Apple iPhone 4 Review

Phone rating:

In a nutshell: The iPhone 4 is a flawed beauty. The main improvements are the extra high resolution display, the improved 5 megapixel camera, HD video recording, a second camera for video calls and longer battery life. But there are problems getting a signal and it's phenomenally expensive too. Now available in White.
Best buy: *Free* from Three (8GB Black or White).

Review: June 2010.

Another year, another iPhone. Released on the 24th June 2010 in the UK, the iPhone 4 is in many ways the best iPhone so far. But it's also the most expensive. Whereas the iPhone 3G S was available free on an (already very expensive) £45 per month contract, you'll have to sign up to an eye-watering £60 per month 24-month contract to get the iPhone 4 16GB free, and to get the 32GB version you'll have to shell out an extra £60 on top! On the cheapest tariff available, you'll still end up paying more than £800 over two years. We seriously question just how far Apple can keep pushing their customers, especially in these cash-strapped times.

There's also a problem with the new design. The stainless steel body of the handset acts as an antenna and Apple claim this will help to improve reception of mobile signals. But only if you hold it the right way, because if you place your hand over the bottom left corner of the phone, you'll see your signal drop to zero. Is that a problem? "Just avoid holding it in that way," Steve Jobs remarked. Apple's official statement is more sober, but no less reassuring: "Avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band." Actually that's quite hard to do, especially for a large device like the iPhone. Alternatively, you can buy a case to shield the antenna. You know, if this was any other phone, we'd simply have marked our rating down and advised you not to buy it. But this is the iPhone after all, and you can maybe learn to hold your phone in the way approved by Steve Jobs or buy a case and then the problems will go away. So, we'll drop one star from our rating and carry on with the review.

So, if you can handle the high cost and the signal problem you'll want to know what you get for your money. Well, what you get is a very high quality device that's approximately the same height and width as the previous iPhone, but considerably slimmer, at just 9.3mm thick. It still weighs in at a chunky 137g though. It smells of quality, of course, from the box to the accessories, to the device itself, but apart from the slimness it doesn't look very different to previous generations of iPhones.

The display is the same size as previous iPhones at 3.5 inches, but the new Retina display packs in double the number of pixels in each direction, giving a total of 960 x 640 pixels in total and fantastic image quality as a result. It can't beat the Samsung Galaxy S if you want the best display on the market, but it's probably second best and surely that's good enough.

Apart from the screen, the biggest change comes in the form of upgraded cameras. The still camera has been given a larger sensor so it takes better images at night and in low light, the resolution has been increased to 5 megapixels and an LED flash added. The video camera has been seriously uprated to record videos at HD resolution (720p). That places the iPhone 4 in the top league for video recording with only a handful of other phones able to match - the Samsung Galaxy S, the Samsung Wave and the Sony Ericsson Vivaz among them. But perhaps the biggest change is the addition of a secondary video camera that enables video calling. "People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality," exclaim Apple, ignoring the fact that other manufacturers have been offering this feature since 2003. Note also that you can only make video calls to other iPhone 4 users and only on Wi-Fi. That's rather limiting.

The other main improvement is the battery life of the phone. Although the quoted standby time is the same, Apple say that talktime and web browsing time have been improved by around 40%.

Multi-tasking has also been improved so you can run multiple apps without slowing down the performance of the foreground app or draining the battery unnecessarily.

So, Apple have created one of the very best phones on the market, but potentially a flawed beauty. Does it work as a phone? Not if you have no signal! But there are ways to work around that if you really want to. Apple have certainly gone a long way to plug the gaps in the iPhone's capabilities, but it's phenomenally expensive. Is it worth the money? Is it worth the risk? Only you can decide. Either way, make sure to research the best new iPhone deals using a site like Mobile Phone Genie before making that all important decision. Had plenty of phones over the years. Basic handsets to blackberry to android devices to iPhones to android and now back to iPhone. There is just something about the iPhone 4 that is, to me anyway just perfect. Easy to use. Easy to live with. No problems like I've had with android devices having more settings and options to customise it which sent me mad. I loved my 3gs until it fell to its death. I've never been happy without it. Went to a samsung galaxy mini to see me through the tough times, well hardly a phone to shout about. It did the job until I got the iPhone 4. I paid nothing for the handset and I only pay £18/month for 600 mins anytime any network, unlimited texts and unlimited data (well 500mb) on T-Mobile. Easy when you know how to get what you want when you complain about their customer service department. All in all the best phone. Until battery technology improves to make the 4s last as long as the 4 then the 4 rules.

I've had my iPhone for 14 months now, and I love it.. I've never gotten bored with it, it looks stunning, battery (to me anyway) actually lasts longer than a laptop battery, this is goin by constant use. If the phone is just used for texting and making calls the battery has lasted 2+ days. I've never had a problem with signal, if any other phone can get a signal so can mine. The only time the phone has ever hung up mid call was when I had a flip cover, got rid of the cover and problem solved (all over covers work great :) ) the touch screen is quick and very easy to use (my extremely techtarded 86 yr old Granda could work it! And considering he just about knows what a computer is, that's got to be a plus on user ability front ) the only quibbles I've had are; u have to buy your ringtones (considering I keep mine on vibrate it actually isn't that big of a problem for me) at the start when the clicks went back or forward the alarm went weird for a few days, although with the latest update this is no longer an issue.. Since updating to the iOS 5 it's even better! You no longer need to link it to a computer for anything now, which is great. My phone has also been dropped a number of times, on lots of different surfaces, and even with the most basic of covers, it' still looks new :) absolutely love this phone.. Needs 10 stars!

I always use this website whenever I get a new phone so I thought, even though this phone has been out for quite a while, I'd review it seeing as I've only just jumped on the bandwagon! Waited for the new iPhone to come out so I could pick one of these up cheap on PAYG (got one for £350 brand new from ebay) and then stuck a SIM only contract in and bingo, a fairly affordable way to get an iPhone 4. First I must say, it's an absolute beauty, I could have one just to stare at it all day, and then it doesn't disappoint when using it either! Having come from a BlackBerry Bold, I was apprehensive about the touch screen but my god it's amazing, I've had the phone for 2 days and already I don't miss the physical QWERTY of the Bold. The phone in itself doesn't cease to amaze me, with the fantastic web browsing on Safari and some truly amazing apps that make any dull situation fun! Battery life is a good day (day and a half with light usage) but I won't complain because we all know about the battery life of an iPhone (and besides it doesn't seem to be any worse than my friend's Glaxy S2) In summary, yes there are other phones that are technically better, however the iPhone just does almost everything perfectly. Solid 5 Stars.

Had my iPhone for about a week now and I love it. I had a T Mobile G1 before and it was good, but the look and feel of this is so much better. I had initial concerns about using the touchscreen for typing but I'm honestly impressed with how easy I'm finding it. I'm using my phone to submit this no problem! I had a few problems importing my contacts onto the phone, as they had to come through outlook (not on my previous sim card), but all working now. Not had an issue with the proximity sensor or dropped calls either. I've never submitted a review before but I wanted to, just to show that not everyone is experiencing problems with the phone.

Why are people who obviously haven't got a IPhone4 writing needless negative reviews? I've never seen such jealousy surround a phone before. I've had it since launch and take it from me it is a spectacular phone! All this talk about dropped calls has been taken way out of proportion!! It never drops calls or not for me or anyone else I've met with the Iphone. I'm not going to slate any other phones because its all a matter of personnel choice. If your undecided then try it out first but I don't think many real IPhone 4 users will looking else where for a while!

Writing this from the iPhone 4 - Well I don't appear to have any of the said problems with the proximity sensor, the screen discolouration, yellowish tint to the camera, antenna issues or other reported problems. To be fair, in my house, I get no service most of the time, but that's a problem with o2's coverage where I live; when I'm in an area with high coverage, the iPhone 4 really shines! The call quality is amazing. Even when I have one bar of signal the iPhone hangs on to the call and it is still very clear. I have dropped calls a few times but that's only when I've been in my house which I mentioned, isn't the best area for service. Was stuck between an HTC Desire and iPhone 4 like quite alot of people but seriously, the iPhone is something else! It's just so easy to use and smart and it looks great too. Downsides would be limited Bluetooth. C'mon on Apple! Bluetooth file sharing is one of the features that everybody uses all the time! It's so frustrating when you take a picture on that amazing camera you've given us, but you can't send it to your friend? Same with songs and videos. You've made one of the most enjoyable music players on the Market but you can't share the songs with other people. Other little things that are missing are the likes of setting your own message and ringtones, not the ones pre-installed. It's no big deal, but it makes the phone a little bit more personalised. All in all though, I'm happy with it. All the missing things can be done without. It would be the best phone so far if Apple were consistent with the quality of the phone and it had no problems, but it appears you just had to be lucky. :)

Im also writing this from my iPhone 4. Well im on my second one now as first one had severe proximity sensor issues and every call I made did something dodgy like try make video call, mute it, put on speakerphone or ninety percent of time hang up call, i took advice from apple forums and quite alot of ppl recommended setting new phone up thru iTunes as a new phone and not from backup and also updated software to 4.1 and sensor probs are now in the past, i was still getting quite a few dropped calls so have bought a bumper that makes it look like I have the white iPhone 4 from the back and haven't had one single dropped call, i also have a free bumper coming from apple in few weeks too so now im extremely happy with this beauty, everything for me is perfect and what i want in a phone, I had 3GS before this and always used to say if only it had a flash, better camera and battery then it wud be awesome( even tho my 3GS battery was pretty decent anyway). This phone is awesome now , amazing camera and flash, excellent battery with heavy use, fast Internet, crisp clear screen and a beauty to hold and look at, i love my phone and it's best i Eva had and i have had alot of phones, im more than happy having this as 2 year contract . I have only had the iPhone 4 for 3 days, but I have to say it is by far the best mobile phone I have ever used. My previous phone was an HTC Hero, which was pretty decent, but the speed, functionality, battery life and general 'smoothness' of the iPhone blows it out of the water. I was one of those who was determined not to follow the masses and jump on the Apple bandwagon, but after trying both the iPhone 4 and the HTC Desire in a shop, my mind was made up; Android just can not compete with the sheer class of Apple's technology. I have yet to experience any problems with reception or the proximity sensor, so I just can not fault this product.

Interesting problem with the signal. I tried one in the apple store and holding it wrong did drop the signal. But the same thing happens on my nokia x6 (to a more marked effect), previous sony satio, an lg renoir. It seems many companies place the aerial on the bottom of the phone, hold it too tight and the signal can drop 4 bars! If you were only on 1 before then it'll cut you off. The aerial should surely be on the top of the phone pointing up towards the sky. If I use my nokia x6 in landscape mode for example or hold it upside down the signal strength doubles! Its not just apple who has this problem. The test apple iphone 4 was actually less sensitive to this grip than my current phone and previous 2 ones! Hold it by its edges and its amazing. But far far too expensive. Its not worth £600!!

I'm writing this on my iPhone 4. Yes I queued on the release day in Oxford St. (and felt foolish), but was desperate to get rid of my iPhone 3G. I can easy demonstrate the signal drop issue, but I've yet to experience that stopping me from making a call. And since owning the phone I think I've had two dropped calls, and to be fair that could have been at either end of the call. And I don't work for Apple for the record. So all I've experienced is a beautiful fully working, very fast, super screen iPhone 4. I also know one other owner who I work with that also confirms he has had no problems with his and loves using it. So I posted this to add some balance to these reviews. It may be possible that Apple did drop the ball with the quality control which may account for the mixed experiences, and agree they should have handled the responses better, but I'm not rushing to get a free bumper!

The phone is faulty. Antenna of course is poorly designed and looses reception, but the proximity sensor is also not working as it should. It won't turn of the touch screen when you putting it to you ear, resulting in erratic behavior and crashes. It's unacceptable to have these kinds of faults in a PHONE that is also very expensive. There are better products in the Android line up. Even the upcoming Nokia N8 looks to be a better choice with its unique features and Nokia's reliable antenna technology that they have perfected through the years. A phone should work as a phone by default. It should be primary concern.

Now I have this, plus better resolution photos as well. I have a bumper around the phone and have had no signal problems at all. There are loads of improvements to this phone but one of the best is the increased battery life. After a fairly heavy day usage wise yesterday, it still had 60% battery left at the end, whereas the 3GS would have had very little power left. I love the hi-res display as well. Stunning. The fanboys are already defending the signal flaw by insulting other reviewers here and some commentators are even claiming apple are being picked on! I'd be a mug to ignore the flaws and go ahead with a purchase. I have to wait for iPhone 5. I'm getting fed up with my android phone and android phone manufacturers in general. Some of the reviews on here must have been written by 12 year olds. I received my Iphone 4 on launch day direct from apple sim free. I gave my 3Gs to the other half and she is delighted after years of Nokias and blackberrys. The phone is amazing 1:There isn't a better screen available period...I bought a Desire off ebay to play with during the 30 day return period and ended up selling it back on ebay. It's a good phone but the iphone is miles better 2:I have a blackberry for work but I've set up my iphone to collect my work email as the user interface is so much better. 3:Battery life-I normally run the battery right down and then fully charge it once a month. I tried to run the iphone 4 battery down but it lasted a full 8 1/2hrs of use and 18hr standby and it was still at 7% (running bluetooth for my parrot speaker in the car/3G/wifi on all the time and push email) I gave up as it was 1am in the morning. Excellent battery life. 4:Antenna-Yes there is an area where if you cover the line the signal can drop BUT if you don't do this then the signal is great. My local Tesco store has always been a black spot for coverage (Vodafone) but I get a signal with the iphone 4. 5:Pictures and Videos-Excellent quality 6:Multitasking-Works well no issues Bottom line it's a great phone and I wouldn't swap mine for anything (until the iphone 5 maybe..)

I feel I had to write something on here to stand up and say that I a'm well pleased with my Iphone 4G, and will definitely not be selling it any time soon.. What a piece of over-hyped, overpriced rubbish this is. My iphone arrived this week and is now waiting to be collected by carriers to be returned for refund. I inserted my microsim, connected my phone to itunes and activated it without problem, then the fun began. I tried to make a call but couldn't hear a thing from the internal earpiece, I sent a text asking my wife to ring back, the iphone rang I answered the call and still couldn't hear a thing, the internal earpiece wasn't working. Plug in the supplied earphones or switch the phone to loudspeaker and it was possible to hold a conversation but nothing from the internal earpiece. I also noticed the signal problem, when the iphone was led on its back on the desk it was showing 4 bars on the signal meter, pick it up and this dropped to one and sometimes none, out of 6 attempted calls 2 were dropped. I phone apple care who said it was a software problem which could be cured by connecting to itunes and resetting the phone, needless to say this didn't work. I mentioned the signal problem and told the rep I wasn't bridging the antenna in the bottom left-hand corner, and was holding the phone in the manner suggested by Steve Jobs, I also mentioned the phone was in a case as Apple had hinted this would prevent the signal problem. He told they had now changed this advice and said I should remove the case. He said to tkae the phone to an Apple store where they would exchange it, they wouldn't, the Store said Apple retail shops were completely separate from Apple store online and could not exchange the phone. I then phone Apple care again and arranged to have the phone collected.

After a lot of thinking, I decided to bite the bullet and get my first iPhone... I've spent the last 24 hours having a really good mess about with it and I have to admit to being very impressed with it. Mine's on a 24 month £45 contract so the phone was only £29 - not a massive outlay! Living in Wales means that O2 signal problems are common but I'm finding that the iPhone is holding a signal better than my old Samsung Jet (also an outstanding phone). I've also tried to deliberately kill the signal without a great deal of success. If I'm honest, I think the signal issues have been over-hyped. The only minor annoyances I've found concern the ringtones and message tones... You can't create your own SMS tones and ringtones have to be in the '*.m4r' format. Fortunately, Audiko.net have a converter that's free to use. All in all, I think it's a good choice - especially if you want a smartphone and don't have a great deal of technical know-how. My girlfriend gets her Galaxy S on Thursday so it'll be nice to compare the two side by side.

When I first got the phone, this was a bit concerning, but it hasn't let me down with surfing the net on the 3G network or for making/receiving calls. Apple have tried to move the benchmark still further forward with iPhone 4, however the cummulative effect of a lot of basics they have been missing in their phones, seems to be catching up with them now. When the first iPhone was launched, it was miles ahead of the market and its lack of basic features and quality of many other aspects (eg.call quality) was appalling but went largely unaddressed due to the phenomenal marketing. The market is very different now - iPhone 4's flaws are more in the fore - since the competition is close. The relative comparison of cost of handset versus features and user interface is much easier to compare and the cracks or large gaps (eg. Signal problem) are making the iPhone 4 look amatuer in those aspects. The strengths of the phone-brand image, neat-clean aesthetic etc- are only what is propelling its initial surge of sales but I would be surprised if it manages volumes anywhere near any of its predecessors. For an even more expensive handset, you should not have to put up with problems like battery life, having to hold the phone in a particular manner to be able to stay connected and have to wait for applications to beginning to use the multi-tasking ability and also figure out what to do with the built-in Gyrometer. Apple are brilliant innovators, however for the third iteration in this handset series, they have to come down to earth on their pricing to justify the shortcomings of their latest handset and be fair to their devoted brand-loyalists. Otherwise it would appear they are conning their brand loyalists with this handset in its current condition on launch.

I've had the phone for 3 days now so thought it was worth putting in my two pence now. There has been a lot of talk about signal problems some peaple experience them some do not. So I decided to do my own test and have found the following. If you cover the bottom left hand corner where the metal band is split you will cause signal loss no matter what. If you do this in an area where you have full coverage then its unlikely you will see any drop off this is due to the large bandwith range the fifth bar uses. If you do this with four bars or less you will lose most of all of your signal. If you dont cover the bottom left hand corner you see very little signal loss at all. If you use a bumper or case you see no signal loss, in fact the iPhone 4 actually holds signal a lot better than the 3GS, in low signal areas I am now seeing 1 bar on the 4 that the 3GS used to say No Service. So basically you need to not hold the bottom left corner or get a case. A lot of people quite rightly so say that this is simply not good enough but thats fine just dont get the phone, in fact if you read other internet readings about signal loss you will find a lot of the modern smartphones have the same problem as the iPhone 4 (Nexus One for example). Signal problems aside the phone is phenomenal, the screen, the HD Video, OS 4, the speed of it all. I couldnt put my finger on why the iPhone was so popular until I got my 3GS. Then you realise how much of your life you spend using it and how absorbed you get by it. Then when the new one comes out you really badly want it! So thats why this phone will be the best phone ever and thats despite the signal problems.

I think on balance this is a five star phone. For me the reception issues aren't a problem as I will always have it in a case given that if I drop it once it could break. So putting that aside the positives outweigh the negatives in my view.... These are the thinness of the phone which makes a case on it not too keep on the outside of it, the support from people in the Apple store which is free you just go and ask people there something, the great screen, quality engineering and ease of use........ There are some negatives with the reception issues probably being key... for those with a 3GS it might be worth waiting until next year... also I would of liked for a lower weight and I think using glass and Stainless Steel for the back and the sides makes the weight high despite the thinness... but as I said before there are lots of unobtrusive cases which cure any reception issues and as the phone is £500 it is a good idea to have these on all the time anyway.... the quality of the build and the software means it is a phone I can trust...

Reception problems will be fixed in the newest update: Reception issues observed by new iPhone 4 owners, derided as the "Death Grip" by bloggers, appears to actually be a software issue that an iOS update is expected to resolve early next week. Clear observations of mobile signal strength and how they are affected by the placement of users' hands are difficult to perform in part because there are multiple factors involved in receiving a mobile radio link, including outside interference and the conductivity or mass of different people's hands. Additionally, cellphones in general (and in particular the iPhone) have always only presented a very rough approximation of signal strength in the signal bar display, averaged over time. It appears that iOS 4, more so than previous iPhone software, presents a less accurate signal meter, showing less signal at times than an iPhone 3GS while still being able to achieve the same or better call quality. This has led some to jump to the conclusion that the reception problems noted by some iPhone 4 users are the sign of a hardware design flaw related to its stainless steel band antenna design. Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs stoked a whiplash of blogger frenzy when he reportedly responded that users "were holding it the wrong way," blocking the signal with their hands. A variety of people have demonstrated identical problems with other phones, from the Android based Nexus One to the iPhone 3GS. Yesterday, my wry tweet, "Blocking iPhone 4 antenna kills reception. Blocking mic kills audio, and covering the screen makes it impossible to see Retina Display" made it to the front page of Twitter and was retweeted more than a hundred times by people following the hullabaloo. However, the fact that problems observed in the iPhone 3GS are much more pronounced when the device is upgraded to iOS 4 indicate that there is also a software issue involved in the matter. iPhone 4 users can't downgrade to earlier versions of the core software, making it impossible to compare its relative performance. Readers report that Apple's tech support forums originally confirmed that a iOS 4.0.1 software fix addressing the issue would ship early next week (as early as Monday), before the comments were subsequently taken down along with all the other related discussion about the matter. The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting "no service" rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio. iOS 4 introduced some enhancements to how the baseband selects which frequencies to use, so it makes sense that the error may have crept into those changes. Additionally, this explains why iOS 4 has also caused similar problems for iPhone 3GS users. Additional readers have shared other related experiences that also corroborate the idea that the issue is related to iOS 4's software control of the baseband, including the fact that the issue seems easily reproducible when connecting to a WWAN 3G network but does not appear when connecting to a Microcell 3G. If the problem were simply hardware related issues of the antenna design, it should only affect iPhone 4 units with that new design and should occur at all times, regardless of the tower type. That is not being observed.

They must be about one of the only companies to treat their customers this way, rip you off for a faulty product then charge you again for a fix ie (case or Bumper). get the htc desire instead much better phone all round & hd video is possible with an unofficial update at the present.

Great looking phone, have the same issues with poor signal along with limited wireless connection. If you do not need to make calls get an iphone 4

Hard to say if any of these reviews (including mine) are worth reading given that no one has had of these things for more than 36 hours and you probably need a little more time to objectively assess a phone...certainly to give it 1 star !. I've upgraded from a Nokia 5800xm and I really like the design and shape of the device. A little bigger than the Nokia but half the thickness which makes a huge positive difference. Being my first capacitive touchscreen I am blown away by how much easier it is to navigate menus and type and the hype about the clarity and definition of the display is all true, videos look superb. Its also a joy to ditch the Ovi store and use a well designed and properly filled app store and I cant stop finding things i want to download. I am enjoying the smooth speedy iOS4 experience which appears to be so much better on this new handset than for those updating an old 3G/S device and is a huge leap forward compared to the symbian S60 devices that I have been using for the past few years. I cant see the battery life being a problem either. I fully charged the device when I bought it then spent an evening exploring, setting it up and downloading loads of apps over wi-fi, then went to bed leaving the wi-fi on by mistake and when I woke up the battery was still showing 87% after all that. Setting up my assorted email accounts was a breeze, likewise facebook, ebay etc. In summary £200 is a lot to pay up front but I can see this phone keeping me more than satisfied for the next 18 months whereas my 5800 always left me wishing i hadn't been so tight and bought a 3Gs at the time.

When Apple sent out the iphone4 to be tested before it reached the customer they did so in a protective case so when held via the case the signal strength was strong. Apple have informed the customers that they can buy a 'buffer bar' at a cost of £25 or have advised not to hold the phone at the bottom left-hand side. D'oh, don't we all hold the phone that way. Oh, they also said the signal strength problem happens to most phones on the market today. It might be a great phone....but you can't phone people with it!!!!

yes, its a thing of beauty to hold and look at. Great screen and OS, camera is fantastic considering its "only" 5 mp... BUT as with everyone the loss of signal is very apparent. There's absolutely noway im paying such an exorbitant fee for a PHONE that cannot be used to make calls!! Apple are greedy to charge their loyal customers so much for something that doesn't work. I'll be hastily returning mines for a full refund.

i have a 3gs and the new iphone 4...mmmmm dont waste your money, just wait for the new software update for the 3gs...which is used in the ipad and the new iphone 4...for the gains it is not worth the money...i think the rectangle shape is not as nice as the previous...looks a bit sony/nokia style...im taking mine back, getting a refund, keeping the proven 3gs, and spending my hard earned cash on something else lol

Gorgeous phone, very sleek. However, with the problems about the iPhone signal strength, all Steve Jobs could advise was "Just avoid holding it in that way.".. as apparently the antenna runs across the bottom left of the phone. Well I'm sorry but that is where I would normally hold a phone.. I hold it in my hand grasping the sides of it, no idea why they would have though people would hold it differently.. Ignoring standard conventions did not work out for apple this time.
