iPhone Review
Phone
rating:
In a nutshell: The stunning touchscreen user-interface
of the iPhone is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Combining
a phone, music player, camera and web browser, the iPhone is a stunning
device. However its high cost and many limitations mean that it
is a flawed beauty.
Ah! The iPhone. Never in seven years of reviewing
mobile phones have we encountered a phone that has been so controversial.
We've even been personally abused by reviewers who disagreed with
our opinions. This review is an attempt to find balance between
the conflicting opinions (something we always strive for at Mobile
Phones UK, but which has been hard to achieve with the iPhone).
Regular
readers of Mobile Phones UK will know that we wrote an article back
in June 2007 which cast doubt on whether the iPhone would live up
to the hype. We hadn't seen the iPhone at that time, but when it
finally arrived here in the UK, we were blown away by the user interface
and gave it a 5 star review (although we did point out its numerous
limitations). With hindsight, 5 stars was
wrong, and having taken on board all of the feedback from users,
we've arrived at a 3 star rating.
The thing is that the iPhone is in some ways so
good, and in other ways so bad. Let's be generous and start with
the good.
The
iPhone is the first of a new generation of phones: it's a touchscreen
smartphone running Apple's OS X operating system. Instead of using
buttons, joysticks, etc, the iPhone has icons that appear on the
huge touch-sensitive screen. The screen is enormous, and the user
interface is simply breathtaking. Apple claim that the iPhone is
five years ahead of the competition, and playing with the user interface
you can begin to believe the hype. Touch the Phone icon on the screen
and the address book appears; tap on a name and the iPhone makes
a call. Touch the Photos icon and your photo album glides onto the
screen. The responsiveness of the user interface and the wealth
of effects makes using the phone an absolute joy. SmartPhones have
a reputation for being slow, bug-ridden and difficult to use, but
the iPhone is the absolute opposite. Using the iPhone is simply
an amazing experience, and once you've owned an iPhone it's hard
to imagine ever going back to a normal phone. Take a look at the
video demos on the iPhone
website to see for yourself.
The
iPhone is an iPod too of course. It plays music and with a built-in
8 Gbyte of flash memory, you can throw away your iPod. The iPhone
plays music and video (on that stunningly big screen) and can download
songs from iTunes on the move. 8 Gbytes is enough to store 2,000
songs.
Other
great features include the Safari web browser (which provides one
of the best implementations of the mobile web that we've come across),
Google Maps (which is fabulous on the iPhone) and built-in Wi-Fi
support.
That's
where the good stops and the bad starts. First the price. The iPhone
is exclusive to O2 and will cost £269 to buy on a £35
per month 18-month contract. It's locked to O2 and will continue
to be locked even when the 18 month contract ends. This makes it
far more expensive than any other phone in the mainstream market.
Some
of the technology under the hood is more like "five years out
of date" than "five years ahead of the competition".
For example, the camera is just 2 megapixels, lacks autofocus and
has no flash. It's just a toy camera compared to the Nokia
N95, Samsung G600 or Sony
Ericsson K850i. These three phones are currently in the top
5 sellers in the UK and all have 5 megapixel cameras with flash
and autofocus. Apple seriously misjudged the public's desire for
quality cameras in their phones.
The
connectivity of the iPhone is also seriously lacking (hey, it's
an Apple, we shouldn't be surprised by this!) The most obvious omission
is the lack of 3G. It's the only current smartphone that lacks 3G.
For a phone that places so much emphasis on its music downloading
and web browsing capabilities, the fact that you can only download
at 2G speeds is a major limitation. It's like a Ferrari with a top
speed electronically limited to 30 mph! If you're in an EDGE-enabled
part of the O2 network or a wi-fi hotspot, then you can access higher
data speeds, but still nothing like 3G. It's such a shame, because
the web browsing capability of the iPhone is the best we've ever
seen on a mobile. It seems that the iPhone was designed primarily
for the US market where 3G is largely unavailable and where the
choice of handsets is smaller. The Bluetooth support is also seriously
limited, with no filesharing and no
support for stereo Bluetooth headsets.
The
battery life of the iPod is another issue. The iPod has a huge LCD
display that eats power and with so many gadgets to play with, the
battery is going to be used up fairly quickly. But even heavy users
should get a full day's use between charges, so it's not the end
of the world. Other problems include the omission of MMS, and the
fact that you can only assign MP3 tracks to ringtones if they were
downloaded from iTunes.
So,
what to conclude about the iPhone? It's clearly not a phone for
everyone. It's very expensive, so we should compare it with the
best of the competition. What has the iPhone got that the others
haven't? The answer is the user interface: a huge touchscreen display,
with a user interface that really is a modern wonder. It's also
a fine media player, but then so are its competitors. If you've
got the cash and you love the look, then the iPhone could be your
phone, but for the rest of us on a budget, you'd be advised to forget
the charms of the iPhone and buy a cheaper alternative that does
so much more. Alternatives include the LG
KU990 Viewty,
the Nokia N95, the Nokia
N81, and the Sony Ericsson
W960i.

I wonder why British people hate iPhone? Just because it’s
from Apple? No, I love iPhone, because it delivers excellent features!!!
So please consider both the brilliant features and lacking features
when giving a review! I have experienced iPhone for a month. I always
read reviews from this site, I haven’t seen this site been
biased at any time, but some people have complained the administrator.
I have summarized some advanced features of iPhone; 1)Touch screen:
most sensitive, the one and only multi-touch phone so far produced
and user interface is as simple as it can be. 2)Configuration: 128MB
RAM, 8GB Hard, 400 MHz CPU frequency, 16 million colour display,
3.5” LCD wide screen (480X320), and operating system OS X
makes iPhone fast, fun (simply amazing) and enough for anything
to run in a phone 3)Brilliant Key board: it’s not just a key
board when you need; it’s the key board that you need (different
key boards for different situation). Initial letter is automatically
Capitalized if you type a name, abbreviations are in capital letters,
spelling is always correct: by mistake if you typed “yii”
it will be changed to “you” when you press the space
key. Many more… 4)Internet: it’s better than your computer.
Double click to zoom, Safari zooms anything to best fit, it’s
amazing, Safari knows tables, column, pictures, text fields etc…
5)iPod: cover flow, wide screen for video, start from where you
stopped (touch a video icon, each video starts from where you stopped
earlier, “Play now” to start music from where you stopped)
6)Supports: Send and receive emails with attachments, Google maps,
YouTube, PDF, addition fonts, IM Chat program, games, Wi-Fi, EDGE,
Bluetooth 7)Installer: there is a program called “installer”
for iPhone, everyone will love the iPhone when you get the installer.
Open the installer, you will see hundreds of FREE programs for iPhone
in category view (3rd party programs too), install what ever you
like and when ever you want. 8)Customize: arrange and/or hide icon,
change theme customize system messages like “UNLOCK”
instead of “slide to unlock” – just do anything
(everyday the phone looks NEW). Install an iPhone browser or an
iPhone viewer to your PC (FREE) so that you can customize iPhone
ringtones, its not a must that you have to buy ringtone from apple,
you can make it using these programs and save/view PDF files/Word
documents on your iPhone and install fonts. Default is set to preview
SMS on screen even phone is locked, many people hate this. Switch
Off/On SMS preview is available. All Nokia phones have security
features Phone lock code, pass-code lock or key board lock with
security code as in iPhone, but not in all 5 stars smart phones!
Same like iPhone not a single Nokia phone is ranked with 5 stars,
but many Sonyericsson phones without security feature are ranked
just because of camera or what... Oh! The interest of UK people
is different! But I have not seen people taking pictures with highest
pixels of their camera, because either they can’t zoom in
or phone is slow/can’t preview them, or 2MP is enough (you
can print to as large as A4 size images with 2MP). So what’s
the use of 3.2MP or 5MP cameras without optical zoom or other great
features? I meant Megapixels is not everything!!! iPhone is behind
all the other smart phones in many ways! 1)SMS: You have to type
the message every time you need to send, you cant resend, Forward,
Send to All, send to a Group, save in Draft, SMS texts from note
book or copy paste anything, these features are there nearly in
all smart phones. 2)File transfer: the only way is emailing; no
Bluetooth, no infra, no MMS, you can’t even use memory cards
to transfer files. 3)Camera: very poor camera, just 2MP, nothing
else, can’t zoom 4)No 3G, “mark” or “select”
feature is not available, can’t delete or email selected files,
do it one by one… I appreciate the incredible features of
iPhone and hope they will do a much better job next time! "Buyers
should buy the phone only if they like the phone, we have enough
choice I hope!"

very bad phone overpriced and lacks many basic features (video recording,
ability to send files over bluetooth, removable battery) it seems
to follow the same path as all previous apple products; looks good,
heavily priced, will usually break after a year- when the warranty
is over. you are better off buying a classic ipod and a solid phone
like a sony ericsson. so you get the best of both worlds, rather
than a lame attempt to blend the 2 together.

This has to be one of the best looking Phones ever. I played with
one with the view to purchasing. I was disappointed with what I
saw. The display gets dirty too quickly, the on-screen keypad is
unusable for people with larger fingers, the automatic screen orientation
is slowww, you can't send MMS, there's no 3G. On the positive side
the media player is brilliant, the screen gestures are second to
none but take practice to perfect. This is not a cellphone! It's
an iPod with a phone module it doesn't do phoning very well- the
signal strength is poor, the call quality is poor. What completely
turned me off was that it's only available on one Network in the
UK, you can't change the battery and can't even remove the SIM card!
It costs £269 cash and you're tied into a 18 month contract for
a minimum of £35 p/m. If you like the design so much buy the iPod
touch then get a proper phone, most Nokias/Ericssons beat this joke
with ease. DONT BUY INTO THIS CON. Incidentally, I'm disappointed
by the positive misleading reviews given by some websites and TV/magazines.
I get the feeling Apple have bought the reviewers too. Before you
get any phone check it out yourself, we've all been using mobiles
for a long time now and you don't need to be technical to see a
CON!

I have followed the Iphone noise since apple started the drum, but
the more i know, the less motivated i am to join the dance. As a
phone geek, & an IT person, the beautiful iphone is like being asked
to run latest operating systems on an 80's processor. As for the
camera, its unbelievable to accept at 2mp. Even if i live the US,
i will still not go for it. I use the Nokia N95 since its release,
(O2), it is the in-thing as it is purely a palmtop computer especially
with its latest addition of exchange server availability which the
Iphone might not think of.

I see some of the criticisms are justified. The battery thing is
a pain, the internet is slow but it is not that bad, I really like
the texting once I got used to it - much better than normal. Sure
it would be good to be able to use your songs as ring tones but
it is not vital. On the whole I like it. Think it is over-priced
at £269, and I do not like the fact that that it cannot be unlocked
after 18 months. >:( Otherwise great phone - superbly intuitive

the SICK PRICED phone (2G for £100's ROTFPMP!!) As usual with the
rest of their ridiculously overpriced products Apple are taking
advantage of the people who are led by style over substance and
have little, if any technical knowledge - i mean who on earth with
decent tech awareness after reading the phone's specs would expect
to get a practicle usable phone that matches anywhere near its £100's
price tag(+ on top of that RESTRICTIVE RIP OFF contract) that only
has eg 2G , NO MMS,restrictive 2M camera,SIZE of a BREEZE BLOCK

prevent you from swapping ringtones with mates so you have to give
ITUNES/APPLE EVEN MORE MONEY). Its not the rubbishness of the product
that the worst thing about this but the PERVERTED PRICE, it is just
sick - however this is the Apple norm and anyone with enough technical
knowledge can see through their charade just like its possible to
buy/make the right PCs that work AT LEAST as efficiently and smoothly
as Macs BUT at an infinitely lower not only starting but long term
maintenace price too(in comparison to what tech savvy PC owners
pay, Apple charges the earth for new parts(exclusive to only them
so no fair market competition like windows comps) and fixing hardware
- its where they rip off their customers the most) PC also have
greater flexibility and adaption to individual preferences, tastes
and interests through infinitely greater variety/more reasonabley
priced or even FREE SOFTWARE!(eg MACS are the WORST COMPUTERS if
you decide to become a GAMER!!) Hopefully people will be able to
learn from their bad experiences here and see that even if they
are only after looks there are ALWAYS much more reasonable alternative

the initial 24 months contract BUT according to O2 they will not
do that here - see attached eMail: (...) Thanks for emailing us
to find out if we can unlock your iPhone. You can continue your
contract after completing 18 months of contract. We won't be able
to unlock the iPhone to use on another mobile network, as it's available
to use exclusively on the O2 network. This means you won't be able
to use the iPhone in Germany, as we won't be able to take off the

the remaining number of months (of your contract) multiplied by
your monthly service charge (line rental). You'll be able to view
this charge on your final bill. We'll request the payment for your

I've already had a crack at this once but I'm having a go again
because I'm starting to get annoyed. I've been watching the unfolding
grumbles and complaints and I'm left wondering how much longer will
the iPhone hype blind 'official' reviewers who give it a rating
of "Excellence". Look, by now it's pretty clear that even the enthusiasts
who got up early to stand in the queues and to buy one (see P.I.Sstaker
below) are starting to realise they were conned. As one of the unofficial
reviewers so eloquently said, "Owning an iphone is like dating a
beautiful woman with no brains." Exciting at first but the novelty
soon wears off. One of your rival review sites currently has the
iphone listed at 9.7 out of 10. What?! To quote John MacEnroe, "Can
he be serious?" I like Apple Macs and the design of the new iphone
is seductive. But if technical reviewers are going to have a meaningful
relationship with their readers they have to be honest don't they?
The truth is that in several important areas the iphone just doesn't
measure up. If not, why not say so? OK it is a thing of beauty -
that's good, agreed. But if it doesn't have a worthwhile camera,
battery life, MMS, 3G, and it is overpriced and restricted to a
single network - why is it carrying a four and five star rating?
Apple's marketing campaign is very convincing. For years they have
produced - (And I have bought) - computer products that in my view
are ahead of the PC competition. (In fact I am writing this on a
Powerbook). But the iphone is currently not up to scratch and the
buying public should be told. The reviews by people who've bought
the iphone below speak for themselves. So can I suggest the official
reviewers find the courage to send Apple a message - and that is
- "Nice looking phone, but get it right!" Perhaps if Apple listen
to the criticism and do something about it they might yet salvage
what in my view is a reputation tarnished by the fundamentally flawed
"iphoney".

I had a look at the apple iPhone when I was in california (USA)
and i must say that it is a beautiful unique mobile phone. A mobile
phone which is very reliable and can last you forever. It holds
the best features that a mobile can have. Examples include the safari
web browser - and you can zoom in and out with a touch of a finger.
The best feature I like is the youtube add-in which is well cool
as you can watch videos on the go. There are some down sides though.
Firstly, it is very expensive. You would have to pay a minimum of
£269.00 for the iPhone itself and now its on the 02 network you
have to pay £35.00 as a minimum per month so it's going to leave
your wallet empty unless you are loaded lol. The main question:
Is it worth your money? In my opinion it's not because you are spending
the money which could buy yourself a nice 15 inch laptop computer.
So if you want a mobile which looks like an apple iphone, works
similar to the iphone, does'nt cost as much and will make you stand
out of the crowd well here is the answer - the LG PRADA mobile.
Absolutely georgeous! You don't need anything better. But, if you
have a different opinion about the iPhone - sure that's fine! I
tell ya what, go and have a look it at your nearest apple store!

iPhone is not just a Phone, not just an iPod and also not just an
internet device, but is for everything that is useful for ones life.
(I have the iPhone version 1.1.1) Everyone believes that nothing
is perfect, so is true. In this aspect iPhone also isnt perfect.
iPhone does not allow to send music files and other files to another
device as we do on other phones using bluetooth. The there is presence
of Bluetooth also but only function is to connect to Headsets. By
this coonection it doesnt allow for music streaming. Very inperfect.
Thanks for the built in 8GB memory as usual out there like (N95
8GG, N82 8GB, N91 8GB) but does not support for master storage.
(MAY BE FOR PROTECTION AGAINST VIRUSES). The biggest problem i faced
in iPhone was the lack of 'Forward, resend, multiple users' in SMS
feauture. This is very inconvienient for a person like me who is
a heavy SMS user. Hope an update will fix the problem. The most
interest thing about iPhone and why it has become a rock star is
that as apple says 'Touching is beleiving'. Sure this is correct.
there is no other Phone out there who can be as smart as iPhone.
This is how a phone should be and what the technology has become
for. Google maps works great. touch with a finger twice to zoom
in and touch with two fingers to zoom out. Same thig can be done
in internet also. Is there any phone who can manage and view photos
like iPhone can? Absolutely not. 'Pinch' to zoom in and double click
to zoom out. Flick with a finger for next image. Video works great
on iPhone. Just sync videos and watch it as u do on a sinema or
at home. Wonderful. Next is the mail. can any phone do it like iPhone.
really not. No set up required except the typing of username and
password. view mail attachments at a glace. Thanks for the built
in Wifi for fast connectivity. Next is about Keybord. Isnt this
really surprised? keybord is there if you need it. and hides when
you dont. also it changes to the requirement. For example when you
type an address, there is the '.com' button. when you type an email
address there is '@' on the place you want. The question is can
any phone beat iPhone? Really not before end of the sale of iPhone.
Can you imagine a phone who can do this, who can do that, or anything
in a single one. If you the iPhone is here. Buy it and meet the
show. Only for $399. A perfect fit for anyone. one of the seventh

Today I sent it back!! I read all the issues and thought that I
had to have one, no matter what!! DAY 1 - Fully charge I used it
with vigour trying everything I could ....battery lasted 10+ hours
or so. DAY 2 - Just found out there is NO MMS.... DAY 3 –
Can’t take photos in the dark or even in poor light –
NO flash or ZOOM DAY 2-6 - In the car using wireless my battery
was dreadful 3.5 hours talk time at best. OTHER ISSUES You can replace
the battery with a spare because it is built in....stupid WHAT I
LIKE IT looks smart. CONCLUSION LOOKS are not everything, it has
a low spec and missing some essentials, it’s all hype. I would
wait for the V2.0 iphone.

Bought the iPhone on launch day and can say it has fulfilled my
expectations. The camera is fine. I never used the camera much on
my old D900. No video camera = no more abscure drunken videos that
I can't hear or make out what is going on! No MMS can't say I have
sent a picture message since the novelty wore of a few years ago.
Browser is really good, bit slow but its a phone not a laptop..
3G coverage is a bit patchy in my area so would not notice even
if it had the capability. The lack of file sharing was obviously
going to happen as its based on a ipod. As far as I am aware you
can't copy someone elses ipod's library into your itunes without
a work around. Tend to keep my phone on silent and vibrate most
of the time so not really finding ringtones a issue. User interface
is great. Texting speed is the same now I have grown used to its
"predictive" text. Video playback is awesome. 8GB is plenty for
me as I don't see the sense of carrying any more music/film/shows
around as I would use my laptop or portable Hard disk if that was
the case. If you accept its a iPod touch with a phone you won't
be disappointed. Just think where your expecation level is before
buying this phone! For me it is everything I was hoping for.

I've heard from a lot of people asking me about the iPhone, being
something of a techno-nut (yes, I can admit it to myself!) I've
been fortunate enough to trial one of these, and I have to say,
for the European market, this phone just doesn't measure up. Cheaper,
easier to obtain phones are available free of charge on many contracts
with multiple network providers, meaning the iPhone limits user's
choice. Secondly, the software update available for the American
market iPhone means that if the phone is network unlocked by the
user, the phone function gets disabled. In the UK, this practice
is illegal, which could pose trouble for Apple. Although the iPod
function is excellent, that's pretty much all this device is. A
nice toy, but that's all. For an iPod, stick to the iPod, and don't
settle for a second generation phone in a 3rd generation market.
Go for the N95 8GB or Sony Ericsson W910i instead. Quite simply,
they are better made, more easily available, and higher quality
of features. Sorry Apple, better luck next time!

ok now i don hav a iphone or a gd phone bt im getin one now think
about it the iphone is an overcomposating ipod, if anything is an
ipod nano, because you can only get 8gb at most from the phone which
is pathetic. another thing for something that is meant to revolutanise
the market; a 2megapixel camera without video capabilities, are
you serious. furthermore you can only get it on o2 for 269 pound,
and you have to pay 30 a month that is just stupid. another thing,
many of the new high end phones are coming with HSDPA (3.5g) and
iphone has 2g, for an interent device that is disturbingly stupid.
and bluetooth, you cant send filesm and it doesnt had EDR or A2DP
so you cant use stereo bluetooth headset and you cant use normal
headphones either (3.5mm) pure stupidity. and i acknowledge it pribably
has the best use interface out there and the biggest screen, but
that is nothing more than aesthetics, and your phone is not going
to work on how it looks is it. also people that are getting so happy
about the pinching/zooming touch screen: this was made 20 years
ago, just research it. final conclusion over priced, over compasating,
big screen case with apple logo and nice user interface. for about
half the price you would pay a year on this phone you could get
something good e.g n95, n95 8gb, these both have HSDPA and Wi-fi
and even GPS, and 8gb version costs 400 pound but it has the same
memory and yes the screen is 2.8 inches bu t aint that enough, plus
theres is aa 5 megapixel camera. other phone to consider a k850i,
HSDPA and 5mp camera, lg viewty (ku990), 5mp camera, HSDPA 3 inch
screen, g800 which has OPTICAL ZOOM on a 5 mp camera or even the
g600,or htc touch BUT if you get an iphone you are being blinded
by looks without looking at features, also youre a rich snob with
money to waste. and your probbly also a person dat idolises steve

I am an Apple Mac Stalwart. I love their computers and the iPod
is a work of genius. But I am seriously disappointed by the iphone
and I wonder how on earth you arrive at a five star rating? It makes
me wonder about the credibility of reviews on this site. The iphone
is delicious to look at, but if by your own estimation it is 'five
years out of date' in some respects how can it possibly receive
top billing? Poor camera, poor battery, no 3G, O2 only and a price
tag that can only be described as pure greed - it might be the prototype
of something special but it certainly has a long way to go. Yes
it has a built in ipod - but a memory that stores two thousand stores
is by Apple's own standards, pretty lame. They have aimed this at
the US market - but they quickly realised that they would have to
bring down the price or face a humiliating failure. So why do they
think British buyers have money to burn? Even more irritating is
the fact that it is significantly cheaper in France. I have supported
Apple up to now because I believe their computers are well built,
have a superior operating system and are easy to use. Quite simply
once you've used a Mac - you won't go back. But the iphone is undermining
that reputation. Perhaps, in a year or so, when the bugs are ironed
out, the camera has improved, the battery has been given a useful
life and it can genuinely access the internet at 3G speeds anywhere
they will win me back. But how far ahead will the competition be
by then? [Editor's reply: You know what, Tim? You're right. We got
carried away by the iPhone launch and have decided to downgrade
our rating from 5 stars to 4 stars. The truth is we'd been feeling

review was of the second kind when I saw the 5 stars. However, I
must say it's pretty good and balanced. I wouldn't have given it
5 stars, though. It has lots of shortcomings, a serious lack of

I admit that i was foolish enough to be taken in by the hype. So,
what do we have? The first thing that strikes you is the prettiness
of the interface. Unfortunately, the first time i used it that was
all i saw, so that's what i bought it for. Little did i know that
that's where the positive aspects of the iPhone ends. Until now,
I didn't get the chance to use it for everyday practical purposes
such as making calls, sending texts, etc. I envisioned that everything
else would be of similar quality. It has far too many silly restrictions
which can render the phone virtually useless for most people for
everyday use, not to mention the poor quality of the calls, reception,
the build quality, and the camera. I now have 2 options because
of its many shortcomings - use it as a decorative fashion item to
show off to everyone (not my style), or sell it on ebay. Given the
price i paid, it's going on ebay. If some people want to use it
as a fashion accessory, then they have more money than sense. The
iPhone is great as a fashion toy due to the hype making it sound
far better than it is, but after several weeks, the poor quality,
impracticalities, and annoying restrictions will start to grind
on your nerves. DON'T BE MISLED BY THE HYPE. Yours One very annoyed

I've had my iPhone for a few days now so I thought I'd share my
experiences with you. As a phone, it's nothing special - in fact
there's many better phones being given away free on a contract.
My first impressions were very good - it's stunningly beautiful,
yet has a simplistic quality to it. It's weighty in your hand but
feels very well-made and would be able to withstand being knocked
about or dropped. I was glad to see that they've ditched the chrome,
I'll-scratch-if-you-look-at-me back cover in favour of the adonised
aluminium finish the iPod mini and 2nd gen nanos had. When I put
it on I was amazed with the quality of the screen - it has to be
seen to be believed! The phone is very simple to use, the touch
screen is accurate (even for my huge fingers!) and the Mac OS X
software runs incredibly smoothly with no bugs or freezes (unlike
my other Symbian-based smartphones!). It doesn't take hours to power
up or down. The Edge is good with reasonable upload and download
times , but when I moved to an area where Edge wasn't available
(which in the UK at the moment is pretty much everywhere!) then
the GPRS was far too slow to use the iTunes store or use Google
Maps, the stocks, weather or YouTube features. In fact, only about
5% of YouTube videos can actually be viewed on the iPhone and I
frequently was unable to access the service, with no reason given.
The iPhone synced no problem with iTunes, I downloaded my music,
playlists, podcasts, photos and videos as easily as downloading
them onto my iPod. Syncing my contacts from Outlook was a different
story however, as it simply refused to do it. looking at the Apple
website forums, this seems to be a common problem. As a phone, there
were glaring features left out. No MMS (why put the camera on the
phone, that's why cameras were first introduced to mobile phones?!?),
camera is only 2 megapixels with no flash, digital zoom, autofocus,
really is a basic point and shoot in good lighting conditions. No
3G. No ability to forward text messages, although the chat feature
when sending SMSs is rather good. Cannot save contacts to SIM card.
In-built speakers are very quiet and can suffer from distortion
when played at higher volume levels. Battery life is good but not
brilliant and tends to die rather quickly if you use it a lot to
listen to music or view photos or videos. What really sets this
iPhone apart from other phones is the WOW factor it generates when
others see me use it. It has got a certain charisma that other phones
like the N95 just don't get close too. Maybe because it's Apple,
maybe because it's an iPod, I just can't put my finger on it (pardon
the pun!). If style, ease of use and creating a stir is your thing,
then the iPhone is the must-have gadget for you. If you want a more
introverted model that does everything you would want and more,
look at the Nokia N series. I love my iPhone despite the flaws -
it's like falling in love with a catwalk model only to find out
she's not the brainiest - because of the beauty you really don't
care!

and the wi-fi is great. If you love anything Apple, there is absolutely
no reason why you should not have one of these. Overall, you'd be
missing out on a great piece of kit!

well ive owned this phone for about a week becasuse i won a contest
for one and so far it has not fullfilled my needs. 1 you can never
contact apple becuse it is always busy. 2 the touch buttons are
sometimes over sensitive when im calling and it automaticlly hangs
up. a good thing about this phone is the quallity from the music
is excellent. battery life is around about 2 days and the 2 megapixel
camera is average. i dont think this mobile phone will get far due
to lack of specifications. i am probably going to replace it with
a samsung G600 or U600 because theres much more specs and camera

Pros: iconic "apple" branding, nice build quality. Cons: No GPS,
not 3G, heavy phone, very expensive. Summary: Kudos to apple for
creating the "hype". I was very dissapointed with the much anticipated
iPhone. It is essentially a good looking but expensive iPod that
can make phone calls. If you are looking for a smart phone then
look at either the blackberry's (superior emailing system) or Nokia
N95 (more advance functionality).

Was this piece of ridiculously overpriced junk released on April
31st to show how shallow, gullable and stupid 'Apple fanbois' are
the way they think everything Apple makes is divine??? The whole
thing is buggy and crashes every 5 minutes just like the Macs OS.If
you are lucky enough to be able to even see the touchscreen buttons
clearly, you instantly wish you hadn't as they are so irritaing
and time consuming to use.Because the memory is fixed internally
it takes AGES to transfer all your data to and from the PC and as
usual Apple make it difficult for you to avoid not using their money
fleecing, rip off products (eg itunes). Given the pathetic battery
life i WAS shocked to find out the phone doesn't even have 3G. Whats
even worse is Apple are still using their rip off of devoted customers
( who have the delusion Apple are will never do wrong by their customers)
con tatic (like with the ipod) by making the battery fixed and when
it dies (which suspiciouly frequently doesn't take long) having
to pay Apple around £50; send it away to them and let them and only
them change the battery - despite all the money you've alrady payed
them for your phone. This means you can't even double the battery
life of the phone by carrying around a spare battery! D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G
, i don't know how they get away with such blatantly criminal actions!!
I mean its not even beautiful unless find a large fat sardine tin
appealing, is it?!?

I have recently purchased this iphone from the states and i love
it! The mp3 function is fantastic, the way you can flick through
the album covers just by touching the screen is coool, superior
sound, fantastic colours, watching movies on it is the best. I have
the 8 gig model, which i have 4 movies, 20 music vids, 100 short
you tube vids, 400 songs, 150 photos and still room for more. Scrolling
through my pictures is so clever, all you have to do to zoom in
on any photo is pinch the screen. Writing out text messages is easy
with the touch qwerty keyboard, although i cant send any yet or
make any calls as the iphone is locked to AT&T network but.....Just
heard the great news that 2 companies have cracked the locking system
and i will be able to buy the unlock software any day now so i can
use my own uk sim card. Also has a nice 2 mega pixel camera but
no video. There is only one major gripe for me, there is bluetooth
but only to connect mobile devices such as headsets ect.. You cant
send/receive files, pictures or ringtones like with any other bluetooth
mobiles which is a great shame, still it is a brilliant device and
i would recommend it, cant wait to use it as a phone.

Picked up one of these lovely phones for free at coms meeting last
week. Its a very nice piece of kit, looks nice and the interface
is plush. I am perhaps not the best person to comment on a mobile
phone, I am not a phone geek and would rather spend my money on
things that bring more pleasure to life than a simple device like
a mobile phone. If you want a pretty mp3 playing phone and are shallow
enough to fall for the phones design then this is for you. If you
are a business person like me and need something that performs fast
and is very functional choose something else. This phone is way
too hyped, everyone should have a demo of this phone with it actually
connected and make sure it does the things you want it to before
buying the thing. A simple Nokia N series or 6300 and an ipod is
a better option. Not having a spare battery will annoy those on
the road! Thank goodness it was a free trial - the thing is going
back!

My girl waited for one of these. Cute as cute can be for a mobile
device. There are many shortcomings that I can list for would-be
iPhone wannabes. There is no extra battery and you cannot replace
it ($80US & a send to Apple) You cannot transfer contacts from your
old phone even if you have a SIM chip. Took us several hours to
copy by hand all contact data. MP3 ringtones are out. Bluetooth
is useless for both picture sending and stereo headphones. No GPS.
No MicroSD card = no external memory. No video capability on the
camera. Cannot transfer music/video outside of synch with iTunes
= without license you may have to recollect your music .99/song
at a time. No service in Japan. Service provider (ATT) offers no
handset insurance for this expensive smartphone. You drop it, you
buy another! It is very pretty however.

The iPhone is a great piece of technology with one of the easiest
and practical User Interface's I have seen and used, the only other
to be be close is the Mac OS X operating system, with the window
scrolling and touch screen I think the iPhone is even better and
easier to use. I was able to activate the phone and after 5 days
I cancelled my account, now I'm waiting for them to unlock it, which
may never happen. If not I'm still happy with the device as it's
super fast using wi-fi to connect to the net and it serves all my
digital needs, doing email, photos, music and video like a dream.
I'm sure people will like it even more once some new app's start
to appear and they get the hang of using the little hidden features
in the GUI. If your into technology this is one device you'll appreciate
and get a lot of use out of. Well done apple I just wish you had
sold them as an unlocked and open phone usable with an carrier.
I just can't understand why you'd lock yourself into a 5 year deal
with AT&T!!! it's got me when you could be selling them now unlocked
world wide.......
