on it yesterday to
give me an excuse to buy a new phone (because yes -- spilling a
bit of juice on the outside of it has made it completely malfunction.
I can't make calls or send messages anymore, none of the buttons
work. I dropped my damn RAZR in the toilet and it still worked.) Rating:

emails are easy, searcing for info is easy- EVERYTHING IS EASY!!!
The camera is fine for a phone, and it is easy to email pictures
to a pc. The BlueTooth function is a little guarded, to protect
the phone but can be adapted. All in all, a great phone. I have
had mine for over 18 months and dont want to change it. Rating:

I have used the blackberry pearl 8100 for the past six months and
its beginning to give me problems. Its freezing and i cant call
nor text anyone. an hour glass icon keeps on rotating and when i
touch the wheel it goes blank with the red light flushing. I have
tried every suggestion given like holding ALt + Cap + Del but its
not helping either. I am so disssapointed considering that the phone
cannot record videos and voices. very poor in receiving blue tooth
from other people. Its really a dissapointment in this day and age.
keeps on sending blank sms to people. Rating:

Stephen Robinson criticises others for not being able to spell,
yet he can neither punctuate, nor differentiate between the different
forms of the word(s) "to" and "too". Regardless, this is an excellent
phone, if a little inconvenient to navigate from time to time. Rating:

DON'T BUY THIS FROM BT OR YOU WILL BE STUCK WITH A DEVICE WHICH
DOES NOT WORK. I ordered 2 of these from BT. They arrived with stuck
SIM card holders. On removing one of the SIM holders, it broke off.
I have a 2 year contract with BT and a phone that broke on Day one
of my service. I complained to BT who tell me I have to buy a new
device at a cost of £183. I have been sold a device which does not
and never has worked, and I am expected to pay for a 2 year service
on it. BT is renowned for poor service, but this is as bad as I've
heard. Don't consider buying this device, Rating:

Versatile but unreliable. 3 phones in 8 months. The first was a
complete systems failure loosing all data and when handed back ,
9 units had already been returned from other colleagues. The second
unit was a gradual failure of speaker circuits. Rollers sometimes
shut system off, also when answering call it turned off phones.
Keyboard too small. Battery life short with minimum running. One
star is too good Rating:

As for the features, the default mp3 player is useless. It only
plays one song at a time. Overall it does not warrant the high price
it demands because it lacks the features of other phones. Rating:
